Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

Valeria shifted slightly in her chair.

Oren spoke first.

”That shaft is closed.”

”So I heard.”

”Structural instability.”

”Curious.”

”What exactly is curious about it?”

Raven picked up the eighty-one-percent Black Mithril sample.

”That a closed shaft appears in records connected to shipments of high-purity Black Mithril.”

Oren held his gaze.

”That proves nothing.”

”I didn’t say it did.”

”You implied it.”

”You supplied the conclusion.”

Mara let out a quiet breath through her nose.

Oren looked at her.

”Something to add?”

”Only that Raven is right. You were the one who started arguing about proof.”

Edric turned the document toward himself.

”Where did you get this?”

Raven didn’t answer immediately.

”A transfer station.”

”That is not a complete answer.”

”It’s the relevant part.”

Edric read several lines.

”This station does not appear in any Helmont registry.”

Valeria smiled without humor.

”That was apparently one of its advantages.”

Mara took the document next.

Her expression changed when she reached the cargo codes.

”This numbering system...”

Raven watched her.

”You recognize it.”

”I recognize the structure. Keller Mining uses a standardized internal code for source, refinement stage, and declared loss.”

Oren stepped forward.

”Mara.”

She ignored him.

”If this document is genuine, these entries were generated using Keller’s own accounting format.”

Oren’s expression hardened.

”Using the format does not make the records genuine.”

”Correct,” Raven said.

He reached into his coat and placed the authentic shipping certificate beside the copied ledger page.

”Which is why I brought this.”

Oren looked at it.

Raven watched his eyes move first to the seal, then the authorization line, then the shipment code.

Recognition.

Not surprise at the object itself.

Recognition of a valid company document.

”That certificate was stolen,” Oren said.

Raven leaned back slightly.

”So it’s genuine.”

Oren paused.

Mara looked at him.

Edric did too.

Oren corrected himself.

”It appears genuine.”

”Better.”

Edric picked up the certificate.

”Keller Mining seal. Central office authorization.”

Valeria added, ”Recovered with records from the same route.”

Edric looked toward Raven.

”Now explain the connection.”

Raven pointed to the copied ledger.

”These are the declared refining losses for North Shaft Seven.”

Then to the certificate.

”This authorized movement of material through Keller-linked logistics.”

Finally, he tapped a third line.

”And this identifies low-purity Black Mithril entering Transfer Station Four.”

Mara frowned.

”That still does not prove the material came from North Shaft Seven.”

”No,” Raven said. ”Not by itself.”

He appreciated the distinction.

Evidence became weaker when people tried to force it further than it actually reached.

”What it proves is that Keller Mining documents, Keller shipment authorization, and Black Mithril used at the station were all part of the same logistical chain.”

Edric’s attention sharpened.

”And North Shaft Seven?”

”Correlation.”

Raven pointed to the numbers.

”The shaft was officially downgraded after its deeper section was declared unstable. After that, its reported refining losses increased.”

Mara studied the figures.

”How much?”

”Enough to be noticeable over months. Not enough to attract attention in a single report.”

She read several entries.

Then another.

Her brow tightened.

”These percentages repeat.”

”Yes.”

”That is wrong.”

Edric looked at her.

”Why?”

Mara placed the pages side by side.

”Different batches produce different waste. Ore composition varies. Contamination varies. Refining efficiency varies. You might see similar averages over time, but not identical loss bands repeating across unrelated batches.”

Raven nodded.

”That was my conclusion.”

Mara traced one column with a finger.

”Seven point four. Seven point six. Seven point five. Then seven point four again.”

Oren said nothing.

Mara looked toward him.

”If these reports are accurate, someone is smoothing the losses.”

Edric’s expression darkened.

”Meaning?”

”Material is being removed before final yield is declared, then hidden inside the expected waste percentage.”

Now the chain was clear.

Raven pointed toward the restraint sample he had brought from Transfer Station Four.

”This was analyzed independently by FORGE.”

He didn’t explain more than necessary.

”Low-purity Black Mithril. Composition consistent with Dunvar refining waste.”

Mara looked at the restraint.

”What purity?”

