They found the first basalt formation at sunset.

It wasn’t a pillar exactly, but an eroded ridge of black stone jutting from the earth like the exposed rib of something enormous.

Deep grooves marked the base.

Courser hoofprints.

Raven touched the stone.

A static discharge snapped through his glove hard enough to make his fingers twitch.

Valeria noticed.

”That strong?”

”Strong enough.”

He pointed toward blackened scars near the upper section.

”Impacts.”

”Lightning?”

”Repeatedly.”

Predation analyzed the traces embedded in the stone.

[Stormhorn Biological Trace Detected.]

[Residual Atmospheric Electrical Mana: HIGH.]

[Repeated Horn Contact Identified.]

[Recent Charge Activity Detected.]

Raven looked around.

There were more formations.

Not one isolated ridge, but an irregular line stretching south across the grassland. Some barely rose above the earth, while others stood more than ten meters tall.

Mineral-rich basalt.

Exactly what Bram had described.

Also exactly the sort of place where standing in the wrong location during a storm would kill a person before the Stormhorn had the opportunity.

Roland caught up with them near the end of the afternoon.

”The herd is moving again.”

Raven looked west.

”Direction?”

”South-southeast.”

Toward the basalt.

Valeria understood immediately.

”So they seek these formations when the weather changes.”

Raven nodded.

The wind had already strengthened enough to flatten sections of grass.

The clouds gathering in the west were no longer white. They had become a solid gray-black front, heavy enough to erase the horizon beneath them.

Lightning flashed inside the storm.

The thunder arrived several seconds later.

Closer than before.

Raven watched the herd.

The adults were regrouping, with the foals moving toward the center. The Level Twenty-Seven Courser was already walking south ahead of several others.

Not from fear.

By choice.

That meant pattern.

A pattern became a route.

A route could become a trap.

If they survived long enough to use it.

They camped well away from the herd’s expected path.

Raven spent the last hour of usable light mapping the terrain.

Not beautifully.

Usefully.

Basalt formations.

Depressions.

Slopes.

The stream.

The herd’s position.

Potential retreat routes.

Places where lightning had struck recently.

And every stretch of ground where thirty panicked Stormhorns could turn their plan into a mass grave.

Valeria sat across from him.

”Explain.”

Raven looked up.

”Which part?”

”You’ve spent an hour moving stones around that map, and you look more satisfied every time. That usually means someone is about to have a terrible day.”

Roland was preparing food nearby.

”I would also like advance notice if that someone is us.”

”Probably a little.”

”I appreciate the honesty.”

Raven placed one stone on the map to represent the Elite Courser.

”We can’t chase it.”

Valeria rested an elbow on one knee.

”That has been thoroughly demonstrated.”

”We also can’t trap it with a simple linear obstruction. It can redirect Kinetic Pulse too quickly.”

”Also thoroughly demonstrated. Mostly by your back.”

Raven ignored that.

”But it doesn’t choose direction randomly. It follows priorities.”

”Water,” Valeria said.

”The herd.”

”Threats.”

”And electrical charge.”

Valeria looked toward the basalt.

”The storm.”

”The basalt after the storm strikes it.”

Roland came closer.

”So we wait for it to approach one by itself.”

”Not necessarily.”

Raven moved several smaller stones.

”The herd will follow a broad route. The larger adults stay on the perimeter, and our target tends to separate farther than the rest to watch exposed approaches.”

”That still leaves thirty animals nearby.”

”Yes.”

Roland stared at him.

”That wasn’t reassuring.”

”It wasn’t meant to be.”

Raven marked three basalt formations near a shallow depression.

”This section sits outside the herd’s easiest route. The basalt here has more lightning scars and more horn contact than the surrounding formations.”

Valeria understood first.

”The Stormhorns prefer it.”

”Probably because it retains more electrical mana.”

”And you want the Elite to choose it.”

”I want to make every other choice worse.”

That distinction mattered.

Forcing something that fast was difficult.

Convincing it that Raven’s chosen ground was already the safest and most valuable destination was easier.

Not safe.

Easier.

Valeria studied the map.

”How?”

Raven pointed toward the northern flank.

