Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 258: Chapter 253: The Rankings

Location: Obsidian Academy

Date/Time: 10 Emberrise, 9939

AZI Realm: Lower Realm

The portal spat them out like something it didn’t want to swallow.

Students stumbled through the shimmering barrier in waves — exhausted, bloodied, triumphant, broken. Some walked upright. Some were carried. One boy crawled through on hands and knees, clutching a single jade slip to his chest like it was keeping his heart beating. The barrier rippled behind each body, admitting the next with the indifference of a machine processing inventory.

Jayde stepped through cleanly. No stumble, no dramatic entrance. Just a girl in torn robes with a white kitten on her shoulder and a pack that clinked faintly with beast cores.

Eden walked beside her. Dark brown hair half-pulled from its tie, blue eyes sharp despite the bruises still healing along her jaw. Her left arm moved freely — the fracture she’d set herself eight days ago already knit, which was, frankly, impossible for someone at Mid Flamewrought.

Accelerated healing consistent with — no. File it.

(Filed. Again.)

The Academy’s intake courtyard spread before them — a vast natural amphitheatre carved into the mountain’s lower face, ringed by ascending tiers of stone that climbed toward the peak like vertebrae in a spine. Thousands of students were already here, milling in clusters, sitting on stone benches, sprawled on the ground. The air tasted of copper and crushed herbs and the particular sharpness that came from too many essence signatures compressed into too small a space.

On Jayde’s shoulder, Takara’s ears swivelled. Tracking.

Two hundred thousand people in an enclosed mountain amphitheatre. Four primary exits — north gate, south stairs, east passage, west terrace. Two secondary: maintenance tunnels at the base of the Trial Tower, and a service corridor behind the Merit Hall. Chokepoint at each tier transition — narrow stairways, easily blocked.

She filed it. All of it. The Federation voice catalogued defensible positions while the rest of her watched students limp past with hollow eyes.

The last wave came through. The barrier flashed once — white, blinding — and collapsed.

Fourteen days. Done.

***

The collection stations were efficient. Jayde had to give them that.

Hundreds of stone basins lined every wall of the amphitheatre — waist-high, carved from the same dark rock as the mountain, each one embedded with formation arrays that pulsed faintly with blue-white light. Students approached in streams rather than queues, dumping their hauls into the basins and pressing their intake tokens against the verification crystal set into the rim. The formations did the rest — beast cores weighed and graded in seconds, jade slips counted and authenticated, herbs sorted by type and value with a speed that no human hands could match. Each basin processed a student in under thirty seconds, the formation crystal flashing once to confirm the tally before resetting for the next.

Efficient. Pre-Sundering formation work, if the energy signature is anything to go by. The Academy built these when two hundred thousand intakes was the norm, not the exception.

Jayde and Eden found a quiet corner first.

”We need to sort,” Jayde said. She upended her pack.

The full haul spread across the stone between them. Two weeks of collecting — and it was considerably more than a frontier orphan with an Entry Inferno-tempered registration should have accumulated. Takara’s sixteen beast cores from the deep zone alone would raise questions, especially the massive one — dense, heavy, pulsing with residual Blazecrowned essence that no Entry-tier student could have fought and survived. Jayde’s own twelve cores from the first days. The additional cores from six days of partnership hunting. Eighteen jade slips between them. Eden’s herbs — sorted, labelled, graded with a precision that the functionaries would notice and file under unusual.

Too much. The wrong kind of too much.

Triage. Submit only what matches the cover. Entry Inferno-tempered, Torrent affinity, eight jade slips and a handful of common-grade cores. Everything else disappears.

(The big cores — Takara’s kills. We can’t hand those over.)

Correct. A Peak Blazecrowned core from the deep zone would trigger an investigation. The medium-grade ones can blend in if we limit volume.

Eden watched her sort without comment. She’d understood the principle immediately — of course she had, because village healers didn’t understand operational security, and that was another thing to file — and was already separating her herbs into two piles. Sellable at registered tier. Too valuable to explain.

Jayde kept eight cores. Common to mid-grade, nothing that screamed I killed something three tiers above my registration. Eight jade slips — her share. The rest she split into Eden’s pile: six jade slips, ten cores that matched a Mid Flamewrought healer’s plausible self-defence kills. Eden’s herbs filled two trays on their own, even after the suspicious ones had been removed.

