Lavender Town Pokémon Center.

Raina leaned against the front counter, her face still pale from her frantic sprint through town.

Nurse Joy wore her usual professional smile.

”Trainer, you don’t look very well. Would you like to rest for a while?”

”No, no, I’m fine! I’m perfectly fine!”

Raina forced a smile, only for her shoulders to jerk when the automatic doors opened behind her.

Eevee lay atop her head, its tail still completely puffed up.

Nurse Joy covered her smile and took a small packet from beneath the counter.

”This is a special calming tea made in Lavender Town. You can have it. Many Trainers visiting Lavender Town for the first time find it helpful.”

Raina’s eyes immediately lit up.

”Thank you, Nurse Joy!”

Just then, Chansey passed by while pushing a small cart loaded with freshly washed bedsheets.

Upon seeing Raina, Chansey stopped, rummaged beneath the cart, and held something out to her.

Raina looked carefully.

It was a piece of Berry candy wrapped in crumpled paper.

”Chansey, Chansey!”

Nurse Joy smiled.

”Gengar asked Chansey to give this to you. It wanted to apologize for frightening you earlier.”

The tips of Raina’s ears turned visibly red.

[Regular-Seat Chat Group]

”Hahahahaha! Gengar specifically asked Chansey to deliver candy as an apology!”

”That Gengar is far too polite! It only wanted to greet her, Raina ran away, yet Gengar was still the one who apologized!”

”Gengar: I don’t know what I did wrong, but apologizing first is probably safest.”

”Raina’s red ears are adorable! She has probably never felt this embarrassed in her entire life.”

”So is Raina going to find Gengar and thank it in person?”

”Person above, you just want to watch her get frightened again.”

”You saw through me, but there was no need to say it.”

[VIP Chat Group]

[Acerola]: Aaaaaah! Gengar is so adorable! It even asked Chansey to deliver candy and apologize! ( ´▽` )

[Agatha]: Hehehe. That is simply how Gengar are. They may be genuinely frightening, but they are also genuinely kind to those they like.

[Fantina]: That is the romance of Ghost types~ They may appear frightening on the outside, but they can be gentler than anyone else~

The video continued.

Raina stared at the candy for a long time before taking a deep breath.

”Eevee, we’re going to find that Gengar.”

Eevee frantically slapped her forehead with one paw.

”Eevee, Eevee, Eevee?!”

Have you lost your mind?! Who was it that just ran for two entire blocks?!

”That was different!”

Raina clenched her fist.

”It gave me candy and even apologized. I can’t simply leave without doing anything. Besides...”

She lowered her gaze toward the candy in her hand.

”I want to thank it.”

”Eevee.”

Fine. When you run away this time, I’ll be responsible for giving directions.

Raina stared at it.

”...I’m not going to run away again!”

[Regular-Seat Chat Group]

”Eevee: History has a remarkable tendency to repeat itself.”

”Eevee has already predicted that Raina will run again.”

”But it’s still willing to accompany her! Aaaaaah! This is what a true bond looks like!”

”Conclusion: No one understands Raina better than Eevee.”

[VIP Chat Group]

[Mallow]: Raina really is kind... Even though she’s so frightened, she still wants to thank Gengar.

[Lana]: Mm-hmm. You can truly feel how sincerely she cares about Pokémon. I think I would probably do the same.

[Ash]: Well done, Raina! That’s exactly what you should do! You have to properly respond to a Pokémon’s feelings!

[Pikachu]: Pika, pika!

[Gary]: Ash, could you stop shouting over every little thing?

[Ash]: I’m excited! Is that not allowed?!

[Paul]: ...Pointless. Going out of her way to find some unknown wild Pokémon over something so trivial is merely a waste of time.

[Ash]: What did you say, Paul?!

[Paul]: I said that instead of wasting time forming attachments with wild Pokémon, she would be better off training and improving her strength.

[Ash]: How can you still think that way?! Pokémon aren’t tools! They’re our partners!

[Paul]: I never said they were tools. I simply don’t see any practical value in this unnecessary act of ”gratitude.”

[Brock]: Paul, sometimes a Pokémon’s friendship can be more meaningful than training.

[Paul]: ...I disagree. But I suppose all you Kanto Trainers think alike.

[Gary]: Hey! What do you mean by ”all you Kanto Trainers”?

