The Frail Guide Who Devoured an Entire Pollution Zone

Chapter 152: Chapter 152: The Best Test Subject

Shen Yan frowned, listening to Xu Qingsui’s description with a hint of doubt in his expression.

”Because at the time, I couldn’t clearly explain what was happening. I wasn’t able to help everyone avoid the danger—the only thing I could do was grab you and run. As for the people who were caught in it, there was nothing I could do.”

Seeing Shen Yan’s expression, Xu Qingsui thought he was questioning why she didn’t speak up and save more people.

Hearing Xu Qingsui’s words and realizing she had misunderstood, Shen Yan quickly explained, ”Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not blaming you. I just didn’t expect your Perception of danger to be so strong.”

Xu Qingsui smiled. ”It’s just that my Spiritual Ability is quite strong. Anyone can sense danger; it’s just that the greater one’s Spiritual Ability, the stronger their sense of it.”

Hearing Xu Qingsui say this, a glint appeared in Shen Yan’s eyes.

’As expected, there are so many things about Xu Qingsui worth studying.’

’If she were willing to become a test subject for the lab, they could definitely draw so many more conclusions.’

Shen Yan’s heart leaped with eagerness, but he knew full well there were some things he couldn’t say out loud—at least, not now.

Suppressing the impulse, he nodded and said, ”It seems I still have a lot to explore regarding the subject of Sentinel and guide constitutions.”

Xu Qingsui nodded. ”That’s true. But for now, I think the most important thing to investigate is tonight’s incident. You should look into it thoroughly. I have a feeling something is very wrong with what happened.”

Shen Yan’s gaze deepened. He nodded. ”I’ll arrange for an investigation. But to prevent panic, it will have to be done discreetly.”

As they spoke, they arrived back at the laboratory dormitory. After bidding each other goodnight, they went to their separate rooms.

Although Xu Qingsui had felt a strong sense of unease before, that feeling had slowly faded since the collapse occurred.

’She still felt something was wrong, but that was no longer her problem to worry about.’

Returning to her room, Xu Qingsui quickly washed up and went to bed.

Meanwhile, in the next room, Shen Yan’s mind was still on Xu Qingsui’s unusual reaction from before.

She had sensed the danger so early on. Such Perception was simply astounding.

Remembering Xu Qingsui’s mention of spiritual power, he felt an urgent desire to research the connection between spiritual power and Perception.

If they could really determine the key factors, they could focus their research in that direction.

If they succeeded, they would be able to mitigate risks very effectively.

He desperately wanted Xu Qingsui to join his experiments, to assist him.

But he understood that he couldn’t be too hasty, lest he push Xu Qingsui away.

After thinking for a long time, he reluctantly reined in his excitement.

Then, he began to consider tonight’s incident again.

He didn’t dare ignore Xu Qingsui’s advice. He mulled over arranging a team to descend into the sinkhole and investigate the next day.

Early the next morning, Xu Qingsui was woken by voices from the next room.

Because last night’s incident had been so significant, the rescue team had worked late into the night to bring everyone up.

Not daring to delay, someone came to report to Shen Yan at the crack of dawn.

Xu Qingsui pricked up her ears and listened for a bit, then couldn’t help but sit up in bed.

A staggering one hundred thirty-seven people had fallen into the sinkhole during the collapse last night.

Fortunately, only forty-three of them had minor scrapes; the rest were completely unharmed.

Because so many people were involved, everyone hoped for an explanation.

Chu Tian had already provided an explanation based on Shen Yan’s instructions from yesterday.

But there were still some dissenting voices, and Chu Tian’s message was also that they needed to investigate the matter thoroughly and quickly.

If there really was a problem, it should be resolved as soon as possible. After all, they might not be so lucky next time.

After the report was finished, Shen Yan dismissed the person who delivered it.

Just as the person left, Xu Qingsui also came out of her room.

Shen Yan looked at her and gave a wry smile. ”As you can see, we’re dealing with an urgent situation. I’m afraid I can’t show you around today, either. My apologies. I’ll take you for a proper look around once this is all over.”

Xu Qingsui wasn’t the type to sweat the small stuff. She understood what was important.

”Don’t worry about me. If I feel like looking around, I’ll just go by myself. You should hurry and get to work.”

”One word of advice: if you’re going to go down into the sinkhole to investigate, you must be extremely careful. I still feel like there’s something wrong down there.”

He acknowledged her with a nod and left first.

Xu Qingsui didn’t have much interest in walking around. After thinking it over, she decided to catch up on sleep instead.

After all, during the journey from Zone 9 to the 27th District, even though the camper van was better than sleeping in the wild, it was no match for a real bed. After so long, she was still a little sore.

So she immediately returned to her room to go back to sleep.

She didn’t know how long she had slept before she was once again awakened by a knock on the door.

She specifically looked out the window, worried she had slept until dark again and Shen Yan had come back to call her for dinner.

It was broad daylight outside. She checked the time—it was only just after nine o’clock.

Xu Qingsui frowned. ’Who could be looking for me?’

’She had just arrived in the 27th District. There were very few people she could think of.’

’Shen Yan should still be busy with the matter of the giant sinkhole. He wouldn’t have time.’

’Could it be Shen Yan’s mother again?’

Xu Qingsui was puzzled. This Mrs. Shen was really hard to figure out.

’And yesterday, with the collapse, she’d completely put the matter out of her mind and forgotten to mention it to Shen Yan.’

’After thinking it over, Xu Qingsui figured it was probably Zhang Yuqing.’

’I have to tell Shen Yan when he gets back,’ she thought as she got out of bed and opened the door.

But when the door opened and the face outside came into Xu Qingsui’s view, her heart skipped a beat.

’How could I have forgotten about her!’

’But why is she here to see me again?’

Looking at the pale-faced Liang Xiaoxiao, Xu Qingsui really didn’t know what to say to her.

’There’s no one else around this time. If I say something that makes her faint again, there won’t be any witnesses. What if she blames me for it?’

’I really don’t want to deal with her when we’re alone,’ Xu Qingsui thought, and immediately moved to close the door.

But just as she was closing it, Liang Xiaoxiao, as if guessing her intention, suddenly stuck her arm out to block the door.

Thanks to her quick reflexes, Xu Qingsui saw it in time and pulled back. If she had actually shut the door, she definitely would have hurt Liang Xiaoxiao.

Looking at Liang Xiaoxiao, Xu Qingsui’s face was a picture of exasperation.

”What do you want now? Shen Yan isn’t here. If you two still haven’t cleared things up, you should go find him.”

Xu Qingsui felt exasperated. ’When Shen Yan gets back, I’ll have to get this straight with him. Didn’t they already sort things out?’

’Why is Liang Xiaoxiao still looking for me?’

”I’m not looking for him. I’m here for you. I already know all about you.”
