The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The echo traveled faster through the dead, without being seen.

The Lantern Ossuary lay below the eastern side of the Grave March.

Its entrance was a small opening in the rocks between two large graves, so narrow that someone walking past might never notice it. Below, blue-white lamps lined the walls. Each lantern held an old message burning within it: last orders, route information, warnings about dangers on the field of war, and the names of people who hadn’t survived. If Austin Veyron looked closely at a lamp, he could make out the words curling inside the flame before they dissolved into light. The air was cool and smelled of wax, like walking into a library no one had opened in years.

Nyra held the heart shard against one of the lamps.

”It’s using the lights to travel,” she said. ”These are all route points. If the echo gets to the signal tower at Lanternfall, it can talk to the whole frontier.”

Daria waited at the entrance to the ossuary with her hunters.

”My people will stay here at the March,” she said. ”The graves are quiet for now. I’ll send two guides to walk with you through the ossuary. They know where the old messages travel.”

The guides came forward. They were siblings, both grown hunters in gray coats, carrying long hooks made for reaching the lamps. They shared the same narrow face, and they had the same habit of looking at the lamps before they looked at anyone else, as if the light might tell them something people wouldn’t.

”We decide our route,” the sister said. ”Not the voice trapped inside these lamps.”

Ceryn passed them a copy of the map. Tessa pointed to it. ”Remember to count every lamp we pass. We need to know what we’re cutting and what we’re saving for the living.”

Austin Veyron walked into the Lantern Ossuary.

The first lamp spoke to him.

TAKE THE FASTEST ROAD.

His mark pulsed.

All of the lamps were connected, running from the Grave March out to every corner of the frontier. If he devoured them, he would know every message they carried. No matter where the echo traveled, he would know about it. He would be the only person with that knowledge.

It seemed like a good thing. People would live because someone had been warned in time. The echo would never surprise anyone again. But it also meant that no one else would know anything at all unless he chose to tell them.

Veyra walked beside him.

”Name it.”

”I want to devour the lantern routes.”

”And what would it make?”

”The only watcher.”

The lamps cast their cold blue glow across Sable’s crown shard. ”Then we make sure the count stays with everyone.”

One of the lamps flared.

Lantern wights crawled out of the crevices in the walls. Each was wrapped in old messenger cloth, with a blue flame burning inside its skull, and each held a letter in its hand.

THE DEAD ROAD BELONGS TO ITS KEEPER.

Rin shot an arrow at one of the letters. It burst into blue flame and reappeared in the hand of another wight. Orena drove her spear through one wight’s wrappings and pinned it to the wall. The flame inside its skull darted from side to side, searching for an escape, and the wight thrashed, clawing for the letter it no longer held.

The brother used his lantern hook to drag another wight out of the path.

”Be careful about breaking lamps,” he warned. ”Some of them lead to warning routes we still need.”

Austin Veyron saw the ownership line written in the wights’ letters.

”Target,” he said. ”The dead-road ownership clause. Not the lamps. Not the messages. Not the wights’ raw flame.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

Austin Veyron placed the white root chain on one of the blue letters.

DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like a watchtower locked from the inside.

THE DEAD ROAD BELONGS TO ITS KEEPER.

He consumed belongs.

The wight stopped moving. The flame left its body and drifted back into the nearest lamp. All the other wights went still, and the letters in their hands turned blank. The lamps stayed lit, but the route no longer belonged to a dead keeper.

Tessa marked the devoured claim on the map. Ceryn recorded how many lamps were lit.

”Thirty-two lamps on,” Ceryn said. ”Nine of them carry residue from the echo. The rest are old warning lines.”

They continued on.

Dozens of lamps hung from the roof of the ossuary’s main chamber like a sky full of cold stars. Beneath them lay grown message keepers, each in a stone bed, with a pale thread running from their chest to one of the lamps above. Their skin was pale and their eyes were closed. The only sounds were the soft hiss of the flames and a faint whisper rising from the keepers themselves, as if they were reading the messages aloud in their sleep.