”Roland applies pressure here. Long range. No shots at the Courser itself. Put arrows behind it and along the outer approach.”

”To move it south.”

”Yes.”

He indicated the eastern side next.

”You keep the herd away from this depression. Blood scent and visible movement, but no direct attack.”

Valeria frowned.

”Stormhorns react to blood?”

”Large herd animals react to unknown blood because it suggests predators or injury.”

”You want that route to feel unsafe without creating enough panic to make the whole herd bolt.”

”Exactly.”

Roland looked at the map.

”And if they do bolt?”

Raven pointed toward the western slope.

”We leave immediately.”

Roland waited.

”That’s the entire contingency?”

”If thirty Stormhorns panic at once, we are no longer hunting.”

Valeria’s gaze shifted toward the distant herd.

”We’re surviving.”

”Yes.”

That made Roland considerably less amused.

Raven tapped the central depression.

”If the herd breaks toward us, abandon the equipment. Don’t try to recover anything. Don’t stand behind a basalt formation either.”

”Because of the lightning?”

”Because a charging Stormhorn will use the rock as less resistance than your body.”

Roland looked at the pillars.

”I liked them more before you explained that.”

Raven moved the stone representing the Elite.

”If everything works, the herd stays outside the depression while the Level Twenty-Seven enters from here.”

Valeria raised an eyebrow.

”And you?”

”I separate it once it reaches the basalt.”

Silence.

”That,” she said, ”is the part of the plan that still doesn’t exist.”

”It partially exists.”

”That means it doesn’t exist.”

”I know what the Courser needs to do first.”

”What?”

Raven looked toward the storm.

Another flash illuminated the underside of the clouds.

”Charge the Core.”

Valeria slowly closed her eyes.

”I knew you were going to say something like that.”

Roland looked between them.

”Explain why we are deliberately making the thing that almost ran him over even faster.”

Raven opened FORGE.

[High-Charge Pulse Core Projected Benefits:]

[Improved Kinetic Retention.]

[Increased Output Ceiling.]

[Superior Compatibility Probability.]

[Warning: High-charge specimen expected to exceed current evasive tolerance.]

Roland pointed at the last line.

”That one seems important.”

”It is.”

Valeria looked at Raven.

”How much faster?”

”Unknown.”

”That is not an acceptable answer.”

”It’s the only accurate one.”

FORGE updated again.

[Projected Host Survival Against Direct High-Charge Impact: LOW.]

Valeria read the line over his shoulder.

”No.”

Raven closed the interface.

”I’m not planning to be hit.”

”You also didn’t plan to roll down a hill yesterday.”

”That was different.”

”How?”

”The hill wasn’t trying to kill me.”

Roland rubbed both hands over his face.

”This conversation is making the horse sound safer.”

Raven folded part of the map.

”I won’t let it charge indefinitely.”

Valeria didn’t move.

”How much?”

”Enough to stabilize the Core at a higher output without reaching whatever its maximum is.”

”That is still vague.”

”Because we don’t know its maximum.”

”And if you guess wrong?”

Raven looked toward the storm front.

”Then we abort.”

Valeria held his gaze.

”You mean that?”

”Yes.”

No joke.

No technicality.

That seemed to matter more than anything else he could have said.

Valeria nodded once.

”Fine.”

Roland looked between them.

”Good. Excellent. We finally found a line even Raven won’t cross.”

Raven thought about the Glassfang.

The Queen.

The Broodmother.

Deepwell.

North Shaft Seven.

Valeria noticed.

”Do not ruin the moment.”

Raven said nothing.

That was probably safer.

The storm arrived before dawn.

Raven woke to thunder so deep it seemed to travel through the earth before reaching the air.

The entire camp shuddered.

He opened his eyes.

Wind hammered the canvas.

Rain had already started.

Not a steady drizzle.

Heavy drops driven almost sideways.

Roland was on his feet.

Valeria came out of her tent while fastening her coat.

”I assume sleep is over.”

Lightning flashed.

The thunder followed almost immediately.

Too close.

Raven looked toward the basalt line.

The herd was already moving.

Even through the rain, dark shapes were visible crossing the plain toward the black stone.

