Villains Aren't Stepping Stones!

The bamboo forest breathed with the gentle, rhythmic sighs of a secluded paradise.

Endless stalks of jade-green bamboo soared high into the azure sky, their slender leaves weaving a dense, sun-dappled canopy overhead.

Golden shafts of morning light filtered through the emerald lattice, dancing across the crystalline dew clinging to the mossy earth.

A serene mountain breeze rolled down from the mist-veiled peaks, carrying the crisp scent of damp earth, crushed bamboo shoots, and blooming white orchids.

At this moment, in the middle of this bamboo forest, outside a rustic bamboo house perched beside a bubbling brook, Luo Mingye was playing the zither.

She was seated cross-legged on a woven reed mat atop a polished timber platform.

Dressed in flowing, snow white robes trimmed with delicate sky blue silk along the wide lapels and cuffs, she exuded a cool, ethereal elegance that mirrored the tranquil surroundings.

Her long, green hair cascaded down her back like a midnight waterfall, half-pinned with a simple jade hairpin carved into the likeness of a crane in flight.

Resting across her knees was an ancient, long zither crafted from ten thousand year old, thunder struck, phoenix-wood, the best zither she possessed given to her by her grandfather.

The seven strings were woven from the refined heart tendons of silver-scaled celestial carp, shimmering with a soft, iridescent pearl luster.

Luo Mingye’s pale, slender fingers danced across the strings with breathtaking fluidity.

Cling... Tling... Zhhhang...

Every pluck, every slide, and every delicate vibration of her fingertips released notes that were not merely acoustic sounds, but visible, translucent ripples of refined spiritual intent.

The melody rose and fell like mist drifting over an autumn lake—at times carrying the gentle, playful patter of spring rain against lotus leaves, and at others swelling into the melancholic, yearning cry of a solitary bird traversing an endless, twilight sky.

The ambient forest spirit qi gathered around her platform, swaying in harmonious resonance with the cadence, as wild songbirds perched quietly on the bamboo branches overhead, entirely entranced by the sacred harmony.

Standing quietly behind her, was Enheduanna, the goddess of music, listening with rapt, unblinking attention.

The divine entity was a vision that defied mortal comprehension.

Draped in gossamer starlight woven robes that shifted through every hue of dawn, Enheduanna possessed a beauty that seemed sculpted from the very concept of melody itself.

Her luminous dark hair flowing weightlessly around her shoulders like soundwaves frozen in time.

Across her brow rested a delicate circlet of celestial bronze etched with the original harmonic scales of the primordial cosmos.

She stood with her hands folded gently before her, her eyes closed, letting the vibrations of the phoenix-wood zither wash over her divine soul.

Clang——

With the final note, struck with a resonant, lingering brush of her ring finger that vibrated through the mist until it faded into pure silence, Luo Mingye completed the song.

The forest held its breath for three full seconds before the gentle whisper of the mountain breeze returned.

Luo Mingye turned towards Enheduanna, her delicate hands resting flat upon the silent strings to mute the resonance.

Her bright emerald green eyes were calm, yet beneath that serene facade lingered a quiet, searching expectation.

Enheduanna opened her eyes and smiled, a warm, radiant expression that brought a sudden blooming of tiny white wildflowers along the edges of the bamboo platform.

”A clean piece, little maiden,” Enheduanna’s voice was like silver bells echoing across a calm sea. ”Your technique is flawless, your spirit is unpolluted, and your fingers possess the discipline of a thousand days of practice. Yet, when the melody swelled in the middle cadence, I can feel some uncertainty.”

The goddess tilted her head, her gaze piercing gently into Luo Mingye’s soul, ”Tell me, child... why did you take up the zither?”

Luo Mingye went silent for a moment, her slender fingers curled slightly against the smooth zither.

The jade-green bamboo swaying around her seemed to fade into a translucent haze as her memories brought her back to that moment many years ago.

Back then, the world was entirely different.

Yes, at that time, she was like her friend, Xia Mengyao—a bit of a tomboy who liked swords.

She had despised the rigid, stifling decorum forced upon high-born clan ladies.

She had hated embroidery, sneered at formal tea ceremonies, and found the delicate strumming of traditional instruments to be nothing more than the idle, pretentious vanity of sheltered maidens.

Her heart had belonged to the open courtyards, to the exhilarating rush of cold wind against her face, to the rough calluses forming on her palms from gripping steel practice sabers, and to the loud, boisterous laughter shared with Mengyao as they sparred until their robes were stained with grass and mud.

She had dreamed of wearing battle armor, of riding celestial winged beasts across the northern frontiers, and of carving her name onto the sky with an unyielding blade.

Until that fateful spring.

