Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

The first street gave way less than five minutes after something passed beneath them.

Raven was still standing on the stone platform beside the cistern when the bells in the northern district changed pattern. Until then, they had been ringing irregularly, following individual movements beneath the streets. Now three bells answered almost simultaneously.

CLANG.

CLANG.

CLANG.

Maelor snapped his head up.

”That isn’t one moving.”

Raven looked at the cistern. The ripples were no longer spreading from a single edge. The entire surface was trembling.

”Then what is it?”

”Several chambers venting pressure.”

He didn’t get to explain further.

The air came first.

A hot gust burst through the gaps between the paving stones, carrying dust and the mineral smell of underground rock. Then came a deep cracking sound, not from a building or a wall, but from beneath the entire street.

Raven stepped down from the platform.

”Move.”

Maelor didn’t need to hear it twice. Valeria dropped from the terrace, and Roland abandoned the cart just before the wood began vibrating beneath his boots.

A line of cracks appeared at the northern end of the intersection.

It moved directly toward them.

Not quickly.

Worse.

Slowly enough that they could watch it grow.

Raven tracked the fracture as it crossed one corner, passed beneath a small shop, and reached the foundation of a two-story building.

The wall tilted.

Only a few centimeters.

That was enough.

”Roland.”

The archer was already looking at the same building.

”I see it.”

”Get everyone off that street.”

A man helping secure a door turned toward them.

”Why?”

Raven pointed at the building.

”Because it’s going to collapse.”

”How do you know?”

”The wall is already leaning.”

The man looked.

He didn’t see it.

Raven did.

The foundation had lost support, and one of the second-floor windows was no longer sitting square inside its frame.

”Everyone out!” Roland shouted, considerably less interested in convincing them. ”Across the square! Now!”

The people of Kharad were used to obeying certain commands when the bells rang.

That saved time.

Valeria moved into the center of the intersection.

”What do you need?”

Raven answered without looking away from the buildings.

”Keep the side streets clear. If a wall falls across an exit, move it enough for people to pass. Don’t try to hold an entire building.”

”I know how much I can lift.”

”After Dunvar, I prefer saying it.”

She looked at him for a moment.

”That almost sounded like concern.”

”Not now.”

”I’ll try again later.”

Raven was already moving away.

Another pressure discharge traveled through the underground network.

This time it wasn’t a vibration.

It was an impact.

BOOM.

A section of the street jumped several centimeters. The stones slammed back down, and dust rolled across the intersection.

A horse tied outside a shop reared, tore part of the railing loose, and nearly dragged a man off his feet.

Raven reached them first.

He grabbed the reins, let the animal pull once, and activated Stonehide across his forearm when the rope snapped taut against him.

”Cut it!”

The owner hesitated.

”The horse—”

”You prefer a loose horse to a dead one on top of you.”

The man cut the rope.

The animal bolted down the street.

Another vibration.

Raven turned.

”Roland! That corner!”

The archer was already shoving two people toward a side street.

”I’m a little busy!”

”Be busy faster.”

”Thank you for the inspiration.”

The leaning building gave a long groan as wood, stone, and mortar began failing together.

Valeria raised both hands.

Blood flowed from two small cuts along her fingers and formed thick crimson lines that anchored themselves to the wall like cables.

She didn’t try to stop the collapse.

Only redirect it.

”Raven!”

”Toward the empty street.”

”That is what I’m trying to do.”

The wall gave way.

Valeria pulled.

The building shifted nearly half a meter from its natural path and crashed into the section Roland had just cleared.

Dust turned midday gray.

Raven covered his mouth.

”Good.”

Valeria emerged through the dust.

”That’s all the thanks I get?”

”You saved approximately nine people.”

”Better.”

”I wasn’t finished.”

”Don’t ruin the progress.”

A scream cut through the conversation.

Not human.

High-pitched.

Underground.

Maelor froze.

”Juvenile.”

The street exploded.

The creature burst through the surface beside the remains of a fountain.

Stone, dirt, and fragments of broken piping shot in every direction. Raven managed to spread Stonehide over the left side of his face before a piece of rock struck him.

The Burrower emerged behind it.

It wasn’t enormous.

That was the worrying part.

The creature was perhaps a meter and a half long, with a low, broad body protected by dark brown plates. Its forelimbs were disproportionately large, ending in flat claws built to move earth rather than cut flesh. Its head had almost no visible neck, and two small black eyes sat behind layers of protective bone.

Ads by PubFuture Beneath its chest, something expanded.

A muscular sac.

No.

A chamber.

Predation reacted.

