The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The plague was only beginning.

The black flour map covered the basement pantry floor while Grand Meridian’s alliance gathered around it, studying the lines. Its branches ran from the city toward caravan roads, port warehouses, market cells, and distant supply depots, and every red dot marked a place where food could become fear.

The brightest source pulsed beyond the Bone Coast.

Marcus stood with his hands braced on the old pantry shelf. ”We cannot send fighters to every dot,” he said.

”No,” Elena said. ”But we can send the safeguards.”

She opened the transfer book and began listing them in the white ledger: visible food counts, shared ration roles, no private pantry access, witness review for sudden scarcity, voluntary support teams for anyone feeling the fever coming on.

Nahlia added a second column beside hers. ”We send the pattern, not the order,” she said. ”Each route decides how to apply it to local stores.”

Veyra looked at the map, unconvinced. ”That will be slower,” she said.

”It will also be harder for Vordessa to turn into another chain,” Marcus said.

Austin Veyron stood near the pantry wall, staring at the bright source in the distance. The dark trace beneath his wrist mark tingled every time the black mouth symbol pulsed, a small insistent rhythm he couldn’t ignore.

Nyra noticed it too.

”It is pulling you,” she said.

”It feels familiar.”

”Because it is using hunger logic like the Maw Core did?”

”More than that.” Austin Veyron looked at the black mouth for a long moment. ”It feels like it knows how I think.”

Sable’s grip tightened around the broken crown shard. ”Vordessa has seen you fight,” she said. ”She has seen what DEVOUR reaches for. She may be designing the network to tempt you into consuming it whole.”

”Then I do not,” Austin Veyron said.

Veyra gave him a look. ”You will not decide that alone,” she said.

”I know.”

He said it plainly, without argument, because there wasn’t one worth making. The mark on his wrist had already shown him how easily a single hungry system could talk him into believing he was the only safe hand left to hold it. He’d learned that lesson once already, in the Maw Core, and he had no intention of forgetting it just because the next pull felt more personal.

The basement door opened, and a relay runner came down with a wet coat and an exhausted face.

”Message from Hunger Reef,” she said. ”Daroa’s council is holding. Food lines are functioning. They found another red-marked crate on a patrol boat, but it was contained with the visible-count method.”

Marcus nodded. ”Good. Send them our updated record forms,” he said.

A second message followed from Ossuary Harbor. The Court Speaker had opened its altered harbor agreements to public review. Orena had chosen to keep a coast route watch. The Black Maw’s free settlements were still unstable, but the Regent’s old cords were being removed one by one, slowly and deliberately.

The alliance was learning to answer hunger without making a new master out of the effort.

The flour map moved.

One black line lifted from the floor and reached for Elena’s transfer book, thin as a hair but carrying a faint red shimmer along its length. Before anyone could react, it touched the book’s open page.

White route lines turned dark.

MOVE FOOD TO THE STRONGEST HAND, the pantry whisper said.

The lobby above them reacted instantly. Austin Veyron heard startled voices through the ceiling as route tokens began flashing false shortages one after another.

Elena slammed the transfer book shut. ”It is in the ledger,” she said.

Nahlia grabbed a ledger slip and began copying the last clean route state as fast as she could write. ”The fever is trying to use the common ledger’s coordination against it,” she said.

”It cannot,” Marcus said. ”Not if people see the change.”

He ran for the stairs, calling to the route volunteers above as he went. ”Open count! No hidden transfers! Read every change aloud!”

The basement black line thickened in response, and it turned toward Austin Veyron’s wrist mark.

DEVOUR surged.

The routing compulsion was small compared with the Maw Core, but it was clever in its own way. It didn’t tell people to take food outright. It told routes to favor whoever looked strongest, turning need into a contest before anyone even realized they were competing against their neighbors.

