I Was Written as Cannon Fodder, Now I'm Rewriting the Genre

Bai Qiang wondered what it meant to be the protagonist. The protagonist was the one who always stood at the very front to take the most vicious beatings, carry the heaviest blame, and had to act like a saint without making a single mistake! The system wasn’t rewarding her; it was handing her a death sentence! The new king ascends the throne, and the old king must die? How was this a gentle reminder? This was a threat! The corpse of the previous protagonist wasn’t even cold yet, and she had already become the next target. To hell with being the protagonist—whoever wanted it could have it! She didn’t want it!

But the system could not hear her roars and returned to a deathly silence.

Bai Qiang was infuriated by this unreasonable system. Before she even had the time to figure out what exactly had happened between Nan Jiamu and that person, she was kicked onto the very same guillotine. Did that person kill Nan Jiamu because Nan Jiamu owed her something? Or was it because Nan Jiamu was the protagonist? Would she try to kill her next?

In the distance, as if sensing her gaze, Yin Zhen suddenly turned her head to look at Bai Qiang. That pair of bloodstained, temperatureless eyes made Bai Qiang take an uncontrollable step back.

Nan Jiamu’s corpse lay in the ruins. Trouble’s Mind Beacon lost control and disconnected, the snapped-string-like hum stinging everyone’s minds until they went numb.

Signal stumbled a step forward, unable to believe any of this. ”Why did this happen?” she asked. Did their captain not die at the hands of their Blood Clan enemies, but at the hands of another Ancient Abyss Player?

”I’m going to kill you, AHHH!” Dropout raised her fists, her entire body undergoing beastification.

Being older and more experienced, Ye Se was still able to maintain his rationality at this moment. He reached out to pull Dropout back, but she threw his hand off at once.

At this time, the fiercely clashing waves of spiritual power and water tides in the center of the laboratory violently exploded. The beastified Dropout was ruthlessly sent flying by the shockwave. Bai Qiang teleported over and caught her with shadows. By the time Dropout regained her footing, Yin Zhen was no longer in her original spot. Letting her right arm, which was still dripping with blood, hang by her side, she strode toward Lilith’s direction.

Zoe was swatted down from midair by Lilith’s frenzied tide of spiritual power. The Water Curtain shattered into tens of thousands of droplets as she crashed into the ruins and skidded for over a dozen meters, her ice spear shattering by her side.

Currently, Yin Zhen only had her S-Class blood silk and Shadow Servant left for normal use. She rushed over to block in front of Zoe, using her left hand to activate the blood silk. The S-Class blood silk crashed into Lilith’s spiritual power shield, stirring up layers of ripples but failing to penetrate it.

Raising her head from the ruins, Zoe saw Yin Zhen’s dangling arm and the blood trickling down her fingertips. Her pupils shrank violently. She actually did not know Nan Jiamu, nor did she know what she had brought those people here to do. It was just that seeing Yin Zhen have to sacrifice an arm to kill that person made Zoe’s heart ache for her.

”Can you still fight?” Yin Zhen asked while bearing the pressure from Lilith.

”Yes,” Zoe gritted her teeth and climbed to her feet.

”Then fight!”

Ian had gone over to Lucy’s side to assist her in speeding up the hacking process. As long as they could destroy the bloody brain in the center, Lilith and the other two Blood Clan ancestors would die together. Yin Zhen and Zoe needed to hold on a little longer!

Yin Zhen’s blood web snapped apart layer by layer, her feet plowing two deep trenches in the ground as she was forced to slide back over a dozen meters under the immense pressure. The Shadow Servant used its body to share a portion of the burden for her, its figure, composed of black shadows, continuously undergoing Transformation and tearing apart under the crushing spiritual power before condensing once more.

Zoe dashed out from behind her, injecting her spiritual power into a spear formed from water currents and hurling it out. At that moment, the frenzied tide of spiritual power Lilith crushed down upon them acted like raging waves crashing into a reef, parting on its own before Zoe’s water current spear. Using the method Source had taught her, Zoe guided that Strength toward both sides, as if using an invisible blade to cleave the oncoming massive wave, ultimately crashing it into the spiritual power shield in front of Lilith.

Lilith’s spiritual power shield cracked. Her eyebrows twitched slightly, and for the first time, a trace of an emotion that could be called surprise appeared in her perennially compassionate and calm blood-colored pupils.

”Source even taught you this?”

”She taught me more than just this!”

Zoe’s entire body turned into a stream of water and charged toward Lilith, her speed more than double what it was before. Silvery-white spikes of spiritual power thrust out from the ground. Zoe turned into a water stream to dodge, but the spikes were far too numerous and dense; one pierced through her left shoulder. Yin Zhen rushed up and sliced off the spike with a single slash to support Zoe. Gritting her teeth, Zoe condensed the water currents in her palms once again to continue attacking Lilith.

Signal’s voice finally burst from her throat, hoarse and sharp, carrying a sobbing tone. ”She killed our captain, and yet she went to help Chi Hai’s S704 like nothing happened? That damn Ancient Abyss traitor!” The electric arcs in her palms had already lost control. Blue electrical snakes spread down her arms, burning the edges of her sleeves into a charred black.

Dropout’s fist smashed against Bai Qiang’s Spiritual Barrier. Without uttering a single word, she delivered another punch, smashing until her knuckles fractured. The hand Trouble used to hold his gun trembled. He aimed the muzzle at Yin Zhen’s back.

Bai Qiang stepped in front of Trouble’s gun, also blocking Signal and Dropout, who wanted to rush forward and avenge Nan Jiamu. Among them, only Ye Se could still maintain a certain degree of calmness now, because Ye Se still had a daughter in Ancient Abyss; he knew he could not die here.

”Get out of the way!” Signal’s electric arcs whipped against Bai Qiang’s barrier, the blue light blasting countless cracks across the transparent wall.

Bai Qiang’s shoulders swayed slightly, but she continued to stand there without backing down.

”Get the f*ck out of my way! The captain is lying right there! Are you blind? She killed the captain! If we don’t kill her now, she will destroy Ancient Abyss once we return!” Trouble roared with red eyes.

”Can you beat her?” Bai Qiang asked ruthlessly.

Signal stopped her arc-covered hand in midair, while Dropout’s fists creaked as she clenched them tightly.

Ye Se pulled Trouble a half-step back. ”Look at the time. There are only five minutes left until we return. What are these five minutes for? For you to rush up and lie dead beside the captain, or to return alive and figure out what happened today?”

Dropout still clenched her fists, but the force smashing against the barrier loosened. Biting her lip, the electric arcs in Signal’s palms slowly extinguished. Her eye sockets were incredibly red, tears swirling within them, but she forcefully held them back from falling.

”Why did she kill the captain?” Signal asked in agony.

”For revenge!” Bai Qiang said coldly. This was the only thing she could be certain of right now. However, as for the exact grudge and how it came about, she still needed to wait until they returned to investigate. It might not necessarily... be that person’s fault. But she did not even know that person’s true Identity in Ancient Abyss. It had been too chaotic just now, and none of them had heard clearly what those two had been talking about over there. How was she supposed to investigate after returning?

Now, the only thing she could do was to try her best to hold back these few people in front of her. It wasn’t that that person couldn’t kill Trouble and the others; she simply hadn’t. She had chosen to save Zoe first. If Trouble and the others rushed up for revenge now, she would defend herself, and Zoe would help her. For two people capable of facing Lilith head-on to join hands in a desperate situation and counter-kill a few Players whose combat power was far inferior to theirs, it wouldn’t even take thirty seconds.