They weren’t fleeing the storm.

They were running into it.

A lightning strike hit one of the distant formations.

The sound arrived like artillery.

The herd accelerated.

Raven started gathering equipment.

The plan still had too many variables.

Perfect didn’t exist.

Only better than improvising everything while thirty magical animals and a thunderstorm tried to kill you.

Valeria approached while he checked the ropes.

”You have that expression again.”

”Which one?”

”The one that means you’ve stopped asking whether the plan will work and started calculating what to do when it fails.”

Raven tightened the final knot.

”That’s part of the same plan.”

A second lightning strike landed closer.

One of the hidden stakes vibrated in the wet ground.

Raven looked at it.

Too much rain would soften the soil.

That reduced holding strength.

Another variable.

Roland came down from his observation point.

”The herd changed direction.”

”How much?”

”About fifteen degrees east.”

Raven looked toward the route.

That put them closer to the depression.

Too close.

”If they continue another ten degrees, Valeria abandons the eastern pressure point.”

She frowned.

”That opens their route.”

”It also keeps you from standing in front of the herd.”

”Reasonable.”

”Extremely specific circumstances,” Raven said.

Valeria stared at him.

”You remembered that?”

”Yes.”

A third strike hit the basalt.

This one was close enough that Raven felt the static charge rise along his arms before the thunder arrived.

The Stormhorns reacted instantly.

Several raised their horns.

Blue-white lines ignited beneath their skin.

The Level Twenty-Seven Courser moved ahead.

Its horn pointed toward the tallest basalt ridge.

FORGE reacted.

[Target Pulse Core Charge Increasing.]

[Current Estimated Output: 118% of previously observed baseline.]

Then:

[126%.]

Valeria saw Raven’s expression.

”How high are you letting it go?”

Raven watched the Courser.

”Not much higher.”

[133%.]

The animal accelerated.

The herd began to spread behind it.

Too much.

Raven saw one of the juveniles angle toward the depression.

If the rest followed, the trap was useless.

Worse, Roland would be directly in their movement corridor.

Raven raised two fingers.

Roland saw the signal from the ridge.

He fired.

The arrow landed behind the juvenile.

Not close enough to injure it.

Close enough to turn it.

The animal veered.

Three others followed.

The herd shifted back.

Good.

Then lightning struck the tallest basalt pillar.

The world went white.

Raven heard nothing for a fraction of a second.

Then the thunder hit hard enough to make his teeth ache.

The Elite Courser raised its horn directly into the residual discharge.

Blue-white light crawled down the horn, across the skull, and into the lines beneath its chest.

FORGE changed immediately.

[Pulse Core Charge Spike Detected.]

[Estimated Output: 161%.]

[WARNING: Target Acceleration Now Exceeds Previous Evasion Model.]

Valeria read it.

”Raven.”

”I know.”

[174%.]

The Courser lowered its head.

Its hooves struck the ground once.

The earth cracked beneath them.

The hidden ropes suddenly looked much thinner.

The stakes looked much smaller.

And the distance between Raven and the animal looked considerably shorter.

Valeria stepped closer.

”Abort?”

Raven watched the herd.

The others were still outside the depression.

Roland had maintained position.

The Elite was entering alone.

Exactly as planned.

Except it was carrying almost twice the kinetic output Raven had measured yesterday.

Raven drew his knife.

”Not yet.”

Valeria’s expression hardened.

”You said you’d abort if the charge went too high.”

”I said if I guessed wrong.”

She looked at the glowing Courser.

”And?”

Raven watched the creature choose the depression.

The ropes.

The stakes.

The basalt.

The ground he had spent hours studying.

Lightning flashed behind it.

”I didn’t guess wrong.”

The Stormhorn started running.

FORGE flashed one final warning.

[DIRECT IMPACT SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: CRITICAL.]

Raven lowered his center of gravity.

For the first time, he didn’t need to chase it.

The monster was coming to him.

And now it was much faster than the one he had planned for.

Raven smiled faintly.

”That,” Valeria said, ”is not a reassuring expression.”

The Courser discharged Kinetic Pulse.

BOOM.

Raven’s smile disappeared.

”Move.”
