American Football: King of the Bay Area

One by one, all the games of Week 3 of the regular season came to a close.

For the San Francisco 49ers fans, the team’s victory over the Cincinnati Bengals—their first away game win of the season—extended their streak to three straight wins! It was a celebration, a festival of joy so wonderful it felt surreal!

Who would have thought that the San Francisco 49ers, a team that started last year with a five-game losing streak and then lost all four of their preseason games this year, would kick off the regular season with a dominant three-game winning streak?

During this year’s offseason, the San Francisco 49ers underwent a massive house cleaning. The entire organization, from top to bottom, inside and out, replaced nearly half the team. After some painful soul-searching, they gathered their strength, hoping for a complete transformation and a fresh start.

Situations like this are not uncommon in the league. Some teams successfully make a comeback, while others remain stuck in a slump. The reason the NFL is so exciting—and why the Pittsburgh Steelers hold the record for the most Super Bowl wins with just six—is that the teams are all incredibly close in skill. A team that was tanking last year might, through a smart draft and shrewd trades in the offseason, transform into a championship contender this year.

The beauty of strategy, which can overcome raw physical talent, has become the most crucial element in football. This is why the quarterback position receives so much attention.

It now seems the San Francisco 49ers are on the right track. At least, that’s how it looks at the end of Week 3.

After three weeks of play, only four teams remained undefeated: the Buffalo Bills, the Green Bay Packers, the Detroit Lions, and the San Francisco 49ers.

The reigning champions, the Green Bay Packers, looked unstoppable, tearing through their opponents and showcasing their formidable form. Their division rivals, the Detroit Lions, showed no weakness either, keeping pace by defeating the Minnesota Vikings in overtime this week to secure their own three-game winning streak.

Additionally, the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots, both of whom had won their first two games, faced off this week in a rivalry matchup. In the end, the Bills eked out a victory at home with a field goal, extending their undefeated record.

Finally, there were the San Francisco 49ers. Led by undrafted rookie quarterback Lu Ke, the 49ers defeated another number fourteen, rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, in a rookie showdown to pocket their third victory.

In fact, of these four undefeated teams, three had abysmal performances last year.

The Buffalo Bills had a record of four wins and twelve losses, the Detroit Lions were six and ten, and the San Francisco 49ers were also six and ten. In other words, with the exception of the Green Bay Packers, the other three teams were classic examples of underdogs turning the tables, playing at an astonishing level through the first three weeks of the 2011 regular season.

This is the NFL.

Among them, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers was playing at a peak level. In three games, he threw for eight touchdowns and one interception, with an average quarterback rating of 133.5. He was dominating the entire league, continuing the momentum from his championship run last season and playing at an regular-season MVP level.

Without a doubt, Rodgers was currently the quarterback in the best form in the league.

But besides Rodgers, another quarterback had burst onto the scene and stunned the entire league: an undrafted rookie, a player of Chinese descent, a first-year pro—Lu Ke.

In the just-completed Week 3 game, Lu Ke went 24-for-33, throwing for 307 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He was sacked four times, earned a quarterback rating of 131.75, and a PFF grade of 1.6!

A quarterback rating over 100 in three consecutive games, a phenomenal performance in three consecutive games, and control over the flow of the game in three consecutive games—this performance was already putting him on par with Aaron Rodgers, making him the hottest quarterback in the entire league!

Forget just rookies—among the starting quarterbacks of all thirty-two teams in the league, Lu Ke’s performance was currently second only to Rodgers. The other thirty quarterbacks, including elite quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Drew Brees, were slightly overshadowed. And Lu Ke wasn’t just a rookie; he was an undrafted rookie.

It was all so magical, so astonishing. Beyond the on-field story, Lu Ke’s identity as a player of Chinese descent made it all the more incredible. He had undeniably and deservedly become the hottest topic of the week.

No one could ignore Lu Ke’s existence.

People could voice whatever opinions they wanted—maybe he was a secret weapon, maybe it was luck, maybe it was some mysterious Eastern kung fu, maybe a series of coincidences, or maybe his opponents just weren’t top-tier... But the fact was, Lu Ke’s dominant performance had become one of the biggest phenomena of the 2011 season, and everyone was talking about it.

Even ”Hunter” Charles Davis had to calm down and re-evaluate Lu Ke with a more professional, and at the same time, more critical eye.

After his bold tirade in Week 1, his ”eat the microphone” comment in Week 2, and his luck theory in Week 3, Charles had firmly positioned himself in opposition to Lu Ke, repeatedly expressing disdain and ridicule for the undrafted rookie quarterback. This earned Charles a new nickname: ”Hunter.”

