Primordial Heir: Nine Stars

After finishing their sandwiches, the two—now fully recovered—launched into the sky. Shimmering crystal wings unfurled from Khione’s back, while blazing flame wings erupted from Nero’s.

Flap! Flap!

With just two powerful beats, they soared above the towering treetops, racing forward as if the sky itself had issued a challenge. The Ice Queen, her face calm and unreadable, glided with elegant precision, her wings slicing through the air in smooth, calculated arcs. Nero, laughing under his breath, followed close behind, his fiery wings leaving trails of heat in his wake.

For ten minutes, they weaved and darted through the sky, twisting between clouds and branches, diving low and spiraling high—neither one yielding, neither one speaking. It wasn’t a contest declared, but a silent rivalry, fierce and unspoken. In the end, no victor emerged—only two figures vanishing deeper into the heart of the forest, their unrelenting pace saying all that needed to be said.

Though the aerial race had brought them a burst of excitement, neither lost sight of the real mission. The hunt—and the true competition—was far from over. Khione was two kills behind and needed to catch up quickly. Their team still held first place with 291 points, but the other teams were closing in fast.

To maximize their coverage, they spread their senses in opposite directions, scanning the terrain below. Within moments, two distinct presences entered their range—large, sluggish, and brimming with aggression. Given the area, it wasn’t hard to identify them: orcs.

The moment Nero locked onto the targets, he dived without hesitation, aiming to claim the kills before Khione could act. But she wasn’t about to fall for the same tactic twice.

A knowing smirk tugged at her lips. With a graceful sweep of her wand, she invoked a spell:

”Ice Shield!”

Two translucent shields of ice materialized mid-air before Nero, stacked and slightly angled. They shimmered like frozen glass, each radiating a bone-deep chill that caused the air around them to frost over. Jagged veins of magic pulsed through the shields like frozen lightning—beautiful, but unyielding. They weren’t just barriers; they were meant to halt momentum.

But Nero had expected this.

Rather than scowling or panicking, his face lit up with a familiar, confident grin—as if to say, I knew you’d try that.

With a powerful flap, he drew his flame wings together in front of him, condensing their heat into a single blazing point. Flames crackled, coiled, and roared to life, encasing him in a cloak of fire. The temperature spiked instantly, searing the sky around him. Then, like a meteor, he pierced through the shields, vapor trailing behind him.

The ice hissed and cracked violently as he shot through it, molten droplets forming before being snuffed out in his slipstream. He looked like a comet hurtling downward, unstoppable.

Yet Khione had anticipated this as well.

She hadn’t cast the shield to stop him completely—just to slow him down for a fraction of a second. And in that instant, she made her move.

With a twist of her body and a whispered command, she activated a high-level movement spell she had engineered herself: Phase Glide. This spell allowed her to momentarily merge with pockets of cold air, letting her body slip through space along streams of chilled energy.

The earlier Ice Shield had served another purpose beyond defense—it had saturated the air ahead with concentrated frost. That frost, now diffused in the atmosphere, acted as a network of frozen threads that she could glide along. As she invoked the spell, her form shimmered, then vanished in a burst of glimmering mist.

Almost like teleportation—but not quite.

She reappeared ahead, just above the two unsuspecting orcs. Her eyes locked onto them, her wand already drawn back for the next strike.

She had outmaneuvered Nero by a heartbeat.

But sometimes, a heartbeat was all that mattered.

”Hehehe! You’ve got me there—but don’t celebrate just yet!” Nero called out with a grin, acknowledging her victory in that brief moment, but far from conceding the war.

Khione, now phased to the other side of the clearing, knew exactly how little time she had. There would be no second chance. Ideally, she would’ve transformed her wand into her usual weapon—an elegant ice bow firing high-speed arrows of frost. But that took precious seconds she didn’t have.

So she adapted.

Her fingers tightened around the wand as she recalled a distant memory—elementary school, throwing a javelin during gym class. She wasn’t a knight like Nero, but she didn’t need to be. With a focused breath, she raised her wand above her head. Ice surged around it, spiraling upward in jagged lines before condensing into a gleaming ice spear, sharp as obsidian and radiating biting cold.

