Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 251: Chapter 246: Trial by Fire

Location: Sword Pocket Dimension → Secret Realm (Deep Zone → Forest)

Date/Time: Outside time (Months 11-12)

Realm: Lower Realm — Obsidian Academy Territory

”Final assessment,” Kazren said. ”Seven waves. Progressive difficulty. No golden light between waves. No rest. No stopping.”

Jayde settled into first position. Vael’kir hummed in her hand — eager, bright, the runes flickering with anticipation that matched her own. A year. Twelve months of wind blades and fundamental cuts and footwork drills and named techniques and combination flows and the slow, grinding, magnificent work of becoming something she hadn’t been before.

”Rules?” she asked.

”Survive. Win. Do not embarrass me.”

”In that order?”

”In any order you wish. The third is non-negotiable.”

The first construct materialised. Then another. Then five more. A pack — fast, low, Flamewrought-level, spreading to flank her the way pack hunters did, cutting off angles, testing whether she’d freeze or fight.

She fought.

Ember Cut took the first. Clean diagonal, Inferno-channelled, the blade trailing red-gold light that caught the second construct mid-lunge. Footwork — not Federation grid-calculation, not White’s memorised positions, but the intent-driven movement Kazren had beaten into her over months of wind blade corrections. She was where she needed to be before she decided to be there. Crimson Arc swept through three at once, the wide cut clearing the space around her, and the last two came from behind and she felt them through Vael’kir’s awareness — the sword reading the air the way Kazren had taught the sword to teach her — and she spun, Thread Cut, two hair-thin lines of essence that dropped them before they reached striking distance.

Seven constructs. Twelve seconds.

”Acceptable,” Kazren said. ”Wave two.”

The armoured beast was bigger. Inferno-tempered equivalent, stone plates overlapping like scales, no obvious weak points. It moved with the deliberate weight of something that knew it couldn’t be hurt easily and didn’t care about speed because it didn’t need to.

She cared about speed. She needed it.

Falling Star from above — Vael’kir Step launching her higher than gravity should have allowed, the descending strike channelling everything into one point. The blade hit armour. Sparks. A crack, hairline thin. Not enough.

The beast swung. She rolled. Wind Reader caught the backswing, redirecting the force along her blade and away, using the beast’s own momentum to open its guard. Thread Cut — not at the body, at the crack. The hair-thin essence line found the fracture and widened it.

Three more exchanges. Each one precise. Each one targeting the spreading weakness in the stone plating. The beast was stronger. She was more specific.

The armour shattered. The beast fell.

”Competent. Wave three.”

Speed-type. Four of them. Fast enough that the air compressed before they arrived — which saved her, because Kazren’s wind blade training had turned compressed air into a language she could read. She felt them coming before she saw them. Wind Reader for the first. Vael’kir Step to dodge the second. The third caught her shoulder — a glancing blow that sent fire down her arm — and she converted the spin into Ember Cut, took it down mid-stride, then Thread Cut at range for the fourth as it tried to circle behind.

Blood on her sleeve. Shoulder screaming. She ignored it.

”Sloppy. Wave four.”

Ranged. Six constructs at a distance, hurling essence bolts like artillery. The arena became a kill zone — bolts crossing from multiple angles, creating overlapping fields of fire that the Federation voice recognised, and the student in her didn’t need the Federation voice to understand anymore because Kazren had taught the same thing with different words.

Thread Cut. Thread Cut. Thread Cut. Each one hair-thin, each one precise, closing the distance between volleys, using the constructs’ own firing rhythm as cover — move during reload, cut during aim, close the gap inch by inch until she was in range for Crimson Arc, and the last three went down in one sweeping strike.

”Better. Wave five.”

The adaptive construct.

She smiled. Vael’kir hummed.

It adapted. She adapted faster. Not the frustrated, grinding, two-week battle of months ago — this was conversation. The construct presented a problem. She answered. It changed the problem. She changed the answer. It escalated. She escalated.

Combination flow: Ember Cut into Falling Star into Vael’kir Step into Thread Cut, the chain ugly and functional and hers, the strategist’s sequencing that Kazren had called annoying and effective and never quite admitted was impressive.

