The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

They would have to shatter it without trapping everyone beneath the ice.

The inner doors slammed shut under the grate.

Austin Veyron jumped down and hit the slick white ice, the root chain already unrolled in his hands. Veyra hit the floor next to him. Rin came down the left side along a wall brace. Orena dropped close to the steam-pipe corridor, with Kaelith and Ceryn coming down behind her. They had climbed up through the hot-spring tunnels after the caravan made it to the fire pits and the shelter leaders were able to manage the ropes on their own. Tessa dropped with the pipe layout in her hand. Nyra came last with the heart shard, its blue-black glow standing out against the white and red cold.

The room was colder at floor level than it had looked from above. They could see their breath hanging in the air, and the ice was slick enough that they had to step carefully.

Queen Ysara turned away from the ice-heart to face them.

Six court witnesses stood inside the frozen circles with their hands on the oath ledgers. They were pale, and their lips had turned blue. Above them, the pale splinter hovered over a large heart-shaped block of ice. Beams of white light came down from the splinter into the oath circles, like threads tied to each of them.

”You have interrupted this ritual,” Ysara said. ”You have exposed the valley to the possibility of death. And now you come here to destroy what keeps the winter at bay.”

Kaelith stepped forward. ”You kept the winter at bay by putting everyone in debt to you for staying alive.”

Ysara’s clear crown sparkled. ”I brought food through the mountains when no one else did. I buried the shelters that froze because people would not follow the structure. You see debt. I see providing.”

”Providing without the option to choose is a chain,” Kaelith replied.

The two women stared at each other. Austin Veyron got the feeling they had been having this argument for years, just in different words and different places, long before he ever came north.

Ysara lifted her hand.

Guards came out from concealed doors along the walls.

Their armor was as clear as ice, just like the tunnel guards’, except these guards had a red-and-white oath line running straight from their armor to the ice-heart, pulsing with it like veins. They moved without fear or hesitation, as though something else were moving them.

Veyra met the first spear thrust. She deflected it and struck the guard’s shield arm, breaking the oath line without piercing the armor. The guard stumbled as if waking from sleep.

Rin’s arrow broke the ice beneath two more guards’ feet. Orena used their slippery footing to drive them back and away from the witnesses. Sable held the crown shard to the closest frost circle and revealed the words inside it in red.

WITNESS SERVES THE WINTER CROWN.

DEVOUR rose in Austin Veyron.

The ice-heart was close. There was so much power packed into that mass of routes: weather, survival debt, and the hunger of the pale splinter, all coiled together into something immense. He could devour it. He could swallow it whole and devour every last bit of winter in one stroke.

He would be swallowing the north’s hunger as well.

Veyra saw it on his face before he spoke.

”Name it.”

”I want the ice-heart.”

”What would that create?”

”A winter throne with no queen.”

”It would still be a throne,” Sable said calmly.

Nyra put her hand on the ice-heart’s frost layer. ”I can calm the splinter’s resonance. I won’t consume it.”

”Do you wish to do that?” Austin Veyron asked.

”Yes.”

Nyra closed her eyes.

A blue-black hue washed over the ice-heart. The splinter resisted, sending waves of cold through the floor and up Nyra’s arm until her sleeves began to frost over. She didn’t let the splinter consume her. She only kept the barrier between the splinter and the witnesses. She gasped for air and clenched her jaw so hard that Austin Veyron could see the muscle move under her skin. But she held on.

Tessa and Ceryn ran for the heat return valve behind the throne dais.

The valve room was sealed behind a lattice of red ice.

HEAT FOLLOWS THE CROWN.

Ceryn looked over the old pipe plan. ”If we shatter this without changing the claim, the heat will flood into the oath circles.”

”There’s a smaller return line.” Tessa pointed to the map. ”We consume the crown’s claim, then turn the valve.”

Austin Veyron fought his way across the room to reach them. He slid the last few feet over the slick ice and saw where they could target the lattice.

”Target,” Austin Veyron said. ”The heat-follows-the-crown clause. Not the heat. Not the valve. Not the witnesses.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said, deflecting another spear thrust.

”Witnessed,” Sable added.

Austin Veyron looped the root chain around the red ice.

DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like warmth locked away inside a palace.

HEAT FOLLOWS THE CROWN.

He consumed crown.

The ice lattice broke apart.

Ceryn turned the return valve.

Heat rushed through the pipes beneath the oath room. It wasn’t enough to thaw the stronghold, but it was enough to flow into the hot-spring line, giving the ice-heart an outlet to release its pressure without going through the witnesses.

The frost circles began to waver.

Ceryn ran back into the room and knelt before the closest witness, holding up a maintenance blade. ”The return valve is open. Would you like to be released from your circle?”

The woman glanced at the others. ”Cut Mara first. Her circle is heating up.”

Mara was a court clerk with a silver braid frozen to her shoulder. She nodded. ”Yes. I want to be released.”

Ceryn cut the first circle of frost.