[Paul]: Exactly what I said.

[Gary]: Interesting. You dare speak to me like that? How about saying it to my face?

[Ash]: Uh... Gary, forget it. Paul, you should stop too.

[Gary]: Hmph.

[Paul]: ...

The video continued.

Raina followed the directions Chansey had given her through the streets of Lavender Town.

In the distance, the Gengar from earlier sat cross-legged on the ground. Two Gastly and one Haunter sat opposite it.

The four Ghost Pokémon formed a circle around a pile of Berries.

Haunter was patting Gengar on the back with one claw, its movements giving the distinct impression of someone saying, Cheer up, buddy.

Gengar hung its head, still clutching the bag of Berries it had failed to give away. Its expression was as wounded as that of a heartbroken child.

”Gengar, Gengar...”

I only wanted to give her a local souvenir...

Haunter patted its back.

”Haunter, Haunter.”

It wasn’t your fault. Humans simply don’t understand how we express ourselves.

Gastly A floated in front of Gengar and pulled a frightening face.

”Gastly, Gastly!”

Try smiling for her again!

Gengar stretched its mouth into a smile that looked even more miserable than crying.

Gastly A silently floated backward.

”Gastly...”

...Perhaps you shouldn’t smile after all.

[Regular-Seat Chat Group]

”Damn! Gengar is far too pitiful! Hahahahaha!”

”Gastly: Never mind. Your smile is even more frightening.”

”Even its own kind thinks its smile is terrifying! That poor Gengar!”

”Being rejected by a human was bad enough, but now its friends are insulting it too! Hahahaha!”

”Haunter patting its back looked so human! Are the Ghost types holding a support meeting?”

”Hahahahaha!”

”I’m genuinely starting to feel sorry for Gengar! It only wanted to give someone a souvenir!”

[VIP Chat Group]

[Gardenia]: Waaaah! Gengar is so pitiful! Its wounded heart needs comforting!

[Dawn]: Gardenia is already crying on Gengar’s behalf...

[Piplup]: Piplup, Piplup! Offers a tissue.

[Phoebe]: Gengar really is hurt. Ghost-type Pokémon possess very delicate emotions, and they may remember being rejected for a long time.

[Agatha]: Hmph. That is why you should never judge a person by their appearance—or a ghost, for that matter.

[Acerola]: Everyone, look! Raina is about to say something!

The video continued.

At that moment, Gengar also noticed Raina standing nearby.

Raina took a deep breath and strode toward it.

She stopped in front of Gengar, crouched down, and held up the candy.

”Thank you for the candy! It was delicious!”

Gengar froze.

Then it broke into a broad smile.

It shoved the bag of Berries into Raina’s arms before pushing every Berry from the center of the circle toward her as well.

Haunter covered its face behind them.

Gastly A and Gastly B silently floated away.

Raina looked at the mountain of local specialties piled before her and couldn’t help laughing.

”This is far too much! I can’t eat all of this!”

Gengar scratched its head before reaching behind itself and producing another object.

It was a model Poké Ball carved from stone and messily covered in purple paint. The craftsmanship was rather poor, but its shape was still recognizable.

Gengar placed the stone Poké Ball in Raina’s palm and closed her fingers around it with its chubby claws.

”Gengar~”

Raina lowered her head and stared at the crooked stone Poké Ball in her hand.

She remained silent for a moment before looking up, her eyes curving into crescents.

”...Mm-hmm! Thank you for the present!”

[VIP Chat Group]

[May]: Waaaah, Gengar is so sweet... That stone Poké Ball looks like a keepsake it made by itself...

[Ash]: Look, Paul! Whether they come from humans or Pokémon, sincere feelings can always reach someone!

[Paul]: ...Hmph. Pointless.

[Gary]: Ash, why are you bothering with him? Are the two of you close?

[Ash]: Um... I suppose we’re friends.

[Gary]: What?! You consider someone like this a friend?

[Ash]: Gary, Paul is actually—

[Paul]: Hmph. So there are people in Kanto who don’t know how to speak properly either.

[Gary]: Heh. I’ve never known how to speak politely since the day I was born. Do you have a problem with that?

[Ash]: Um, Gary...

[Gary]: Quiet, Ash! You have terrible judgment when choosing friends. I’m helping you.

[Paul]: ...Hmph. Pointless.
