The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The director’s descending bridge led far beneath Ledgerdeep’s outer archive, and Juna guided the team through black-blue tunnels where clause fragments crawled across the walls like insects. Each fragment repeated part of a market rule before it attached itself to the next one, until the stone itself seemed to be writing as they walked past it. The air smelled of wet ink and hot metal, and every footstep echoed back from the tunnel walls a half-second late, as though the engine were copying that too.

FEE BECOMES DEBT.

DEBT BECOMES CLAIM.

CLAIM BECOMES LAW.

”The Central Clause Engine links the steps together,” Juna said, keeping her voice low. ”A broker doesn’t need to create every contract by hand, because the engine teaches every market copy how to turn a need into ownership.”

Tessa carried the Fenmarch witness pattern on three separate sheets, while Ceryn held the linked evidence from Seregate, Brinewatch, and the Ember Canals close against their chest.

”Then we show it the missing step,” Tessa said. ”A need can become a public count. It doesn’t have to become a claim.”

Austin Veyron felt the engine far below them, and it was unlike any of the hunger sources he had faced before, because it didn’t roar or promise strength but offered order instead. If he devoured it, he could understand every contract in the world, identify every hidden ownership clause, and decide which agreements were allowed to survive, making himself the final judge of every price.

Veyra walked beside him and saw the thought settle on his face. ”What do you want?”

”The engine.”

”What would that create?”

”Someone who owns the difference between fair and unfair.”

Sable’s crown shard lit the tunnel ahead of them. ”Then we take the renewal claim, not the rules people choose.”

Clause constructs rose from the walls, built from folded blue ledgers, iron gears, and self-copying parchment, and whenever one was cut, a second one appeared with the same words written across its chest.

OWNERSHIP RENEWS ITSELF.

The first construct reached for Ceryn’s evidence sheets, and Rin’s claws tore through its parchment chest, but the hole closed at once and the words copied themselves onto the tunnel floor. Tamsin drove her spear through its iron gear, only for a second gear to spin out of the wall and take its place.

Veyra cut a path through two constructs and kept them away from Tessa’s witness patterns, while Sable pressed the crown shard to the copied clauses and exposed the hidden rewrite marks beneath them. Nyra raised the heart shard, and blue-black boundaries formed around the evidence sheets so the constructs couldn’t turn them into new claim templates.

Austin Veyron saw the core phrase written inside the self-copying paper.

OWNERSHIP RENEWS ITSELF.

That was the engine’s true defense, because it didn’t need any single broker to win when every ownership clause made the next one easier to write.

”Target,” Austin Veyron said. ”The ownership-renewal claim. Not the records, the contracts people choose, or the workers who use them.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

Austin Veyron pressed the white root chain into the self-copying parchment.

DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like a signature reproducing itself long after the hand had left the room.

OWNERSHIP RENEWS ITSELF.

He consumed renews.

The constructs stopped multiplying, and the copied phrases faded from the floor, leaving the original ledgers behind with their self-renewing marks finally visible as blue stains instead of invisible rules.

They reached the Central Clause Engine at last, and it filled an entire cavern beneath Ledgerdeep, a vast wheel of blue metal turning above a pool of dark ink. Thousands of narrow pipes ran from it into the trade tunnels, carrying clause fragments toward distant markets, and the whole chamber thrummed with a low mechanical heartbeat that Austin Veyron could feel in his teeth, while at the center stood the archive director with one hand on a control lever and the other holding his black-blue blade chain.

”You’ve followed witnesses into the root of trade,” he said. ”Now watch them fail to agree when it matters.”

He pulled the lever, and the engine began writing across the ink pool in letters that slid straight into the pipes.

EVERY NEED REQUIRES AN OWNER.

Tessa unfolded the Fenmarch witness pattern. ”No. Every need requires information, effort, and consent. Not an owner.”

Ceryn held up the Seregate water count. ”A need can require a public measure.”

Asha’s relay flashed from Cindervale. ”A need can require a lock crew.”

Oona’s harbor signal answered from Brinewatch. ”A need can require a flood plan.”

Sali’s ember relay followed. ”A need can require shared heat readings.”

