Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Sean held her gaze.

”That’s three weeks from when the three-way call happened,” he said.

”I know,” said Kellerman. ”I’ve been in academic policy work for twenty years. Three weeks is extraordinary.”

”The architecture was right this time,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. ”It was.” She picked up her pen. ”I want to add the Wren case to the fellowship submission as a live example. With permissions.”

”You already have Amara’s permission,” he said. ”I’ll confirm Wren’s directly.”

”Send me the confirmation,” she said. ”And the Voss referral document if you can get it.”

”I’ll have both by Thursday,” he said.

She made a note.

”Monday next week,” she said. ”Usual time.”

He stood.

”Professor Kellerman,” he said.

She looked up.

”The committee review,” he said. ”How long until the Wren analysis becomes implemented policy.”

She held her pen.

”Optimistically,” she said. ”Six months. Realistically, a year. Possibly longer.” She held his gaze. ”That’s not a failure of the architecture. That’s how implementation timelines work once the referral is in the right channel.”

”I know,” he said. ”I wanted the number.”

”Why,” she said.

”Because Patricia Wren has been tracking the gap every quarter for five years,” he said. ”She should know how many more quarters she’ll be tracking it.”

Kellerman held her pen.

She looked at him for a moment.

”Tell her a year,” she said. ”It might be less. It won’t be more.”

He nodded.

He left.

====

That evening he sat at his desk and looked at his phone.

He had four texts to send.

He sent the first to Patricia Wren.

The committee agreed to formal review. Implementation timeline is approximately one year. You can stop tracking and start counting down.

She replied forty minutes later.

I’m going to keep tracking. Old habits. A pause. But thank you for the countdown. I’ll start one.

He sent the second to Amara.

Kellerman wants to include the Wren case in the fellowship submission as a live example. She needs your permission formally and the Voss referral document.

Amara replied in three minutes.

Permission confirmed. I’ll get the Voss document by tomorrow morning.

Efficient, he said.

Always, she said.

He sent the third to Max.

Jade and I talked about the Crane situation. The file is closed. She’s watching. If anything changes in his communication pattern I want to know.

Already watching, said Max. She called me this morning about the monitoring parameters. She’s precise.

Yes, said Sean.

She and I are meeting Tuesday, said Max. She’s going to walk me through her methodology.

Good, said Sean.

Sean, said Max.

Yeah.

The team is getting bigger, said Max.

Yes, said Sean.

Is that intentional, said Max.

Sean held his phone.

He thought about that.

The work is getting bigger, he said. The team is responding to that.

That’s either reassuring or concerning, said Max.

Which, said Sean.

Both, said Max.

Yes, said Sean. Both.

He sent the fourth text.

To Sophie.

How is Richard.

She replied in six minutes.

He had a check-up last week. Same as before. No changes. A pause. He reorganized his office again. Third time this month. I’ve been counting.

He organizes when he’s processing something, said Sean.

Yes, said Sophie. I’ve noticed that. A pause. Sean.

Yeah.

I still have five questions, she said. I’m still saving them.

I know, he said.

But I want you to know I could ask them now if I needed to, she said. They’re not being saved because I’m scared to ask. They’re being saved for the right moment.

I know, he said.

Okay, she said. Just wanted you to know.

I know, he said again.

You say that a lot, she said.

Because it’s usually true, he said.

That’s annoying, she said.

Yes, he said. I imagine it is.

She sent a brief laugh emoji. The only emoji she had ever sent him.

He put his phone down.

He looked at his desk.

The Threat Arc was closed. Crane’s file was filed away on a desk fourteen floors up and three miles east and would stay there kept correctly. Jade was on Monday. Max and Jade were on Tuesday. The Kellerman submission was building. Patricia Wren had a countdown. Rachel Voss had a referral in the right channel.

Sophie had five questions saved and wasn’t scared to ask them.

Richard was reorganizing his office for the third time this month which was Richard being Richard.

Everything in motion.

Everything building toward what it was building toward.

His phone buzzed.

A text from a number he recognized.

Makima.

Are you coming down tonight.

He looked at the text.

He looked at his desk.

He stood up.

Yes, he texted. Five minutes.

Tea is on, she said.

He went downstairs.

The letters had been going for four months.

Sean had written eleven. Margaret Walsh had written nine. The gap was because his were longer and hers arrived faster — she wrote within two days of receiving his, every time, the specific reliability of someone who had decided that this correspondence mattered and was not going to treat it like something that could wait.

He had read each of hers three times.

Not for information. For the quality of her. The specific voice that came through on paper, which was direct and warm and occasionally dry in a way that reminded him of something he couldn’t fully name.

The eleventh exchange had ended with her writing:

I think it’s time we stopped writing and started talking. If you’re ready, I am. I’ve been ready since the third letter, but I didn’t want to rush you. You can tell me when.

He had read that three times too.

He had written back.

Tuesday. The hospital clinic. I checked the schedule. You have an appointment at two. I’ll be there when you come out.

She had replied in one day.

I’ll be there. I’ll be the small one.

Tuesday morning.

Sean had a nine AM lecture, a Kellerman email to respond to, and a text from Jade confirming she and Max had met and the Tuesday session had gone well.