In the cartoon ”Bambi,” the hunter is Bambi’s natural enemy. Now, in real life, Charles was Lu Ke’s nemesis, so he became the ”Hunter,” always ready to take a shot at Bambi. The nickname unexpectedly drew more attention to Charles, and people grew increasingly eager to see the back-and-forth between him and Lu Ke.

Now, three weeks into the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers remained undefeated—and in the showdown between rookie quarterbacks, Lu Ke had successfully proven himself by outperforming Andy Dalton. In the face of Charles’s doubts and provocations, Lu Ke had responded with his actions on the field.

These back-to-back slaps to the face were clean and heavy. Even a veteran like Charles was having trouble taking it.

”Be reasonable! Fellas, can we all be a little more reasonable? Let’s not get emotional. Let’s look at the data and make an objective assessment!” Charles roared, his voice hoarse. He tried to make himself heard and control the situation amidst the uproar, but the other commentators across from him were fired up and didn’t give him much room to speak.

The ESPN studio was currently recording the latest episode of ”Inside the League,” a show dedicated to discussing and analyzing all the games from the just-concluded Week 3 of the regular season. But right now, they were all discussing the man of the hour: Lu Ke.

Every guest commentator was scrambling to voice their opinion. Clearly, with three consecutive weeks of convincing performances, Lu Ke was winning over more and more professional analysts. But not everyone.

In response to Charles’s shouting, Spencer Larson slammed his hand down on the table like a karate chop. ”Yes, look at the data! Everyone just calm down and take a good look at the data! Three games, eleven touchdowns, one interception, and a quarterback rating over a hundred for three straight games! That’s the report card Lu Ke turned in!”

Spencer’s words flowed nonstop. Even in a suit and tie, his powerful presence gave him the air of someone rolling up his sleeves for a fight. ”In those three stats, Lu Ke is leading the league right now. You hear me? Leading the league! Even compared to Aaron Rodgers, Lu Ke isn’t losing out. So what exactly are we arguing about?”

”We’re not talking about whether Lu Ke can get into the Hall of Fame, or if he can achieve greatness!” Charles cut Spencer off abruptly. ”Ridiculous! Absolutely ridiculous! How could he possibly get into the Hall of Fame? His career is only three games old, and you’re already talking to me about the Hall of Fame? It’s not even a sure thing whether Rodgers will get in!”

”That’s right, we’re not discussing it!” Spencer laughed, dumbfounded. ”Are you sure your ears aren’t ringing? I said, we’re not talking about the Hall of Fame! What we are discussing now is whether Lu Ke has the talent to become an excellent quarterback. The answer is obviously yes. He’s not just a competent starting quarterback; he’s playing exceptionally well!”

Seeing Charles turn his head away, refusing to respond, Spencer provoked him like a matador. ”Charles, Charles, just as you said, let’s look at the data! The data doesn’t lie!”

This series of factual smackdowns made Charles’s cheeks flush red. The veins popping on his forehead looked like they were about to explode, a truly precarious and dangerous sight.

”Spencer, what Charles means is, let’s look at the whole team’s stats!” Matt Lawrence interjected. There were ten guests on the show, and everyone was free to express their opinions and views, which was one of the program’s biggest highlights—it allowed for a wide variety of perspectives.

Matt was clearly on Charles’s side. ”The San Francisco 49ers are a very, very young team, but the main reason they’ve managed a three-game winning streak should be their Defense Team. Navorro Bowman, Patrick Willis, Justin Smith—that’s the 49ers’ first line of defense...”

Just as Matt said, the San Francisco 49ers’ Defense Team had been outstanding over the past three weeks, especially their run defense. The three players mentioned—two outside linebackers and one Defensive End—were all under twenty-six years old, and all three had delivered phenomenal defensive performances.

They not only completely shut down their opponents’ ground game, forcing the opposing quarterbacks to rely on the passing attack and making their strategy one-dimensional, which in turn gave the secondary more room to anticipate plays; they also excelled in rushing the passer, racking up sacks, hits, and forcing hurried throws without missing a beat.

”Based on their current performance, these players are all worthy of All-Pro First or Second Team honors!” Matt concluded after listing a slew of statistics. ”The Defense Team completely suffocated their opponents. That’s the real core of the San Francisco 49ers’ transformation!”

”So you’re telling me the 49ers are winning games because of their Defense Team?” Spencer said with a sarcastic smile, shaking his head repeatedly.

Melissa Anderson, sitting diagonally in front of him, also started laughing. ”Fellas, come on. Eleven passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in three games, with scores of 35, 21, and 31. And now you’re telling me they’re winning because of their Defense Team? I’m not sure if you’re just biased or if you need to see an eye doctor.”

BOOM. A bomb was dropped right on the dissenters.