The remainder — Takara’s deep zone cores, the too-large kills, the jade slips that pushed the numbers past plausible — went into the bottom of Jayde’s pack, wrapped in cloth, tucked beneath the ration pouches. She’d find a use for them later. Resources were resources, and a black market existed everywhere institutions charged merit for breathing.

Takara watched from her shoulder. His purring had a quality of professional approval.

They approached a basin near the eastern wall. Jayde emptied her submission into the stone depression and pressed her intake token against the crystal. The formation hummed — a brief, clinical pulse — and the contents vanished into the array’s sorting matrix. One flash. Done.

Eden went next. The crystal pulsed twice on her herbs — running the identification sequence longer than usual. Jayde watched a functionary at the nearest monitoring station glance over, note the herb grades on his formation slate, and look at Eden with the particular expression of someone recalculating assumptions.

Eden didn’t look back.

They found their spot along the eastern wall. Backs to stone. And waited.

The processing took the better part of two hours. Two hundred thousand students flowing through hundreds of stations, the basins pulsing in steady rhythm like a heartbeat measured in merit. The amphitheatre hummed with it — the low thrum of formation arrays tallying the sum of two hundred thousand gambles.

Then the crystal display ignited.

It dominated the north wall — a massive formation array, thirty metres wide and ten tall, embedded in the living rock. When it activated, the surface blazed with cold blue light, and two hundred thousand names appeared in columns so dense they looked like scripture.

The silence lasted exactly two seconds.

Then the noise hit.

Names scrolled in ranked order from top to bottom. First through twentieth at the very top, glowing brighter than the rest. Twenty-first through two hundredth below that. Two hundred and first through two thousandth. And on, and on, diminishing in brightness as the numbers climbed, until the bottom hundred and eighty thousand were barely visible — grey text on grey stone.

The rejected.

She found the top first.

1st — Ryo Ashenveil.

The name meant nothing to her. She scanned the amphitheatre and found him by process of elimination — he’d be the one not reacting. There. Against the far wall, arms crossed, watching the display with the studied calm of someone who’d expected to be exactly where he was. Lean, compact, bronze-skinned, black hair with an auburn undertone that caught the formation light like banked coals. Tawny amber eyes tracking the crowd with the unconscious precision of someone who’d been taught to watch before he’d been taught to talk.

Military posture. No — trained posture. Noble, not military. Watches exits. Stands with back to stone. Right hand loose, ready to move.

(Huh.)

2nd — Kiran Duskborne.

Him she’d noticed in the realm. Hard not to — he fought like the environment owed him a debt, pulling Verdant and Torrent essence from streams and roots with a creativity that bordered on desperate. Tall, wiry, olive-gold skin that marked him as something people had opinions about. Dark hair falling past his jaw, thick enough to hide the ears that Jayde had glimpsed once when the wind shifted wrong. Slightly pointed. He’d caught her looking and his jaw had locked so hard she’d heard his teeth click.

She’d looked away. Not her business.

He was in the courtyard now, shoulders hunched, arms crossed, taking up less space than his frame allowed. Scowling at the display like it had insulted his mother.

Then: 199th — Jayde Ashford.

Exactly where she’d put herself.

Eight beast cores. Eight jade slips. A fraction of the real haul, calibrated to land inside the Elite cutoff without drawing a second glance. The deep zone cores sat in the bottom of her pack, wrapped in cloth, waiting for a use that wouldn’t blow her cover.

(We could have been first.)

We could have been dead. Ranking first paints a target. Ranking one hundred and ninety-ninth puts us inside the line that matters and invisible to everyone looking at the top.

The line that mattered was two hundredth. Top ten percent. Elite.

200th — Eden.

Last spot.

Eden’s face didn’t change. She looked at the display, found her name, and nodded once — a precise, economical acknowledgment, the same way she’d acknowledged finding a useful herb or setting a bone correctly. Satisfaction without celebration. The reaction of someone who’d calculated the outcome and confirmed it.

That’s not how a village girl reacts to—

(File it.)

Filed.

”Elite,” Eden said. The word was careful. Measured.

”Elite,” Jayde agreed.

Between them, Takara purred.

***

The robes came next.

Academy staff — stone-faced functionaries in grey administrative robes — moved through the courtyard with wooden crates stacked on floating formation platforms. Black robes in the first crate. Red in the second. Grey in the third. Each stack wrapped in paper bands stamped with the Academy seal.

Names were called. Students stepped forward.

