American Football: King of the Bay Area

On the practice field, the players were running hard. It looked like just another routine practice, but a closer look revealed something was off.

The players were split into two distinct groups as they ran.

The players who had been watching from the sidelines for the past two weeks had also gradually chosen their sides and rejoined the team. And so, two completely different groups were now running on the field, separated by half its length, a clear line drawn between them.

After an unbelievable victory in Week 2 of the regular season, the team seemed to finally start gelling. But that only lasted two days. The next time they met, the conflict had flared up again, even more intensely than before. It was becoming increasingly blatant and intractable, with no signs of a solution.

Was it because the team was still in a transitional phase after the massive offseason overhaul? Or was the conflict between the veteran players and the newcomers inherently irreconcilable? Or was it because of... the Chinese-American quarterback?

But this was all just speculation. What role Lu Ke’s Chinese-American identity truly played in the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room conflict remained unknown.

After all, he was the one and only Chinese-American quarterback in the entire league. No one knew how things would unfold, how the situation should be handled, or how the other players would react.

For reference, the situation was remarkably similar when the first Black players entered the football and baseball leagues. All the players, coaches, and owners across the league were united in their opposition. Even the fans constantly protested and ostracized them. The Black players had to face pervasive death threats, and the teams that chose to sign them endured overwhelming pressure from public opinion and their own fans.

Naturally, the Black players had no friends in the locker room. They were completely alone.

Of course, competitive sports are different. In the end, they relied on their own skill and performance to achieve victory after victory, proving their ability, earning recognition, and changing history.

This was the twenty-first century. Things had changed, and racial segregation was a thing of the past. Still, the situation for a Chinese-American player drew some parallels.

On the heels of two victories, the San Francisco 49ers welcomed Alex Smith’s return in Week 3 of the regular season. At the quarterback position, Lu Ke was no longer the only option—and in the eyes of many, not the best one, either.

Whether to play under an undrafted rookie Chinese-American quarterback or a veteran who was a former first-overall draft pick—long before the coach announced the starter, it was clear the players had already made their choice.

Today was the official media day. Every reporter would be asking about Alex and about Jim’s decision. The starting quarterback was the topic on everyone’s mind. Even if the decision wasn’t made today, the team needed to make a choice by Friday at the latest, otherwise they wouldn’t make it in time for the tactical walk-throughs for Sunday’s game.

And so, the locker room had become a powder keg.

As they ran, Parris’s anger, far from subsiding, only swelled. He shot several resentful glances at Alex before finally bursting out, ”What the hell was that all about? Are you out of your mind? That guy is way too arrogant. If we don’t knock him down a peg, there won’t be a place for you on this team anymore!”

As he spoke, Parris stopped running completely, panting heavily as he yelled, ”Don’t tell me you’re just going to give up, to surrender? This is your team! I’m not playing for some snot-nosed Chinese kid!”

Parris’s voice echoed across the empty field, but it didn’t make Alex stop. He continued running, seemingly unaffected.

Both angry and helpless, Parris gritted his teeth and started running again to catch up.

”This is my team,” Alex’s voice sounded, calm and measured. Talking while running required controlling one’s breath and pace, so Alex maintained his composure, speaking in a matter-of-fact tone.

Parris thought he must have misheard. He turned to look, an expression of confusion on his face, but then Alex confirmed it again, ”This is my team.” Parris’s expression immediately brightened. Unable to suppress his excitement, he pumped his fist, almost jumping in the air.

”But I’ll do it my way,” Alex added. Parris faltered. This time, Alex turned his head to look at him. ”This is the football field. All those petty and stupid schemes are meaningless. Only by truly defeating him on the gridiron, by winning back my starting spot fair and square, can I take back this team.”

”But...” Parris tried to say more.

But Alex cut him off sharply, retorting without missing a beat, ”What, you don’t have faith in me? You don’t think I can beat him with my own ability?”

Parris was speechless. A brief flicker of doubt crossed his mind, but it was gone in an instant, and Parris quickly recovered. ”I have faith. Alex, of course I have faith. But you were out injured for six weeks and only started training again last week. How are you feeling...?”