Below, Nero burst through the last fragments of her Ice Shields. As the shards scattered like glittering snow, he spotted her mid-air, arm cocked back with the spear in hand.

His eyes widened.

”You’re seriously something, Khione,” he muttered, half in admiration, half in challenge.

Never one to be outdone, he instantly mimicked her move. With a flick of his hand, his flaming sword transformed—molten heat wrapped around it, reshaping it into a blazing spear that pulsed like a miniature sun. Without hesitation, he hurled it downward just as Khione launched hers.

Swoosh!

Swoosh!

The two spears sliced through the air, racing toward their targets. Though Nero had been a split-second behind, his spear gained speed rapidly, fueled by sheer will—and perhaps a bit of pride. Both weapons streaked through the sky like divine projectiles, one trailing shimmering frost, the other blazing fire.

Below, the two orcs who had tried to flee froze in place—not from fear alone, but from the crushing pressure of the laws approaching them. Their limbs locked, their bodies paralyzed as if the very world refused to let them escape.

The sky above rippled.

Where the two spears crossed paths, a distortion spread—like a crack in reality. Ice and flame collided mid-air, not physically, but spiritually. Khione’s domain of frost and Nero’s domain of fire clashed, twisting space into shimmering layers of heat haze and falling snow. Invisible forces fought for dominance: blistering heat met glacial cold, every particle of flame screaming against the silence of absolute zero.

Neither law won. Neither law lost. Instead, they intertwined—chaotic yet balanced, repelling and attracting at once. It was the kind of harmony born only from complete opposition.

Then—impact.

The spears struck.

Each found its mark, piercing the orcs’ bodies with unrelenting force.

BOOM!!!

The forest exploded.

A massive shockwave expanded outward, flattening trees in a wide radius. The ground shattered as frost raced along the soil, freezing roots and grass in its wake—only to be instantly consumed by spiraling infernos that followed a heartbeat later. A cyclone of elemental chaos erupted into the sky—ice shards and fire embers swirling in a violent dance.

At the center, a burst of white light engulfed everything, the combined laws creating a brief moment of pure annihilation. Where the orcs once stood, there was nothing left—no bodies, no weapons, not even ash.

When the light finally faded, a crater smoked in the earth. One half was blackened and scorched, flames still licking the broken soil. The other half glistened with crystal frost, delicate snowflakes slowly falling from above.

Floating above the devastation, Khione and Nero hovered silently, their wings beating in sync. Neither spoke. But the smirks tugging at their lips said enough.

This round?

A perfect tie.

With the latest kills, their score finally broke past the 300-point mark. 301 points. Still at the top of the leaderboard, their team maintained first place—but only barely. And despite the tie, Khione still trailed Nero by two kills.

As the smoke and shimmering frost settled, both descended into the ruined clearing to retrieve their weapons.

Nero landed beside the charred edge of the crater, reaching down to grasp his sword. The blade, though still intact, bore deep cracks and scorch marks from its transformation into a flame spear. He frowned, running a thumb along the damaged edge.

Khione, on the opposite side of the battlefield, retrieved her wand with practiced grace. Her expression remained unreadable—but behind those calm eyes, mischief brewed.

While Nero was distracted inspecting his sword, she moved quietly, stepping close enough to cast a quick spell beneath him. A faint shimmer rippled across the ground, subtle as a whisper. Then—

Crack!

Ice burst forth from the earth, climbing up around Nero’s boots in jagged spirals, locking his feet in place. By the time he looked up, startled by the sudden chill, he caught only a flash of pale blue and silver disappearing into the sky.

Khione had already taken off—her crystal wings glinting in the sunlight as she vanished among the clouds.

”Wow! That is dirty!” Nero barked a laugh, equal parts surprised and impressed. Of all the tricks she could’ve pulled, he hadn’t expected this one.

Flames erupted around his legs in response, heat swirling as fire devoured the ice, freeing him with a hiss of steam.

”Alright, Ice Queen—no more mercy!” he shouted after her, wings flaring wide as he launched into the sky, fire trailing behind him like a comet.

The chase had begun again.
