Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

Raven didn’t try to kill the Stormhorn Courser the next day.

That seemed to surprise Roland.

”I thought after yesterday you’d wake up determined to prove you could catch it.”

Raven remained crouched on a grassy rise, watching the herd through a small crystal scope they had bought in Dunvar. It wasn’t powerful enough to count individual hairs, but it could clearly show leg movement, posture, and changes in mana from several hundred meters away.

”Doing the same thing while expecting a different result would be an expensive way to learn.”

Roland settled beside a rock.

”So today we just watch.”

”Today we learn what it does before we move.”

Valeria sat several yards away with one leg stretched out. She had brought a book with her that morning.

She hadn’t opened it in almost an hour.

”It’s reassuring to know your definition of hunting occasionally includes not running directly at an Elite creature.”

Raven lowered the scope.

”I wasn’t hunting it yesterday.”

”You provoked it until it charged you.”

”I was measuring its response.”

”Using your body as the measuring instrument.”

”The instrument survived.”

Valeria shook her head.

”Every day I understand a little better why you need Regeneration.”

Raven returned to the scope.

The herd had spent the night near a depression where water remained from the last rainfall. Now the animals were slowly spreading across the plain.

Thirty-one individuals.

Raven had counted the same thirty-one three times.

That meant none had separated during the night.

More importantly, they weren’t moving randomly.

The Level Twenty-Seven Courser remained near the outer edge of the herd. It didn’t graze beside the foals for long and never lay down while several other adults were resting.

It patrolled.

Every few minutes, it walked fifty or sixty meters along the perimeter, stopped, raised its head, and tested the wind before choosing its next position.

Raven mentally marked each stop.

Always upwind of the nearest vulnerable section of the herd.

”It’s a sentry.”

Valeria looked toward him.

”I thought you said they didn’t have a leader.”

”They don’t. That isn’t leadership.”

Raven adjusted the scope.

”It’s threat management.”

Roland looked across the valley.

”What’s the difference?”

”The herd doesn’t wait for it to decide where they go. But it takes the exposed position, checks approaches, and reacts first when something enters its detection range.”

Valeria glanced toward the Elite.

”So it protects them voluntarily.”

”Or instinctively. Doesn’t matter.”

Raven watched the Courser reposition again as the wind shifted.

”It relies heavily on scent. Every time the wind changes, it moves until the air from the most exposed approach reaches it first.”

Roland frowned.

”So approaching from downwind is bad.”

”Approaching from downwind means it smells us before most of the herd does.”

”That sounds bad.”

”It’s useful.”

Valeria gave him a look.

”Of course it is.”

”If it detects a threat before the others, it may investigate before triggering the entire herd.”

Roland slowly understood.

”You want it to notice us.”

”Eventually.”

”But not the rest.”

”Exactly.”

A juvenile wandered too far from the center of the group.

The response came immediately.

An adult female lifted her head while another Courser moved in from the opposite flank. Neither charged toward the juvenile.

Instead, they repositioned until they stood between it and the surrounding hills.

The juvenile continued grazing, apparently unaware anything had changed.

Raven watched carefully.

”They protect by positioning first.”

Valeria followed the movement.

”They don’t immediately attack.”

”No.”

”Or run.”

”No.”

That was the important part.

Stormhorns weren’t predators, and they didn’t hunt other creatures for food. They were grazing herd animals built around an unusually aggressive defensive system.

Their behavior followed a hierarchy.

Detection first.

Assessment second.

Repositioning third.

Only after that did they choose between intimidation, attack, or flight.

Raven explained it aloud.

”If something enters detection range, the sentries watch it. If it keeps approaching, the adults shift themselves between the threat and the young. If it crosses whatever distance they consider dangerous, one of the outer adults confronts it.”

”Like yesterday,” Valeria said.

”Yes.”

”And if the threat keeps coming?”

”Then they escalate.”

Roland looked at the horn on the Elite Courser.