[Blastback Burrower — Level 8 — COMMON.]

[Juvenile.]

[Pressure Chamber Detected.]

[Development: INSUFFICIENT for Prototype Rifle.]

Raven barely needed the final line.

Small valves opened along the creature’s torso.

Maelor shouted.

”Down!”

Raven didn’t obey.

He watched the alignment of the torso, the legs, and the openings.

The Stormhorn had taught him something useful.

Direction mattered.

Pressure needed somewhere to go.

The Burrower compressed its body.

Raven activated Burst Step.

He appeared beside the creature just as it released.

WHUMP.

There was no flame.

No light.

The air simply became a wall.

The blast tore down the street and ripped an entire door from its hinges. Two market stalls overturned. A man who hadn’t crouched in time was thrown several meters and rolled across the stones.

Raven was already beside the Burrower.

Kinetic Acceleration.

His knife entered behind the lateral plate of its skull.

The creature shrieked and twisted with surprising force.

Raven released before one of its claws could reach his knee.

The juvenile backed away.

Its chest began expanding again.

Too quickly.

”Valeria.”

She saw the chamber.

”How much do you need to preserve?”

”Nothing. It’s too small.”

That simplified things.

A blood lance pierced one of its forelimb joints.

The Burrower fell sideways.

Raven entered through the blind angle, planted one boot against the cervical plate, and drove the knife in twice more where Predation marked vulnerable tissue.

The creature stopped moving.

No DEVOUR.

There was nothing Raven needed.

He pulled the knife free.

Maelor approached while staring at the hole the creature had emerged from.

”That shouldn’t be here.”

”You’ve been telling me that a lot since we arrived.”

”A juvenile can approach the edge of a colony. It doesn’t cross a street full of human vibrations if it has better routes.”

Raven looked into the tunnel.

”Unless something behind it is worse.”

Maelor didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Another bell rang three streets away.

Then another.

The colony wasn’t fleeing Kharad.

It was being pushed into it.

For the next twenty minutes, Raven stopped thinking about the Pressure Chamber.

Not because it had stopped mattering.

Because Kharad still needed to exist when the time came to extract it.

The underground discharges began causing cascading failures. Not all of them were Burrower attacks. Some abandoned chambers simply couldn’t tolerate the sudden pressure changes.

A cistern ruptured.

A storage tunnel collapsed.

The ground sank beneath a stable.

The bells gave warning for some movements, but not all of them.

Raven stopped trying to do everything himself.

That would have been stupid.

Black Hound had operated inside bombed buildings, partially collapsed compounds, and extraction zones where recovering survivors could turn into recovering bodies if no one organized the movement.

The first rule had always been simple.

You didn’t need everyone doing everything.

You needed each person doing one useful thing.

Raven found the yellow-coated man who had coordinated the inspections during the night.

”Who controls the municipal teams?”

”I do.”

”Name.”

”Joren Vask.”

”Good. Joren, close every street above old galleries and don’t send anyone into damaged buildings until someone checks the foundations.”

The man stared at him.

”And who are you to—”

A discharge rolled beneath them.

Raven pointed toward a house on the right.

”That one has less than five minutes before it loses the northern corner.”

Joren looked.

This time he knew what to search for.

He saw the tilt.

”How...?”

”Explosions. Training. Doesn’t matter. Do you have engineers?”

”Four.”

”Put one with every team. The larger bells read deeper movement better than the small ones, correct?”

”Yes.”

”Then stop treating every alarm the same. Deep pattern, evacuate a wider area. Shallow pattern, identify the likely exit point. If two patterns overlap, nobody goes in until you know which one is above the other.”

Joren needed only a second.

Then he nodded.

”I can do that.”

”Do it.”

Raven turned.

Roland was helping organize groups of residents.

”You.”

”I have a name.”

”Use it while you organize people capable of carrying the injured.”

Roland stared at him.

”Sometimes I remember why you were probably unbearable in your old job.”

”It worked.”

”That’s the problem.”

Valeria appeared with dried blood across one cheek that wasn’t hers.

”The western sector is clear. Two serious injuries.”

”Can you stabilize them?”

”I can stop bleeding. I can’t rebuild organs.”

”Do that. Let the healer decide the rest.”

Valeria didn’t argue.

That caught Joren’s attention.

Raven noticed.

”What?”

”Lady von Nacht takes orders from you.”

Valeria answered before he could.

”Only when they’re good.”

Raven looked at her.

”That could have been more reassuring.”

”It wasn’t meant for you.”

Joren decided he had other things to do.

A good decision.
