American Football: King of the Bay Area

”Now, it’s time to witness another one of a quarterback’s skills,” Kirk further explained to the audience before the drive began. ”Controlling the game clock, controlling the pace of the game, and holding victory firmly in your grasp. It’s a basic, simple skill, yet not every quarterback can master it.”

The game was nearing its end. With three minutes and sixteen seconds left, the score on the field was 10-24. The San Francisco 49ers were leading. It would take at least two possessions to catch up, which meant the 49ers were in control.

In a situation like this, the offense’s job wasn’t to score another touchdown or even more points, but to run out the clock. Typically, the coaching staff will call a heavy dose of running plays. Each run can burn six to ten seconds off the clock, and the quarterback can let the forty-second play clock wind all the way down before snapping the ball. Then, with another run, they can burn even more time.

Rinse and repeat. You don’t need many different plays. Even if they go three-and-out, they can still burn around a hundred seconds.

But if one of those runs breaks for big yardage, or a surprise pass play is completed for another first down, it means the offense can do it all over again and keep burning the clock.

The more time they burn, the smaller the window of opportunity for their opponent.

More importantly, passing is too risky. A pass could be intercepted, or even returned for a score. Running the ball is much safer. As long as the running back focuses on protecting the football and doesn’t get greedy trying to break a long run, the risk of a fumble is almost zero. Plus, with the quarterback simply handing the ball off to the running back, there’s no chance of a sack on a blitz.

In short, from every angle, this is the safest and most correct choice.

Unless a low-probability event occurs, like the running back fumbling the ball, the opponent recovering it, and returning it for a touchdown. Or, a botched handoff between the quarterback and running back, which wastes no time and leads to a quick three-and-out. Such improbable events have actually happened on the football field, and more often than you might think.

So, just as Kirk said, what we were about to witness was another skill of a quarterback: game management. Not just running the offense, but controlling the entire unit’s tempo to effectively burn the clock.

Back on the field, after the offense lined up, Lu Ke didn’t rush the snap. As was his habit, he first read the defense.

Jim’s instructions replayed in his mind. ’Run the ball, run the ball, and run the ball again.’ All Lu Ke had to do was snap the ball and hand it off to the running back—not Marcus Lynch, but Kendall Hunter. The rest was up to Hunter, who was supposed to just plow ahead like a tank clearing a path. That was it.

There was no real play call, no special technique involved. Jim had repeated himself, drilling the instruction in three times, because he knew rookie quarterbacks often had a strong desire to put on a show. They couldn’t resist trying to be a hero, which often led to mistakes with irreversible consequences.

But Lu Ke had a different idea. He spoke into his helmet mic, ”Coach, the Fierce Tiger Team is in a heavy run-stop formation. Hunter won’t even get two yards, he might even lose yardage.”

The familiar voice that came through his earpiece wasn’t Jim Hubble’s, but that of Brian Hampton, who was sitting in the tactical analysis room high above the field.

The tactical analysis room, better known as the ”War Room”—a name that practically reeked of gunpowder. Every stadium has two of them high above the field, one for the home team and one for the visitors, much like the locker rooms.

It’s every team’s on-site command fortress, where data analysts, the general manager, the director of player personnel, and so on, all gather. If the team owner is in a good mood, they might even leave their luxury suite to visit the War Room and boost morale.

For every single play call, the coaches on the sideline are in direct communication with the War Room before a command is sent down. Generally, the head coach is the one with the final say. Occasionally, however, an overbearing general manager will seize control and call plays directly during the game.

On the San Francisco 49ers, Trent Balk was a GM who knew his place. He didn’t interfere with the team’s strategy, entrusting it completely to Jim Hubble. Therefore, the person with the initiative in the War Room was Brian Hampton, the team’s tactical director. He was responsible for summarizing the analysts’ data, cross-referencing it with the team’s playbook, and providing real-time feedback during the game.

In the chain of command for play-calling, Brian, Jim, and Lu Ke were all on the same line, communicating directly. If the offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, quarterback coach, linebacker coach, or others needed to chime in, they would use their walkie-talkies, switch to the right channel, and break into the conversation.

”Lu Ke, stick to the plan! Stick to the plan!” Brian repeated the order, apparently with no intention of listening to Lu Ke’s suggestion.

”What I mean is, if we go with a short pass, we can catch them by surprise,” Lu Ke pressed, stating his case again. ”Assuming a high completion percentage, we can use the run after the catch to burn even more time. That’s much more logical than having Hunter run straight into a brick wall for no gain, ending the play right there.”

