Chapter 291: Chapter 286: Dragon Girls Near Academy

Location:Obsidian City

Date/Time:28 Ashbloom, 9939 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm

The pull had teeth.

Yinglong felt it the moment they crested the ridge east of the trade road — a warmth that settled into the quintet bond like sunlight through water, diffuse and directionless and absolutely, unmistakably real. Silver queen essence. Not the faint directional tug that had guided them southeast across three weeks of frontier wilderness. This was presence. Close. Breathing-distance close, if she’d been in her true form and the sky had been open and the world had been shaped the way it was supposed to be shaped.

But she wasn’t. And it wasn’t. And the source — that maddening, beautiful warmth — had no location.

She stopped on the ridge. Below, Obsidian City spread across the valley floor like a wound that had scarred into something functional. Smoke and stone and the distant noise of sixty thousand humans living on top of each other. And beyond the city, rising from the mountain’s eastern face like a fist thrust into the sky, the Academy. Black stone terraces carved in massive three-quarter arcs, tier after tier climbing toward a peak that vanished into low cloud.

The warmth intensified. Not from the city. Not from the Academy specifically. From the space between — from everywhere and nowhere, as if the queen’s essence had been poured into the air itself and then the container had been removed.

”She’s here.”

Beside her, Xingteng stood with her arms wrapped around herself — not from cold. From the particular tension of someone whose body remembered things her mind had decided not to discuss. Her haunted dark grey eyes were fixed on the Academy, and the expression on her face was the one Yinglong had learned to read in the three years since everything changed: hope held at arm’s length, because holding it closer meant it could be taken.

”Close isn’t found,” Xingteng said.

***

Obsidian City smelled of coal smoke, unwashed bodies, cheap essence-infused lamp oil, and the stale sourness of too many cultivators cycling spiritual energy in too small a space. Yinglong had never been to the Lower Realm before last year. She’d grown up in the Dragon Realm’s obsidian spires — clean air, ancient stone, the ozone tang of dragon essence and the cold clarity of altitude. Even the Upper Realm, where their parents occasionally took them for diplomatic functions, had the sterile elegance of civilizations that had learned to hide their rot beneath lacquer.

This wasn’t that. This was rot and function existing in the same breath, and nobody seemed bothered by either.

The streets were packed. Not with purpose — with density. Humans moved in a constant shuffle of bodies and elbows and raised voices, bargaining and cursing and laughing with the aggressive familiarity of people who lived so close to each other they’d stopped pretending to have boundaries. A merchant argued with a customer over the price of formation-grade ink while a child ran between their legs carrying a stick that might have been a sword to someone with enough imagination. An old woman cultivated openly on a street corner — Ashborn, barely above ambient, cycling essence through a cracked core with the dogged persistence of someone who refused to stop trying.

Yinglong watched the old woman. In the Dragon Realm, a cultivator with a cracked core would have been treated, rehabilitated, and given resources. Here, she sat on a crate and cultivated in the dirt.

(This is where our queen is hiding. This is what she chose.)

The thought wasn’t judgment. It was confusion. Silver queens were born to rule — to sit at the apex of dragon civilization and hold the flights together through the sheer gravity of their existence. What kind of queen chose a Lower Realm city where the streets smelled of coal and the strongest cultivators barely qualified as interesting by dragon standards?

(Maybe the kind that had no choice.)

The mercenary quarter occupied the city’s western district — a sprawl of boarding houses, weapon shops, mission boards, and drinking halls that existed in the specific economy of people who sold violence for coin. The buildings were stone and timber, functional without ambition, and the streets between them were wide enough for carts but narrow enough for ambush. Yinglong catalogued the layout the way she catalogued any new territory: entry points, choke points, sight lines, exits.

Dragon instinct wrapped in a human body. The body was a costume. The instinct was real.

They moved through the quarter in the practiced rhythm of two women who’d been traveling together long enough to communicate in glances. Yinglong walked on the street side — between Xingteng and the crowd, always between Xingteng and the crowd, a habit she’d stopped noticing and Xingteng had stopped acknowledging. They wore practical road-worn clothing — leather bracers, belted tunics, boots that had seen better months. Two young mercenaries looking for work. Nothing unusual.

”That group in the corner.” Xingteng’s voice was barely above breath. She didn’t gesture, didn’t look. ”The tea house with the blue awning. Three men, one woman. They’ve been watching the road to the Academy.”

