Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 288: Chapter 283: Ren Learns Consequences

Location:Kael’thoren Fortress → Zhū’kethara

Date/Time:Early Ashbloom, 9939 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The hum started low.

Ren felt it before he heard it — a vibration in the Common Path that didn’t belong to any of his eight million threads. Prophetic energy. The resonance that preceded a Seeing, building like the pressure before a thunderbreak, felt in the teeth and the chest before the sound arrived.

He stood at the edge of the training chamber in Kael’thoren Fortress, far enough from the centre that his presence wouldn’t disrupt the working but close enough to intervene if something went wrong. Vaelith knelt beside the formation circle she’d inscribed on the stone floor — a controlled space, a channelled frame, the healer’s answer to a prophetic gift that had already cost a fourteen-year-old girl five years of her life. Her vivid green-gold eyes tracked the formation’s pulse with the specific focus of a woman who’d spent months turning catastrophe into something approaching method.

Lyria sat at the circle’s centre. Cross-legged. Wings tucked. Her gossamer Aetherwing wings — brighter now than they’d been months ago, luminous with the essence that her Shan’keth vine was feeding into every part of her body — folded tight against her back. The vine itself was visible at her jaw and throat, pale tendrils of white-green-gold climbing the architecture of her face with a speed that made Vaelith’s clinical composure slip every time she measured it. The silver prophetic rune sat at the vine’s centre, between her brows, cradled by the Shan’keth like a flower held by its stem.

Voresh stood behind her. His hand rested on her shoulder — light, steady, the weight of an anchor offered rather than imposed. Four leaves on the Vor’kesh vine at his throat. Four, where there’d been one the day they’d met. The tarnished copper of his eyes had warmed in the months since — not bright, not yet, not after thirty thousand years of ice, but no longer the dead flat of a man planning his own end.

He was ready to catch her.

”Breathe,” Vaelith said. ”Find the question before you open the sight. Direct it. Don’t let it direct you.”

Lyria breathed. Her storm-grey eyes — shot through now with gold and green, the Shan’keth’s colours bleeding into everything — closed. The rune on her forehead blazed silver-white.

The hum deepened.

Ren had seen Lyria’s visions before. The early ones had been violent — thrashing, screaming, the prophetic gift tearing through an untrained mind like a flood through a broken dam. Those days were over. Vaelith’s methods worked. Months of controlled exercises, anchored in Voresh’s presence, framed by formations designed to channel rather than suppress. Lyria could choose now. Direct her sight toward specific questions instead of being overwhelmed by the torrent of unfiltered futures.

Today’s question had been Vaelith’s. Quiet, careful, asked with the precision of a healer probing a wound: What is the Temple doing with the children?

Lyria’s face went still. The kind of still that preceded horror — the moment before understanding arrived, when the mind was processing what the sight had already shown and hadn’t yet delivered its verdict to the conscious self.

Her hands clenched. On her shoulder, Voresh’s grip tightened — not pulling her back, not breaking the vision, but holding. Present. His Vor’kesh pulsed faintly.

When she spoke, her voice cracked on the second word.

”It’s not just mixed-bloods anymore.”

Silence. The formation circle hummed. Vaelith’s hands hovered over the channelling points, ready to sever the connection if necessary.

”Temple academies,” Lyria said. Her eyes were still closed, still seeing. ”In the Lower Realm. They’re offering education — free, after Kindling Day. Parents — the parents are thrilled. Their children selected for the best training in the realm. They’re so proud.”

Her jaw tightened. The vine at her throat pulsed.

”The children leave willingly. Eagerly. Hundreds of them. They’re sorted at the facilities — tested, measured. The talented ones get separated. Transported. To the Mid Realm.” Her voice dropped to something barely audible. ”The rest — I can’t — the vision won’t show me what happens to the rest.”

Vaelith’s hands moved. Lyria’s eyes snapped open, the rune guttering from white to silver to dim.

”They’re doing it to human children now.”

The training chamber was silent.

Voresh’s hand hadn’t moved from Lyria’s shoulder. His gaze was fixed on the middle distance with an expression Ren recognised — the particular blankness of a warrior processing tactical information that was also personally devastating.

Vaelith rose. She looked at Ren. Her expression was controlled. Her hands were not — the faintest tremor in fingers that had spent eighteen thousand years healing.

”Val’ren,” she said. ”I need to brief you. In person.”

***

The war room in Zhū’kethara was carved from a single piece of ironwood — table, walls, the tactical surface where demon campaigns had been planned for millennia. The wood was dark, dense, and nearly indestructible. The table alone weighed more than a warhorse.

