Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The underground medical bay was quiet, the harsh overhead glare softened by a low-wattage emergency lamp mounted against the wall.

Lin Qing lay back against the thin pillow on the metal cot. Her body still throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, particularly behind her left temple where the heavy concussive impact had taken its toll. Yet, despite her physical exhaustion, her mind remained hyper-vigilant, processing every detail of her surroundings with ruthless efficiency.

Song Yan sat on a wooden stool a few feet away, his arms resting casually over his knees. In a low, measured voice, he had spent the last twenty minutes giving her a brief overview of the world outside—the sudden environmental collapse, the bitter global freeze, the collapse of societal infrastructure, and the emergence of mutated infected that prowled the surface ruins.

Lin Qing listened in silence, her expression an unreadable mask.

To anyone else, waking up with total amnesia only to learn that the world had descended into an apocalyptic nightmare would spark sheer terror or denial. But Lin Qing merely blinked, her dark eyes narrowing slightly as her mind integrated the information.

’It explains the gear,’ she thought, looking down at her sleek tactical vest, the reinforced combat boots, and the specialized sidearm resting on the nearby table. ’It explains why my body moved on instinct the second the door opened.’

She didn’t panic. She didn’t weep or demand proof. Her conditioning simply accepted the harsh reality as an established baseline, immediately pivoting to survival and assessment.

”You accept all of this remarkably fast,” Song Yan noted, a faint glint of surprise in his hazel eyes.

”Denial doesn’t change reality,” Lin Qing replied, her voice raspy, sharp, and pragmatic. ”Panicking won’t fix my head, and it won’t change the fact that we’re underground.”

A light tap sounded at the heavy door, breaking their conversation. The door swung open, and an older woman in a worn medical tunic stepped into the room carrying a fresh tray of medical supplies, clean linen rolls, and a steaming mug of herbal tea.

”That’s enough interrogation for one evening, Song Yan,” the woman said, her voice warm, firm, and maternal as she set the tray down on the side table. ”She was unconscious three hours ago with a concussion that would have cracked an ordinary skull. Let her breathe.”

Song Yan smiled faintly, rising smoothly from his stool. ”I’ll leave you in Auntie Mei’s hands, then. Rest up.” He nodded respectfully toward Lin Qing before stepping out into the corridor, pulling the heavy door shut behind him.

Auntie Mei pulled the wooden stool closer to the cot, dipping a clean cloth into a bowl of warm antiseptic solution. ”How is the head feeling?”

”It throbs,” Lin Qing admitted plainly, allowing the older woman to gently unwrap the stained linen bandage around her forehead. ”It gets worse if I try to remember anything specific.”

”That’s to be expected,” Auntie Mei said gently, dabbing the cool solution against the scalp wound. Her hands were soft, practiced, and remarkably gentle—a stark contrast to the cold, lethal edge Lin Qing felt within her own muscles. ”You took a brutal impact. It’s a miracle Song Yan caught you when he did.”

Lin Qing remained silent for a moment, her eyes tracking Auntie Mei’s steady movements. ”How long has this depot been running?”

”About a little over a month,” Auntie Mei answered, a soft look of pride warming her weathered face. ”When the main surface facilities collapsed, Song Yan gathered those of us who had nowhere else to go. He brought us down here, cleared out the lower levels, and built a sanctuary. He leads us, keeps the power running, and whenever his scouts spot surface survivors or stranded supply teams in the pass, he risks his neck to bring them in.”

Auntie Mei paused, adjusting the fresh bandage around Lin Qing’s head. ”He brought in a family of four just last week from the lower valley. Half-frozen, completely out of rations. Song Yan gave them his own quarters until we cleared out a room.”

Lin Qing absorbed the medic’s words quietly. She remained guarded and naturally suspicious—her instincts warned her never to trust blindly—but she could read people. Auntie Mei’s affection and respect for Song Yan were entirely genuine, devoid of forced propaganda or fear.

In a world broken by chaos and frost, a man who actively used his power to protect civilians, maintain order, and rescue strangers possessed a rare, undeniable honor. A quiet, subtle respect for Song Yan and Auntie Mei began to take root in Lin Qing’s mind.

”Do you remember anything at all?” Auntie Mei asked softly, setting the soiled bandages aside. ”A name? A location? Anything about where you came from?”

