Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

The two weeks moved quietly.

The Kellerman submission was progressing. Patricia Wren’s updated data had been formally submitted to the committee. Jade had flagged two low-level queries on Sean’s public financial record that turned out to be routine due diligence from a firm considering a co-investment in a Vertex adjacent round — nothing requiring attention.

Max handled it.

Amara texted twice. Once about the policy brief she had finished and once about a dinner she was organizing with Patricia Wren on her next visit to the city. Both texts were the short efficient register. Both ended without requiring a response longer than two words.

Sophie texted on a Thursday.

Richard bought a new bookshelf.

For the office, said Sean.

Yes, she said. He has three bookshelves already. He does not need a fourth.

What’s he putting on it, said Sean.

He hasn’t decided yet, she said. He bought the shelf first.

He’s building capacity before he knows what he needs it for, said Sean.

A pause.

That’s very him, she said.

Yes, he said.

Sean, she said.

Yeah.

Is that good or concerning, she said.

Good, he said. People who build capacity before they know what they need it for are optimistic.

Another pause.

That’s a very charitable read, she said.

He bought a bookshelf, said Sean. Not a bunker.

She sent the laugh emoji. The only one she ever used.

Four questions left, she said. Still saving.

I know, he said.

Goodnight, she said.

Goodnight, he said.

—

Tuesday arrived.

Sean was in the café at one twenty. Kellerman notes open, coffee ordered, the specific forty-minutes-early quality of someone who had somewhere to be at two and was using the time correctly.

Nadia came in at one thirty-two.

She saw him. She ordered. She sat across from him.

”You’re earlier today,” she said.

”Same time,” he said.

”You were here at one fifty last time,” she said.

”One forty,” he said.

”I was here at one fifty-two,” she said. ”You were already in the chair.”

He held his coffee.

”Fine,” he said. ”I was here at one thirty-eight.”

She almost smiled.

”Why earlier,” she said.

”Margaret texted last night,” he said. ”She said she had the letter.”

Nadia held her coffee.

”She told you,” she said.

”She said: I have what I mentioned. I’ll give it today.” He held his coffee. ”She’s thorough.”

”She is,” said Nadia.

They sat with that for a moment.

”How is she,” he said.

”I saw her Monday for a routine check,” said Nadia. ”Good. Same as always.” She held her coffee. ”She was calm. She’s been calm since the first visit. Something settled in her.”

He held his coffee.

”Did you read it,” he said. ”The letter.”

”No,” said Nadia. ”She never offered. I never asked.” She held her cup. ”It belonged to her until it belonged to you.”

He held that.

”Yes,” he said.

”She’s been holding it for nine years,” said Nadia. ”Since Catherine died. She said she’d know when it was time.” A pause. ”She’s certain about today.”

”I know,” he said.

”How,” she said.

”The text,” he said. ”She said I have what I mentioned. She didn’t say I think I’m ready or I’ve been thinking about it. She said I have it. That’s a statement of fact, not a process.”

Nadia held her coffee.

She looked at him.

”You read a two-sentence text and extracted her psychological state from the verb choice,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”That’s either very perceptive or slightly unnerving,” she said.

”Which,” he said.

”Both,” she said.

He held his coffee.

”Nadia,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”When she gives it to me,” he said. ”Will you be in the café afterward.”

She held her cup.

”Yes,” she said. ”I’ll be here.”

”Okay,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”You don’t know what state you’ll be in when you come down,” she said. Not a question.

”No,” he said.

”You want someone there who doesn’t require anything from you,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze for a moment.

”I’ll be here,” she said again. Differently from the first time.

He nodded once.

He picked up his coffee.

He went back to the Kellerman notes.

She held her coffee.

She did not fill the silence.

At one fifty-eight he closed the notes and stood.

She looked up.

”Good luck,” she said.

”It’s not that kind of thing,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I said it anyway.”

He held her gaze briefly.

Then he went upstairs.

—

Margaret was in the waiting area.

She looked up when the elevator opened.

”Still early,” she said.

”Two minutes,” he said.

”I’ve been here twenty,” she said. ”It’s a habit.”

He sat beside her.

She had her handbag on her lap. Her hands were folded over it. She was wearing the coat she’d had both previous visits, dark blue, practical. Her white hair precise and tidy.

She looked at the tree in the courtyard.

He looked at it too.

”I slept badly last night,” she said.

”Because of the letter,” he said.

”Because of everything,” she said. ”The letter. You. Nine years of holding something and then deciding to let it go.” She held the handbag. ”I wasn’t sad. I just couldn’t sleep.”

”What did you do,” he said.

”Made tea and read,” she said. ”The book with the ending we argued about.”

”Did it change your read,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”I was still right.”

”Yes,” he said.

She almost smiled.

The clinic door opened. The nurse appeared with the tablet.

”Ten minutes,” said Margaret. She stood. She looked at him. ”Wait here.”

She went in.

He looked at the tree.

He thought about a woman who had raised Catherine, who had held a letter for nine years, who couldn’t sleep the night before she gave it away. Who made tea and read the book with the ending she’d argued about and who was still right.

He held the tree.

—

She came out at two thirty.

The clinic had run exactly on time. She sat beside him and opened her handbag.

She took out an envelope.
