Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Then she looked back at him.

”Most people ask,” she said. ”What do you do. And you say neurologist. And they nod and move on.”

”I don’t move on,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”You don’t.” She held his gaze. ”What else did you read.”

”The three most cited papers in movement disorder pathway research from the last five years,” he said. ”And one from 2019 that Max flagged as the foundational work in communication gap modeling.”

”Max,” she said.

”Someone who works with me,” he said. ”He finds things.”

”He found neurological research papers for you,” she said.

”I asked him to find the most relevant recent work in movement disorder pathway research,” he said. ”He found it in forty minutes.”

She held her fork.

”Max is very efficient,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Is he also eighteen,” she said.

”No,” he said. ”He’s older.”

She held him in the medical read.

”You’re eighteen years old,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you run a research framework and have a researcher on retainer and a driver and you’re building a fellowship submission at a university you’re enrolled in as a freshman,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you spent a week reading neurological research papers because you were having dinner with me,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah.”

”What are you,” she said.

He held her gaze.

Not the hostile version of the question. The genuine one. The medical read trying to categorize something it didn’t have a category for.

”Someone who pays attention,” he said.

”To everything,” she said.

”To what matters,” he said.

”How do you decide what matters,” she said.

”I don’t,” he said. ”It’s apparent.”

She held that.

He held her gaze.

”That’s not a complete answer,” she said.

”No,” he said. ”But it’s true.”

She held her fork.

She looked at her plate.

She ate.

He ate.

The restaurant moved around them.

After a while she said: ”The 2019 paper. The foundational work in communication gap modeling. What did you think of the third section.”

”The mechanism identification was correct,” he said. ”The intervention model was too conservative. They found the right problem and proposed a solution that assumed they had less leverage over the pathway than they actually had.”

She held her fork.

”That’s the exact criticism that’s been in the field for five years,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”I read the responses.”

”In one week,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”What do you do with all of it,” she said. ”Everything you read. Everything you retain.”

”Use it,” he said.

”For what,” she said.

”For making the right decision at the right time,” he said. ”For seeing what the situation actually requires.”

She held her fork.

She looked at him.

”The architecture failure,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”You use what you know to find the right architecture around things that aren’t working,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”My work is the same,” she said. ”Find the pathway failure. Fix the architecture.”

”Yes,” he said.

”Different domain,” she said.

”Same structure,” he said.

She held that.

She looked at her plate.

She finished her food.

He finished his.

The server cleared the plates.

She held her water glass and looked at the room and then looked back at him.

”Margaret talks about Catherine,” she said. ”At appointments. When something reminds her.”

”Yes,” he said.

”She says Catherine was precise,” said Nadia. ”That she had a way of finding the exact right word for something and using it without ceremony. She’d say: this is the word. And it would be.”

He held his water glass.

”The word for the gap between correct work and the pathway failure,” he said.

”Architecture,” said Nadia.

”Yes,” he said.

She held her glass.

”That’s the precise word,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s why I use it.”

She held his gaze.

”She’d have liked that,” said Nadia.

He held his water glass.

He said nothing.

She looked at the table.

”I’m sorry,” she said. ”That was presumptuous.”

”No,” he said. ”It’s what Margaret said too. Different words. Same thing.”

Nadia held her glass.

”She told you something about Catherine at the visits,” she said.

”The laugh she caught and held,” he said. ”The sweet peas. The photograph.”

”She gave you the photograph,” said Nadia.

”Yes,” he said. ”The second visit.”

Nadia held her glass.

”She’s had that photograph for twenty-nine years,” she said. ”She showed it to me once. At an appointment two years ago. She was having a difficult week.” A pause. ”She said it was the one where Catherine looked most like herself.”

He held his glass.

”Yes,” he said. ”She does.”

Nadia held his gaze.

She held it for a moment with the full version of her attention, the one that was reading something carefully.

”You’re going to keep seeing her,” she said. Not a question.

”Yes,” he said. ”Every two weeks. For as long as she wants.”

”She’ll want it for a long time,” said Nadia.

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Third visit,” she said. ”She mentioned she has a letter she wants to give you.”

He held his glass.

”Catherine’s letter,” he said.

”She’s been holding it for nine years,” said Nadia. ”She only mentioned it to me once. She said she’d know when it was time to pass it on.” A pause. ”I think she’ll know at the third visit.”

He held his water glass.

He looked at it.

”Nadia,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”Thank you,” he said. ”For being the person she told things to.”

She held his gaze.

”I didn’t choose that,” she said. ”She chose it. I just didn’t refuse it.”

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s the thank you.”

She held his gaze for a moment.

Then she looked at the table.

”The restaurant,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”I was right,” she said. ”You appreciate it properly.”

”The commitment to one thing done well,” he said. ”Yes.”

”Most people want more options,” she said.

”Options mean you haven’t decided what matters yet,” he said.

She held that.

”That’s either very focused or very inflexible,” she said.

”Which do you think,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Focused,” she said. ”Because you’re sitting here having read three years of movement disorder research in one week and you’re using it correctly.”

”Inflexibility doesn’t read,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”It doesn’t.”

He paid.

[$71,745,899]

[$180 spent — dinner for two]

[Balance: $71,565,899]

[$360 received — 2x baseline, Nadia not yet a bond slot]

[New Balance: $71,566,259]

Outside the restaurant the Friday evening was doing what Friday evenings did.

They stood on the pavement.

Nadia pulled her jacket on.

She looked at him.

”The third visit,” she said. ”Two weeks.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I’ll be in the café,” she said. ”I usually come down when Margaret has her appointment. I’ll be there.”

”I know,” he said.

”You expected that,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Goodnight Sean,” she said.

”Goodnight Nadia,” he said.

She walked.

He watched her go.

He texted James.

James appeared in two minutes.

He got in.

He held the inside pocket where the photograph was.

He thought about sweet peas and the exact right word and someone who had been the person Margaret told things to for four years without refusing it.

He thought about the letter.

Two weeks.

He let the drive be the drive.
