American Football: King of the Bay Area

”The game is getting more and more exciting. Both sides are hitting their stride, with both the offense and defense delivering outstanding performances. Every upcoming possession is crucial for both teams. The San Francisco 49ers’ offense and the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense have both made tactical adjustments. We can see that Lu Ke is now in a Pistol Formation. With him firing on all cylinders today, the Fierce Tiger Team must be on high alert.”

”A run! It’s a surprise run! Lu Ke unexpectedly hands the ball off to running back Marcus Lynch! Lynch finds an opening, pushes forward, keeps pushing, slightly disrupting the Fierce Tiger Team’s defensive rhythm, and gains six yards! Wow, under the cover of their fiery passing game, the 49ers’ running game seems to be gradually opening up. The Fierce Tiger Team’s run defense, which has been solid all day, is about to face a serious test!”

In the middle of his commentary, Kirk paused for a moment. Seeing the 49ers’ offensive formation on the field, he couldn’t help but chuckle. ”Teddy, can you tell what kind of formation that is?”

”Hmm…” Teddy didn’t answer right away, either. He pondered for a moment, studying it carefully, and furrowed his brow. ”Is that a Pistol Formation?” Teddy’s voice trailed up, full of uncertainty. ”I think it looks more like a short Shotgun Formation.”

”Short?” Kirk interjected.

Teddy paused for a beat, and they both burst out laughing. Then Teddy continued with his commentary, ”What I mean is, it’s a Shotgun Formation with more concentrated firepower. The five receiving options are more spread out and more complex, and the intersecting routes can create countless possibilities. Wait, Lu Ke is changing the play!”

After a brief pause, Teddy noticed the change on the field. ”God, is this guy really a rookie? I know, I know, I’ve said it countless times, but this is something you only see from old-timers like Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, and we’ve already witnessed it from him many times in the last three games!”

”What I find even more incredible is Jim Hubble’s decisiveness. He’s given Lu Ke plenty of free rein, while still coordinating with the coaching staff’s playbook, to breathe unimaginable life into the San Francisco 49ers’ offense.” Kirk brought up another noteworthy point. ”I hate to say it, but the fact is, Jim Hubble is applying the Andrew Luck model of success to Lu Ke.”

”…” Teddy’s jaw dropped. He said nothing, just stared at Kirk with utter astonishment on his face, while Kirk simply raised his hands in surrender.

Andrew Luck. Although next year’s draft was still more than half a year away, it was common knowledge that he was already the top prospect for the first overall pick, even more sought-after than this year’s Cam Newton—Newton was a mobile quarterback, whereas Luck was a pocket passer, and in today’s NFL, pocket passers were still the gold standard.

For Kirk to be putting Lu Ke in the same conversation as Luck was truly audacious, perhaps even bordering on arrogant.

But the two didn’t dwell on the topic. ”The play is starting!” Kirk noticed the action on the field, promptly pulling their attention back. Both of them turned to look at the gridiron.

”The Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Line is showing incredible pressure again, the pocket collapsed, the 49ers’ Offense Line has been torn apart once more, and Geno Atkins is bursting into the pocket! But…” So shocked and surprised was Kirk that he choked on his own spit. ”It’s a run! This is a running play! The entire Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Team has been faked out, they completely misread it! The hole Atkins just tore in the pocket has now become a running lane for Lynch!”

In the blink of an eye, the advantage on the field had completely flipped. The Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Team, so confident just a moment ago, was suddenly thrown into disarray.

”Atkins is trying to recover, wrenching his body around, but it’s too late! Agility and flexibility were never his strong suits, and Lynch is through! He’s through! The Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Team had all their attention on pass defense, leaving the middle of the field relatively empty. There’s no time for anyone to fill the gap! God, this tactical mismatch has blown the play wide open!”

By now, the broadcast booth was in an uproar. Neither Kirk nor Teddy had anticipated such a rapid turn of events on the field, a true demonstration of the Mystical Technique of constant flux.

”The Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Team is scrambling to recover, but Lynch’s power run is unstoppable! He sidesteps a tackle from outside linebacker Brandon Johnson and keeps churning forward! Then he barrels through cornerback Nate Clements! His balance is slightly affected, but he’s still on his feet! The Fierce Tiger’s defense is in complete shambles!”

”Lynch’s powerful run is just relentless! Outside linebacker Thomas Howard has him wrapped up by the waist, but—Lynch breaks free! With a powerful spin, he sheds the tackle! God, he’s still going! The Fierce Tiger Team’s defenders are missing tackle after tackle! This momentum is completely unstoppable!”

