Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The morning of the excursion arrived with a biting, relentless wind that howled like a dying beast against the exterior of the mountain fortress. The storm outside had been building since the middle of the night, throwing thick sheets of crystallized ice against the sheer rock faces of the peak.

Inside the primary residential suite, the atmosphere was thick with a disciplined, quiet preparation. The brief, luxurious window for rest had officially concluded, and the grim reality of the unforgiving wasteland pressed heavily against their brief sanctuary.

There was no room for complacency here; the fortress was a safe haven, but a haven could only survive if its inhabitants were willing to step out into the jaws of hell to secure its future.

Inside the warmth of the living quarters, the silence was punctuated only by the crisp snaps of tactical gear being buckled. Lin Qing stood near the edge of the living area, adjusting the heavy straps of her thigh holster. She checked the mechanical action on her sidearm, pulling the slide back just enough to ensure a round was chambered before smoothly clicking the safety back into place.

Her wound was mostly healed now and every movement she made was fluid and precise. In the apocalypse, hesitation was a luxury that cost lives, and she had no intention of paying that price.

Across the room, near the exit, Han Zheng stood like an unyielding monolith, finalizing the lockdown protocols with Lieutenant Chen and Zhou Ming. Zhou Ming’s extensive training as a field medic made him the most logical and valuable choice to leave behind. While Lieutenant Chen managed the primary security feeds and automated base defense systems, Zhou Ming would monitor the children’s physical recovery and manage their needs.

”If the outer perimeter sensors along the lower ridge trigger an alert, or if our comms cut out for more than four hours, you seal the residential floor completely,” Han Zheng commanded, his voice cutting through the quiet room with absolute authority. His eyes were fixed on the lieutenant, burning with an intense severity. ”Drop the blast barriers, isolate the ventilation shafts, and lock down the internal lifts. No one enters, and no one leaves until visual confirmation is established by me personally. Clear?”

”Understood, Commander,” Lieutenant Chen replied, his posture snapping into a perfectly straight military line as he accepted the master security override token. ”The interior will remain an absolute ghost fortress. Nothing gets past us.”

Lin Qing turned her gaze away from her gear, her dark eyes sweeping over the three children sitting near the common area.

”Keep up with your training while we are away,” Lin Qing stated firmly, her voice carrying a clear, instructional weight that brooked no argument. Her dark eyes swept over Han Ye and Gu An. ”Do not venture out into the main laboratory corridors under any circumstances. Stay inside the confines of this suite, listen to the soldiers’ directives without hesitation, and stay safe.”

”Yes,” Gu An said, nodding with a serious, disciplined expression that mirrored the focus of a miniature soldier.

Beside her, Han Ye offered a slow, solemn nod. His eyes locked onto Lin Qing’s face, carrying a profound, hidden weight of memories from a timeline that no longer existed. He waited patiently, watching the adults move about the room. Seizing a brief, calculated moment when Han Zheng stepped toward the heavy storage locker to retrieve an extra ammunition crate, Han Ye drifted closer to Lin Qing’s side. His movements were completely silent, and his voice dropped to a barely audible whisper that didn’t reach the soldiers’ ears.

”The electronic district down the basin isn’t empty,” Han Ye murmured, his small face entirely devoid of childish innocence, his gaze direct and piercing.

”In the lower basement of the central warehouse—the one with the faded blue logo—a partial structural collapse has formed a massive ice cavern. Do not use fire or explosives there. The underground gas lines beneath the ice sheet are severely cracked from the early days of the collapse, but the leaking fuel is currently frozen solid under the pressure. A single stray spark, a heavy thermal flare, or an open flame will thaw the line instantly and detonate the entire area of the basin.”

Lin Qing’s eyes narrowed into sharp, calculative slits as she absorbed the terrifyingly specific warning. She didn’t question his words, she already knew by now that Han Ye was a regressed soul.

Without a word, she simply filed the data away into the deepest layer of her mind, acknowledging the silent, fierce protection the boy was offering her from afar. She gave him a small nod of understanding, signaling that the message was locked in.

Before she turned her back to leave, her gaze briefly landed on Su Xiao. The little girl was still physically drained from her grueling genetic mutation. Having been picked up by the roadside by the group, she was still fundamentally a quiet, distant observer.

But as she watched the adults prepare to step back into the dangerous cold, her large, dark eyes mirrored a distinct, heavy sadness. She didn’t move or speak, but her small hands gripped the edge of her fleece blanket a little tighter, watching their impending departure with a lingering sense of vulnerability.

With a final, decisive nod to the guards, Lin Qing and Han Zheng exited the residential suite. The heavy iron door hissed shut, the bolts slamming into the steel frame with a deafening click that echoed down the empty, sterile hallway.

Down in the lower loading bay, the air was thick with the sharp smell of diesel, cold grease, and ozone. The two heavy military transport trucks were already idling, their massive engines vibrating against the floor blocks, producing a low rumble. Dr. Zhou was waiting anxiously beside the lead vehicle, holding a heavy plastic crate filled with a thick, dark, and pungent chemical paste.

