The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The day was about to begin.

Beneath the war-seat, the stairs led down into the oldest burial vault in the Grave March.

A chill rose from the depths below, and the smell of damp stone and decay followed them as they descended. Tracing the black-white trail the echo had left behind, they passed through rooms filled with demon skulls stacked from floor to ceiling. A route symbol was etched into each skull’s forehead. Some had worn down to thin, shallow lines. Others still glowed a faint red beneath the grime, as if they were still active. The sound of their footsteps echoed back from the stairs below, a half-beat late, so that it almost seemed another party was climbing up to meet them.

Daria stopped at the first landing and shone her lantern on the wall.

”These aren’t just tombs,” she said. ”When the old hunter orders were active, they logged where the demons fell down here. Each symbol represents a path.”

Tessa brushed the dust off one of the skulls and inspected the mark. ”So the echo wants the paths. Not more corpses.”

”It’s trying to call dawn with the war-seat residue, through these buried paths,” Nyra said. The heart shard tugged in her hand, pulling toward the darkness. ”If it can complete the order before dawn breaks, those cracked seals above won’t matter.”

Austin Veyron felt the mark on his wrist tug toward the darkness too, like something under his skin had been hooked.

A strange calm came with it. If he had control of a legion of the dead, it could do wonders against the echo. He could help protect Grand Meridian, and maybe Frostmarket and Glasswake too, all the places that had suffered from hunger. He could give the dead a more honorable purpose than the one they had died for. No more burned-down villages. No more hunters lying in the ashes with crossbow bolts in their backs. Just an army of the dead, waiting to defend the living.

It didn’t feel selfish to him, and that made it all the more dangerous. He knew what greed felt like. This felt noble.

Veyra sensed the change in him.

”Name it.”

”I want to control the legion of the dead.”

”And what would it make?”

”An army that only I can command.”

The shard of Sable’s crown lit up the skulls around them. ”Then you’re giving the echo exactly what it wants. The same army, just with you controlling it.”

She understood, because she had once worn a crown and felt the same way, believing the people beneath her were safer because she held them.

Calder walked up beside Austin Veyron, rubbing the mark on his own wrist. ”At the First Feast, they told us that as long as the best candidate was holding the hunger, it wouldn’t hurt anyone. This is just the war-seat saying the same thing about an army.”

They continued down the stairs.

When they entered the next room, they found corpse demons standing guard in niches along the walls. The sentries were dried out, with rotting burial cloth draped over their bodies and rusted armor hanging from their frames. A blue-white glow shone from their eyes, as if dawn had already come.

DAWN OBEYS THE GENERAL.

One of the sentries leaped at Daria.

Rin’s arrow struck its shoulder. The sentry turned toward her, but the arrow hadn’t pierced its armor. Orena hooked its foot with her spear and pulled it to the ground. Veyra sliced through the red path line running from its body into the floor, careful to keep the pressure off her bad shoulder.

More corpse sentries climbed out of the walls, grime and dirt falling from them as they emerged.

Daria’s hunters took position without anyone having to say a word. Some climbed up onto the ledge. Others guarded the map copies. The rest turned to face the stairs they had come down. Each of them picked a line, just as they had in the March above.

Austin Veyron saw what was commanding the sentries.

DAWN OBEYS THE GENERAL.

It was trying to make the sun wake the dead every dawn, using the buried general’s order.

”Target,” Austin Veyron said. ”The dawn-obeys-the-general clause. Not the sentries. Not the sun. Not the paths.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable said.

He placed the white root chain on top of the corpse sentry’s armor.

DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like a trumpet blown over a field that could not refuse to wake.

DAWN OBEYS THE GENERAL.

He consumed obeys.

The sentries stopped moving.

The blue-white glow faded from their eyes, and one by one they collapsed back into their niches. The sun would still rise as normal, but it would no longer answer to the commands of a dead general.

They made their way to the center of the vault.