The construct shattered. Thirty seconds.

”I note you are breathing hard,” Kazren observed.

”I note you are a sword.”

”Wave six.”

Everything at once. Multiple threats, multiple ranges, multiple types — the arena filled with constructs and the air filled with essence bolts and the ground filled with things trying to kill her, and this was not a technique anymore. This was Ember Storm.

She let it go. The rapid-fire sequence, cuts blurring together, Inferno and Torrent and Voidshadow all channelling through Vael’kir simultaneously, the runes cycling through colours as the sword screamed with the full spectrum of her affinities. The storm swept outward. Exhausting. Devastating. The kind of technique that made everything around her regret being there.

When it stopped, she was on one knee. Gasping. The arena was empty.

”Stand up. Wave seven.”

She stood.

The final construct materialised, and the arena went cold.

Massive. Twice the height of the largest she’d faced. Stone and essence fused into something that radiated power the way a bonfire radiated heat — dense, overwhelming, the signature of a Peak Blazecrowned combatant rendered in construct form. Far, far above her cultivation level.

Tactical assessment: enemy exceeds our capability by a factor of—

”I know.”

She raised Vael’kir. The sword hummed. Not eager now. Steady. The hum of a blade that understood what was coming and had decided it was worth doing anyway.

The beast charged.

She met it.

Not with power — she didn’t have enough. Not with technique alone — technique couldn’t bridge a gap this wide. With intent. The thing Kazren had spent two months helping her find and the rest of her life building without knowing it. Protection. The line drawn in the world. The truth so deep she didn’t need to decide it.

Nothing touches what’s mine.

Vael’kir screamed. Full resonance. The construct hit her like a mountain falling, and she took the blow on Wind Reader, and the force nearly broke her arms, and she held, redirected, converted the beast’s momentum into an opening—

It hit her again. She went down. Hit the stone floor hard enough to crack it. Tasted blood.

Got up.

It hit her a third time. Falling Star from above, which it swatted out of the air like brushing away an insect. She crashed into a wall. Something in her side cracked. The golden light didn’t come — Kazren had said no healing between waves, and apparently, the pocket dimension obeyed.

Got up.

(Get up.)

Getting up.

The beast charged. Final run. She planted her feet. Raised Vael’kir. The runes blazed — not cycling now, not flickering, burning with the steady light that meant the sword and the wielder and the intent were all one thing, unified, absolute.

The locked technique. The one that had been empty for months and filled in an instant when she found her truth.

She performed it. Not thinking. Not calculating. Just being — the girl who stood in gaps, who drew lines, who said mine and meant it with everything she was.

One strike. Everything she’d learned. Everything she’d survived. Every cut and form and flow and wind blade and story about mothers with kitchen blades and swordsmen on bridges — compressed into a single descending point where the sword and the intent and the girl all met.

The beast split. Top to bottom. Clean.

It fell in two halves. The stone dissolved. The arena rang with silence.

Jayde stood in the centre. Breathing hard. Blood on her face, her arms, her side. Ribs cracked. Left shoulder not moving right. Both knees shaking.

Standing.

***

”Adequate.”

She waited. Her body hurt in places she hadn’t known she had.

”For a beginner.”

The bond carried something that wasn’t assessment. Wasn’t critique. Wasn’t the professional evaluation of a forty-thousand-year-old sword spirit grading his student’s performance.

Pride. Buried so deep under forty millennia of composure that it barely registered. But there.

”I expect you to continue training until you have learned the other seven hundred and thirty-six techniques.”

She leaned on Vael’kir. The sword held her weight without complaint. ”Is that your way of saying we’re not done?”

”It is my way of saying you are incomplete. We have barely begun. Do not mistake surviving an assessment for mastery.”

(He’s not done with me.)

Obviously.

From the sword — not through the bond exactly, but through the warmth of the metal against her palm — something quiet. Presence. The specific warmth of someone who had waited in the dark for forty thousand years, and the person they’d waited for hadn’t disappointed them.

He would never say this. She knew it anyway.