Yinglong let her gaze drift past the tea house. Casual. The group was unremarkable — mid-tier cultivators, mixed clothing, the studied anonymity of people trying not to be noticed. Sparkvein or Flamewrought, at a guess. Not threats. But positioned with the deliberate precision of a surveillance team.

”How do you know they’ve been there a while?”

”Their tea is cold, and they haven’t ordered more. The woman’s shifted her chair twice — same angle each time, tracking the road. And their essence signatures are suppressed.” A pause. ”Not well. But suppressed.”

Xingteng’s quintet role was Heart — the empath, the one who felt the world’s edges and textures the way others felt temperature. In her true form, she could read emotional states through essence fluctuation. In human form, the sensitivity translated to an awareness of people and spaces that bordered on prescience. She saw patterns the way Yinglong saw threats: automatically, comprehensively, without choosing to.

”Not merchants,” Yinglong said.

”Not students either. Wrong age, wrong posture. They’re watching the Academy, but they’re not interested in going inside.” The ghost of a smile — the first in days, fragile and brief and worth more than Yinglong could say. ”I’ve been watching them watch.”

Yinglong filed it. Surveillance teams watching the Academy meant someone else was interested in what was inside those walls. Useful information. Potentially dangerous information. But secondary — the queen came first.

The pull was everywhere in this city. A constant low warmth in the quintet bond, strongest when they faced the Academy, weakest when they turned away. But directionless. Whatever shielded the queen didn’t just hide her — it unmade the displacement entirely. No void, no distortion, no wall. The space where the queen existed simply read as empty. Yinglong had never encountered concealment this complete. Shadow dragons were masters of hiding — it was their heritage, their art, the thing they did better than any other flight. And this was beyond them.

”It’s stronger here than the frontier,” Xingteng said. Quiet. ”Stronger than the cave.”

”I know.”

”And still nothing to trace.”

”I know.”

They stood in the mercenary quarter of a human city they’d never seen, feeling their queen’s presence in their bones, and couldn’t find her. The irony was the kind that didn’t have a punchline.

***

The mercenary hall was a squat stone building with a mission board that covered an entire wall and a registration desk staffed by a woman whose expression suggested she’d processed ten thousand young cultivators with delusions of competence and expected ten thousand more before she died.

”Names.”

”Ying.” Yinglong kept it short. Human names. Unremarkable. ”My sister, Teng.”

The registrar didn’t look up. ”Cultivation assessment.”

They’d prepared for this. Yinglong released a careful thread of essence — Flamewrought, middle stage. The barest fraction of her actual power, shaped and constrained and wrapped in the unremarkable texture of a talented but average young cultivator. Shadow dragons could mask their cultivation level the way they masked everything else: completely, instinctively, with the ancient precision of a species that had survived ten thousand years by being impossible to find.

”Flamewrought. Both of you?” The registrar made a note. ”Affinities?”

”Voidshadow and Galebreath.” Yinglong. Truthful — those were her primary affinities. Just not the full list.

”Voidshadow and Terracore.” Xingteng. Also truthful. Also incomplete.

The registrar wrote it down with the enthusiasm of someone who’d rather be doing anything else. ”Combat specialisation?”

”Close-quarters paired fighting.” Yinglong’s hand rested on the short sword at her hip — a serviceable weapon, nothing special, chosen specifically because it was nothing special. Her real weapon was her body, her essence, and the forty-meter wingspan she couldn’t use in public. ”We work as a team.”

”Fine. Mission tiers available at your level: beast patrols — perimeter and interior. Escort jobs — merchant caravans, resource transports. Gathering — herb collection, essence node surveys.” The registrar pushed two jade identification tokens across the desk. Green-banded. Entry level. ”Payment on completion. Don’t die on a mission — the paperwork is tedious.”

They took the tokens. Two more young women looking for work in a city full of young cultivators looking for work. The registrar had already forgotten them.

That was the point.

They took beast patrol for the first rotation — perimeter sweeps along the Academy’s outer boundary, the kind of work that kept them close to the pull and gave them legitimate reason to study the mountain’s approaches. The first sweep took them along the eastern ridge trail where the Academy’s lower terraces met the treeline. Yinglong mapped the terrain with the unconscious thoroughness of a guardian assessing a perimeter: approach angles, defensive positions, the formation arrays embedded in the mountain’s stone that hummed with enough spiritual energy to make her teeth ache.