”By running through it.”

”Probably.”

”And when does the whole herd flee?”

”That’s what I want to know.”

They got the answer less than an hour later.

A gray feline predator appeared along the western ridge.

It was large enough that Predation identified it even from a distance.

[Velis Ridgecat — Level 18 — Awakened.]

The Ridgecat wasn’t stalking the adult Stormhorns.

Its attention was on the foals.

The Level Twenty-Seven Courser detected it first.

Raven saw the entire sequence.

Its head rose.

Neck stiffened.

Ears turned forward.

Then one hoof struck the earth.

Once.

The herd reacted to the signal immediately.

Foals moved inward.

Juveniles tightened around them.

Six adults spread into a broad outer arc facing the ridge.

But the herd did not run.

Valeria leaned forward.

”They’re holding position.”

”Yes.”

The Ridgecat continued closer.

Four hundred meters.

Three hundred fifty.

The Stormhorns watched.

At roughly three hundred meters, the Elite Courser left the defensive line.

Not toward the herd.

Toward the predator.

Roland frowned.

”It’s going after it.”

”No.”

Raven watched the distance.

”It’s pushing it away.”

The Elite Courser advanced at a controlled trot, keeping itself directly between the Ridgecat and the foals.

The cat stopped.

The Stormhorn stopped too.

Neither attacked.

For several seconds, the two animals simply watched each other.

Then the Courser lowered its horn.

The pale lines beneath its forelegs brightened slightly.

A warning charge.

Not enough for Kinetic Pulse.

Enough for the Ridgecat to understand.

The predator backed away.

The Stormhorn followed for another fifty meters before stopping.

It didn’t chase.

It didn’t try to kill the Ridgecat.

Once the predator had turned away from the herd, the Courser returned to the perimeter.

Raven lowered the scope.

”There.”

Roland looked at him.

”There what?”

”They don’t pursue threats unnecessarily.”

Valeria understood before Roland did.

”Their goal is protection, not killing.”

”Yes.”

That changed the hunt considerably.

The Level Twenty-Seven Stormhorn had charged Raven yesterday because Raven had crossed its tolerance zone and then displayed sudden movement.

But after Raven escaped the charge and stopped advancing, the Courser had disengaged.

Exactly the same pattern.

Detect.

Assess.

Intercept.

Drive away.

Return.

It only became a lethal attack if the intruder refused to leave or threatened the herd directly.

Roland looked toward the animals.

”So if we make it think we’re predators, the herd closes around the young.”

”Yes.”

”And if we scare all of them badly enough, they run.”

”Yes.”

”Which we don’t want.”

”No.”

Valeria tapped one finger against her knee.

”So you need a threat large enough to make the Elite investigate, but not large enough to trigger a herd-wide escape.”

Raven looked at her.

”Exactly.”

”And once it investigates?”

”Make retreating toward the herd less attractive than following us.”

Roland stared at him.

”You’re planning to lure the animal that outran Burst Step.”

”I’m planning to exploit what it already wants to do.”

”Which is?”

Raven raised the scope again.

”Remove threats from the herd.”

That was much easier than convincing it to abandon the herd for no reason.

They kept watching.

The Stormhorns rested in shifts.

Never all at once.

While some grazed, others remained standing. When several foals slept, at least four adults positioned themselves around them, with the Level Twenty-Seven specimen usually taking whichever side had the worst visibility or wind.

It wasn’t the herd’s leader.

It was its most experienced defender.

That explained the scars.

It also explained why it was an ideal target.

The animal was more likely than the others to leave the formation and confront danger alone.

Raven didn’t need to separate it by force.

He needed to become a problem the Courser decided to solve personally.

Valeria looked at him.

”You’re smiling.”

”I’m not.”

”Barely.”

Raven ignored her.

Half an hour later, the Level Twenty-Seven Stormhorn started running.

There was no threat this time.