The golden light rose. Now — after the assessment, after the trial — it came. Warm, thorough, impossibly kind. It moved through her body and found every crack, every bruise, every torn fibre and strained channel. The cracked ribs knit. The shoulder reset. The blood dissolved. The exhaustion remained — this wasn’t the kind of tired that healing fixed.

She stood straight. Whole. Aching with the specific weariness of someone who had given absolutely everything and found out it was enough.

***

The arena pulsed.

Different from before. Not a construct materialising, not a wave beginning — the symbols along the walls igniting in sequence, the same gold-white light that had carried her father’s voice a year ago. Or minutes ago. Or forty thousand years ago. Time meant strange things in a pocket dimension.

A second message.

Briefer. Less emotion. The voice of a man who’d said what his heart needed to say and now spoke from the part of him that planned and built and saw strands.

”If you are hearing this, you passed. I knew you would — but knowing and feeling are different things, and I felt it, even across the distance.”

A pause.

”I have left gifts for you. Across Doha. Hidden in places, the strands showed me you would find if you walked the right path. The sword is the first. There will be others. You will know them when you feel them — the same resonance, the same recognition. Mine and yours.”

”Find the pieces of your soul. Each one you gather will bring you closer to whole. Closer to what you need to be. The darkness does not wait. Neither should you.”

”Walk your path, daughter.”

The light faded. The symbols dimmed. And the pocket dimension began to dissolve — not violently, not collapsing, but gently. The arena’s edges softening. The training constructs losing definition. The vast space folding inward like a flower closing at dusk, returning to what it had been before it was needed.

The cavern reformed around her. The same cavern — the spiralling walls, the unknown script, the amber glow. But different now. A passage had opened in the far wall. Narrow, sloping upward. Leading out.

Jayde looked at Vael’kir. The runes glowed steady. The jewel watched. Kazren was quiet — not absent, not sleeping, just... allowing the moment. For once.

She walked toward the passage. Toward the surface. Toward everything that came next.

***

She emerged into the forest.

Same forest. Same trees. Same ambient essence hanging in the air like humidity. The crack in the deep zone rockface — the gap she’d squeezed through, the narrow passage that had swallowed her into the earth — was gone. Sealed. As if it had never existed. As if the mountain had opened its mouth to let her in and closed it behind her.

The light was identical. The same quality, the same angle, the same filtered green through the canopy overhead. No time had passed. An entire year of her life — the longest, hardest, most important year she’d ever lived — and the world hadn’t noticed.

But she had changed.

Her body moved differently. Not obviously — same height, same build, same face — but the way she carried herself had shifted. Her weight settled lower. Her awareness extended further. The forest spoke to her in ways it hadn’t before — air currents, essence density, the particular quality of silence that meant predators nearby versus the different silence that meant nothing nearby at all.

Vael’kir sat on her back, secured in the makeshift harness she’d improvised from her pack straps. The weight felt right. Like a limb she hadn’t known was missing.

Kazren, from the sword: ”The air here is stale. Where are we.”

”Training realm. Secret Realm run by the Academy. I have about nine days left before it closes.”

”Nine DAYS.” The bond carried the specific outrage of a teacher who had just invested a year in a student and was watching them waste the investment. ”I just spent twelve months training you, and you wish to waste nine days wandering through a forest.”

”I need to find someone.”

A pause. Assessment. The bond carried the sensation of Kazren deciding whether this was an acceptable reason for non-training activity.

”...Fine. But your footwork was sloppy in wave three. We will address this.”

(He’s already critiquing.)

He will never stop critiquing.

(I kind of like it.)

Do not tell him that.

She moved through the forest. Faster now. The way Kazren had taught her to move — not running, not walking, something between. Vael’kir Step adapted for travel, essence-efficient, covering ground without wasting energy.

And then she stopped.

The sword. On her back. Visible. A weapon that radiated ancient essence like a signal fire — anyone with cultivation above Sparkforged would feel it. Any instructor monitoring the realm would register it. Walking back to the Academy with Vael’kir strapped to her back was the equivalent of hanging a sign around her neck that read I found a divine weapon in the deep zone, please ask me about my secrets.

”Kazren. The sword — people will see it. Feel it. I can’t—”

”Stop.”