With a long hiss, the steam drew the force of the oath away through the hot-spring pipes. Mara fell into Kaelith’s arms, coughing and gasping for air. Kaelith wrapped her arms around the woman and rubbed warmth back into her limbs, murmuring something to her that no one else could hear.

The other witnesses watched it happen.

One by one, they decided who would be released next. None of them were freed because Austin Veyron decided they should be. They decided who was most in need, and who could learn the valves and help the others back onto their feet. They were all choosing for themselves, even while they were still trapped under the Crown. Austin Veyron could feel what they were sacrificing and what they were gaining.

Ysara watched with a tear in her eye beneath her anger. She had decided these things for ten winters, and now others were giving those choices back to the people who deserved them.

”Asking them won’t make the cold any kinder,” she snarled. ”When a shelter is lost to the winter storms, who will they blame?”

”Maybe each other,” Kaelith said. ”They might blame you, or they might blame the winter. At least it will be their own decision.”

The queen charged at the ice-heart.

She placed both hands on its frost layer, and the pale splinter tried to attach itself to her crown.

”Then I will bear it,” Ysara said. ”I will become what they need.”

The ice-heart opened.

A blast of white light filled the room. The guards halted mid-step, and the remaining oath circles tightened around the witnesses. One of them screamed. The room shook as cracks spread through the clear ice walls. Outside, they could see the blizzard intensifying, as if the north itself were inhaling rage.

Austin Veyron could see the core claim beneath Ysara’s hands.

WINTER BELONGS TO THE ONE WHO ENDURES IT.

It was a strong claim. It offered all of a person’s struggles as justification for the crown, and it was trying to convince Austin Veyron to consume it. He had endured the Hunger Emperor, the Maw Core, the Caldera, and the whole journey to get here. The claim told him he deserved the power because he had endured it. A part of him wanted to believe that.

DEVOUR screamed.

”Target?” Veyra yelled over the storm of light.

Austin Veyron forced himself to speak.

”The winter-belongs-to-the-one-who-endures-it clause. Not the winter. Not Ysara. Not the ice-heart’s raw energy.”

”Witnessed,” Veyra said.

”Witnessed,” Sable added.

Austin Veyron walked into the blast of light.

The ice-heart tried to show him all the people dying outside the Crown. It showed him a hidden path to keeping everyone safe. If he consumed the winter and made every storm follow him, no one would ever have to worry about freezing again. It was such a convincing fantasy that it was hard to believe it wasn’t real.

His humanity grew thinner the longer he considered the idea.

Then Nyra’s voice broke through to him from the edge of the ice-heart.

”Don’t make me your justification.”

Kaelith’s voice came through as well.

”Don’t make us your burden.”

Austin Veyron found the core phrase.

WINTER BELONGS TO THE ONE WHO ENDURES IT.

DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted like frostbite worn as an honor.

He consumed belongs.

The ice-heart broke with a deafening crack.

The pale splinter ripped free from Ysara’s crown and flew upward. Nyra caught it in her blue-black resonance and held it away from herself and everyone else.

Outside, the blizzard began to die down.

The frost circles broke apart. Ceryn and Tessa helped the remaining witnesses out while the heat carried the rest of the oath pressure away through the hot springs.

Ysara dropped to her knees.

Her clear crown had a crack running through the middle, from her forehead to its peak. The cold gleam it had cast across the room was gone. She stared out through the clear ice wall at the valley, watching rope lines and food sleds travel between the shelter fires.

”They will die without me,” she muttered. She didn’t sound angry. She sounded scared, like someone who had held on to a fear for so long that she had never learned how to let it go.

The guards started to wake up, blinking behind their clear masks. As the oath lines disappeared from their armor, some of them lowered their weapons. Others simply sat down where they stood, too exhausted to move.

Kaelith stood over Ysara, weary and shaking. ”Then let them help each other.”

Ysara looked at the pale splinter floating in Nyra’s hands.

For a moment, Austin Veyron thought she might try to take it from her.

Instead, she slammed her hand onto the throne dais.

A hidden staircase opened behind her, leading up into the crown tower.

”The winter may weaken,” she said. ”But it will remember its debts.”

She climbed the stairs into the tower and was gone.

A bell began to ring above the stronghold.

It was deeper than any bell from the marketplace or any pulse from the Hunger Road. Austin Veyron could feel it vibrating through all the ice in the north. Even the freed witnesses flinched at the sound of it. Mara clutched her oath ledger as if it might drag her back under the Crown.

Ceryn looked down at the old oath ledgers, and their face went pale.

”That’s the Ice Crown Bell,” they said. ”It’s calling every debt the Crown has ever taken.”

Nyra slowly lowered her hands, keeping the splinter held in its blue-black aura. Veyra took her place beside Austin Veyron, sword drawn, her eyes on the staircase.

Outside, they could see the faint glow of the shelter fires in the distance.

The winter throne had cracked.

But the north was not done paying for it.