”We’ve successfully synthesized the heavy silicone-and-carbon polymer compound from the material science lab,” Dr. Zhou explained quickly, wiping a thick smudge of black grease from her forehead with the back of her hand. ”We gathered every available canister from the chemical storage units. If your data about the mutants is correct, and they truly hunt via tracking environmental heat signatures, this paste is your absolute best line of defense.”

Lin Qing didn’t hesitate for a single second. She dropped her pack onto a metal bench, rolled her sleeves up past her elbows, and actively worked alongside Dr. Zhou. Grabbing a heavy industrial brush, she plunged her hands into the task, applying the heavy, viscous paste to the entire exhaust manifold, the exposed engine blocks, and the interior insulation shields of both transport trucks.

It was a tedious, exhausting, and filthy task, but Lin Qing’s movements were entirely efficient, calculated to cover every square inch of heat-emitting metal. The chemical compound was specifically engineered to absorb and rapidly dissipate high-frequency infrared heat signatures. To the naked eye, the trucks looked exactly the same—rugged, grime-covered military transports. But to any heat-seeking mutated beasts lurking in the dark, the moving vehicles would appear as completely cold, invisible blocks moving through the snow.

Han Zheng stood by the rear of the vehicle, securing the heavy cargo straps, but his gaze constantly drifted back toward Lin Qing. He watched her work without a single word of complaint, her face focused and her technique flawless.

His silent respect for her survival intellect, her adaptability, and her mind deepened yet again. She wasn’t just someone he had to protect in this wasteland; she was an invaluable, formidable partner who anticipated every deadly variable before it could manifest.

Once the application was completely finished, the remaining elite soldiers of the Vanguard squad mounted the covered rear beds of the vehicles, their silent melee weapons, sharpened steel axes, and high-caliber firearms locked and loaded. Lin Qing wiped her blackened hands with a rough rag, climbed into the high driver’s seat of the lead transport, and gripped the wheel. Han Zheng slid into the passenger side beside her, his long legs stretching out as his hand rested casually over the barrel of his primary rifle.

”Open the outer gates,” Han Zheng radioed into the base comms.

The primary doors of the mountain bunker groaned heavily under the immense pressure of the mechanisms, slowly parting to reveal a blinding, roaring wall of pure white winter blizzard. The wind shrieked as it rushed into the opening, throwing loose flurries of ice into the garage.

Lin Qing shifted the heavy truck into gear and pressed her boot down on the accelerator. The muffled, thermally masked trucks slowly rolled forward, leaving the safety of the concrete fortress behind. They disappeared instantly into the freezing, chaotic maw of the raging storm, beginning their perilous, silent descent down the treacherous slopes.

Meanwhile, fifteen kilometers down the jagged mountain ridge, the suffocating silence inside the makeshift refugee shelter was violently shattered.

The heavy wooden door was thrown open with a loud bang, letting a freezing gust of snow and howling wind invade the damp room. A ragged camp scout stumbled across the threshold, his face completely pale from exhaustion, his breath coming in short, frantic gasps.

He had run straight down the mountain slopes through the blinding storm, pushing his body to the absolute limit after watching the fortress gates part. He collapsed heavily against a wooden table, desperately trying to draw air into his burning lungs.

Lin Tao, who had still been brooding over his intense humiliation near the dying glow of a small oil lamp, jolted upright. From the darkest, most shadow-drenched corner of the room, the mysterious figure slowly opened his eyes, locking onto the breathless messenger.

”Speak,” he commanded, his voice a low, dangerous rasp that filled the small cabin with an instant, suffocating pressure.

The scout swallowed hard, wiping the frozen sweat from his brow with a trembling hand as he looked between Lin Tao and the hooded man. ”There’s... there’s movement at the mountain fortress,” the scout panted, his chest heaving. ”The primary gate just opened. I was staked out near the ridge—I saw Lin Qing and Han Zheng personally leading the column out. They just left with two heavy transport trucks, fully loaded with soldiers and gear, and disappeared into the blizzard heading down the southern slope.”

Lin Tao’s eyes instantly lit up with a vicious, vindictive malice, his fists clenching tight as he turned his head toward the shadows. ”They’re out in the open. The arrogant bitch actually left the safety of the peak!”

The mysterious figure slowly rose from his chair, his towering frame casting a long, ominous shadow across the dirt floor. A cold, calculating smirk cut through the darkness beneath his hood, his mind already shifting pieces into place on the board.

He glanced back at the trembling scout, then fixed his piercing gaze on Lin Tao, his voice dripping with absolute authority and low malice.

”The nest is vulnerable, and the prey is on the move,” the stranger murmured, stepping out of the shadows. He adjusted his clothes and turned to the rest of the gathered survivors. ”Stop shivering and get on your feet. Everyone, prepare immediately. We move out.”