”Just over twenty percent.”

”That fits discarded material.”

”Exactly.”

Raven continued.

”So I have three things.”

He raised one finger.

”Keller documentation showing unusually consistent losses from North Shaft Seven.”

A second.

”Authentic Keller shipping authorization tied to the same hidden logistics network.”

A third.

”And Black Mithril suppression equipment recovered at the destination, made from material consistent with refinery waste.”

He looked at Oren.

”That does not prove you personally ordered any of it.”

Oren’s eyes narrowed.

”But it proves someone with access to Keller’s logistics has been diverting Black Mithril.”

That was much harder to dismiss.

Edric looked toward Oren.

”Director?”

Oren kept his voice level.

”Assuming the documents are authentic, it proves diversion. Not source.”

”Correct,” Raven said.

Oren looked at him sharply.

Raven continued before he could recover.

”Which is why your reaction to North Shaft Seven matters.”

Mara’s eyes shifted between them.

Oren’s jaw tightened.

”That is not evidence.”

”No.”

Raven agreed immediately.

”It’s a deduction.”

That distinction made Edric pay closer attention.

Raven leaned forward.

”When I mentioned Keller Mining, you stayed calm.”

Oren said nothing.

”When I mentioned the laboratory, you stayed calm.”

Still nothing.

”When I mentioned Bloodline extraction, you denied knowing about it.”

Raven watched him.

”I believe that denial.”

Mara blinked.

Even Oren looked briefly surprised.

Raven continued.

”But when I said Transfer Station Four, your expression changed.”

Oren’s face became unreadable.

”And when I said North Shaft Seven, you stopped arguing about whether Keller material was involved and started arguing about whether I had proof.”

Valeria leaned back slightly.

She had already understood where Raven was going.

Edric had not.

Now he did.

Raven finished.

”That suggests you know about the logistical side of the operation but not everything at its destination.”

Oren spoke carefully.

”You are basing that on facial expressions.”

”No. I’m using your reactions to decide which documented facts deserve pressure.”

Raven tapped the papers again.

”The documents establish diversion.”

Tap.

”The authentic seal establishes access.”

Tap.

”The restraint establishes destination use.”

Then he looked directly at Oren.

”Your behavior suggests you already knew part of that chain existed.”

Silence.

Much cleaner.

Much more dangerous.

Edric folded his hands.

”Director Keller. Is Raven wrong?”

Oren didn’t answer immediately.

Mara looked at him.

That delay mattered more now because the evidence had already narrowed what he could plausibly deny.

Oren finally said,

”I knew certain material was being moved through secondary channels.”

Valeria’s expression cooled.

”How secondary?”

”I was told it was unregistered commercial diversion.”

”Smuggling,” Raven translated.

Oren ignored him.

”Off-book sales. Tax avoidance. Restricted buyers. Nothing involving laboratories.”

Raven believed him.

Not because Oren sounded sincere.

Because the reactions matched.

He had reacted defensively to logistics.

Not with horror.

The horror had come from Mara.

Oren had looked irritated.

That meant the laboratory was probably outside his compartment.

Edric asked,

”And North Shaft Seven?”

Oren stayed silent.

That answer was already forming.

Raven pushed once.

”The deeper vein.”

Oren looked at him.

Raven continued.

”You knew that too.”

A muscle moved in Oren’s jaw.

”Not its final destination.”

”Again, not what I asked.”

Edric’s eyes hardened.

”Oren.”

The use of his first name changed the room.

Oren exhaled slowly.

”There is a deeper vein.”

Mara closed her eyes briefly.

Edric did not move.

”How pure?”

Oren hesitated.

Raven looked at the eighty-one-percent sample on the table.

”Above eighty.”

Oren’s silence confirmed enough.

Edric’s voice went flat.

”Was it declared?”

”No.”

Now they had something concrete.

Not inference.

Admission.

Valeria’s fingers tapped once against the arm of her chair.

Edric asked,

”Why?”

”Keller Mining was under margin pressure. The vein was supposed to stabilize the company’s finances before Helmont renegotiated concession terms.”

”And instead?”

Oren’s mouth tightened.

”Someone offered more.”