”Another defender misses a tackle! God, Lynch, Lynch, LYNCH! Lynch is in Beast Mode! The thirty, the thirty-five, the forty! LYNCH! LYNCH! Jesus Christ! Three defenders finally manage to pull him down together, at last containing this tidal wave of an attack! Lynch’s forward progress stops at the forty-one-yard line! That’s a twenty-five-yard rush! Unbelievable! Wow, that was just unbelievable!”

The entire stadium erupted!

If a passing attack is a surgical strike, then a rushing attack is brute-force domination. No finesse, just head-on collisions—strength against strength in a direct confrontation that sends sparks flying. A duel waged with overwhelming, crushing power. When a Defense Team makes a dominant stop on a charging bull of a runner, or when an offense carves out a path with unstoppable force, the effect is the same: it fires up morale, electrifies the team, and gets the blood pumping!

The away fans’ section of the stands absolutely erupted. Casting off all restraint, they leaped, cheered, shouted, and roared. The thunderous roar of their support burst forth with staggering power, threatening to drown out the home crowd and truly seizing the momentum!

Especially watching Marcus Lynch on the field, looking like a wild beast as he flexed his muscles and roared, waving his massive fists in front of the home fans. He forcefully silenced all their distracting jeers and boos. The starkly contrasting atmospheres at Paul Brown Stadium reached a fever pitch.

The entire broadcast booth was buzzing. Kirk and Teddy both had their fists clenched as they delivered their impassioned commentary. Lynch’s run was just so spectacular and thrilling that it ignited everyone’s passion, the commentators included. In fact, for them, being able to take in every single development on the field made it all the more exciting!

”Let’s take a look at the replay,” Kirk said, reigning in his surging emotions and dutifully resuming his commentary. ”Before the snap, Lu Ke spotted a weakness in the Fierce Tiger Team’s defensive formation. That sharp observation is nothing like what you’d expect from a rookie. More importantly, he made an audible to call a run, changing the play on the fly, and then used Lynch’s powerful rush to absolutely manhandle the Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Team!”

”The tactical mismatch put the Fierce Tiger Team at a disadvantage, but what’s even more incredible is that on this run, Lynch broke… uh, four tackles, and was only brought down under the combined weight of three players,” Teddy added.

”A run that powerful is really an eye-opener. What did we just call it? Beast Mode! Right, Marcus Lynch, Marshawn Lynch… wait, is he related to that beast on the Seattle Seahawks?”

After that, Teddy and Kirk looked at each other as if they had just discovered America. You could just imagine that after today’s game, Marcus Lynch was going to be the center of attention.

Geno Atkins slammed his fist on the ground, his face etched with frustration. Whether in run defense or tactical planning, the Fierce Tiger Team’s Defense Team had been completely outmatched on the last two plays, utterly failing to keep pace. It was a total disaster! But what were they supposed to do now?

’Strengthen the run defense? Or stick to strengthening the pass defense? What about blitzing?’

The Cincinnati Bengals’ Defense Team had been truly outstanding today, playing with impressive ferocity through the first three quarters. Even though the San Francisco 49ers held the lead, neither side had yielded an inch in their standoff. But now, entering the fourth quarter, the Defense Team seemed to be struggling to keep up.

It’s the same in any sport. The final moments before the end of the game are the most tense, but they are also when miracles are made. In the NFL, Eli Manning is famous for being the best fourth-quarter quarterback. He often spends the first three quarters digging his team into a hole, falling behind by three or four Touchdowns, only to mount a furious comeback in the final quarter to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Now, the San Francisco 49ers were the ones in the lead, but heading into the fourth quarter, Lu Ke also seemed to be kicking into a higher gear. So… what were they supposed to do?

Atkins looked back at the Defense Team’s captain, outside linebacker Thomas Howard—he was the only defensive player who could communicate directly with the coaches, as his helmet was equipped with the corresponding earpiece.

After receiving the play call from the coaching staff, Howard began signaling to his teammates: the defensive formation would remain the same, but their tactics and focus would shift slightly. The linebackers were to lean forward, ready for a potential run. The cornerbacks and safeties would stick to a zone coverage scheme. Additionally, they were dropping one man from the blitz, using a three-man rush from the Defense Line.

Atkins got the signal and got back into formation. His assignment was still to rush the passer and stop the run, but now he had to adjust his focus. He couldn’t just fixate on Lu Ke; he also had to keep an eye on Lynch.

’Focus, focus!’