She stopped. Not just moving — thinking. The bond carried something that wasn’t irritation exactly. More like the particular patience of a teacher watching a student miss the obvious.

”You are thinking of Vael’kir as a normal sword. She is not. She is soul-bonded to you. The bond is not a leash connecting two separate things — it is a bridge between two parts of the same whole.”

”Meaning...”

”Meaning she can live where you live. In your soul space. Where your divine essence will nurture her far better than any sheath or rack or harness ever could.”

She blinked. ”Inside me?”

”Inside your soul. It is not a foreign concept. You already host a sanctuary bond, a shadowbeast bond, and a dragon contract in that space. Vael’kir simply... moves in.”

She reached for the soul space — the internal landscape where her bonds lived, where the Pavilion’s anchor hummed, where Reiko’s thread waited silent and unreachable but present, where the dragon contract pulsed with Yinxin’s distant warmth. It was crowded in there. It had been getting crowded for months.

”How?”

”Will it. She will come. She wants to come — a soul-bonded blade prefers the soul to the air. The air is cold. You are warm.”

Jayde closed her eyes. Reached for Vael’kir — not physically, through the bond. The sword responded instantly, the runes flaring once, and then the weight on her back vanished. Not dropped. Not removed. Absorbed. She felt it settle into her soul space the way Reiko’s bond had settled — naturally, inevitably, as though it had always been there and the past year of carrying it physically had been the anomaly.

Vael’kir hummed. Deeper now. Richer. The soul space wasn’t just housing the sword — it was feeding it. Her divine essence wrapping around the blade like sunlight around a seed.

(So now I’ve got a sanctuary, a shadowbeast, dragons, and a sword living in my soul.)

This defies every principle of essence mechanics I have ever studied. Also physics. Also common sense.

(It’s getting crowded in here.)

It is getting crowded in there.

”She is content,” Kazren said. ”As am I. Your soul is... adequate housing.”

”High praise.”

”It was not praise. It was an observation regarding structural integrity.”

She opened her eyes. No sword on her back. No weight. No visible weapon. Just a girl in battered training clothes walking through a forest — exactly what anyone looking for her would expect to see.

But she could feel Vael’kir. Warm. Present. A thought away from her hand.

She moved.

***

She found him near the base of the cliff.

A white kitten. Sitting on a pile of beast cores. Clean. Composed. Pink ribbon on his left ear, perfect, not a single thread out of place. His blue-tipped ears pricked at her approach, and one large blue eye opened, then both, and he looked at her with the specific expression of a kitten who had been perfectly comfortable and was now being disturbed.

One core was significantly larger than the others. Rodent-shaped. Dense with essence. The mouse.

She almost didn’t notice the rest.

Almost. But Kazren had spent twelve months teaching her to read spaces, and the space around Takara told a story. Claw marks on trees — deep, precise, the kind left by something much larger than a kitten. Scorched earth in patterns that suggested not wildfire but controlled, surgical destruction. The lingering essence of things that had died very, very badly, radiating outward from a kitten who weighed less than a bag of flour.

A three-kilometre kill zone. Centred on a kitten sitting on a rock.

Tactical note: the destruction pattern is inconsistent with local fauna. Radius approximately three kilometres. Single-origin strike patterns. Surgical precision. Whatever did this possessed significant — no. Extreme combat capability.

She looked at the kitten. The kitten looked at her.

Behavioural patterns inconsistent with stated species classification.

The Federation voice, for once, was understating it. She’d left him alone in the deep zone of a Secret Realm — one of the most dangerous environments in the Lower Realm. Peak Blazecrowned beasts roamed here. The mouse alone had been strong enough to chase her for half a day. And she’d found him sitting on its core. Grooming himself.

Not hiding. Not injured. Not traumatised. Sitting on a pile of trophies with his ribbon straight.

(He’s not a kitten.)

The thought arrived quietly. Not with shock — with the slow, heavy certainty of something she’d been refusing to see. The way he’d tracked movements too precisely. The way his eyes had focused on threats before she’d noticed them. The way he’d infiltrated her sealed backpack. The way he’d survived the mouse chase without a scratch when she — a cultivator with Federation training and months of Pavilion instruction — had barely escaped with her life.

