Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”I printed it Thursday,” she said. ”I made notes.”

He looked at the map over her shoulder. There were notes. Color coded.

”Olivia,” he said.

”Yes,” she said, still looking at the map.

”You printed and annotated a theme park map,” he said.

”The order matters,” she said. ”You want to do the most popular things first before the crowds build. The fantasy section in the morning, the adventure section before lunch, the parade route needs to be understood in advance—”

”Olivia,” he said.

She looked up.

He was smiling.

She looked at him and then at the map and then back at him.

”Kwon is right isn’t he,” she said.

”Kwon is not right,” he said. ”The map is completely correct. I’m smiling because you printed it Thursday and made color coded notes and it’s the most you thing I’ve ever seen.”

She held his gaze for a moment.

Then she looked back at the map with the expression of someone who had decided to own it.

”The fantasy section first,” she said. ”Then the castle. Then lunch at the place I’ve already identified. Then the adventure section. Then the parade. Then we figure out the evening.”

”Lead the way,” he said.

She folded the map along lines she’d clearly pre-designated and put it back in her pocket and took his hand and walked through the entrance gates into the park.

—-----

The fantasy section was exactly what the name suggested.

Olivia walked through it with the specific energy of someone who had been here before and was seeing it through the specific lens of being here with someone who hadn’t. She watched him look at things. Not impatiently. The genuine attention of someone who wanted to know what he thought about what he was seeing.

”What do you actually think,” she said, after they’d been walking for ten minutes.

”It’s very thorough,” he said.

She laughed. ”Thorough.”

”The architecture is internally consistent,” he said. ”Most places like this have surface theming and then the infrastructure shows through. This is more committed.”

”You’re analyzing a theme park,” she said.

”You asked what I thought,” he said.

”I expected something more like it’s magical or I feel like a child,” she said.

”Do you want me to say that,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”I want you to say what’s actually true.” She looked at the castle visible at the end of the main street. ”What’s actually true.”

He looked at her.

”That it’s a place designed to make people feel something specific,” he said. ”And that it’s working, not because the architecture is fooling me but because you’re the person I’m walking through it with.”

She looked at him.

The real smile arrived.

”That’s the right answer,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

She squeezed his hand and pulled him toward the castle.

—------------

The castle was at the center of everything.

They stood in front of it and Olivia looked at it with the expression she’d had at the cinema, the returning-to-something quality of someone in a place that had a specific personal history.

”My mother brought me here when I was seven,” she said. ”First time. She saved for six months to do it.” She looked at the castle. ”She made me wear this ridiculous dress. Pink with too many layers. I hated it and I wore it anyway because I could tell how much it mattered to her that I wore it.”

”Did you tell her you hated it,” he said.

”Not until I was fourteen,” she said. ”She laughed for about five minutes. She said she knew the whole time but the photo was worth it.” She paused. ”She has the photo. It’s on the wall of her house. Me in the pink dress in front of this castle looking simultaneously thrilled to be here and deeply unhappy about the dress.”

He looked at the castle.

”Your mother sounds like someone worth knowing,” he said.

”She’s the best person I know,” said Olivia. ”After Makima.” She looked at him. ”And you.”

He held her gaze.

She looked back with everything that had accumulated since a freshman party and had kept accumulating through showcases and contracts and Paris and a cinema with forty seats and a film from 1987 and last Saturday in his apartment.

”Come on,” she said. ”The rides are this way.”

—----------

They went on four things in the first two hours.

Olivia approached each one with the map quality, the sequencing, the specific logic of the color-coded notes. Sean let her lead because she was right about the order and because watching her be right about the order with the slight smugness of someone who had planned correctly was its own kind of pleasant.

On the third one, a dark ride through something fantastical and deliberately disorienting, she grabbed his arm at a specific moment and then immediately looked at whether he’d noticed.

He’d noticed.

”That one was unexpected,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”Was it the same unexpected as when you were seven.”

She thought about it. ”Similar category. Different experience.” She still had his arm. Neither of them acknowledged this. ”When I was seven it was purely the surprise. Now it’s.” She paused.

”What,” he said.

”I know it’s coming,” she said. ”I’ve been on it before. But it surprised me anyway.” She looked at him. ”Some things keep surprising you even after you know they’re there.”

He looked at her.

”Yes,” he said. ”They do.”

She held his arm for the rest of the ride.

=====================

Lunch was at the place she’d identified on the map, a restaurant inside the park that had the specific quality of somewhere that took itself seriously within a context that generally didn’t require it. Actual food rather than theme park food. The distinction mattered to Olivia and she’d done the research.

They sat across from each other and she looked at her menu with the same four second focus she gave all menus and put it down.