One by one, evidence routes lit up along the engine pipes, not as commands but as counterexamples, each one proving that the director’s sentence wasn’t the only way a need could be answered.

The director struck the black-blue blade into the central wheel. ”Records are slow. Ownership is decisive.”

The engine released gear-constructs larger than any before, each one carrying EVERY NEED REQUIRES AN OWNER in glowing letters across its body, and one of them began moving toward the pipe network. If it reached the junction, the rewrite would spread into every market copy at once.

Austin Veyron ran, and when the construct swung an iron arm at him, Tamsin pulled him clear while Veyra struck the gear joint and Rin’s claws raked through the glowing letters. Sable held the crown shard against the engine wheel, preventing the director’s blade from sealing the rewrite into place.

Austin Veyron reached the construct’s chest, and DEVOUR wanted the whole engine, because the power was right there in front of him, every market, every route, and every secret ledger under one bite. But beneath the massive phrase, he saw the smaller target.

EVERY NEED REQUIRES AN OWNER.

”Target,” he said. ”The need-requires-owner claim. Not the needs, the pipe network, or the people meeting them.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

Austin Veyron placed the root chain across the glowing letters.

DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like a world where every empty bowl came with someone else’s key.

EVERY NEED REQUIRES AN OWNER.

He consumed owner.

The construct froze, and the engine wheel shuddered as the rewrite phrase broke apart across every pipe, leaving EVERY NEED behind as a condition while REQUIRES turned into a question and OWNER vanished altogether.

The director staggered back from the wheel, his free hand pressed against the cold metal for balance while the ink pool beneath him churned and bubbled like something trying to breathe. ”You’ve broken the economy of certainty,” he said.

”No,” Tessa answered. ”We broke your right to hide choices inside it.”

The Central Clause Engine didn’t stop, but it changed direction, and warning lights began flashing along three of the major pipes.

FENMARCH FLOOD RELIEF: FAILURE CONDITION.

SEREGATE WATER ROUTE: FAILURE CONDITION.

EMBER CANAL LOCKS: FAILURE CONDITION.

The director smiled again, even though blood-dark ink ran from his hand. ”If shared records are enough, prove it,” he said. ”I’ve forced three markets into collapse. Flood, thirst, and fire. Let every witness decide quickly enough.”

The engine sent emergency clauses racing outward, and the relay lattice answered all at once.

Marcus’s voice came from the Grand Meridian. ”Fenmarch flood boards are showing private rescue fees again. The local witnesses have the old records, but the emergency clause is trying to turn every boat into a charter asset.”

Sera answered from Seregate. ”The south cistern markers are demanding a water owner. Vela is holding the flow, but buyers are arriving with new tokens.”

Asha’s image flashed red with canal heat. ”The locks are receiving an emergency-buyer command through the old charter pipes. The crews are keeping the vents open, but the clause is trying to make the first repair team into a permanent authority.”

The director spread his arms toward the pipes. ”Three needs. Three failures. You can’t be in every place. So someone will own them, eventually.”

Tessa placed the counterevidence sheets around the engine basin. ”We aren’t in every place. The witnesses are.”

Ceryn began routing the linked records outward, sending Fenmarch the rescue logs and shelter counts, Seregate the public water compact and Vela’s chosen flow terms, and the Ember Canal crews the heat map, the lock agreement, and the emergency vent protocol. Every package carried the same warning: emergency conditions do not create an owner.

Nyra widened the heart shard’s boundary around the pipe junctions, her arm trembling with the strain. ”I can slow the clause, but I can’t stop it forever.”

”Then we give the regions time to speak,” Veyra said.

Austin Veyron looked at the three warning lines, and the old instinct urged him to pick one crisis, run there alone, and force a solution before anyone could disagree with him. He couldn’t be in three places at once, and he could only decide whether that fact made him desperate for power or willing to trust the people who were already there.

Veyra saw the choice settle in him. ”What do you want?”

”To control all three.”

”What would that create?”

”The same engine with a better face.”

Sable’s white shard brightened in the dark, steady as a lantern. ”Then hold the route open for the people who live there.”

Austin Veyron turned away from the wheel and toward the pipes, and as the warning lights pulsed across the cavern walls, he understood that the fight had split into three at once and that the war on three fronts had just begun.
