Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The synchronized rhythm of their labor had been agonizingly precise, but efficiency had won out against the elements. By the time the final, massive industrial inverter block was cleared and checked by Lin Qing’s digital tester, Xiao Li had hauled the last of the vital cargo out into the staging area beneath the warped steel shutter.

Operating under the cover of the blinding whiteout, Old Wang and Lin Qing had moved with frantic, disciplined haste. They didn’t risk loading the gear out in the open courtyard where a stray look from the ridges might spot them. Instead, Old Wang had silently reversed the primary military transport truck right up to the edge of the building’s concrete awning, while Lin Qing brought the secondary truck around. Working as a cohesive unit, they hoisted the heavy, tested electronics into the reinforced cargo beds, securing them under heavy canvas tarps.

They were just throwing the final tie-down straps over the pallets when the shortwave radio clipped to Lin Qing’s tactical vest burst to life with a sharp, crackling hiss.

”Lin Qing, do you copy? Respond immediately,” Han Zheng’s voice cut through the static, sounding lower and more urgent than usual.

Lin Qing pressed the receiver, her eyes scanning the snowy perimeter. ”I copy. We’ve just finished loading the trucks. The cargo is secure.”

”The tail on the ridge wasn’t a small scouting party,” Han Zheng reported, his breath ragged against the freezing wind on his end. ”Eliminating them took longer than anticipated. They are high-frequency scouts, and they’ve already signaled a larger column. Lin Tao’s faction or their backers are moving to seal the primary highway. They are descending into the basin right now. You have minutes before they flood the wholesale district.”

Lin Qing’s eyes narrowed into hard slits. Han Zheng’s warning didn’t panic her; instead, it sent a cold, analytical focus rushing through her veins. She looked at the heavy trucks, then back toward the gaping, dark mouth of Building C-4 where the unstable blue ice cavern hummed with pressurized chemical gas.

”Understood,” Lin Qing said into the radio, her voice flat and deadly calm. ”We’ll buy ourselves a window. Meet us at the southern extraction path. Out.”

She clipped the radio back to her vest and turned to Old Wang and Xiao Li. ”We have a few minutes before their forward scouts hit this courtyard. We aren’t running yet. We’re setting a trap.”

Old Wang wiped a layer of frost from his brow, a grim, knowing smile touching his slightly cracked lips. ”What’s the play, boss?”

”They’re looking for a fresh haul, and they’re tracking our movements,” Lin Qing said, her mind spinning the pieces into place with brutal efficiency. ”If we drive straight out, they’ll catch our tail lights in the storm. We make them think we’re trapped inside.”

Lin Qing immediately ordered the trucks to move. They drove the two massive transports away from Building C-4, navigating the frozen alleyways of the district until they reached a completely detached, concrete warehouse at the absolute edge of the perimeter. They parked the vehicles deep behind the structural shadow of the building, ensuring the chassis were entirely hidden from the main thoroughfare and any ridge-line optics.

Once the trucks were concealed, they went to work on the snow. Using heavy rubber mats from the trucks and the natural force of the swirling blizzard, they meticulously erased the heavy, compressed tire marks leading toward their true hiding spot.

Then, Lin Qing and Old Wang deliberately marched backward from the edge of the hidden warehouse toward the main entrance of Building C-4, stomping their heavy combat boots deep into the fresh snow drifts. They created a highly visible, undeniable trail of frantic footprints that led directly from the gates of the district straight into the narrow two-foot gap beneath the frozen shutter of the blue-logo warehouse. To anyone arriving in a hurry, it looked like a textbook panic retreat—a squad trapped by the storm, seeking shelter inside the nearest building.

Just as Xiao Li slipped behind the structural concrete pillar of an adjacent building to lie in wait, the low, mechanical rumble of modified engines cut through the howling wind.

Two light armored scout vehicles barreled into the central courtyard, their tires throwing up plumes of grey slush. The doors flew open, and seven heavily armed men stepped out into the freezing air, their weapons raised as they scanned the whiteout.