”Target,” Austin Veyron said. ”Strongest-hand routing compulsion. Not the ledger, not food routes, not the people using them.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

Nyra pressed the heart shard against the floor map, holding it steady. Blue-black light held the red line in place while Ceryn recorded the original pantry counts aloud and Nahlia fed clean route states back into the transfer book as fast as she could manage.

Austin Veyron put the white root chain over the black line and opened DEVOUR.

The compulsion tasted like a locked storehouse and a crowd watching the biggest person in the room, waiting to see who would move first.

MOVE FOOD TO THE STRONGEST HAND.

He consumed strongest, and nothing more.

The black line snapped.

Above, the lobby routes flared white again, steady this time.

Elena opened the transfer book carefully to check. The false shortage messages were gone entirely. In their place, volunteers had already written their own current roles: count keeper, meal runner, medic, water carrier, witness.

The fever had tried to hijack the city’s coordination.

The city had answered by making its coordination visible to everyone.

Marcus returned from the lobby with three route volunteers behind him, all of them moving with purpose. They had begun posting every store count on the Freehold’s outer walls and sending plain-language notices to the south-quarter kitchens. The notices didn’t promise abundance. They stated plainly what existed, what was moving, and who could ask for help.

”One old merchant tried to lock his warehouse,” Marcus said. ”His neighbors held a witness circle, counted the stock, and convinced him to reopen under a shared rota. No fight.”

Elena’s face softened with tired relief. ”That is how it spreads the other way,” she said.

Nahlia wrote the process into the ledger network as she spoke: visible count, shared access, no punishment for reporting hunger, route support by choice. Other towns could adapt it on their own without ever asking Grand Meridian for permission first.

For a moment, Austin Veyron felt something close to hope settle into his chest.

Then the bright black-mouth symbol on the flour map expanded.

Ceryn knelt beside it, studying the change closely. ”The source is not just a point,” they said. ”It is a trade exchange. Contracts go in. Hunger terms come out.”

Vessa unfolded the Kharos auction notice beside the map, and the silver letters reacted immediately to the black mouth.

”Black Mouth Exchange,” she said. ”A deep trade nexus beyond the Bone Coast. It is where the Maw settlements, court runners, and market brokers trade things too dangerous to name in public.”

”Vordessa is there?” Nahlia asked.

”Or heading there,” Vessa said. ”She needs a place that can distribute plague clauses through food, debt, and protection routes all at once.”

Nyra looked at the map’s red dots, tracing the pattern with her eyes. ”If she gets the Exchange fully active, the hunger fever can spread without a root in sight,” she said.

Marcus folded his arms. ”Then we need an expedition,” he said.

”We need the city stable first,” Elena said. ”The new safeguards must keep moving through the routes while the strike team is gone.”

Austin Veyron looked at the pantry shelves, the ledger, and the people who had held Grand Meridian together without a crown through several impossible threats already.

”We do both,” he said. ”The city shares the safeguards. The expedition goes to the Exchange. No one waits for us to save them before they act.”

Veyra nodded. ”Who goes?” she asked.

”Not another answer from me alone,” Austin Veyron said.

The group formed a planning circle around the hunger map, and each person named not only what they could do, but the limit of what they would not trade to do it. No one waited to be asked twice, and no one tried to claim a role that belonged to someone standing closer to the work.

Roles were offered, not assigned. Nyra chose attunement analysis. Ceryn chose record and treaty work. Vessa chose market access. Rin chose scouting. Veyra chose field defense. Sable chose crown-counterwork. Orena chose coast guidance. Marcus, Elena, and Nahlia chose the city network, staying behind where they were needed most.

Austin Veyron placed his hand near the black mouth symbol but didn’t touch it.

”Choice,” he said, and meant it as fully as he’d ever meant anything, a word he intended to keep saying for as long as the mark on his wrist kept offering him an easier one.

The map pulsed once, slow and final, the black mouth widening like something that had finally caught the scent it had been waiting for.

Far beyond the Bone Coast, the Black Mouth Exchange opened its gates, and whatever waited inside it had been listening for their arrival for longer than any of them yet understood.
