Villains Aren't Stepping Stones!

The quiet sanctuary of the Saintess’s bedchamber was drowned in the stillness of deep night.

Faint, sweet coils of white-tea incense drifted lazily from the bronze censer, weaving through the carved sandalwood lattice screens and dissolving into the shadows.

The pale moonlight filtering through the high balcony pooled across the smooth silk sheets, painting the spacious room in serene shades of silver and lavender.

At thus moment, Su Xishi was cultivating on the bed.

She sat cross-legged upon the plush velvet mattress, her slender porcelain ankles tucked beneath the billowing folds of her robes.

Her hands rested lightly upon her knees, palms turned upward, fingers poised in the serene meditative seal.

Around her lithe torso, subtle, translucent ribbons of pristine spiritual energy circulated in a gentle, rhythmic orbit, cooling the air around her skin to the brink of frost while preserving the unbreached, sacred fire of her primal yin within her lower dantian.

Just then, the wind suddenly blew.

It was not the bitter, sulfurous mountain draft that usually rattled the gothic lancet windows of her room.

It was a strange, impossible draft that slipped straight through the triple layered sound-dampening arrays and anti-divination wards protecting her residence.

The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of unformed lightning and an ancient, suffocating gravity that made the flame inside the bronze censer bow flat against the ash.

She frowned, eyes closed, her long eyelashes fluttered with cold, aristocratic irritation.

Without bothering to disrupt the smooth circulation of her meridians, she let her voice drop into that sharp, haughty tone she reserved for the prying handmaidens of the inner court.

”I remember telling you that I don’t like being disturbed when I’m cultivating.”

”...Oh? You seem like a big shot now.”

The deep, resonant voice cut through the perfumed air with casual, effortless amusement.

It did not carry the obsequious reverence of her palace attendants, nor the nervous hesitation of Chen Xu.

It rolled across the room like a crack of thunder echoing off a distant mountain peak, smooth as aged wine and heavy with sovereign authority.

Su Xishi’s eyes opened wide, her heart violently seized beneath her ribs, her breath catching in her throat with such sudden force that her spiritual circulation nearly misaligned.

As she turned around, her long hair whipping over her shoulder, the serene composure of the Saintess vanished entirely.

There, she saw Shen Haoran.

He stood in the shadowed alcove beside the balcony, where the moonlight broke against the dark sandalwood panels.

He was clad in his iconic black robes embroidered with golden dragons that seemed to slumber beneath the surface of the fabric, rippling with faint, predatory life with every breath he drew.

His arms were folded comfortably across his chest, and his golden eyes, glowing like twin miniature suns in the dim room, looked down upon her with a leisurely, mocking warmth.

He had penetrated the highest sanctuary of the Demonic Lotus Sect without triggering a single ward, standing inside her private chamber as if he owned the very ground beneath her bed.

”Young Master Shen!”

She stood up, smiling, the shock in her eyes instantly melting into a radiant, breathless joy that lit up her entire countenance.

”What are you doing here?”

Her voice was sweet, melodious, and laced with genuine wonder.

Haoran walked towards her, his boots made no sound against the thick wool carpet, each stride carrying that slow, unhurried dominance of an apex predator patrolling his personal domain.

The ambient spatial currents in the room seemed to bend in deference to his silhouette as he closed the distance between them.

”I’ve met with your seniors outside,” Haoran remarked casually, his lips curved into an amused smirk, ”and they told me that you’re planning on taking over this sect and make it a base of your palace.”

Su Xishi blinked, and then a wry, faintly embarrassed chuckle slipped past her rose-petal lips.

She tapped her chin with a fingertip, shaking her head, ”Those two... I should have known they wouldn’t last a single breath before spilling everything. Senior Sister Mei and Senior Sister Ruo are capable cultivators, but the moment a man of your caliber steps into their sight, their brains simply melt out of their ears. I take it they were rather... enthusiastic?”

”They were quite eager to share,” Haoran chuckled, stopping at the edge of the bed. ”They told me all about your plans.”

