Villains Aren't Stepping Stones!

”Huo Yue... Do you believe in gods?”

’Of course not,’ Huo Yue thought immediately, the cynical instinct of a hunted cultivator flaring within her mind.

To anyone raised under the harsh, cutthroat skies of the cultivation world, the concept of a true ”god” was nothing more than an archaic myth concocted by terrified mortals who lacked the spiritual roots to cultivate.

Mortals invented gods to comfort themselves against catastrophic droughts, pestilence, and the casual collateral damage of cultivators clashing in the upper firmament.

When an elder at the Heavenly Saint realm split a mountain range with a single wave of his sleeve, ignorant villagers would prostrate themselves in the dirt, weeping about divine wrath.

When a wandering Supreme stepped across the sea, creating islands from cooled magma, the primitives etched his silhouette onto stone tablets as a creator deity.

To a cultivator, the cosmos was cold, indifferent, and governed strictly by strength.

There were no benevolent overseers, no eternal entities answering prayers out of compassion.

There were only higher realms, denser spiritual qi, and the unyielding tyranny of the strong devouring the weak.

Yet, sitting naked beneath a rough linen blanket in the heart of this ancient, volcanic sanctuary, feeling the terrifying, unfathomable depth of the solar authority radiating from the statuesque woman leaning over her, Huo Yue didn’t dare voice her blunt cynicism out loud.

She possessed enough instinct to survive to know when a provocative truth would only insult her host.

Swallowing the dryness in her throat, Huo Yue met Augusta’s piercing hazel eyes and asked with genuine curiosity.

”Are gods really real? How are they different from Immortals or Saints?”

Augusta smiled and shook her head, the movements of her golden flame-silk robes shimmering like liquid sunset in the filtered morning light.

”Different,” Augusta answered softly, her voice carrying the quiet, absolute weight of an ancient chronicle. ”Completely different.”

The Chief of the Sun Tribe stood upright once more, turning her gaze toward the open window where the active caldera rumbled in the distance, breathing sulfur and heat into the boundless azure sky.

The key difference is where their power comes from and what they fundamentally are.

To a mortal or an inexperienced practitioner, both an Immortal and a God appear omnipotent—both can tear the firmament, dry up entire oceans, and command celestial phenomena with a passing thought.

Yet beneath the veil of phenomenon, their foundations exist upon entirely divergent planes of existence.

Augusta turned back toward the grass mat, her long, silky orange hair trailing behind her shoulders like a banner of twilight.

She raised a pale, elegant finger, outlining the invisible currents of energy flowing through the rustic hut.

”Consider the flame you harbor in your soul, Huo Yue,” Augusta said, her hazel eyes gleaming with ancient insight. ”A cultivator begins in the dust. You consume spiritual herbs, temper your muscles, build your foundation, forge a core, and nurture a nascent soul. Step by step, through grueling comprehension and countless brushes with death, you comprehend the Dao of Fire. Eventually, should you reach the apex of the mortal ladder and step beyond the threshold of mortality, you become an Immortal capable of manipulating fire at an unimaginable level. You can summon oceans of flame, ignite the void, and burn through celestial barriers. But that fire is an external force you have mastered through comprehension—a tool of your transcendent will.”

Augusta tapped the palm-sized, star-gold sun medallion resting against her sternum, causing its nine concentric rings to pulse with a low, radiant scarlet glow.

”But a God of Fire doesn’t merely manipulate fire,” she continued, her voice dipping into a sacred cadence. ”Fire is part of what they represent. They do not merely study the law; they hold the entire system. Their divine authority might allow them to govern flames, determine how sacred fire behaves, grant fire-related blessings, or suppress lesser beings who use fire. If an Immortal summons a flame, they are commanding the elements through spiritual supremacy. If a God of Fire speaks, the fire obeys because the God is the living seat of its reality. Within their divine domain, an ordinary cultivator’s fire might simply refuse to ignite, bending its knee to the sovereign of its concept.”