This time, Brian looked down at the field from his high perch:

The Fierce Tiger Team had stacked the box with seven players on the line, like an iron wall, completely sealing off all the running lanes. Meanwhile, the four defensive backs were playing off the line, positioned six or seven yards back to defend against a potential pass. Overall, they had almost completely abandoned a blitzing strategy, and the entire focus of their defense had shifted—

Everyone knew the 49ers were going to run the ball.

Brian let out a soft sigh.

By all logic, even though everyone knew what the 49ers were planning, any team in this situation would still choose to run the ball. The strategy of running out the clock was meant to be simple and brutish, but effective. It didn’t matter if the opponent knew it was coming.

However, with three minutes and sixteen seconds still on the clock, the 49ers didn’t just need to burn time; they also needed to get a first down. That was the only way to further shrink the Fierce Tiger Team’s window of opportunity.

”Jim, it’s your call.” It was a fifty-fifty proposition, and Brian wasn’t the one to make the order. Jim was.

Jim stood on the sideline, pacing back and forth with his headset on. He paused for a moment, his eyes fixed on Lu Ke, studying him intently. ”Lu Ke, go with your read.” At his core, Jim was a gambler. He always had been.

Lu Ke didn’t reply. Instead, he took a step forward and began to call an audible. But none of the 49ers players moved, and neither did the players on the Fierce Tiger Team. It seemed everyone was convinced the change was just a smokescreen.

After stepping back again, Lu Ke settled into the Pistol Formation, with Hunter positioned to his right, four yards back.

There was no fancy fake-out. Lu Ke called for the snap, took the ball, and quickly dropped back, moving to his right. But after only two steps, he caught sight of a Fierce Tiger Team player in his peripheral vision.

It was an outside linebacker. He had unexpectedly launched a blitz, taking advantage of the 49ers’ outnumbered Offense Line—five men against seven. Quick as lightning, he slipped past the blockers and cut diagonally into the 49ers’ pocket.

”Hunter!” Lu Ke yelled. Then, not waiting to see if Hunter had heard, he quickly changed direction, scrambling to his left. That brief moment of evasion cost him, but Lu Ke didn’t hesitate any longer. He raised his arm and threw the football. Despite the slight delay, it was still a quick release, taking only two to two-and-a-half seconds.

The football arched high into the air, sailing over the wall of the Defense Team and landing perfectly in the soft spot between the Defense Line and the secondary. It was about a five-yard pass. A 49ers player emerged from a crowd of defenders, leaped up gently, and made the catch.

”A pass! It’s actually a pass!” In the broadcast booth, Kirk couldn’t hide his surprise. ”Number eighty-eight, Logan Newman, easily plucks the football out of the air and then starts a powerful run upfield! The Fierce Tiger Team’s defense was caught completely flat-footed and couldn’t keep up. Newman gains thirteen yards on the play before he’s finally brought down! Beautiful!”

”Both teams made small tactical adjustments there,” Teddy noted, circling the Fierce Tiger Team’s outside linebacker, Manny Lawson, on the screen. ”At a crucial moment, the Fierce Tiger Team went with a one-man blitz, and it was very effective. But Lu Ke sniffed out the danger, evaded quickly, and completed the pass. Wow, that brief, small-scale clash was still spectacular!”

”The 49ers are already getting back to the line... are they going with a no-huddle?” Before Kirk and Teddy could even finish their analysis, gasps erupted. Kirk quickly picked up the play-by-play, ”In a flash, Lu Ke does a little hop-step and completes another five-yard pass! This time it’s Michael Crabtree on the receiving end! He uses his physicality to power forward for a nine-yard gain, leaving them just one yard short of another first down!”

”HAHAHA!” Kirk couldn’t help but laugh heartily. ”Two straight surprise up-tempo plays, and they’ve only burned less than thirty seconds, but the San Francisco 49ers have already driven twenty-two yards downfield! Everyone thought they were just going to sit on the ball and run out the clock, but instead, they’re still pushing forward! Now the Fierce Tiger Team’s defense is in a total panic!”

”This has really caught everyone by surprise. Did you hear that? The gasps up here in the booth just won’t stop,” Teddy said, laughing along. ”Kirk, what’s your guess for the next play? Are the 49ers going to pass or run?”

”Only one yard to go for another first down? Hmm, I’m guessing... a quarterback sneak by Lu Ke himself.” Kirk cracked a little joke at the tense moment, the subtext being that nobody could predict what the 49ers would do next. ”The situation is getting more and more difficult for the Fierce Tiger Team. Now they have to guess: is it going to be a run to burn the clock, or a pass to keep the drive alive!”