”Yes, well. The layout of this sect is simply too convenient to ignore, Young Master,” Su Xishi explained, stepping forward, her posture shifting from that of an untouchable maiden to that of a sharp, calculating strategist. ”The Demonic Lotus Sect controls the primary transit arteries between the northern region and the southern trade routes. Their mountain is fortified with volcanic formations, and their territory is rich in rare yin-attributed herbs that are extinct in the central provinces. More importantly, their current leadership is fractured and terrified. If I seal the central palace, and purge the opposing factions, the entire valley can be brought under complete control without shedding a single drop of our own disciples’ blood.”

She paused, looking up into his golden eyes with an expression of awe and reverence.

”But young master, if you need this, I will give up my plans.”

Her words were entirely sincere. She had spent five grueling years cultivating her position, enduring the obsequious flatteries of demonic elders and orchestrating a bloodless coup.

Yet she knew the brutal reality of power: if Shen Haoran wanted this mountain flattened into ash, or if he required the territory for his own grand campaign, she would gladly shatter her five years of labor with her own hands.

In the presence of a true monarch, personal pride was merely a stepping stone.

”No, you continue.”

Haoran sat down on the bed, and he immediately sank comfortably into the silk cushions, resting one arm casually over his knee, looking at her with relaxed, approving eyes.

”While I’m on my way here, I heard from some disciples that you are being set up to marry their young sect master.”

The playful mockery in his voice was unmistakable, his brow arched with dangerous amusement.

Su Xishi shook her head, letting out a sharp, delicate snort of pure, unadulterated contempt.

”Just that old hag wanting to bind me with her son. Honestly, does she think being the offspring of a fox and a lizard makes her worthy of me?”

Her lips curled in venomous derision. To an outsider, Chen Xu was a handsome, noble born dragon scion whose future was boundless.

But to Su Xishi, who carried the blood of the Nine Tailed Demon Fox and the teachings of the higher realm, a hybrid birthed from a backwater fox and a lake lizard was nothing more than an ugly mongrel dressed in silk.

”Hoh?”

Haoran tilted his head, his golden pupils flashing with a spark of dark, teasing curiosity.

”And who is the one that can be worthy of you, oh Saintess of the Blissful Immortal Coupling Palace?”

The air in the room suddenly grew thick, charged with an intoxicating, electric tension as Su Xishi smiled seductively.

The cold, haughty demeanor of the strategist evaporated, replaced instantly by the ancient, peerless spiritual charm of the Nine Tailed Demon Fox.

Her eyes softened into pools of shimmering, liquid gold, heavy with an innate, intoxicating allure that could bring ancient monarchs to their knees.

Kicking off her delicate posture, she dropped down onto the mattress and crawled on the bed on all fours.

Her movements were breathtakingly fluid and feline. The loose silk of her robes clung tightly to the exquisite, rolling curves of her waist and the voluptuous, proud swell of her hips.

Circling around Haoran, her movements were as silent as drifting smoke as she crept past his shoulder, her fluffy, well-groomed fox tail flared to life behind her back, swaying through the air like banners of liquid starlight.

Her fox tail then brushee against him, the soft, velvety fur tracing a slow, tantalizing path along the curve of his broad shoulder, brushing lightly against the nape of his neck with an electrifying warmth.

She stared at him, and purred. ”Obviously, only someone like you, Young Master.”

Her voice was like warm honey poured over velvet, vibrating with a breathless, shameless devotion that echoed directly within the soul.

Haoran chuckled, unbothered by the overwhelming charm washing over his senses.

”If that brat were to see you act like this to me, I wonder what his expression would be.”

”Nothing,” Su Xishi purred.

With a graceful, effortless twist of her waist, she slipped onto his lap and sat down facing him.

Her lithe, fragrant body settled firmly against hie robes, her soft thighs bracketing his waist, her face barely three inches from his chiseled jaw.

Her hands, slender, pale, and exquisitely manicured, rested casually against his broad collarbones, her tail fanning out behind her.