When Jayde’s name was called, she accepted the folded black fabric without ceremony. It was heavier than she’d expected — dense weave, spirit-thread reinforcement in the seams, the Academy’s obsidian crest embroidered at the left breast. Grade 1 markings on the cuffs. The cloth smelled faintly of cedar and something metallic. Old storage.

She held it and felt nothing in particular.

(It’s just a robe.)

It’s access. Private courtyard. Cultivation array. A place where we can enter the Pavilion unseen, train at night, and maintain cover. It’s survival.

(Still just a robe.)

Eden took hers with the same economy. Folded it over her arm. Blue eyes already scanning the crowd — cataloguing, assessing, filing information with a speed that no village healer had any right to possess.

Around them, the courtyard churned. Students pulled on black robes with trembling hands, laughing, weeping, clutching the fabric like armour. Red robes went to students whose faces showed something more complicated — relief tinged with awareness of what they’d missed. The Elite cutoff. So close.

And the grey.

Grey robes for the twelve thousand who’d made the top twenty thousand but ranked below the top eight. They took the fabric with expressions ranging from grateful to grim. Bottom sixty percent. Communal dormitories, shared cultivation spaces, no stipend. Every merit earned from scratch.

But they were in. That was something.

The ones who weren’t in didn’t get robes at all.

The sound hit differently after the grey robes ran out. The formation display still glowed, and in the lower reaches of that cold blue light, a hundred and eighty thousand names sat in text barely bright enough to read. The students who bore those names stood in clusters throughout the courtyard — some still, some pacing, some arguing with functionaries who listened with the patient blankness of people who’d heard it all before.

A hundred and eighty thousand students who hadn’t ranked high enough. Their hauls had still been tallied — beast cores, herbs, jade slips all credited against the hundred and fifty merit debt. Some would owe almost nothing. Others, the ones who’d spent fourteen days hiding instead of hunting, would work off the full amount in fields and mines.

Fields. Mines. Two to three months of work under Obsidian’s jurisdiction, earning one merit per two hours until the debt cleared. Not slavery — defined, finite, transparent. They’d been told the rules before enrolling. Every one of them.

That didn’t make the sound any easier to hear. The low murmur of people realising that the gamble hadn’t paid off, that the next three months would be spent in dirt rather than classrooms. A boy near the south gate sat down heavily, staring at nothing. A girl walked in slow circles, mouthing numbers to herself.

(That could have been us.)

No, it couldn’t.

(I know. But it could have been someone like us.)

Jayde looked away.

***

”You went deep.”

Jayde turned. The voice belonged to the boy from the top of the list. Ryo Ashenveil. Up close, the noble breeding was unmistakable — clean-lined face, sharp jaw, aristocratic cheekbones he couldn’t hide no matter how plain his robes. His black Elite robes were already on, neat, pressed flat by habit. No embellishment. No visible jewelry. Boots polished.

His tawny amber eyes were steady. Assessing. Not hostile — measuring.

”Sorry?” Jayde said.

”In the realm. You went into the deep zone.” He said it the way someone stated weather. Fact, not accusation. ”Day six. You were gone for two days. Came back different.”

He was tracking us.

(He was tracking everyone. That’s what first place does.)

”I got lost,” Jayde said.

”Sure.” A ghost of something that might have been amusement if it had committed to the expression. He didn’t push. Just nodded — the kind of nod that said I see you holding back, and I’m noting it, and that’s all.

Beside him, Kiran Duskborne stood with arms folded and shoulders up around his ears. Figuratively. His dark hair hid the literal ears well enough. Sea-green eyes — vivid, startling against warm skin — flicked between Jayde and Eden with the wary attention of someone cataloguing escape routes.

”You’re the one who fought those four,” he said to Jayde. Blunt. Not impressed — acknowledging. ”Near the river basin. Day eight.”

”You saw that?”

”I was in the canopy. Collecting.” His jaw tightened. ”They were Meiling’s. The tall one bragged about it earlier.”

Eden’s expression didn’t change. But something moved behind her blue eyes — a flicker of the cold, clinical fury that Jayde had filed and not examined.

”They won’t be bragging now,” Eden said quietly. ”They extracted. Lost everything.”

Kiran’s mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. ”Good.”

A pause. Four students in black robes, standing in the wreckage of a two-hundred-thousand-person competition, sizing each other up with the careful assessment of people who understood that first impressions were tactical decisions.