Her grandfather, Master Luo, a revered, legendary grandmaster of the ancient harmonic arts whose zither play had once calmed raging beast tides in the imperial territories, was formally invited by the Shen Clan.

It was an invitation of such paramount honor, where is to play the ceremonial zither for their young master, Shen Haoran’s, coming of age ceremony.

Luo Mingye had accompanied her grandfather to the grand ancestral domain of the Shen Clan, entirely out of petulant curiosity.

She had expected a pompous, arrogant scion draped in gaudy silks, surrounded by sycophants, bloated on the unearned prestige of his ancient family name.

Instead, she had seen him.

Shen Haoran had stood upon the elevated white-jade dais, bathed in the radiant, golden illumination of the noon sun.

Clad in sweeping, midnight-black robes embroidered with soaring golden dragons along the lapels, his tall, imposing silhouette possessed an untouchable, terrifying majesty that made the surrounding clan elders and sect masters look like withered grass.

His handsome, sculpted face was carved from primeval ice, completely devoid of the vanity or shallow pride typical of youths his age.

When her grandfather sat before the golden hall and began to play the ancient Song of the Primordial Firmament, Luo Mingye had watched the young Shen Haoran from the distant gallery.

And it was in that suspended, breathless second that her world had forever tilted on its axis.

As the masterfully plucked notes echoed through the majestic pillars, Luo Mingye saw something that no one else in the grand pavilion noticed.

She saw how the music of the zither seemed to bring out an inexplicable emotion within him.

Beneath that terrifying mask, beneath the cold calculation of an apex predator looking down upon a mortal world, a sudden, microscopic tremor had passed through Haoran’s golden pupils.

It was a flicker of something raw, ancient, and breathtakingly profound—a fleeting shadow of boundless, cosmic solitude, a nameless longing that seemed to reach toward a distant, shattered star that only he could remember.

It was as if his ancient, immortal soul had heard a distant, muffled echo from a forgotten lifetime, an unreachable sanctuary that he desperately wished to touch through the vibration of the strings.

Luo Mingye’s breath had caught violently in her chest, her heart had hammered against her ribs with an intensity that made her ears ring.

In that singular, frozen heartbeat, she did not see a terrifying young master of an immortal clan, but saw a lonely boy standing at the edge of an infinite, freezing universe, yearning for an answer that the world refused to give him.

She had watched, paralyzed, waiting for her grandfather’s music to bridge that void, waiting for the melody to wrap around that proud, solitary soul and offer him warmth.

But in the end, her grandfather’s music failed to bring out that emotion.

The piece reached its technical crescendo, it was magnificent and grand, yet it remained bounded by mortal rules, bounded by traditional technique, unable to penetrate the fathomless depth of the young man’s heart.

The resonance shattered, and that fleeting spark vanished.

And in that moment, Luo Mingye saw it.

She saw the look of disappointment, quiet, bitter, and deep, wash over Shen Haoran’s face for barely a fraction of a heartbeat.

It was an expression of a man who thought he had finally found a familiar whisper in the dark, only to realize it was merely the whistling of empty wind.

And just as quickly as it had appeared, that vulnerability was ruthlessly extinguished, instantly hidden by complete, icy indifference as Haoran raised his cup with regal, polite detachment, returning to being the untouchable young supreme.

That fleeting shadow of sorrow had pierced Luo Mingye’s heart far deeper than any sword ever could.

Right then and there, standing in the shadows of the banquet hall, she threw away her wooden practice swords.

She tossed aside her dreams of wandering the borders as a roving blade-master.

She swore an iron vow upon the very essence of her soul.

She swore that she will one day play a music that can tug his heartstrings.

She would not be just another warrior swinging steel at his command, nor another subordinate bowing to his decree.

She would master this art.

She would bleed her fingers upon the strings until her flesh tore to the bone.

She would search the deepest, most sacred melodies of heaven and earth, weaving her own soul, her own blood, and her own boundless, unreserved devotion into every note, until she could compose a song vast enough to hold his loneliness—a song so beautiful, so pure, and so profoundly intoxicating that it would tear down the walls of his solitude, pull a genuine smile to his cold lips, and gently wrap his heart in eternal, unconditional warmth.

Yes.

That was why she picked up the zither, and threw away her sword.

Luo Mingye blinked, the memories fading like retreating tides, leaving her sitting on the reed mat in the quiet bamboo forest.

Her cheeks carried a faint, rose-petal flush, her fingers resting gently upon her zither.

She raised her head, looking up at the goddess without a single trace of shame or evasion in her green eyes.

Enheduanna looked down at the mortal maiden, a soft, knowing chuckle rippling from her lips like water over smooth river stones.

”I see... for love, is it?” Enheduanna murmured gently.

The goddess took a slow, weightless step forward, her bare, luminous feet gliding inches above the timber platform.