”Still recovering,” Alex answered honestly. Returning to training after an injury and a long absence was always difficult. It took double or triple the effort just to get your feel and rhythm back. ”I officially started passing drills yesterday. Today, I’m ready to join contact practice. As for the results... we’ll just have to wait and see. I can’t wait to get started.”

Parris nodded again and again in agreement. ”I can’t wait either. You have to show that rookie what’s what, teach him a good lesson, and let him know what a real starting quarterback is supposed to look like!”

The competition had officially begun!

”Jim, you know this isn’t going to solve anything,” Offensive Coordinator Craig Roman said, his brow deeply furrowed with concern. ”If we just rely on suppression and punishment, the locker room conflicts will only escalate. They won’t get resolved.”

”Yeah, I agree,” Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio added, nodding. ”Instead of suppressing it, we should have just let them blow up. Let them have a good fight, fist to fist, settle the score, and vent all that negative energy. It’s more straightforward, if a bit rough. These athletes are all overflowing with energy. They need an outlet, and then it’ll be over.”

”So, what you’re saying is I should just let the players take a shit all over me?” Jim’s anger hadn’t subsided. He viciously kicked a nearby chair, his face still flushed a deep red, as if he’d been boiled. ”If they have that much excess energy, then they can train harder. If thirty laps isn’t enough, make it fifty. If that’s still not enough, double their strength training in the gym. Mark and Kevin would be thrilled.”

With his hands on his hips, Jim paced back and forth agitatedly in an open space in the locker room, apparently unable to calm down.

Kip Kester couldn’t help but scratch his head. He glanced over at Craig and Vic, but found they both had expressions that said, ’I tried my best.’ Kip could only let out a long sigh and force himself to speak up. ”Jim, is this your solution? Locker room problems are not to be taken lightly. Don’t you have a better idea?”

For any team that relies on teamwork, locker room issues cannot be ignored. Throughout history, countless top-tier teams have collapsed due to internal conflicts, bringing entire dynasties to an end.

The San Francisco 49ers weren’t a championship team, but they were one on the verge of a comeback. After a complete offseason rebuild, the team was on an upward trajectory. It wasn’t just the fresh energy brought by the new quarterback; the Defense Team and the Offense Line were also hitting their stride. If the locker room issue wasn’t properly resolved, the glow from their two-game winning streak would quickly fade.

In response to Kip’s well-intentioned question, Jim waved his hand in annoyance, as if shooing away a fly. ”You expect me to come up with a solution? For a bunch of football players overflowing with testosterone? Are we supposed to sit around a campfire like a bunch of high school girls for a heart-to-heart and share our feelings? Bullshit!”

Jim took several heavy breaths, his chest heaving violently. ”I’m a coach. We are all coaches. Our job isn’t to be their babysitters; it’s to draw up tactics and prepare for the game!” At this, Jim nodded forcefully, as if to reaffirm his own thinking. ”Yes. We need to discuss this week’s starting quarterback right now. The official media day is about to start, and we need to have a unified message.”

The members of the coaching staff exchanged glances, their eyes finally settling on Craig and Vic—the coordinators for the offense and defense, outranked only by Jim. Their gazes all carried the same question:

’Is this how we’re solving the locker room issue? Or to be more accurate, are we just going to let it fester? Punish them with thirty laps and then ignore the problem? Is that really going to be okay? What about these irreconcilable conflicts, do they not matter? Shouldn’t we be looking for another solution?’

But Craig and Vic both simply spread their hands and shrugged, saying nothing, their expressions ones of utter helplessness. And so, the others also kept their mouths shut.

”Winning! The best way to solve any problem is to win!” Jim said, clenching his fist with fiery passion. ”So, we must focus on winning. The Week 3 game, starting quarterback. What’s your take? Alex, or Lu Ke?”

In a way, Jim was right. The locker room problem was really just the quarterback problem: Alex Smith, or Lu Ke?