There it was.

Raven watched Edric carefully.

That was the first statement that connected the secret vein to the larger network without requiring Raven to infer motive.

”Who?” Edric asked.

”I never met the buyer.”

”Code?”

Oren’s eyes moved toward Raven.

He already knew that question had become unavoidable.

”Patron Seven.”

Valeria went still.

Raven did not.

Another independent link.

Transfer Station Four had given them the same code.

That changed the evidentiary structure completely.

Before, North Shaft Seven had been a probable source.

Now the same sponsor connected both the Bloodline research program and the undeclared Black Mithril purchases.

Edric saw it too.

Raven took out a second copied page.

”This code appeared in the station records.”

He placed it beside Oren.

Oren looked down.

His expression changed.

Not recognition this time.

Realization.

”You already knew.”

”I suspected.”

Raven corrected himself.

”Now I know.”

That distinction mattered.

Mara looked between the two records.

”So Patron Seven financed the diversion.”

”And the research,” Valeria said.

Oren looked at her.

”What research?”

”The hereditary extraction laboratory.”

For the first time, Oren looked genuinely disturbed.

Raven watched closely.

No controlled pause.

No defensive anger.

Actual surprise.

That strengthened the earlier conclusion.

He really hadn’t known. ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Edric noticed too.

”You sold strategic-grade Black Mithril to an unidentified patron without knowing what it was being used for.”

Oren’s face hardened.

”I sold undeclared production through intermediaries.”

”That is not better.”

”I know.”

Raven believed that too.

Before he could press further, the door opened.

An attendant entered and whispered into Edric’s ear.

The nobleman frowned.

”Let him in.”

The attendant withdrew.

Valeria adjusted her posture slightly.

”Problem?”

”Possibly.”

The door opened again.

The man who entered wore light gray embroidered with silver and a small brooch shaped like a black tower pierced by a spear.

Valeria recognized the symbol before Raven did.

”Orbrecht.”

The newcomer smiled.

Not Cassian.

Older.

More careful.

”Lady Valeria. Always pleasant to find a familiar face so far from home.”

”Lord Severin.”

Valeria did not sound pleased.

Severin Orbrecht looked at Raven.

The smile remained.

”And you must be Raven Ashford.”

”That depends on why you’re asking.”

”Curious. Lord Cassian dies, and shortly afterward the mercenary traveling with Lady von Nacht begins appearing in very profitable places.”

Raven studied him.

Unknown Level.

Probably Elite.

Irrelevant.

This was not a fight.

Yet.

”I also appear in places with a large number of corpses. I wouldn’t recommend using correlation as evidence.”

Severin laughed softly.

”I heard you had a sense of humor.”

”Depends on the audience.”

”Cassian didn’t find it amusing.”

”Cassian made a lot of bad decisions.”

The atmosphere changed.

Not mana.

Politics.

Edric still didn’t intervene.

He wanted to see where this went.

Severin stepped closer.

”Are you admitting you know the circumstances of his death?”

”I was there.”

”And did you participate?”

”Yes.”

Valeria turned slightly toward Raven.

Not because the answer surprised her.

Because it was far too direct.

Severin smiled as though Raven had just handed him exactly what he wanted.

”That simplifies matters considerably—”

Valeria cut him off.

”It simplifies very little.”

Severin looked at her.

”Lady von Nacht.”

”Cassian Orbrecht used indebted workers as bait for an Elite creature, attempted to seize rewards that did not belong to him, and escalated a situation that ended with his death.”

”That is a convenient interpretation.”

”There were witnesses.”

”Bought witnesses.”

”Then file a formal accusation.”

Severin didn’t answer.

Valeria moved slightly closer to Raven.

”Raven Ashford is here under my invitation and is currently participating in negotiations with House Helmont. If House Orbrecht wishes to turn suspicion into formal proceedings, I’m sure Lord Helmont can provide an appropriate room.”

Edric smiled faintly.

Severin understood the problem.

Informally accusing Raven was easy.

Detaining him while he stood under the social protection of a von Nacht, inside a Helmont residence, without formal charges and in front of noble witnesses was something else entirely.