Huo Yue listened with wide, transfixed eyes, her breath catching in her throat as the fragmented puzzle pieces of the cosmos began to realign within her mind.

”Then...” Huo Yue murmured, her fingers tightening around the edge of the blanket, ”does that mean a God is inherently superior to an Immortal?”

Augusta chuckled softly, shaking her head.

”That’s the interesting part. They are equal in all aspects, it’s just a matter of choosing which pros or cons you can accept as you ascend.”

She stepped to the edge of the mat, looking down at Huo Yue with an amused, didactic warmth.

”An Immortal who has severed all karmic bonds and bathed their soul in the primordial chaos can wander into a deity’s holy land and shatter their divine pantheon through sheer, unbridled martial violence,” Augusta explained, her eyes carrying the memory of forgotten cosmic wars. ”Because the Immortal’s power is absolute self-reliance, forged through their own marrow and unyielding will. If an Immortal’s territory is destroyed, their power remains intact within their chest. But a God? A God who rules a minor river, a localized mountain range, or an isolated celestial constellation may possess an absolute, untouchable authority within the borders of that domain, yet if they are dragged out of their temple, or if their believers are slaughtered to the last infant, their divine mantle begins to rot. They are bound to the throne they occupy.”

”One is a master who carved a path through the wilderness with bare, bleeding hands until heaven itself could no longer constrain their stride,” Augusta summarized, her hand gently falling to rest atop Huo Yue’s head, radiating a comforting, ancient solar warmth. ”The other is an appointed monarch who sits upon the seat of the cosmos, holding the royal seal that tells the universe how to turn.”

”In other words, Godhood isn’t a higher cultivation realm, nor is it an absolute ceiling that sits above the path of self-refinement. Instead, it is an entirely parallel ladder of cosmic existence.”

Augusta’s hazel eyes locked onto Huo Yue’s trembling pupils, her smile deepening into something profound, unshakeable, and terrifyingly vast.

”So, Huo Yue, do you want to become a god?”

The rustic interior of the wooden hut fell into an abrupt, heavy stillness.

The distant crackle of the volcanic vents and the muted crash of ocean waves against the basalt cliffs outside seemed to recede into a distant hum, leaving the air between them dense with unspoken weight.

The morning sun, cutting through the window in pale, dust-flecked beams, illuminated the fine embroidery of Augusta’s golden flame-silk robes, highlighting the slow, radiant pulse of the nine-ringed medallion resting over her sternum.

Huo Yue sat motionless on the woven reed mat, the coarse linen blanket still gathered securely around her shoulders.

Her bare feet tucked tightly beneath her, she absorbed every word of the ancient woman’s lecture.

The distinction between an Immortal who conquered the Dao through relentless self-refinement and a God who ruled reality through inherited or conquered authority was a revelation that would have sent ripples of shock through Prime Origin Realm.

Huo Yue didn’t answer the remark about her being a god, choosing instead to let the claim hang in the humid air like smoke.

She narrowed her eyes, the golden flecks within them glinting with cold, guarded scrutiny, and simply said.

”You seem to know an awful lot about immortals and gods.”

Her voice was level, carefully stripped of reverence or awe.

Augusta did not take offense at the suspicion dripping from the young woman’s tone.

Instead, she tilted her head back slightly, and a rich, melodious chuckle spilled from her throat, smooth as aged honey and resonant with centuries of detachment.

”I know a lot more than that, girl,” Augusta said, her hazel eyes twinkling with an amused, patronizing spark as she lowered her arms, letting her wide sleeves drape gracefully toward the cedar planks. ”I know that you are from the Prime Origin Realm. I know beyond Nirvana is Profound Saint, Earthly Saint, Heavenly Saint, and Supreme Emperor. I know a lot of things.”

The Prime Origin Realm.

The cultivation realms.