An ancient demon general lay on a stone bed in the middle of the room. It was much larger than the body the echo had built above. Its armor had fused to its body, and a cracked legion seal rested on its chest. All around it, hunter scouts hung from nets made of roots, unconscious. Small roots had worked their way into their leather collars, and every few seconds the scouts inhaled together, as if they were connected to the general’s lungs.

Daria gasped. Austin Veyron watched her count them, her lips moving as she matched each face to a name.

The sovereign echo hovered over the demon general’s body.

”You came back,” it said. ”You keep destroying my forms because you are afraid of what I can do with a body.”

”We’re afraid of what you believe a body gives you,” Austin Veyron said.

”Direction.”

The word echoed through the walls, repeating itself over and over, until it sounded like the entire vault was speaking to them.

The echo placed its hand of black root light on the legion seal.

The scouts in the nets cried out as the roots tightened around them.

Tessa spread a route sheet beside the stone bed and scanned it quickly. ”The scouts are tied into the seal as witnesses. If we pull them out of the nets without changing the claim, the vault will absorb their lives into the general.”

Ceryn studied the symbols carved into the stone. ”There’s a grave-boundary release. It needs three people to name the bodies as buried, not enlisted.”

”I name them buried,” Daria said.

”I name them not candidates,” Calder said, joining her.

”I name them not a source,” Sable said, raising her crown shard.

The legion seal flickered.

The echo let out a screech and threw black paths toward the scouts.

Nyra raised the heart shard and wrapped its light around the nets of roots, keeping the dead from reaching the living. She strained to hold the light in place, and as the echo pushed back against her, her arms began to shake.

”I can keep them out,” she said through clenched teeth. ”For a while.”

”Do you choose it?” Austin Veyron asked.

”Yes.”

Veyra walked up to the stone bed and began slicing through the echo’s paths, careful not to cut the dead general’s bones. Rin and Orena untangled the scouts from the nets and handed them to Daria’s hunters.

Then Austin Veyron felt the legion seal’s order.

THE DEAD WAIT FOR THE ONE WHO WILL USE THEM.

It wasn’t a command. It was a trick, meant to make someone feel it was their duty to become the leader of the dead, and to feel they were doing wrong if they refused.

Austin Veyron’s hunger rose within him.

He could use the dead to protect the living. He could make the demons pay with their own corpses. He would be doing the right thing, giving the dead a use.

Veyra met his eyes across the stone bed.

”Smaller.”

Austin Veyron found the core word.

Use.

”Target,” he said. ”The use-the-dead claim. Not the buried bodies. Not the scouts. Not the seal’s boundary records.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable answered.

He placed the root chain on top of the legion seal.

DEVOUR opened. The claim tasted like a hand hovering over a battlefield after everyone else had fallen silent.

THE DEAD WAIT FOR THE ONE WHO WILL USE THEM.

He consumed use.

The legion seal split in half.

The stone bed rumbled, and the demon general’s body settled deeper into the ground, as if it were finally at rest. The roots around the remaining scouts loosened, and Daria pulled the last one out of the net just as the echo’s form ripped free of the general’s body.

It was smaller now, having lost most of its mass. Its edges blurred as if it were about to come apart, and it looked more panicked than ever before.

The wall behind it opened, revealing a narrow path lined with pale lamps.

THE LANTERN OSSUARY.

The echo escaped into the light.

The vault began to crumble.

”Dawn!” one of Daria’s hunters called out.

As they made their way up the stairs, sunlight shone down on them, and they emerged into the day.

The Grave March looked dull that morning. Fog covered the field, and where the sun hit the scattered armor, it gleamed gold.

No legion of the dead rose.

The freed scouts sat on the stone markers and blinked at the sunlight. Some were trembling, and one was laughing for no reason at all. Daria looked around at them, breathing heavily. ”The March is clear.”

At least for the time being.

”The Lantern Ossuary is lighting up undead paths,” Nyra said, looking at the map. ”It’s trying to send a trail toward a frontier settlement before we can warn them.”

Tessa pointed to the next location.

LANTERNFALL OUTPOST.

Austin Veyron stared down the dark stair toward the path where the echo had escaped.

Dawn had broken without an army of the dead.

But the echo had found another path to travel through.