Vaelith stood across it from him and delivered the report. Clean. Clinical. The tremor in her hands was gone — she’d buried it somewhere between the fortress and the city, locked it behind the professional detachment that had carried her through eighteen thousand years of healing the unhealable.

The pipeline, she explained, had been running for at least a year. Possibly longer. The Temple’s ”scholarship” programme in the Lower Realm operated through the same Kindling Day testing infrastructure that every community relied on to identify cultivation potential. Children were tested. The talented ones were offered places at Temple-affiliated academies. Parents — poor, hopeful, desperate for their children to have a better life — accepted without hesitation.

The children never came back.

”How many?” Ren asked.

”Hundreds confirmed through Lyria’s vision. The infrastructure suggests thousands. The programme spans multiple Lower Realm cities — she saw at least four testing sites before I ended the session.”

Ren’s hands were flat on the ironwood table. Not clenched. Flat. Fingers spread. Controlled.

The table creaked.

This was a table that had survived siege warfare and the impact of Inferno strikes during training exercises. It was not designed to creak. It creaked because the king pressing his hands against it was exerting a force that ironwood was not entirely certain it could resist, and the wood was complaining about it in the only language it possessed.

”The Temple’s recruitment model,” Vaelith continued, and her clinical tone was costing her something visible in the tightness around her eyes, ”mirrors the mixed-blood operation. Identify. Recruit. Separate the valuable from the expendable. Transport to controlled facilities. The methodology is identical. Only the target population has expanded.”

”From mixed-bloods to humans.”

”From mixed-bloods to everyone with potential.”

Ren said nothing for a long time.

Through the Common Path, eight million threads hummed with the ordinary noise of lives being lived — warriors training, children playing, the integration grinding forward through discomfort and hope and the stubborn refusal to stop trying. None of them knew what he’d just learned. None of them could know. The investigation was contained to a circle so tight that the information existed in fewer than a dozen minds.

His mind calculated. He had been calculating since Vaelith started speaking, because the alternative to calculating was acting, and acting meant exposing everything.

Intervening in the Lower Realm meant revealing that the demon realm was recovering. That eight hundred thousand mixed-bloods had been absorbed. That the military was reorganising, the population growing, the infrastructure rebuilding. Sharlin — and every thread of intelligence pointed to her, the High Priestess who should have been confined to the Temple’s prophetic functions but who was, by every account, running the entire operation — would learn that her primary victim had become her primary threat. Every mixed-blood child playing in Zhū’kethara’s courtyards would become a target. Every pregnant woman whose footsteps bloomed with Vor’lumen would become a vulnerability.

He could save the children from being harvested. He could not save the children already saved.

”We cannot act yet.”

The words cost him something. Vaelith saw it. She didn’t flinch — she was too old, too steady, too thoroughly a healer to flinch at the sound of a king choosing calculus over conscience. But her eyes held his, and in them was the acknowledgment that this decision was correct and monstrous and necessary, all at once.

”How long?” she asked.

”Months. At minimum. The military integration needs time. Theron’s translation corps. The Kael’thoren retraining with mixed-blood combat techniques. The intelligence network in the Lower Realm is barely established.” He listed them without inflection. Facts. Variables. The components of an equation that would one day produce a number sufficient to act. ”When we move, we move with enough force that the Temple cannot retaliate. Not before.”

”And in the interim?”

”In the interim, we document. We map the pipeline. We identify every facility, every transport route, every priest involved. When the time comes, we don’t rescue — we dismantle.”

Vaelith inclined her head. Turned. Left.

Ren stood alone in the war room.

He placed his palm against his chest. Lifted it toward the ceiling — slowly, deliberately, the reverence gesture that demons used for the sacred and the lost and the things they could not yet reach. For the children being sorted in Temple facilities. For the parents who had watched them go with pride. For the talented ones separated and the rest whose fate Lyria’s vision had refused to show.

His hand hung in the air. The ironwood table still carried the imprint of his fingers — shallow depressions in wood that should not have deformed. He left them there. Evidence of a restraint that was harder than any blow he’d ever struck.

The garden behind the training chambers at Kael’thoren was one of the few places where Vor’lumen flowers had taken root outside Zhū’kethara. The blooms were sparse here — pale, tentative, feeding on whatever essence bled through the fortress walls — but Lyria had found them, and she was sitting among them, and they were dimming.

Ren watched from the upper walkway as Voresh found her.

The old scout moved through the garden without sound. Thirty thousand years of movement training distilled into the specific silence of a man who understood that the person he was approaching needed presence, not announcement. He reached the stone bench where Lyria sat, and he sat beside her.

