The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Song Zhiqing heard Cheng Yong’s report, and with a gloomy face, silently accepted the mourning clothes handed to him without saying a word.

Cheng Yong cautiously advised, ”Master, the Grand Madam has a point. Concubine Bai died an unnatural death. It would be good to have the monks at the temple chant sutras day and night for her, so she may reincarnate sooner.”

”What do you know, Concubine Bai was extremely timid. Now that I’ve left her here alone, she must be terrified,” Song Zhiqing said, bursting into tears. ”Just this morning she was still alive, and now suddenly we’re separated by life and death?”

Cheng Yong said, ”Even if she’s scared, the monks are chanting sutras for her. Otherwise, if her spirit follows you back to the manor, that would be frightening. She died unnaturally, so she must be filled with resentment.”

Song Zhiqing’s sobbing halted, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up.

A gust of wind blew past, bringing a chilling sensation over him. He shivered and said, ”This wasn’t caused by me. Even with resentment, it shouldn’t be directed at me.”

”I’ve heard that people can’t reincarnate if they can’t let go of those they loved the most. I thought, Concubine Bai must be most attached to you and the Fifth Young Master?”

Song Zhiqing: ”...”

”Children should not speak of bizarre or supernatural matters. You lowly servant, don’t frighten me.”

”So letting the monks at the temple chant sutras for her spirit is for the best. Set up a small spirit tablet in the Yoran Garden, and that should suffice.”

Song Zhiqing felt unsettled but spoke with feigned annoyance, ”The Grand Madam has already spoken, as her son, how can I ignore her words? Just let it be decided this way. Pity for Lian’er.”

He recalled the little moments between them in the past two years, like a dream. It all felt surreal, not quite real.

...

The news from Xingshan Temple reached Song Zhiyuan after he spoke with Master Buhui and returned to the study. Already vexed by Buhui’s blunt words, upon hearing Song Zhiqing’s thoughtless actions, an inexplicable rage surged within him.

”If he is so sentimental, perhaps he should have a separate residence. If he wishes to hold a funeral, let him hold a funeral. If he insists on issuing an obituary, let him do so. This way, he can fully express his deep feelings.”

Jiang Fula and Song Zhicheng exchanged a look, both feeling a tremor in their hearts. The Prime Minister (Eldest Brother) was extremely furious, subtly mentioning the possibility of dividing the family.

Song Zhicheng said, ”Eldest Brother, as you know, among us brothers, he is the most clueless, not even up to par with Brother Four. Honestly, if he hadn’t clung to you all these years, how could he have reached his current position? We all know what kind of fool he is. If you let him upset you, it’s not worth it.”

As he scolded aloud, he also cursed Song Zhiqing in his heart, his brains must be filled with dung, thinking of nothing but dung. How could he be so muddle-headed, being an official of the Fifth Rank?

Clearly, during those years in Datong, he was fine, but once he returned, he became like an unruly horse, more and more out of control.

Song Zhiyuan sneered coldly, ”Why should I be angry with him? Initially, I thought since Lady Bai is gone, he could remain blissfully ignorant. But now it seems, Bai’s death in such unclear circumstances will make this fool remember her for a lifetime, lamenting endlessly.”

”So, have Lady Bai brought back? When Brother Three returns, take him to the Punishment Hall. Perhaps then, he will understand what terrible masks those around him are wearing, lest he misplaces his deep feelings.” Song Zhiyuan’s voice was chillingly calm. As a loving eldest brother, he needed to deeply ’care’ for his sibling.

Listening to this, Song Zhicheng felt goosebumps rise once again.

Brother Three is doomed. The Eldest Brother is definitely going to stir trouble.
