Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Margaux Devlin called on a Thursday.

Sean was in the library when his phone buzzed, at a table near the back that had become his default thinking spot, his economics notes open beside a cap table projection for the Vertex funding round that Clara had sent Tuesday evening with the note: Fischer’s revised number. Your thoughts by Friday.

He stepped into the corridor.

”Mr. Miller.” Margaux’s voice was the same as the first meeting. No preamble, no warmup. Just the fact she was calling immediately communicated that something had resolved. ”Anthony Ruiz accepted a plea agreement this morning.”

Sean leaned against the corridor wall.

”What does it cover,” he said.

”Fraud charges, assault charges including the documented incident in the withdrawn report, and a separate count related to intimidation of a witness,” said Margaux. ”The witness intimidation count was something my investigator found in the week after filing. Three text messages sent to Rebecca Torres in the days immediately after she withdrew the report. Explicit. Threatening.” A pause. ”He made my job easier. They always do.”

”What’s the sentence,” said Sean.

”Fourteen months with possibility of parole at ten,” she said. ”Plus a restraining order, mandatory counselling, and a formal record that will follow him when he applies for anything requiring a background check for the rest of his professional life.” Another pause. ”It’s not maximum. I want you to understand that. With more time and a trial we could have pushed harder. But Rebecca Torres didn’t want to testify and I respect that and the plea agreement still closes the door completely.”

”It’s enough,” said Sean.

”It’s sufficient,” said Margaux, which from her was not the same as enough and he understood the distinction. ”One more thing.”

”What,” said Sean.

”He cried,” she said. ”In the room when he accepted the plea. Full tears. The specific kind that show up when someone has spent a long time believing that the rules don’t actually apply to them.” A pause. ”I mention it only because I find it notable. Not because it changes anything.”

Sean looked at the corridor ceiling.

”Did it change anything for you,” he said.

”No,” said Margaux. ”My job was to make sure the rules applied. They applied. Whatever he feels about that is his own matter.” She paused again, and something shifted slightly in the professional directness of her voice. ”You funded this case. You found the right people and you put them in the same room with the right documentation and you didn’t try to manage the process once it was running. That’s unusual. Most people who fund something want to steer it.”

”You know how to steer it better than I do,” said Sean.

”Yes,” said Margaux. ”I’m aware of that. What I’m saying is that you seemed to know it too.” A pause. ”That’s what I’m noting.”

”Thank you,” said Sean.

”Final billing will come through Elena’s office,” said Margaux. ”It’ll be under the original retainer ceiling. He folded faster than I modeled.”

”You said he would,” said Sean.

”I said men like him usually do,” she said. ”I don’t model certainties. I model probabilities.” A slight pause. ”This one came in at the higher end.”

She ended the call without a goodbye, which was entirely consistent with everything he’d understood about her from the first meeting.

He stood in the corridor for a moment.

Then he texted Max.

It’s done. Plea accepted this morning. Fourteen months.

Max’s reply came back in four minutes. Not immediately, which meant he’d had a reaction that required a moment before he typed.

Good. Then: Did Margaux say anything specific.

She said he cried, Sean replied.

A pause. Then: Noted. And then after a longer pause: Amara says when the legal things are fully closed she wants to go out for dinner. All of us. She’s apparently been planning it since Tuesday and has already selected the restaurant.

Tell her yes, said Sean.

She’ll be very smug about this, said Max. Just so you know.

She’s earned it, said Sean.

She has, Max agreed. She absolutely has.

He told Olivia in the car after his afternoon lecture, James driving, the city doing its Thursday things outside.

Not the formal version. Just how it had happened. The call. What Margaux said. The specific detail about the tears that he’d included because she would want the full picture and because she always knew when he was leaving something out.

Olivia listened without interrupting, which wasn’t always her default mode, which meant she was taking it seriously.

When he finished she was quiet for a moment.

”Fourteen months,” she said.

”With parole possibility at ten,” he said.

”Is that enough,” she said. The same question he’d been asked in different forms since Monday.

”I don’t think enough is a number that exists for something like this,” he said. ”What exists is that he’s in the system and on record and the next person he might have done this to has a slightly safer path because of what’s documented.” He paused. ”That’s what’s real.”

She thought about that. ”That’s a very unsatisfying answer.”

”Yes,” he said.

”But it’s the true one,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked out her window at the passing city. ”The welfare person at Rebecca’s school. Do they follow up with people after the immediate crisis point.”

Sean looked at her.

”I don’t know specifically,” he said. ”Why.”

”Because someone should check,” said Olivia. ”Not you. Not in a way that involves you. But someone.” She turned from the window. ”She doesn’t have a good support structure from what you’ve described. Her circle is the circle that watched Anthony operate in it. Those people are going to have complicated reactions to today’s news and she’s going to be in the middle of that.” She paused. ”That’s a hard place to be.”

Sean looked at her.

”You’ve been thinking about her,” he said.

”She was trying to manipulate you on Friday,” said Olivia. ”I know that. I also know that someone was systematically making sure she couldn’t trust her own judgment for months before that.” She held his gaze. ”Both things are true. You said that yourself about something else once.”
