Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

James was at the curb at eight twelve.

He opened the door and said good morning to Mia with the warm professional courtesy he reserved for people Sean actually liked and she thanked him with the direct simplicity that was entirely hers.

They drove.

The city was doing its Sunday morning things, the particular version of it that existed on weekends, slower and less intentional than weekdays.

Mia looked out the window.

”The oversight body called again Friday,” she said. ”About the hospital pipeline policy paper. They want Amara to present formally. In front of the full review committee.”

”That’s significant,” he said.

”She’s apparently already prepared a presentation,” said Mia. ”Max texted me about it. He said she built thirty-seven slides and reorganized his bookshelf by subject while she was doing it.”

”What did the bookshelf reorganization communicate,” said Sean.

”That she was nervous,” said Mia. ”He said she only reorganizes things when she’s processing emotion. The first time was when the surgery was confirmed. The second time was when the oversight body first called.” She paused. ”The bookshelf is apparently extremely well organized now.”

Sean looked at the city.

’She reorganizes toward purpose,’ Makima had said.

”What does Max think about the presentation,” he said.

”He said she rehearsed it twice at six AM,” said Mia. ”In front of him. He said she had notes for his feedback and he was barely awake and she still had notes.”

”She sounds like someone who should be presenting to oversight committees,” said Sean.

”She sounds like someone who’s been waiting to,” said Mia.

She said it quietly. Not with envy. With the specific understanding of someone who knew what it felt like to have the right thing to say and nowhere to say it.

James pulled onto Mia’s street.

The building was the kind of building that existed on the specific street she’d described once, not her dream building, just where she was while she figured out what came next. She’d said it mattered less than she’d thought now that she was actually choosing what came next.

The car stopped.

She picked up her bag.

At the door she paused with her hand on the handle and looked at him.

The sharp dark eyes. The hair still down.

”You still owe me a response,” she said.

He looked at her. ”Which question.”

”The one you didn’t answer directly,” she said. ”At dinner. When I asked why you agreed to all of it.”

”I answered it,” he said.

”You answered the surface version,” she said. ”I want the actual version.”

He held her gaze.

”That one takes more than breakfast,” he said.

She considered that. ”Fine,” she said. ”I’ll collect later.”

”I know you will,” he said.

She opened the door and got out and adjusted her jacket with the precise efficiency she adjusted everything and looked at him through the open door for one moment.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah.”

”Thank you,” she said. ”For last night. The dinner specifically. The rest you already know.”

He looked at her.

”The soup was good,” he said.

She almost smiled. The real one arrived for half a second before she managed it away.

”It was exceptional,” she said. ”I’d been worried about the sodium content.”

She closed the door.

He watched the building entrance close behind her.

James said nothing for a long moment. Then: ”The Osei restaurant, sir?”

”Yes,” said Sean. ”The Osei restaurant.”

================

Amara had selected a place called Ferrante’s.

Not because it was the most expensive restaurant available. Because she had cross-referenced four review sources, two food publications, and a blog post by a former Michelin inspector, and Ferrante’s had the highest aggregate score for quality per dollar in the Italian category within a two mile radius of Max’s apartment.

Sean knew this because Max had told him on Thursday.

She showed me the spreadsheet, Max had texted. She made a spreadsheet. For a dinner.

Of course she did, Sean had replied.

Seven tabs, said Max. Seven.

He arrived at seven twenty-eight.

Two minutes early by his own standard. Eight minutes early by the seven thirty he’d been told.

He walked in.

The host looked up. ”Reservation?”

”Osei,” said Sean.

”Of course.” The host led him toward the back of the restaurant. ”The rest of your party is already seated.”

The rest of his party.

Singular.

He came around the corner and saw the table Amara had reserved and saw Amara at it and did not see Max.

She looked up when he arrived.

She was twenty-four. Medium height, dark skin, black natural hair pulled back with the practical precision of someone who had decided hair management should not consume time she could spend on other things. Sharp eyes behind thin-framed glasses that she adjusted when she looked up. She was wearing something simple and considered, the specific choice of someone who had thought about the occasion without overdoing the thinking.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

She said, without preamble and without standing: ”Max had a thing. I told him seven. I told you seven thirty. He thinks dinner is at eight.”

Sean looked at her.

She looked back with the complete composure of someone who had made a decision and was not going to second guess it.

”That’s not an accident,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”Sit down. I have questions.”

—--------------------

He sat.

The waiter appeared and Sean ordered water and Amara was already looking at her phone with the specific focus of someone consulting something she’d prepared in advance.

”You have a list,” he said.

”Eight questions,” she said. ”I ranked them by priority and cross-referenced for redundancy. Some questions contain the answer to other questions if you answer them correctly, so I eliminated those.” She looked up. ”We probably have time for six before Max arrives.”

”You eliminated the redundant ones,” said Sean.

”Obviously,” she said. ”Redundant questions waste time and signal poor preparation.”

He held her gaze.

She held his.

’She’s completely serious,’ he thought. ’She rehearsed this too. But differently from how Mia rehearsed things. Mia rehearsed to manage nerves. Amara rehearsed because she wanted the conversation to be efficient.’