She reached out, her fingers lightly brushing against the highest string of the zither, causing it to hum with a low, celestial vibration that echoed the steady beating of Luo Mingye’s heart.

”Love and music are twin sisters born from the same primordial breath, Mingye,” Enheduanna spoke, her voice carrying a deep, philosophical weight that resonated with the foundational laws of the cosmos. ”Mortal cultivators believe that music is merely a refined manipulation of atmospheric acoustic frequencies, just as they foolishly believe that love is merely a biological impulse or a convenient bond of mutual benefit. But they are blind to the truth.”

The goddess raised her hand, allowing a swirl of shimmering, golden harmonic glyphs to dance across her palm.

”Music is not the string, nor is it the instrument, nor is it the sound that strikes the ear. Music is the only language in existence that can bypass the rational walls of the mind to touch the naked, unshielded architecture of the soul. When you pluck a string with true intent, you are not projecting qi—you are exposing your own vulnerability, casting the purest essence of your consciousness into the void, hoping another spirit will resonate with its shape.”

Enheduanna looked deeply into Luo Mingye’s eyes, her tone turning solemn, reverent, and sharp.

”And love... love is the ultimate composition. It is the willing surrender of your own harmony to intertwine with another’s chaotic frequency. If your music is born from technique alone, it will only ever be admired by the mind. But if your music is forged from love—from the desperate desire to reach into the darkest corner of another soul and say, ’I see you, and you are not alone’—then your melody ceases to be mortal art. It becomes a divine law capable of reshaping reality itself. For there is no force in the cosmos, not even the decree of the highest gods, that can resist the pull of a heart that loves without condition.”

Luo Mingye listened in breathless awe, the goddess’s words settling into her sea of consciousness like golden seeds taking root in fertile soil.

The purpose behind every blister she had endured, every night spent weeping over broken strings in the silent courtyard, suddenly aligned into a single, radiant pillar of absolute purpose.

Then, Enheduanna withdrew her hand, her expression turning regal, magnificent, and charged with ancient, celestial authority.

”Your foundation is set, child of the mortal realm,” Enheduanna declared, her starlight robes flaring with blinding, multi-colored auroras that illuminated the entire bamboo forest. ”I consider you worthy to inherit my throne.”

Luo Mingye’s eyes widened, her mouth wide agape.

Before she can say anything, Enheduanna raised a finger, ”If you can compose an original music, born entirely from your own heart and your own comprehension... a music so profound, so enchanting, and so undeniably true that it can pull the man you love into an illusion, even for just a moment... then the first of the Twelve Divine Trials will be considered completed.”

The Twelve Divine Trials.

The words dropped into the quiet clearing with the catastrophic weight of an ancient cosmic edict.

They are the sacred, legendary trials given by gods to their chosen.

In the boundless history of the cosmos, when an ancient deity grew weary of the turning of the stars or sought to transcend into the primordial void, then they will begin to look into the lower planes to seek a vessel whose soul resonance matched their concept.

Through the Twelve Divine Trials, the chosen mortal would undergo twelve complete, grueling metamorphoses—purging their mortal karma, elevating their comprehension, and tempering their spirit to withstand the crushing gravity of the cosmos.

Once their chosen have completed them all, then their divine position can instantly be passed on, bypassing tens of thousands of years of mortal cultivation bottlenecks, and the mortal who completed them will immediately ascend to godhood, crowned as the new sovereign of that cosmic authority.

Right now, this Goddess of Music was not merely offering guidance, but was offering her throne.

Luo Mingye immediately turned serious.

The faint, girlish bashfulness that had lingered on her cheeks vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp determination that seemed carved from primeval diamond.

She knew who the man she loved was.

Shen Haoran.

A terrifying, peerless genius who possessed the Infinity Dragon God Physique, born from the most prestigious background.

He is also a monster whose mental defenses were denser than celestial meteorite, whose sea of consciousness was guarded by his will, and whose golden eyes saw through every illusion, every deception, and every spatial manipulation beneath the sky.

To pull such an impossible, untouchable man into an illusion—even for a single, fleeting second—was a task more difficult than splitting a star with a wooden hairpin.

A common melody would not even register against his mental barriers; an ordinary song would be shattered into kindling by the passive aura of his dragon core before the first note could reach his ears.

For her to complete this trial meant her music had to be absolute, it had to be so authentic, so overwhelming, and so saturated with her soul’s true essence that his pride would willingly lower its guard just to hear the whisper of her strings.

Luo Mingye straightened her spine.

Her robes settled firmly against the bamboo floor, her pale, slender hands resting upon the seven silver strings of the zither, her green eyes flashing with the incandescent fire of an awakened master.

She looked up at the Goddess of Music, bowing her head with uncompromising resolve.

”I accept the trial.”
