The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The offer wasn’t a threat, and that made it worse, because Austin Veyron had spent his whole life learning how to fight threats and almost none of it learning how to refuse a gift.

He carried the blank contract across the Core Ledger bridge, which stretched over a black-blue void beneath Ledgerdeep so deep that the bottom seemed to swallow the light, and each step revealed a different line of the contract, written in ink that moved like water across the page.

SIGN TO PROTECT EVERY ROUTE WITHOUT PERMISSION.

SIGN TO END DELAY.

SIGN TO MAKE HELP CERTAIN.

The archive director waited at the far end, inside a round and silent chamber where a massive book stood open at the center with pages larger than city walls. Blue pipes ran from its spine into every market route, every water contract, every transport permit, and every hidden ledger beneath the world, and the air smelled of old paper, cold metal, and the faint copper tang of ink that had been mixed with something other than water. The director stood beside those open pages with his black-blue blade chain wrapped around one arm, his robes stained at the cuffs from years of turning pages no one else had ever been allowed to read.

”You already take power from demons,” he said. ”You already decide what to consume, so don’t pretend you’re different from me just because you dislike the word owner.”

Austin Veyron looked down at the contract in his hand, and the accusation landed because it wasn’t entirely false, since DEVOUR made every hunger look like an opportunity, and the difference between taking a claim and taking a source often felt dangerously thin whenever he was afraid people would die while he waited.

Veyra stepped up beside him. ”Name it.”

”I want to sign.”

”And what would it make?”

”The person who never has to ask again.”

Sable held the crown shard between the contract and Austin Veyron’s wrist mark. ”Then we ask what the contract takes from everyone else.”

Tessa and Ceryn studied the moving terms without touching them, leaning close enough to read the smaller lines that shifted beneath the larger promises.

”Protection is conditional,” Tessa said. ”It makes Austin Veyron the sole emergency authority over every route connected to the ledger.”

Ceryn found a second line hidden under the promise. ”Every local refusal becomes a delay, and every delay becomes permission for the signer to override it.”

Nyra held the heart shard over the blank page, and blue-black boundary light formed around it in a slow ring. ”The contract wants to attach to his DEVOUR seed. If he signs, it won’t just grant him authority, it’ll make refusal from anyone else feel like an obstacle the seed needs to consume.”

The director smiled at that. ”That’s what protection requires, a hand willing to act when everyone else hesitates.”

Juna stepped forward with her jaw set. ”You built hesitation into the system yourself. You hide information and create debt, then call people slow for not choosing fast enough while they’re blindfolded.”

Petra added quietly, ”The council did the same thing. We created emergency clauses so we could call ownership efficiency.”

The Core Ledger answered them both, and tailored-clause manifestations rose from its open pages in the shapes of every crisis Austin Veyron had faced on this road, a flood boat, a water cistern, a canal lock, a frost route, and a hunger road, each of them speaking with the same voice.

ONLY Austin Veyron CAN ACT IN TIME.

The flood boat showed Fenmarch drowning while its crews argued on the docks, the cistern showed Seregate running dry while Vela waited for permission that never came, and the lock showed canal workers burning while heat counts circulated far too slowly to save them. They weren’t simple illusions, because they were the fears Austin Veyron carried from every failure he hadn’t been able to prevent, and DEVOUR rose inside him hard enough to hurt, promising that he could sign and make every one of those fears stop.

Veyra didn’t grab him or pull him back. ”What do you want?”

”To believe I can save them all.”

”And what would it make?”

”The reason they stop saving each other.”

Sable’s white shard flared, and the core phrase surfaced beneath the manifestations, written larger than the rest.

ONLY Austin Veyron CAN ACT IN TIME.

The contract didn’t actually promise protection, and Austin Veyron finally saw that clearly, because what it really claimed was that every other person in the world was too slow to matter.

”Target,” Austin Veyron said. ”The only-Austin-Veyron-in-time claim. Not the routes, the crises, or the people who respond to them.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable answered.

Austin Veyron laid the white root chain across the blank contract.

DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like every alarm in the world ringing at once inside one man’s skull.

ONLY Austin Veyron CAN ACT IN TIME.

He consumed only.

The flood boat manifestation split into several routes, each carrying a crew’s name and destination count, while the cistern showed Sera, Vela, and the valve workers opening side channels together, and the lock showed Asha’s rotating crews and Sali guiding the heat flow. The fears remained, because nothing could make them vanish entirely, but they no longer erased everyone else from the answer.

The director’s blade chain snapped toward Austin Veyron’s throat, and Veyra intercepted it, her sword knocking the black-blue links aside in a shower of sparks, while Rin lunged in low and drove her claws through one link to pin it against the Core Ledger page without piercing the writing beneath. Tamsin shoved the director back from the engine pipes with the shaft of her spear as Nyra held the blank contract’s boundary steady.

The director snarled through his teeth. ”You can’t operate a world by committee.”

”No,” Tessa replied. ”But you also can’t call your theft a system just because it has gears.”

She laid the witness map copies beside the Core Ledger, and Ceryn added the Fenmarch linked records, Juna placed the public index rules beside them, and Petra set down the Blue Merchant charter pages with her own testimony written in the margins. The evidence didn’t erase the Core Ledger, but it changed the margins, and for the first time the book’s enormous pages showed notes beside every ownership clause, asking WHO CHOOSES? WHO KNOWS? WHO CAN CHALLENGE? WHO PAYS?

The director reached for the central page with his free hand. ”Those questions will paralyze every market.”

”Then let them slow the parts that shouldn’t be easy,” Austin Veyron said.

The Core Ledger responded to the witness notes, and its blue pipes stopped sending hidden clause copies into the dark and became visible channels carrying the terms to public route boards instead, so that the book remained powerful, but its pages no longer treated secrecy as proof of authority.

The director’s blade chain began dissolving around his arm link by link, because his control over the engine had always been personal, and without the permissionless-protection claim and the hidden renewal mechanism, he was only a man standing beside a book far too large for anyone to own.

He glared at Austin Veyron with naked fury. ”You think refusing the contract makes you innocent?”

”No,” Austin Veyron said. ”It makes me responsible for refusing it again tomorrow.”

The director broke for a side passage, but Petra stepped into his path with two former archive clerks behind her, and they didn’t drag him into a secret vault the way he would have done to them. They brought him toward the open evidence wall instead, where every clerk, trader, and debtor in Ledgerdeep could see the record of what he had done.

The Core Ledger’s pages turned themselves with a sound like wind through a canyon, and a new map spread across the center pages, showing routes far beyond the Blue Merchant network, black roads crossing abandoned forts, sealed demon territories, broken freeholds, and hunger scars that crept toward every open passage. At the center of it all, a name was written in dark iron script.

THE BLACK TITHE.

Juna read the note beneath it, her voice dropping. ”Ancient demon territory, dormant beyond the eastern waste for centuries. The Blue Merchants paid it tribute to keep it away from the trade routes.”

Petra looked at the map and went very still. ”The council stopped paying after Ledgerdeep began failing, and now the Black Tithe is mobilizing. It doesn’t want contracts. It wants tribute in bodies and burned routes.”

The Core Ledger marked a line of black movement crawling toward the free route network, and Austin Veyron watched it advance across the page with a cold weight settling in his chest. The contract war was over, but its ruined routes still lay exposed across the whole map, and the next war was already marching out of the dark eastern waste toward every open freehold, refuge, and shelter they had just fought to keep free.