Lin Qing closed her eyes, attempting to force her mind past the thick, suffocating wall of fog in her head. She tried to picture a face, a room, or a voice—

Suddenly, a violent, white-hot spike of agony flared behind her temples. Her breath hitched sharply, a cold, sudden sweat breaking out across her forehead and collarbone as her jaw clenched tight.

”Alright, stop! Stop right there,” Auntie Mei commanded immediately, placing a firm, warm hand on Lin Qing’s shoulder. ”Don’t force it. Neural trauma doesn’t heal by sheer willpower. You’ll give yourself a brain bleed if you keep pressing against the blockade.”

Lin Qing exhaled slowly through her nose, opening her eyes as the agonizing pressure gradually receded into a dull throb. She wiped a bead of cold sweat from her brow with the back of her hand.

”I can’t recall names or places,” Lin Qing rasped, her tone grim but calm. ”But I know what I am. Look at my uniform. Look at the modifications on this vest, the weapon maintenance, the physical conditioning. I wasn’t just a survivor wandering the snow. I was a soldier. I belonged to an organized squad... or a base.”

Auntie Mei nodded understandingly, picking up the mug of warm tea and handing it to her. ”A soldier. Yes, that makes sense. None of the scavengers we pull off the mountain carry gear like yours.”

The medic gave her a reassuring, gentle pat on the arm. ”Drink this. It will help with the fever. Don’t worry about where you belong right now. You take your time to rest and heal. Once your strength is back and you can walk without collapsing, Song Yan will help you look for your people. He knows the mountain routes better than anyone.”

”Thank you, Auntie Mei,” Lin Qing said quietly, taking a small sip of the warm tea. The gesture was simple, but her acknowledgment was sincere.

Further down the central corridor, in the depot’s primary assembly room, a large map of the southern ridge was spread out across a metal conference table.

Song Yan stood at the head of the table, flanked by six team leaders representing the depot’s key operational divisions—logistics, engineering, medical, perimeter security, and scouting teams.

”That covers the weekly ration distribution,” Song Yan said, his voice deep and authoritative as he rolled up a supply ledger. ”Now, onto the situation from earlier.”

The team leaders straightened up, their expressions becoming serious. Word had already spread through the narrow stone hallways that Song Yan had returned carrying a heavily injured, female soldier.

”She woke up an hour ago,” Song Yan informed them plainly. ”She is stable, but she is suffering from a severe concussion and total memory loss. I brought her here to save her life, not to interrogate her or turn her into an asset.”

He leaned forward, pressing his palms against the table surface as his sharp hazel eyes swept across every leader in the room.

”I am issuing a strict directive to all teams,” Song Yan stated firmly. ”No one enters the medical wing without Auntie Mei’s explicit permission. No one bothers her, questions her, or tries to pry into her background. She is our guest, and she will be treated with absolute respect and given full peace to recover. Is that clear?”

The team leaders nodded in immediate, unanimous agreement.

”Understood, Captain,” the head of engineering replied. ”We’ll keep the maintenance crews away from the medical corridor to keep the noise down.”

”Good. Dismissed,” Song Yan ordered.

As the meeting adjourned, the team leaders filed out into the dim stone hallway, their boot heels clicking against the cold floor as they headed back to their respective posts.

Two section heads walked side-by-side down the main corridor, speaking in low, measured tones.

”Did you catch a look at the gear Song Yan brought in with her?” one of them asked, pulling his collar up against the ambient chill.

”That tactical vest wasn’t scavenged from old municipal stockpiles. High-grade alloy plates, specialized cold-weather insulation...”

”I saw it,” the other replied, nodding slowly.

”Pristine condition, too.”

A few steps behind them, the leader of security division listened quietly to their conversation. He slowed his stride, his brow furrowing as the word military echoed down the narrow stone passageway.

”Military gear, you say?” the Security Leader spoke up, his deep, gravelly voice drawing the attention of the two ahead.

The two section heads paused, turning back to face him. ”Yeah. Top-tier equipment.”

The older Security Leader folded his heavy arms over his chest, a distant, thoughtful look settling into his eyes as a memory surfaced.

”Hearing you mention a military personnel with that level of gear... it reminds me of something,” the Security Leader said softly, his voice carrying a quiet weight. ”A while back, before we made it down into this depot, my people and I were in a bad spot on the surface.

A group of heavily armed military personnel stepped in and helped us out when we needed it most. True benefactors.”

He looked down the dark hallway toward the medical wing, a subtle glint of curiosity in his eyes.