Her breath, smelling of sweet winter lotus and crushed jasmine, washed softly against his lips.

”After all, he wouldn’t see me like this. Ever.”

Her gaze was unblinking, burning with exclusivity.

To the rest of the world, she was the ice-cold, untouchable Saintess who walked through the mud without letting a single speck of dust soil her hem.

Chen Xu would never see this feral, teasing fox; Da Xiaomi would never see this shameless submission; the entire Demonic Lotus Sect would die without ever knowing the fire that burned behind her placid smile.

This side of her existence belonged solely to the man who could hold the sky in his fist.

Haoran looked down into those pair of purple eyes, his sharp gase piercing straight through the layers of seductive charm, reading the uncorrupted, pristine seal deep within her soul.

”I heard you wanted to be like your master, to use the lust of others to fuel your own dao while remaining pure yourself,” Haoran spoke softly, his deep voice vibrating against her chest. ”It seems like, it’s simply because you haven’t found someone you are willing to give up your path for.”

Su Xishi simply smiled at that.

She did not deny it. She leaned in slightly closer, the tip of her delicate nose almost brushing against his cheek, her smile turning soft, complex, and profoundly honest.

”Indeed. And Young Master, although I greatly admire you, and I act like this for you, I don’t want to give up my path just for a momentary pleasure with you.”

The flirtatious, teasing cadence in her voice smoothed out into a quiet, unshakeable bedrock of personal pride.

She desired him, his strength, his majesty, his terrifying sovereignty, with an intensity that made her heart ache.

But she was not an ordinary harem bird willing to clip her own wings just to warm an emperor’s bed for a few fleeting nights.

Her master had taught her that a woman who surrenders her foundational Dao for physical desire becomes nothing more than a discarded furnace, a forgotten flower withering in an imperial garden.

She wanted the peak. She wanted to stand at the summit of the Supreme Emperor realm with her pristine yin intact, wielding the full, terrifying authority of the Nine Tailed Demon Fox!

Haoran nodded at that.

There was no anger on his face, no insulted pride of a young master who had been denied his prize.

Instead, he smirked.

The golden eyes flared with a sudden, radiant brilliance that illuminated her face with breathtaking intensity.

”And that will alone is making me interested in you.”

He raised his right hand, his long, warm fingers gently tracing the elegant line of her jawline, his touch firm, commanding, yet carrying a profound, rare appreciation.

”Do you know what kind of women disgust me the most, Xishi?” Haoran asked, his voice dropping into a low, resonant rumble that echoed off the high rafters.

”It is those who lack ambition.”

He sneered slightly, his gaze drifting past her shoulder toward the window, looking out over the sleeping, complacent world.

”The cultivation world is infested with weak, pathetic creatures who mistake submission for devotion. Women who possess exceptional bloodlines, who are blessed with rare physiques and ancient inheritances, yet the moment they encounter a powerful man, they throw away their swords, shatter their own foundations, and beg to become a delicate flower resting in his shadow. They think that by clinging to a man’s waist, his glory becomes their own.”

”They are parasites. They are useless baggage that drags down the momentum of the heavens.”

Haoran turned his golden eyes back to Su Xishi, his gaze heavy.

”I don’t like women who can only watch me from behind. I have no use for a consort who weeps in a golden cage, trembling whenever the skies bleed, waiting for me to return from the battlefield to wipe her tears. If a woman wants to be by my side, she must be capable of walking with me!”

”She must possess the will to butcher her enemies in the dark, the ruthless ambition to conquer empires in my name, and the terrifying resolve to climb the bloody mountain of cultivation with her own two feet!”

”I want an empress who can command an entire flank of my war, who can hold an entire realm in her fist while I tear down the gods, and whose eyes never waver from the summit!”

His fingers lightly tapped against the soft skin beneath her chin, his smirk widening into a breathtaking arch that made her heart race with wild, delirious adrenaline.

”And you, Su Xishi, are just my type of woman.”
