Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Checkout was at eleven.

Olivia packed with the efficient precision that was hers in every context, everything into the bag in a specific order that she clearly always used, the kind of system that had developed through years of travel that was non-negotiable regardless of context.

Sean called James at ten forty.

At the entrance in fifteen minutes, James replied. The specific professional brevity that meant he had already been moving toward the hotel before Sean texted.

They walked through the lobby together, Olivia with her bag and her jacket and her slightly carousel-adjacent hair that she hadn’t done anything differently with, and through the entrance and into the Sunday morning outside.

James was at the curb.

He opened Olivia’s door.

”Good morning Ms. Olivia,” said James.

”Good morning James,” said Olivia. ”Thank you for yesterday.”

”It was my pleasure,” said James, with the specific warmth he reserved for people who said thank you the genuine way rather than the automatic way.

They got in.

Olivia settled against Sean’s shoulder before the car was even moving, the specific immediate comfort of someone who had established a position and intended to stay in it for the duration.

James pulled out into the Sunday morning road.

The resort district moved past the windows and then the transition zone between the resort and the city and then the city itself, arriving back around them in the familiar specific way of home.

Olivia was quiet for most of the drive.

Not the processing quiet. The settled quiet. The specific version that meant everything was exactly where it should be and she didn’t need to do anything about it.

At some point she said, without lifting her head from his shoulder, ”Number three.”

”What about it,” he said.

”I’m already thinking about it,” she said.

”What are you thinking,” he said.

”Nothing that involves a color-coded map,” she said.

”That’s interesting,” he said.

”The unplanned part was better,” she said. ”I’m learning from that.”

He looked out the window at the city.

”What does that look like,” he said. ”A regular evening without a plan.”

”I don’t know yet,” she said. ”That’s the point.”

James pulled up to the building at twelve forty-seven.

He opened Olivia’s door.

She stepped out and turned and looked at Sean through the open car door, the Sunday afternoon around her, her hair still exactly as it had been all morning.

”Thank you,” she said. ”For yesterday. All of it.”

”You planned it,” he said.

”You let me have the reveal,” she said.

He looked at her.

She looked back.

Then she stepped forward and kissed him briefly, the Sunday version, warm and simple.

”Call me tonight,” she said.

”I will,” he said.

She walked toward the building entrance, James holding the door, and just before she went through she looked back once.

The real smile. Small and entirely genuine.

Then she was inside.

Sean sat back in the car.

”Home sir,” said James. Not a question.

”Home,” said Sean.

In the car he checked his phone.

A text from Clara sent at nine forty-seven AM.

The cap table notes. I have three questions about the second scenario assumptions. Not urgent. Monday prep call will cover them.

He looked at that.

Nine forty-seven Sunday morning. Which meant she’d been working on the analysis since at least nine and probably earlier.

He typed back.

Send the questions now. I’ll answer them today.

She replied in four minutes.

Are you sure. It’s Sunday.

Yes, he said.

Okay, she said. Then three questions arrived in sequence, each precise and specific and going directly to the assumptions worth examining.

He read them.

Then he opened the cap table document and spent forty minutes on the drive home and the first hour at his desk working through proper answers to all three.

He sent them at two fifteen.

She replied at two twenty-two.

These are good. The third answer changes my read on the second scenario significantly. A pause. Thank you for doing this on a Sunday.

You were working on Sunday, he said.

I always work on Sunday, she said. You were supposed to be recovering from Saturday.

I recovered, he said.

A longer pause.

How was Saturday, she said.

He looked at that question for a moment.

Good, he said. Very good.

Good, she said. Simply. And then: Monday. Seven thirty.

Seven thirty, he said.

He put his phone down and looked at his desk and the whiteboard with its three lines and the fourth one underneath.

Three weeks.

He made coffee and went downstairs.

Makima was in the building office with the maintenance schedule, which was where she was most Sunday afternoons.

She looked up when he came in.

”Good weekend,” she said.

”Very good,” he said.

”Disneyland,” she said.

He looked at her. ”How.”

”Olivia texted me this morning,” she said. ”She said thank you for suggesting it.”

”You suggested it,” he said.

”I didn’t suggest it,” said Makima. ”She asked me what you’d never done that most people have done and I mentioned some things and she made her own decisions.”

Sean looked at her.

”The carousel,” she said, with the specific expression of someone who had just seen something in his face. ”She made you go on the carousel.”

”She didn’t make me,” he said.

”But you went,” said Makima.

”Yes,” he said.

She held her pen and looked at him with the warm specific expression of someone who had watched a thing develop from the beginning and was now seeing it at a point considerably further along.

”Good,” she said. Simply.

She went back to the maintenance schedule.

He sat in the chair across from her desk and drank his coffee and let the Sunday afternoon be what Sunday afternoons were, quiet and without urgency, the week not yet arrived.

The Next Day

Seven fifteen.

Sean was at his desk with coffee when Clara called.

Not at seven thirty. Seven fifteen. Which meant she’d been up and working for a while before the agreed time and had decided fifteen minutes early was when the prep call needed to start.

He answered.

”You’re early,” he said.

”I reviewed the scenario three assumptions you sent yesterday,” she said. ”I have additional thoughts. We need fifteen extra minutes before Fischer.”

”That’s why you called at seven fifteen,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”You could have told me last night you wanted to start earlier,” he said.