(He’s been protecting us. The whole time.)

Assessment confirmed. Entity designated ”Takara” is not a domestic feline. Combat capability, tactical awareness, and survival outcomes are consistent with a high-tier cultivated beast maintaining deep cover. Classification: unknown. Threat level: allied, but unknown scope.

She crouched. Slowly. Not reaching for him yet. Just... looking. Really looking. The way Kazren had taught her to look at the space around a blade — not at the surface, but at what the surface was hiding.

Small body. Blue-tipped ears. Pink ribbon. Large blue eyes that watched her with an intelligence she’d been explaining away for months as he’s very smart for a kitten because the alternative required asking questions she hadn’t been ready to ask.

She was ready now.

”We all have secrets, little one,” she said quietly. ”You can keep yours.”

Takara went still. Not kitten-still — the frozen alertness of something assessing whether its cover had been compromised and what the tactical implications were. His blue eyes fixed on her face. Searching. Reading.

Then — slowly, deliberately — he blinked. Once. Long and slow. Not a kitten’s sleepy blink. A warrior’s acknowledgement. The kind of look that passed between soldiers who recognised each other across a battlefield.

He understood that. Every word.

(I know.)

One heartbeat. Two.

Then Takara mewed. Pitifully. His small body went soft and boneless, and he flopped sideways on his rock with the dramatic helplessness of a kitten who had been alone and scared and was very grateful his person had come back.

He pawed at the air. Tiny claws. Pathetic.

She almost laughed. Almost. She could see it now — the act, the performance, the careful construction of adorable helplessness laid over whatever he actually was. And it was better now. Funnier. Because she knew, and he knew she knew, and he was doing it anyway.

”Good boy,” she said. Scooped him up. He melted against her shoulder, purring with theatrical intensity, his claws hooking into her collar with the grip of something that had never once been in danger of falling. ”You survived.”

Mew.

She held him. Warm weight, small heartbeat, the vibration of a purr that she now understood was entirely voluntary. He’d been choosing to purr. Choosing to be soft. Choosing to be carried and petted and dressed in ribbons by wyrmlings, all while watching, assessing, protecting.

(Who are you?)

She wouldn’t ask. Not here, not now. She’d confirm with Isha when they left the realm. For now, it was enough to know that the small creature on her shoulder wasn’t what he seemed, and that whatever he was, he’d been on her side from the beginning.

Something shifted between them. Not friendship — not exactly. Respect. The quiet kind that didn’t need words or explanations or grand declarations. Just the knowledge that they were both more than they appeared, and neither needed the other to prove it.

”Kazren, this is Takara. He’s my — he’s a companion.”

Not ”kitten.” Not anymore. Not to herself.

From the sword, through the bond, the sensation of an ancient sword spirit examining a small white creature and arriving at conclusions significantly faster than Jayde had.

”...Interesting,” Kazren said. And nothing more.

(The sword spirit knows too.)

Everyone knows except us, apparently.

(We know NOW.)

Takara purred. His blue eyes half-closed. To anyone watching, just a kitten being held. To Jayde — a warrior at rest, choosing to trust the person holding him.

She’d take it.

***

Nine days left. Eden was out there somewhere — competent, capable, but separated and alone in a realm that was getting more dangerous as the weeks passed. Beasts pushed to the edges, resources thinning, students getting desperate.

Jayde moved. Faster now. Vael’kir lived in her soul, warm and present, a thought away from her hand. Takara rode her shoulder, claws hooked into her collar, one ear twitching at every sound. Kazren observed the forest through her senses and found it wanting.

”Your stride length is inconsistent.”

(The sword is still talking.)

He will talk forever. Accept it.

Mew.

Three voices. One body. A divine sword in her soul, a kitten on her shoulder, and an ancient sword spirit critiquing her walking form.

Welcome to the new normal.

”Also, your left foot pronates. We will address this.”

She kept walking. Faster. The forest opened ahead of her, and somewhere in it was Eden — competent, capable, but alone.

Jayde intended to find her. And then — nine days, a closing realm, and whatever came after — they’d figure the rest out together.

Vael’kir hummed. Takara purred. Kazren critiqued.

She moved.