The words detonated inside Huo Yue’s mind like a silent lightning strike.

Every muscle in Huo Yue’s body locked, the blood in her veins ran instantly cold, the residual warmth of her newly ignited dragon-flame marrow freezing beneath an overwhelming surge of pure, primal adrenaline.

Who is this woman?!

How can an island chieftain on a remote, primitive rock know the structural hierarchy of the upper heavens?!

And speaking of which, Huo Yue only thought of it now, but this woman also knows her real name even though she clearly gave a fake name!

Without a second thought, Huo Yue immediately put on a defensive stance.

Disregarding her bare skin beneath the cloth, she shifted her weight onto the balls of her feet, her spine bowing like a coiled tiger ready to spring.

Her left hand clamped the linen blanket across her vitals, while her right hand flattened into an ancient palm strike, her fingers slightly curved like the unsheathed talons of a fire-phoenix.

Seeing the girl’s action, Augusta didn’t even shift her footing, she didn’t summon a protective aura, nor did the terrifying pressure of the sun medallion flare in retaliation.

Augusta just raised her hand, her pale, slender palm held forward in a calm, placating gesture, and told her to calm down.

”Lower your claws, little fire,” Augusta murmured softly, her hazel eyes carrying an expression of gentle, motherly exasperation. ”If I wanted to hurt you, I would’ve never rescued you from the bottom of the abyssal trench.”

The quiet logic of the statement washed over Huo Yue like a bucket of cool well-water.

She stared at the woman’s unmoving hand, then down at the ring resting safely upon her own finger, its blood-mark undisturbed.

If an expert of this caliber truly harbored ill intent, a naked, qi-depleted girl wrapped in a sheet wouldn’t have survived long enough to draw a single breath.

Huo Yue calmed down a little after hearing that, the tense, corded muscles along her shoulders gradually loosening.

Her breath, which had hitched in her throat, escaped in a slow, ragged exhale through her teeth.

Yet, she still didn’t drop her vigilance.

Her stance softened, but her pupils remained locked onto Augusta’s every expression.

Her back remained pressed against the sturdy cedar wall, and the fingers of her right hand stayed curled, poised to strike at the slightest flicker of killing intent.

In the world of cultivation, trust was a luxury that purchased only an early grave; even a savior could simply be a buyer preparing the merchandise for a grander market.

Augusta saw the lingering edge of steel in the girl’s posture and offered a faint, approving smile.

A bird that forgot how to guard its nest did not survive the storm; this girl’s paranoia was the very armor that had kept her spirit intact through years of humiliation.

Turning her back without the slightest fear of a blind-spot attack, Augusta stepped toward the open window.

She rested her slender forearms against the weathered bamboo frame, the tropical breeze billowing through her vibrant orange hair, sending long, silky strands drifting like tongues of fire against the golden light.

Augusta stared at the sky through the window, her gaze sweeping past the rumbling, ash-spitting mouth of the active volcano, past the soaring seabirds riding the thermal updrafts, and straight toward the boundless azure expanse where the faint, translucent shimmer of a world-boundary formation hummed in the high atmosphere.

”This world holds far more secrets than you and your academy think,” Augusta said, her voice dipping into a low, melancholic cadence that seemed to carry the weight of forgotten epochs. ”You walk upon this dirt believing it to be a simple, backwater cage, a testing ground for the pampered scions of the upper heavens, a discarded pebble drifting in the astral sea. You think the sects of the Prime Origin Realm see everything from their high spires. But they are blind, Huo Yue. They study the ripples upon the surface of the pond, entirely ignorant of the slumbering leviathans that carved the bedrock beneath the deep.”

She looked at the burning sun hanging directly above the island, its light reflected in the concentric rings of the medallion against her chest.

”They measure the cosmos by the length of their swords and the density of their spirit stones,” Augusta continued softly. ”They do not know what was buried here when the first heavens collapsed. They do not know why the tides remember names that the chroniclers erased. They know nothing.”