Not touching. Close enough that his shadow — long in the afternoon light, cast by a body that had been sculpted by millennia of war and worn by millennia of loss — fell across her folded wings.

The Vor’lumen flowers between them pulsed faintly. Dimmed.

Lyria wasn’t crying. She was past crying — or before it, in the hollow space where the weight of what she’d seen hadn’t yet converted into an emotion she could name. Fourteen years old. Looking nineteen. Sitting in a demon fortress garden surrounded by sacred flowers that were wilting in sympathy with her grief, and she wasn’t crying because crying implied a scale of feeling that had a boundary, and what she’d seen didn’t.

”I could See more,” she said. Quiet. Controlled. Her hands were folded in her lap, her wings flat against her back. The silver rune on her forehead still glowed faintly — residual, the last ember of a vision that had burned through her sight and left behind the images of children being measured for their potential. ”If I looked deeper. Held the vision longer. I could find where the facilities are. Map them. Give Ren coordinates.”

”And burn another year of your life.” Voresh’s voice was low. Not a command. An observation. The tone of a man who had spent three decades learning to state facts without judgment.

She looked at him. Gold and green bled through the grey of her irises — the Shan’keth’s colours rewriting her from the inside out, turning a prophet into something the demon realm hadn’t seen in millennia.

”Is it worth it? A year of my life for a hundred children?”

Voresh was quiet for a time. The Vor’lumen flowers between them pulsed — dim, dim, faintly brighter. The old warrior’s gaze was steady on the garden wall, on the distance beyond it, on the decades and centuries and millennia that separated his experience from hers.

”That is not a question I can answer for you,” he said.

Pause. Long. The kind of pause that contained calculation.

”But I would rather you lived to save a thousand.”

Neither of them spoke after that. In the silence, the fourth leaf on Voresh’s Vor’kesh pulsed — a warmth that Ren, watching from the walkway above, could feel through the Common Path like a low, steady heartbeat. Not love. Not yet. Something older and simpler: the bond between two people who had seen the same horror and chosen to sit beside each other in the aftermath rather than sit alone.

The Vor’lumen flowers brightened. Slowly. Not to their full glow — that would take time, and proximity, and the kind of healing that couldn’t be rushed. But enough. Enough to push back the dimness. Enough to say that the garden was still alive and so were they.

Ren turned away. Some moments were too private for a king.

***

Zhū’kethara at evening.

He walked the streets because he needed to see it — needed the evidence of what they’d built set against the knowledge of what they couldn’t yet stop. The residential districts were full. Children ran between the terraces, mixed-blood and pure-blood playing the formless games that children invented when left unsupervised and unafraid. The Vor’lumen trails still threaded through every major walkway, pale flowers marking the daily paths of pregnant women whose diluted demon blood remembered what their minds had never known.

Gorreth passed below, on the terrace where he walked every evening now. The four-year-old was on his shoulders. She was holding a new rock — quartz, from the look of it, milky white with a vein of pink — and explaining its qualities to Gorreth in a voice that carried across the district.

”It’s a GOOD rock,” she said. Emphatic. Definitive.

Gorreth nodded. ”Good rock,” he agreed. His Common was improving daily.

She saw Ren. Waved — the enthusiastic, whole-arm wave of a child who did not understand rank and would not have cared if she did.

Ren waved back. His expression did not change.

Through the Common Path, the city hummed. Eight million lives. Training grounds where mixed-blood women were teaching demon warriors techniques forged in survival. Mediation chambers where Theron’s four apprentice translators were terrible and getting less terrible. The southern boundary, where the desert had retreated fifty metres and was still retreating. Evidence. Growing faster than the arguments against it.

And somewhere in the Lower Realm — beyond the borders he could not cross, in facilities he could not reach, through a pipeline he could not yet dismantle — children were being sorted. Tested. Separated. The talented ones taken. The rest discarded.

Every child playing in Zhū’kethara’s courtyards was proof that rescue was possible. Every child being harvested in the Lower Realm was proof that possible wasn’t fast enough.

He reached the city’s southern edge. The desert stretched before him — endless, patient, the wasteland that had been advancing for ten thousand years and was only now, grudgingly, being pushed back. Beyond it, beyond the Demon Realm’s borders, beyond the dimensional barriers that separated his world from the surface — the Lower Realm. The Mid Realm. The Temple.

Ren stood at the boundary and looked south. The Vor’lumen flowers at his feet cast faint green-gold light across the dark soil — the colour of a realm that was learning to live again, one root at a time.

”Soon,” he said.

Not a promise. Promises could be broken.

An oath.