”Look here!” the lead scout shouted, pointing his gloved finger down at the pristine, deep footprints cutting through the snow. ”Fresh tracks. They didn’t have time to clear them before the blizzard caught them.”

In their sudden rush of joy and greed, thinking they had trapped the Vanguard squad with their hands on the prize, the scouts’ discipline crumbled. Eager to claim the high-grade electronics and corner their targets, they didn’t even bother to sweep the wider perimeter for heavy truck tire marks. They assumed the vehicles were parked further back or that the squad had traveled on foot.

”They went inside C-4,” another scout growled, peering under the narrow gap of the warped steel shutter. ”They’re cornered like rats. Come on, before they find another exit!”

The men filed in one after the other, sliding on their stomachs beneath the two-foot gap, their flashlights cutting into the dark interior of the frozen tomb. They left a single, lone guard standing outside the shutter, his back turned to the courtyard as he watched the perimeter with his rifle held loosely across his chest.

The moment the last scout disappeared inside the building, the shadow behind the adjacent concrete pillar shifted.

Xiao Li emerged into the blinding snow like a silent juggernaut. He didn’t use his firearms; he didn’t even draw a blade. He closed the distance in three massive, completely silent strides, his boots barely making a sound in the deep drifts.

Before the guard could even register a shift in the air pressure behind him, Xiao Li’s massive, stone-clad hand shot out from his winter coat. He activated his ’Earth Hardening’ power instantly, his fingers turning into an unyielding vise of molecularly hardened minerals. He clamped his hand over the guard’s throat, completely crushing his vocal cords before a scream could escape, while his secondary hand snapped the man’s spine with a singular, brutal twist.

The guard went completely limp. Xiao Li caught the body silently, lowering it into the snow without a sound.

Without wasting a heartbeat, Xiao Li stepped directly up to the warped steel shutter. He looked at the heavy, structural iron support beam that he had wedged beneath the frame earlier to keep it open.

With a low, controlled grunt, Xiao Li kicked the base of the iron pillar.

BANG.

Without the iron support to hold its massive weight, the thousands of pounds of warped steel and solid black ice collapsed instantly. The heavy rolling shutter slammed down into the concrete foundation with a deafening, echoing crash that reverberated through the entire structure of Building C-4. The impact completely sealed the narrow gap, anchoring the metal shutter deep into the frozen floor blocks once again.

Inside the warehouse, the sudden, violent vibration of the shutter slamming shut sent a massive shockwave ruffling through the spectacular blue ice cavern. Deep within the crystalline structure, the thick ice sheets holding the cracked, pressurized municipal gas mains groaned. Jagged, spiderweb fractures began to ripple rapidly through the translucent ice blocks. The faint, sharp smell of chemical rot suddenly exploded into a heavy, hissing rush of escaping gas.

Inside the darkness, the scouts screamed in sudden terror as their tactical flashlights caught the ceiling shifting above them, realizing too late that the entrance was sealed and the very air around them was turning into a volatile bomb.

Outside, the courtyard was a stark contrast of cold, calculated movement. The moment the shutter slammed shut, the low, powerful growl of a muffled engine broke the silence. Old Wang barreled into the courtyard driving the secondary transport truck, the passenger door already swinging open against the wind.

Xiao Li didn’t wait for the vehicle to come to a complete halt. He sprinted alongside the moving truck, hoisted his massive frame up, and hopped cleanly inside the cab, slamming the heavy door shut behind him.

”The cage is locked!” Xiao Li grunted, his stone armor melting away from his arms.

”Good riddance,” Old Wang growled, smashing his boot down onto the accelerator. The heavy tires gripped the icy asphalt, throwing up a cloud of frozen spray as the truck roared out of the courtyard.

Ahead of them, the lead transport truck was already moving. Lin Qing steered the heavy vehicle through the twisting, narrow exits of the electronic wholesale district, her eyes locked onto the southern extraction route. Behind them, the monolithic silhouette of Building C-4 faded into the blinding white chaos of the blizzard, holding its new prisoners fast in a tomb of silent, leaking ice. They had the gear, the perimeter was broken, and they were rapidly driving away into the heart of the storm.