It was simply moving toward another patch of grass.

Raven straightened slightly.

”Now.”

Valeria followed his gaze.

The Courser began at a normal gallop.

One stride, then another, then a third.

The blue-white lines beneath its skin began to glow progressively brighter, each step adding intensity.

Predation reacted.

[”Kinetic Pulse” Detected.]

[Biological Function: Converts Accumulated Mechanical Momentum + Mana into Directional Kinetic Discharge.]

[Observed Functions: Burst Acceleration / Impact Amplification / Rapid Momentum Recovery.]

Raven didn’t look away.

There was no major external buildup of mana.

That mattered.

The energy wasn’t accumulating around the body.

It remained inside.

The Pulse Core absorbed part of the animal’s mechanical momentum, combined it with mana, then returned both as a stronger kinetic release.

The Courser discharged.

BOOM.

The ground erupted behind it as its body shot forward with almost no visible transition.

Not teleportation.

Raven could still track it.

Barely.

The animal crossed more than forty meters before the glow began to fade, then continued running without losing its normal pace.

That mattered too.

Kinetic Pulse didn’t replace ordinary locomotion.

It layered acceleration on top of existing momentum.

Raven watched the next cycle.

Five strides to recharge.

Another discharge.

Then four strides before the next.

Predation expanded the analysis.

[Mechanical Momentum Retention Confirmed.]

[Repeated Activation Possible While Continuous Locomotion Is Maintained.]

[Biological Strain: LOW at Current Output.]

[Pulse Core Efficiency: EXCELLENT.]

Raven kept watching longer than necessary.

Valeria noticed.

”You like it.”

Raven lowered the scope.

”It’s useful.”

”Lately that word has meant far too many things.”

”This time it means exactly what it sounds like.”

”That’s the worrying part.”

Raven looked back toward the animal.

Yes.

He liked it.

Kinetic Acceleration already allowed him to impart a sudden burst of speed into an object or a specific movement.

Burst Step converted mana directly into immediate displacement.

Kinetic Pulse filled the gap between them.

Stored motion.

Reused motion.

Force converted into more force.

Predation reached the same conclusion.

[Potential Trait Synergy Detected.]

[”Kinetic Pulse” + ”Kinetic Acceleration”: HIGH.]

[”Kinetic Pulse” + ”Burst Step”: HIGH.]

[Possible Applications: Acceleration Amplification / Momentum Recovery / Directional Discharge / Strike Enhancement.]

[Full Biological Compatibility Analysis Requires Fresh Trait Source.]

Raven stopped looking through the scope for a moment.

That changed things.

Kinetic Pulse wasn’t merely a useful Skill.

It fit almost perfectly into what he already had.

Valeria watched his expression.

”That was different.”

”What?”

”Predation just offered you something.”

”Not yet.”

”But it saw a possibility.”

Raven looked at her.

”How do you know?”

”Because you make the same face when FORGE detects an excellent component.”

Roland spoke from behind them.

”What face?”

Valeria answered without taking her eyes off Raven.

”The one he makes when he’s just discovered a new way to complicate his life.”

Raven raised the scope again.

”It has synergy with Burst Step and Kinetic Acceleration.”

Valeria stopped smiling.

”How much?”

”High with both.”

”That is tempting.”

”Yes.”

There was no irony in the answer.

Valeria noticed.

Raven had no reason to pretend otherwise.

If he killed the Stormhorn and Predation confirmed good compatibility, DEVOUR would be an excellent option.

But the observation had given him something just as valuable as the potential Trait.

A hunting pattern.

The Elite Courser did not chase prey.

It did not roam looking for fights.

It detected threats near the herd, confronted them, drove them beyond its tolerance range, and then disengaged.

Which meant Raven didn’t need to outrun it.

He only needed to control where the Courser believed the herd ended and the threat began.

That converted the hunt from a speed contest into a positioning problem.

Raven preferred positioning problems.