Huo Yue remained silent.

She did not ask what secrets the woman spoke of, she did not ask about the academy, though the casual mention of it struck another silent nerve.

She kept her lips pressed into a thin line, anchoring her consciousness, patiently waiting for the true purpose behind this elaborate encounter to reveal itself.

Every cultivator who offered a sermon eventually presented the price.

At the window, Augusta slowly shook her head and sighed, the melancholic reverie fading from her sculpted features as quickly as it had arrived.

”But that doesn’t matter,” she muttered, turning away from the vast sky and brushing a stray strand of orange hair behind her ear. ”The squabbles of forgotten ages are of no use to the living. Let’s just get back to the topic at hand.”

Augusta turned back towards Huo Yue.

The casual, maternal warmth vanished from her demeanor, replaced in an instant by the suffocating majesty of an ancient high priestess standing before the altar of creation.

She took three slow, deliberate strides across the cedar floorboards, stopping directly in front of the reed mat.

The shadow of her towering, elegant frame fell across Huo Yue, but the light radiating from her sun medallion grew blindingly bright, casting sharp, dancing solar glyphs across the wooden walls of the hut.

Augusta leaned forward slightly, her captivating hazel eyes boring straight through Huo Yue’s flesh, piercing into the deepest, most private sanctuary of her sea of consciousness.

Her lips curved into an enigmatic, profound smile, and she asked, her voice vibrating with the absolute authority of the cosmos.

”Girl, do you want to become a god?”

The question hung in the air like a ringing bronze bell, shaking the silence of the room.

To become a god.

To transcend the fragile, agonizing limits of mortality without spending ten thousand years crawling through the meat-grinder of the cultivation world.

To be granted the divine mantle of an ancient authority.

To command the sacred laws, to have reality itself bend its knee before her power, to possess the unassailable strength to crush all forces into ash with a single decree.

It was an offer that would have brought the most ancient, desiccated sect patriarchs of the Prime Origin Realm crawling on their knees, weeping tears of blood, willing to butcher their own kin just to touch the hem of that golden flame-silk robe.

It was a shortcut past the impossible bottlenecks of Supreme Emperor, past the deadly heavenly tribulations that reduced ninety-nine out of every hundred geniuses to smoking cinders.

It was the ultimate, intoxicating fruit of absolute power handed to a girl on a silver platter.

Huo Yue stared at her.

Her eyes did not waver. The golden flecks within them did not blaze with greed, nor did her pupils dilate with awe.

She looked at the breathtaking woman before her—she looked at the glowing medallion, at the promise of a throne, at the radiant divinity radiating from every pore of the Chief of the Sun Tribe.

She remembered the three years of hell she had endured after her talent collapsed—how she had dragged her broken, bleeding body up the jagged steps of the sect’s mountain every single dawn to train, carrying iron pails of water until her collarbones cracked, refusing to bow her head even when spit landed upon her boots.

She remembered her master’s gentle voice, whispering that true strength was not a gift bestowed by the sky, but an iron blade hammered out of one’s own suffering.

If she accepted an authority granted by another... she would be forever bound to the throne.

If she became a god through an inheritance... her power would belong to someone else, to the domain she ruled, to the divine laws of an ancient entity she did not know.

And if the domain rotted? If the heavens revoked the seal?

She would once again be that helpless, pathetic girl watching from the mud as her master was dragged away in chains.

She did not want a borrowed throne.

She did not want to rule reality because a seat was vacant.

She wanted to tear the heavens open with her own bare, bloodied fists until the cosmos had no choice but to yield.

Huo Yue’s expression hardened, settling into a cold, unbending resolve that seemed carved from primeval diamond.

Before the expectant gaze of the ancient chieftain, Huo Yue looked Augusta dead in the eyes, before stating one thing with absolute, uncompromising finality.

”Sorry. I refuse.”
