Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 290: Chapter 280: Settling Down

In this world, the rights of a citizen were paramount.

Every human need was to be met.

”We don’t have anywhere to live. Can you help us find a place?”

Seeing the law enforcement officer’s attitude, Tang Mo pieced a few things together and boldly made her request.

Fortune favors the bold, while the timid starve. Besides, she had nothing to lose.

”No place to live? What about your house?”

The uniformed men looked at the group before them with suspicion. Houses were distributed for free to everyone at birth, so how could someone possibly have no place to live?

”We used to live together, but our house was destroyed in an accident, so we ended up wandering here.”

Tang Mo was completely making this up. If the officers decided to check their identification, they’d be in real trouble.

However, she was betting that since the Illusion Realm had let them in and wouldn’t let them leave easily, it wouldn’t completely sever them from the world within.

It had to give them some sort of identity. At the very least, they wouldn’t be treated as outsiders. Otherwise, how could they fully grasp the meaning the Illusion Realm intended for them?

”Hold out your wrists.”

The officer eyed them suspiciously.

Tang Mo immediately looked at her own wrist. Sure enough, a barcode had appeared there at some point. ’It seems this is our proof of identity, legitimizing our existence in this world.’

She readily extended her arm, allowing the officer to scan the barcode.

Seeing this, the other twenty-odd people were no longer flustered and raised their arms one by one.

”Strange. They really don’t have a registered residence.”

In this world, no one needed to buy a house. The government simply allocated living space to everyone according to their needs.

And since there was no need to buy a house, with distribution being based on need, it also meant you couldn’t sell your house, let alone move.

Each person’s sole place of residence was etched into their identity information.

Although he didn’t know why this situation had occurred, leaving citizens without housing on the street was clearly not an option in this world.

The officer quickly reported the situation to his superiors. Less than two minutes later, he received a response.

”My apologies. Please come with me. I’ll take you to the house that’s been assigned to you.”

One car certainly couldn’t fit so many people, so the uniformed man called for a small bus, which was just big enough to hold all twenty-odd of them.

The vehicle stopped in a grassy area. When they got out, a neighborhood of villas greeted their eyes.

There were no fences, no locks. The uniformed man led the group and gently pushed open the front door of one of the villas.

”This house has three floors and twenty-five rooms, just enough for all of you. If you need anything in the future, just use the ’Omni-Link’ on the room’s display screen to get in touch.”

Watching them enter the rooms one by one, touching this and looking at that, the officers confirmed their private suspicions.

’These people must have something wrong with their heads. Their mental state is probably unstable.’

After explaining this, the man didn’t want to stay a second longer and drove away.

”I never thought I’d see a society with true common prosperity for all humanity. People used to say this was a utopia, but I never imagined such a utopia could really be achieved.”

The group stood in the villa, too stunned to speak. They had just arrived and were already given a house?

The surprise was so sudden and intense that it felt overwhelming.

Tang Mo, however, simply found a random room on the first floor and went inside.

The room was sparse, with almost no excess furniture—just a bed, a table, and a chair.

There was also a single-person sofa, similar to a gaming chair, that one could recline in completely. A small helmet sat on it.

Tang Mo instinctively went to lock the door but found that her room had no lock at all.

It wasn’t just her room. It seemed none of the rooms, not even the villa’s main door, had locks. There were no anti-theft measures anywhere, as if the possibility of someone stealing had never even been considered.

’That makes sense,’ she thought. ’In a world where humanity has achieved common prosperity, why would anyone think of taking another’s property?’

Tang Mo sat down in the sofa chair and put on the helmet.

A screen materialized before her eyes, displaying numerous panels.

Every specific human need was listed on it, including consumption, entertainment, education, learning, and even romance and socializing.

Tang Mo casually clicked on the consumption panel, selected a bowl of chicken curry rice, and then clicked ”Deliver.”

About three minutes later, Tang Mo noticed a steaming hot bowl of curry rice had appeared on her room’s table.

Only then did Tang Mo see a round hole in the wall next to her table. On the other side of the hole was a tube, leading to who-knows-where.

Tang Mo took off the helmet and began to eat the curry rice with relish.

It tasted pretty good, though it had the flavor of a convenience store meal that had been heated up.

’Since everything here is free, why not order a bunch of stuff, pack it in my Space, and take it with me?’

The bold idea had no sooner appeared in Tang Mo’s mind than she dismissed it.

Others might not know, but she knew perfectly well.

Although this world felt completely real, an Illusion Realm was still an Illusion Realm. Nothing from it could be taken out.

’So, did the food I just ate here actually enter my stomach? After all, this feeling of fullness is very real.’

Tang Mo couldn’t figure this problem out and decided to set it aside for the time being.

She went back to the chair to mess with the screen, looked up a lot of information, and finally got a general grasp of how this world operated.

In the end, it all came down to technological development, which had achieved human liberation. People no longer needed to do any work and could directly enjoy the benefits provided by AI.

Moreover, the convenient and efficient smart lifestyle allowed people to accomplish anything they could imagine without leaving their homes. Gradually, everyone just stayed cooped up inside.

’Is this the life humanity wanted?’

It seemed this really was the life people of the past had longed for.

To get everything you wanted without having to work or bear any of the pressures of life or society.

Being alive became something the whole world helped you with, making it utterly effortless.

But now that Tang Mo was actually experiencing it all, why did everything feel so... bland?