Ryo broke it. ”Rest of today and tomorrow off. Classes start on the twelfth.” He looked at Jayde. Then at Eden. Then at Kiran, who bristled reflexively before catching himself. ”Elite dormitories are top tier. East wing has the best cultivation arrays.”

”Is that advice?” Kiran said.

”It’s information.” Ryo’s voice didn’t change. Mild. Even. The economy of someone who treated words like ammunition — spent carefully, never wasted. ”What you do with it is yours.”

He walked away. Unhurried. No wasted motion. The crowd parted around him without being asked, the unconscious deference that talent and calm authority pulled from people who recognised both.

Kiran watched him go. The furrow between his brows deepened. Then he looked at Jayde and Eden, and something in his expression shifted — not softer, but less guarded. The recognition of people who also didn’t quite fit.

”See you around,” he said. It sounded like a threat. It wasn’t.

He left. Long strides, hunched shoulders, hair falling over ears, he didn’t want the world to see.

On Jayde’s shoulder, Takara’s purring had acquired a quality of considered evaluation. She scratched behind his ears — the blue-tipped ones, soft as silk — and felt the vibration change pitch.

(You’re assessing them too, aren’t you?)

The kitten yawned and closed his eyes. Performance. She knew it now. The yawn was as deliberate as Ryo’s nod and Kiran’s scowl. Everything was information, and everyone was pretending.

***

She saw Meiling twenty minutes later.

Not at the distribution platform. At the crystal display.

The crowd had thinned around the north wall — most students had already found their names, absorbed the verdict, moved on to collect robes or process grief. But Meiling stood motionless in front of the glowing columns, close enough that the blue-white light carved shadows under her cheekbones. Her gold silk robes — cleaned, repaired, the hem re-stitched where road dust had frayed it, still the same set, still the only ones she had — caught the formation light and threw it back in muted amber.

Feng stood three paces behind her. Thin, anxious, blistered hands tucked into his sleeves. His eyes were fixed on Meiling’s back with the focused attention of a man whose employment depended on anticipating disaster.

Jayde watched Meiling’s gaze track the display. She wasn’t looking at the top — didn’t care about first place, wouldn’t waste attention on someone else’s victory. She was looking at the line. The two hundredth name. The cutoff.

Then her eyes moved one position down.

201st — Meiling.

She didn’t flinch. Didn’t gasp. Didn’t do any of the things that two hundred thousand students around her were doing. She stood perfectly still, and her chin lifted one degree — not defiance, not yet, something colder. An adjustment. The recalibration of someone whose plans had just been redrawn.

Then her gaze moved up. Slowly. Deliberately. Two names.

200th — Eden.

199th — Jayde Ashford.

Meiling’s jaw tightened. Barely visible — a fractional shift in the muscle beneath porcelain skin. But Jayde had sixty years of reading faces in people who wanted to kill her, and she saw it clearly: recognition. The village healer whose cultivation channels her minions had been ordered to destroy. The frontier nobody who’d humiliated her at the stream and looked through her essence pressure like it was weather. Both of them were sitting inside the line she’d spent every resource she had trying to cross.

One spot. One.

Meiling turned from the display and walked toward the distribution platform. The calculated grace of her stride hadn’t changed — if anything, it had sharpened, each step placed with the precision of someone who refused to let her body betray what her mind was processing.

She reached the platform. Stopped. Extended one hand.

The functionary placed red fabric in it.

Red.

Core tier. Rank two hundred and first. One name below the line that separated black from red, Elite from Core. The difference between a private courtyard with a cultivation array and a shared dormitory with three strangers. The difference between being invisible and being marked — because red robes on a former Temple noble were a brand. Every day. Every corridor. Every lecture hall. Core. Not good enough. Almost, but not.

The difference between being Meiling’s quarry and being her peer.

Meiling’s fingers closed around the red robe. Her face was porcelain. Perfect. A mask so thoroughly applied that it had become the face itself — the kind of composure that cost everything to maintain and showed nothing of the cost.

But her knuckles were white.

She’d used every advantage she had. Mid Realm pills from her space ring traded for jade slips — resources most students couldn’t dream of matching. Cultivation a full tier above the frontier trash she was competing against. Temple training. Noble discipline. And she’d still fallen one position short. Not because she lacked talent or resources. Because a frontier orphan and a village healer — two nobodies from nowhere — had taken the last two spots.

