After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 239: Chapter 239: The Possibility of Reconciliation

The things she gave Wayne Abbott and his group were all from her storage space.

This included some food supplies.

Wayne Abbott and his team had already turned in all their Crystal Cores for the day. If she didn’t send them some food, they would probably run out completely...

Watching Treasure wag its tail beside her, Nina Jacobs patted its head.

Then, she pulled a case of canned dog food from the car.

This was also from her storage space. The dog food was specially designed for large breeds, perfect for Treasure.

”Nina, I’m back.”

Sherry Renner opened the door and leaned weakly against the frame.

”What’s with the post-work funk?”

Nina could practically see the monstrous cloud of ”resentment” billowing behind Sherry.

”The investigation. I’ve been ’cooperating’ all day long,” Sherry said in a tearful voice. ”I’m exhausted.”

”Ian’s dad is an absolute devil. He interrogated every single one of us.”

”Heath Chandler?”

’He’s still investigating this?’

Nina was a little surprised. In her past life, Heath Chandler hadn’t interfered in the affairs of City D at all.

’Could it be because Myra Lawson already had someone by her side back then?’

”You bet. It feels like some big shot just parachuted in from headquarters.”

Sherry reached out to stroke Treasure’s long fur, but the dog was focused on chowing down and paid her no mind.

”Did they find anything?”

Nina asked.

Although the Enforcement Bureau had some surveillance cameras, she had used an Invisibility Potion.

Besides, she hadn’t even entered Wyatt Jacobs’ room.

”They found out the problem was with the food,” Sherry said. ”The cafeteria will probably be investigated tomorrow. But I heard he’s seen that type of poison before. Apparently, someone from some organization has used it.”

”He certainly gets around.”

Nina glanced down at Treasure.

’Could it be that Heath Chandler also knows about the Aegis Conclave?’

’But no matter what, the investigation won’t lead back to me.’

After all, when Holden Shaw was injured and brought to the base hospital, the Healing Potion had already neutralized his poison.

”I guess so. He has been out there for a long time, after all,” Sherry said, referring to Myra Lawson and her estranged family. ”I even did a reading for him and Ian. From the looks of the divination, it’s possible for them to reconcile, though the process might be a bit difficult.”

’Reconcile?’

Nina wasn’t interested in other people’s family drama, but if Heath Chandler really wasn’t leaving this time, then as for Keldorn...

The next day, neither Nina nor Leo Hale went out.

Vera Coleman had decided to come home early.

After spending more than ten days in a suite at the base hospital, she and Daniel Hale had decided to go home to recuperate.

”The hospital has been getting busier and busier, and the wards are becoming overcrowded,” Daniel Hale explained to Justin Lawson in the administration building. ”We figured we’d come back first and leave the space for those who need it more.”

Justin Lawson nodded. ”That’s probably for the best. If you need anything, just tell Shaw directly.”

Myra Lawson had specifically instructed him on this matter before she left.

”Don’t worry. With Lucy Lynch and the others here, my wife and I don’t even get a chance to get up in the middle of the night, HAHAHA.”

Daniel Hale was already planning to return to work in a couple of days.

”Speaking of which, has that kid Nina been all right these past two days?”

Justin Lawson seemed hesitant, but since he and Daniel Hale were old acquaintances, he decided to speak his mind.

”My former son-in-law doesn’t understand the situation. Plus, he’d had contact with that Wyatt Jacobs fellow before, so he was bound to be a bit rash.”

After hearing from Adrian Shaw about what happened at the hospital, Justin couldn’t help but feel a little angry himself.

Forget one Wyatt Jacobs dying.

Even if ten of him had died, there was no reason to suspect Nina Jacobs.

He even told Heath Chandler to apologize, but Heath refused.

It wasn’t because he still suspected Nina, but because he felt there was no need to apologize.

”That Heath Chandler... he’s a stubborn mule,” Justin lamented. ”But he’s not a bad person at heart...”

Daniel Hale understood now.

’No wonder Justin Lawson came to see him today. It was about this.’

”Nina isn’t that petty,” Daniel said. ”Besides, when something this bizarre happens, suspicion is only human nature. I just wonder how the investigation is going now?”

Daniel Hale asked.

His own men had also reported to him that Heath Chandler had been conducting a thorough investigation for the past two days.

Since he was new to the base and didn’t know anyone, he had ended up offending a lot of people.

”There are no leads. It might have been the work of another organization.”

”Another organization?”

”The poison extracted from the leftovers of Wyatt Jacobs’ meal is identical to a poison Heath Chandler has encountered elsewhere,” Justin explained. ”It’s possible it came from the Aegis Conclave.”

Justin had heard Myra Lawson mention this organization before, which was why he was giving Heath Chandler a free hand to continue the investigation.

When Daniel Hale returned, he told Nina about his conversation with Justin Lawson.

”He doesn’t need to apologize to me,” Nina said, ”and I hope he continues to investigate.”

Nina was teasing little Sabrina with a rattle.

A baby less than a month old is rarely awake, so it was a precious moment to see little Sabrina with her eyes wide open.

’Having the base take notice of the Aegis Conclave at a time like this...’

’Maybe it’s not such a bad thing...’

The aroma of food wafted from the kitchen. To welcome Vera Coleman back, Walsh had already prepared a full table of dishes.

The scent also drew Daniel Hale over.

Looking at the table laden with impressive dishes, Daniel Hale couldn’t help but sigh in admiration.

This was even better than what they had eaten before the apocalypse.

”If only we had some green vegetables, even just for garnish,”

Walsh said with a hint of regret.

It wasn’t about showing off his culinary skills; he had simply discovered these past few days that no matter how much food he cooked, nothing ever went to waste.

Wayne Warner always ate every last bite.

And the golden retriever in the yard was just as indiscriminate with its food.

A clean plate is the highest form of respect for a chef.

Walsh already loved to cook, and these past few days at Nina’s place had brought him immense satisfaction.

Moreover, the salary Nina paid him was more than five times what he would earn at the base cafeteria.

And it wasn’t just Nina; Vera Coleman was also very pleased with Walsh.

In addition to cooking, Walsh would wash all the dishes every day before leaving.

Sometimes he would even find time to go next door and whip up a few dishes.

”Come eat with us, Walsh. The more, the merrier.”

Vera Coleman said with a smile.

She invited everyone to the table, including Merrick Stone and Lucy Lynch.

By the end of the meal, Nina was completely stuffed.

”I’m going to walk the dog.”

Nina decided to take Treasure out for a walk.

Evening was falling. Ever since Wyatt Jacobs’ arrest, more and more people were out and about in the base at night.

People stood in twos and threes on both sides of the road, chatting about something or other.

She used to take Treasure for walks in less crowded areas, but now there were hardly any such places left.

Especially after the Superpower User Alliance was absorbed, the number of survivors in the base had skyrocketed.

Nina found that it was actually quite interesting to walk around with her Five Senses Enhancement active, listening to the idle chatter of passersby.

”I heard the Superpower User Alliance is also participating in the superpower competition this time. Their goal is also the Mystic Ice Core.”

”People like us probably don’t stand a chance.”

”...My friend in the Crawford Army already jumped ship to the Superpower User Alliance. I heard the Crawford Army isn’t planning on causing trouble for The Alliance.”

”Probably because they don’t dare.”

”...Who dares to go down those roads to the north anymore? They’re crawling with zombie animals.”

”The pleasure camp got some new goods in. Our guy Stone is going to check them out tomorrow. Jealous?”

”Keep your voice down...”

Fifth Mr. Stone quickly shushed him.

Luckily, the young woman was just walking past with her golden retriever and didn’t seem to have noticed them.
