Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Reyes was not someone who used language like that without having run the numbers.

He picked up his phone and called her.

She answered on the second ring.

”I read it,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”You’re calling at seven AM.”

”The fourth marker,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”How confident are you,” he said.

”In the marker as a diagnostic finding,” she said. ”Very. The pattern is clear and it’s consistent across every primary relationship in the file. There are no exceptions.” A pause. ”In the implication of the marker — that what explains it is what I called systemic foreknowledge — I’m confident in the framework. I’m not confident in what the mechanism is.”

”Because the mechanism isn’t in the file,” said Victor.

”Because the mechanism is not accessible through conventional behavioral analysis,” said Reyes. ”I can tell you what the behavioral signature of the mechanism looks like. I cannot tell you what the mechanism is.”

Victor held his phone.

”So the file is complete,” he said. ”And the explanation is still missing.”

”The conventional explanation is missing,” said Reyes. ”Yes.” A pause. ”Victor, in twenty-two years you have found the prosaic truth underneath every unusual pattern you have looked at. This is the first file I have worked on with you where the prosaic truth is not there.”

Victor looked at his notes.

”What do you recommend,” he said.

Reyes was quiet for a moment.

”I think you should close the file,” she said. ”Not because you’re wrong about what you found. Because continuing to look through conventional means will not produce the missing explanation. You’ve reached the limit of the methodology.”

”I’ve never left a file open,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”But leaving a file open because the explanation is missing is different from leaving a file open because you haven’t looked hard enough.” A pause. ”You’ve looked. The explanation isn’t there to be found this way.”

Victor looked at his printed copy.

He looked at the margin notes he had made across two careful readings.

”Thank you Carol,” he said.

”Send me what you find,” she said. ”If you find it.”

”I will,” he said.

The call ended.

He looked at the file.

He looked at the word foreknowledge in the section called Mechanism.

He picked up his pen.

He was about to write something in the margin.

His phone buzzed.

A text from a number he did not recognize.

Mr. Crane. I think we should meet. You’ve been looking at a picture for three weeks and you’ve found the limit of what it can show you. I can give you something more useful than the rest of the picture. — Sean Miller.

Victor looked at that text for a long time.

Then he looked at the file on his desk.

Then he looked at the text again.

He typed back.

When.

The reply came in under thirty seconds.

Today. Eleven AM. The coffee place on Mercer Street, two buildings south of your office. I’ll be there.

Victor held his phone.

He thought about a text that arrived eleven minutes after Carol Reyes’s call had ended.

He thought about what the word foreknowledge meant if it was literally rather than metaphorically true.

He typed: I’ll be there.

====

Sean texted Max at nine fifteen.

I’m meeting Crane at eleven. Coffee place on Mercer Street.

Max replied immediately.

Today.

Yes, said Sean.

Reyes finished the preliminary this morning, said Max. I was going to call you.

I know, said Sean. I texted him before you called.

A pause from Max.

How did you know she’d finished, said Max.

Crane called her at seven, said Sean. That’s the call he makes when something has arrived that he needs to process with her in real time. He made it within ninety minutes of receiving the preliminary.

You were watching his communication pattern, said Max.

You were watching his communication pattern, said Sean. You told me about it Tuesday. He calls Reyes in the early morning when something matters. He called her at seven.

I sent you that data three days ago, said Max.

I filed it, said Sean.

A pause.

What are you going to say to him, said Max.

One true thing, said Sean.

The thing you wrote on Wednesday, said Max.

Yes, he said.

You’re not going to tell me what it is, said Max.

Not yet, said Sean.

After, said Max.

After, said Sean.

Be careful, said Max. He’s not Hale.

I know, said Sean. That’s why the conversation is different.

He put his phone down.

He sat at his desk for a while.

He thought about what he had written on Wednesday.

He thought about what it meant to say it to someone who had found the limit of conventional means.

He thought about the fourth marker and extremely low in Carol Reyes’s careful language.

At ten forty he got up and put his jacket on and left.

=====

The coffee place on Mercer Street was two buildings south of the address Max had for Crane’s office. Not the kind of place that had been there for fifteen years. The kind that had opened eight months ago and was still finding its rhythm but had good coffee while it was finding it.

Sean arrived at ten fifty-five.

He ordered.

He sat at the table nearest the window.

At eleven exactly the door opened.

Victor Crane was medium height, lean, gray at the temples. The specific quality of someone who processed everything and reacted to almost nothing visibly. He looked at the room when he came in. Not the social scan. The professional one. Entry points, occupants, exits. It took him two seconds and was completely invisible to anyone who did not know what to look for.

His eyes found Sean.

He held the look for a moment.

Then he walked to the table and sat down.

He looked at Sean the way he looked at things, which was completely and without the social adjustment that most people applied when sitting down with an eighteen-year-old.

”You’re younger than the file,” he said.