That was worse than losing. That was being replaced.

Jayde watched her cross the courtyard. Red robe folded over her arm — she hadn’t put it on, wasn’t going to, not here, not in front of two hundred thousand witnesses. She’d put it on later, in private, where the humiliation could be processed without an audience.

Her minions from the realm were gone. All four had crushed their extraction talismans — emergency exit, total forfeiture. Zero haul. Zero ranking. They’d be somewhere in the hundred and eighty thousand, working off debt in fields or mines for the next two months. Meiling had lost every tool she’d brought into the Secret Realm, and her expression showed exactly nothing about that fact.

Feng hurried to keep pace.

The Academy’s Challenge System. Jayde had found references in the intake documentation — dry, administrative language that laid out the rules with the impersonal efficiency of a regulation designed to encourage violence. After one year, students in lower tiers could challenge students in higher tiers for their positions. Same grade. Arena combat. Witnessed, recorded, and binding.

One year of protection. Then the bottom-ranked Elite students became the obvious targets.

Rank one hundred and ninety-nine. Rank two hundred. The last two in.

The first two Meiling would come for.

As she passed Jayde’s position, Meiling’s stride didn’t falter. Her hazel eyes found Jayde’s brown ones across twelve metres of courtyard stone — and the connection held. Not the hot, impulsive fury of the stream. Not the refined hatred of the Headmaster’s courtyard. Something new. Patient. Architectural. The look of someone who wasn’t angry anymore — who had moved past anger into something more useful.

Then her gaze shifted. Past Jayde. To Eden.

Eden, who was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and her blue eyes steady and her chin at exactly the angle of someone who had been underestimated before and found it tactically convenient.

Meiling’s expression didn’t change. But something behind it rearranged — a recalculation so fast it was almost invisible. She’d sent four people to cripple Eden’s cultivation in the realm, and Eden had made Elite anyway. The village healer who’d wrapped Feng’s blisters. The nobody who’d taken her last spot.

The hazel eyes moved back to Jayde. Then forward. She walked on.

No words. No essence flare. Nothing so crude.

Just a promise.

Threat assessment: significant. Not immediate — the one-year bye provides a buffer. But she has resources, connections, and the kind of motivation that doesn’t burn out. She orchestrated a four-person team to destroy Eden’s channels. She lost four minions and didn’t blink. She’s patient enough to wait a year and ruthless enough to use every day of it.

(She’s hurt.)

That makes her more dangerous, not less.

(I know.)

Meiling disappeared into the crowd. The gold silk of her Temple robes caught the last of the afternoon light, bright against the grey stone, a banner for a kingdom that had already exiled her.

”She looked at both of us,” Eden said quietly. She’d noticed. Of course, she’d noticed — village healers didn’t track threat vectors with that kind of precision, and that was yet another thing to file. ”Not just you. Both.”

”She sent people to cripple you,” Jayde said. ”You took her spot.”

”Our spot,” Eden corrected. Her mouth compressed. Not a smile. Something sharper. ”She’ll come for both of us. Not now — she’s smart enough to wait. But when the protection period ends...”

”Three hundred and sixty-five days,” Jayde said.

”I intend to use every one of them.”

On Jayde’s shoulder, Takara’s ears were forward. Alert. The purring had stopped.

Good. At least they were all paying attention.

Jayde looked up. The mountain rose above them in tiers — Normal at the base, wide and chaotic and loud. Core in the middle, more refined. Elite at the top, where mist drifted between private courtyards and the spiritual energy was dense enough to taste.

Home. For the next five years, at least.

Strategic position: secured. Cover: intact. Threats: identified. Resources: sufficient. Allies: provisional. Timeline: three hundred and sixty-five days before the first challenge window opens.

(It’s just a school.)

It’s never just a school.

(No. I suppose it isn’t.)

She pulled on her black robe. The weight settled across her shoulders like something she’d been wearing her whole life. Eden did the same — precise, practical, the robes adjusted with the unconscious efficiency of someone accustomed to uniforms.

Neither of them commented on that.

Takara sneezed once, delicately, and went back to sleep on her shoulder. The pink ribbon on his left ear fluttered in the mountain wind. The blue ribbon on his right ear stayed perfectly still.

Somewhere below, in the fading light of the amphitheatre, a hundred and eighty thousand students began the long walk toward the fields and the mines and the slow arithmetic of debt.

Above them, two thousand walked upward.