The humans had built something here. Something that went deeper than architecture. The mountain itself had been carved and shaped and saturated with essence work that was — she had to admit — impressive by any standard. Not dragon-grade. But older than anything she’d expected from a Lower Realm institution. Some of the formation patterns in the lower walls predated the cultivation styles she’d been taught to recognise.

The pull screamed at her from inside the mountain. Or behind it. Or through it. Somewhere that existed in the same space as the Academy, but couldn’t be reached from any angle she could find.

Xingteng chose a solo gathering contract alongside the patrol — herb collection in the forest east of the city, outside the walls, away from the crowds. She worked better alone in open spaces. Always had. More so now.

Yinglong didn’t argue. She’d learned — in the three years since Xingteng had told her, since the blood-oath had sealed her silence like a brand behind her sternum — that protecting her sister didn’t mean standing in front of her. Sometimes it meant standing far enough away that Xingteng could remember how to breathe without someone else’s shadow over hers.

Their lodging was a boarding house on the quarter’s east edge — second floor, shared room, one window facing the Academy. Xingteng checked the door lock. The window latch. The distance from the bed to the exit. The angle from the window to the street below.

She did it the way she did everything now: methodically, without expression, as though the assessment was happening to someone else and she was merely observing.

Yinglong watched. Pretended not to.

***

Night changed the pull.

The queen’s presence — diffuse and directionless during the day — settled when the city quieted. Not clearer. Not traceable. But warmer. As if whatever shielded her relaxed its grip by a fraction when the world slept, and the silver essence that leaked through carried the particular quality of safety. Of someone sheltered. Cared for.

Xingteng sat by the window. Her dark grey eyes reflected the distant lantern-light of the Academy’s upper terraces — tiny points of gold against the mountain’s black face, like stars that had gotten lost and settled too low. The pull hummed in the bond between them, and for once, she wasn’t holding it at arm’s length. She was letting it in.

”What if she’s like Xueteng?”

The name dropped into the room like a stone into still water. Xueteng — the last silver queen. Enslaved at fifty. Forced to create queens for a millennium until she chose to destroy herself rather than be used again. The story every shadow dragon grew up with. The wound that hadn’t healed in ten thousand years.

”What if she’s already suffering?” Xingteng’s voice was steady. Too steady — the measured control of someone who’d learned to speak around the shape of things that hurt. ”What if whoever’s hiding her isn’t protecting her? What if the concealment isn’t a shield — it’s a cage?”

Yinglong sat on the bed. Her amber eyes found her sister’s profile against the window — the sharp jaw, the dark hair falling forward, the tension in the line of her neck that never fully released. Xingteng was twenty-three hundred years old. She’d been brilliant and gentle and fearless once, and then Heihuo had taken the fearless part and left everything else intact, which was worse.

”Then we’re already too late for gentle.” Yinglong’s voice was low. Not hard — certain. The certainty of someone who’d made a decision so deeply it had become architecture. ”But we’re not too late to fight.”

Xingteng’s hand went to her shoulder. The right one. Where Heihuo had grabbed her. The gesture was unconscious — a thing her body did when the world pressed too close, a map drawn on skin that her mind had stopped reading but her fingers still traced. She didn’t notice.

Yinglong always noticed.

She crossed the room. Covered Xingteng’s hand with her own. Said nothing. There was nothing to say that they hadn’t already said in the three years since a bathroom floor and a blood-oath and the silence that had followed. The oath burned sometimes — a heat behind her sternum, the price of keeping a secret that someone else should be carrying. Their parents didn’t know. Xinglong didn’t know. The quintet didn’t know. Only Yinglong, because Xingteng had asked, and Yinglong would cut out her own tongue before she broke a promise to her sister.

”We’ll find her.” Yinglong. Quiet. Absolute. ”And then nobody touches her. Nobody touches either of you. Not again.”

Xingteng didn’t respond. But her hand, beneath Yinglong’s, stopped pressing the old bruise. And after a while, her breathing changed — not sleep, but the closest thing to peace she managed these days. The guard lowering by a fraction. The window still open. The exits still mapped. But the tension in her jaw easing just enough to suggest that being here, in this room, near this warmth, was not the worst place in the world.

The pull hummed. Silver warmth at the edges of their bond. Their queen — somewhere behind walls they couldn’t breach, shielded by something they couldn’t name, alive in ways they could feel but not confirm.

Close. Not found. But they weren’t leaving.