One of the keepers opened her eyes as the group drew closer.

”Lanternfall,” she whispered. ”The echo has arrived.”

”Who are you?” Tessa asked.

”My name is Merin. We carried messages before the frontier had relay stones. The echo traveled into the tower line through us. It wants to control all of the old messages.”

Nyra took hold of the thread running from Merin’s chest. ”If we cut this without opening another route, her memories will burn away.”

The sister checked how many lamps were lit. ”There’s a repair channel that leads to Lanternfall. We can send one last message through it, then cut the echo’s claim.”

Merin looked at them. ”Can I decide?”

”Yes,” Ceryn said. ”You can decide whether to send the message.”

She thought for a long moment. The thread in her chest trembled, and the lamp above her flickered in time with her breathing.

”Send the message. Tell them never to let one person be in charge of the tower.”

Calder opened the channel, and Tessa wrote the message out on three separate lamp papers. Nyra held the boundary around Merin’s thread while the sister lifted her lantern hook.

The blue-white flame raced along the ossuary line.

At Lanternfall Outpost, the message lit up every old signal lamp.

DO NOT GIVE THE TOWER ONE KEEPER. KEEP THE COUNT OPEN. MANY WATCHES. THE ECHO IS COMING.

The echo spoke from the far end of the chamber.

A black-and-white flame appeared inside the biggest lantern.

”You try to warn them,” it said. ”I will give them answers. When the water supply fails at Lanternfall, they will listen to whoever can tell them what to do.”

The lamps began to shake. Fire flickered up and down the hall, and the message keepers started to twitch, as if they were all trapped in the same nightmare.

The echo had already reached the tower at the outpost. Its route was weaker now, but it could still speak through it.

Austin Veyron saw the command line running from the largest lamp to the rest of the chain.

ONE LANTERN. ONE VOICE.

”Target,” he said. ”The one-lantern-one-voice claim. Not the warning system. Not Merin. Not the lamps themselves.” ℴ

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable replied.

Austin Veyron pressed the root chain against the largest lantern.

DEVOUR opened. The claim tasted like a tower telling everyone what to do, louder than any voice that might answer back.

ONE LANTERN. ONE VOICE.

He consumed one.

The largest lamp cracked in half. Its blue flames split apart and scattered across the room. The echo’s claim was broken, but a small black-and-white flame escaped through the last repair channel.

Merin’s thread released from her chest. She took one deep breath and opened her eyes, clear and awake.

”The tower will still receive it,” she said. ”But it won’t be able to talk through every lamp.”

The ossuary began to dim.

The brother closed off the repair channel while his sister counted the lamps still burning. As each message keeper’s thread fell away, they stayed alive, their memories intact. A few of them sat up, rubbing their eyes like sleepers waking after a very long night.

Outside, the sun was shining over the Grave March. After the darkness of the ossuary, it felt almost too hot, and Austin Veyron had to squint against the brightness.

A message came through Nahlia’s relay from Grand Meridian.

”The echo has made it to the signal tower at Lanternfall. It’s communicating with all the outposts.”

Then the message switched to black-and-white script.

ONE AUTHORITY. NO UNCERTAINTY.

Tessa rolled up the lamp map. ”It’s targeting the outpost’s decisions about water and wards.”

Nahlia added another message. Lanternfall Outpost had three water supplies, one damaged generator powering the wards, and an ongoing argument about rations.

The echo knew exactly what to target. The people there weren’t defeated yet. But if they had to make one hard decision, anyone who stepped up and sounded kind could seem like the only authority worth listening to.

Ceryn wrote what the outpost actually had beneath the messages. ”They’ll need the truth more than someone to save them.”

Austin Veyron stared east, toward where the old Lanternfall tower stood. From here, it was nothing more than a speck in the distance.

The echo no longer had the dead at its disposal.

So it was trying to get the living to beg for a single voice instead.
