She Lives without Regret in This Life

When Gu Yunbo came out of the school, Meng Fan had already left. She didn’t go back either, instead she wandered aimlessly along the street, seeing if she could find some work and pick up odd jobs.

Days with not a single cent to her name were really too hard to endure! Back in Country M, she could still go to the Gambling City to work as muscle and earn some quick cash. Now, well, she’d made a whole round and hadn’t found anything.

At noon her stomach growled. She took out the only one yuan she had left, spent fifty cents at the State-owned Restaurant to buy two meat buns, and squatted by the roadside to eat. The girl’s figure was thin, her clothes were also flimsy; from a distance she looked downright pitiful.

While eating, Gu Yunbo pondered how to make money and casually asked the auntie selling buns, ”Auntie, do you people here need someone to wash dishes?”

”No, no.” Tch, still wants to fight them for work? No way.

”Oh!” Gu Yunbo wasn’t disappointed either; she kept her head down and continued eating. She quickly finished one meat bun. Just as she was about to eat the second, a hand reached over. She grabbed it in reverse and tossed the owner over her shoulder.

But the other party reacted fast. Even though he hit the ground, he landed easily and steadied himself.

”As expected, claws bared and teeth flashing.” Gu Sinian clicked his tongue and said.

Gu Yunbo gave him a cold glance. ”What do you want?”

”You’re just eating this for lunch?” Gu Sinian squatted down beside her, a head taller than she was. He reached out and rubbed her hair, only to be pushed away in disgust by Gu Yunbo.

”I’m warning you, stay away from me, or I’ll make you pay.”

”But I already look pretty good.”

Gu Yunbo rolled her eyes at him. ”Such a big face. Who gave you that courage?”

”Isn’t confidence something a man is just born with?”

”That’s arrogance, not confidence.”

Gu Sinian said with a half-smile, ”In your eyes, is Meng Fan the only one who looks good? The only one who’s confident?”

Gu Yunbo ignored him and kept eating her meat bun. Since her Rebirth, she hadn’t had such a delicious bun yet! Lots of filling, thin skin; taking a big bite was especially satisfying.

Only in the seventies could you buy buns this big and this cheap.

”Why aren’t you answering?” Gu Sinian suddenly pinched her chin, forcing her to look at him.

”Do I even need to say it? Aren’t you just talking nonsense?”

”Heh... Found yourself a powerful backer and your courage has definitely grown.” After he went back last night, he heard his little sister talk about what had happened at the Provincial Rescue Center: some girl, dressed boldly, pale and skinny, had, in front of everyone, said she wanted to be Meng Fan’s partner.

Although Meng Fan hadn’t answered, it was enough to give everyone something to gossip about.

As soon as he heard it, he knew exactly who it was. Good! This girl really did have guts—guts that exceeded his expectations.

”I heard you don’t know who I am?” He sneered.

Gu Yunbo pulled his hand away, smearing all the bun grease onto his fingers.

Gu Sinian immediately showed a look of disgust.

”Your little sister really loves running to complain. As I said—sure enough, birds of a feather flock together. Not a single good one among you.” He clearly knew what kind of person his own sister was, yet he still had the nerve to come looking for her.

Gu Sinian caught her implication and said ambiguously, ”What kind of person I am, my sister knows very well.”

”But what kind of person I am, you probably still don’t.” She finished the last bite of the bun, and while Gu Sinian wasn’t paying attention, she secretly wiped the grease from her hand onto his clothes. Then she stood up and bolted. Her figure was as quick and agile as a rabbit, and in no time she’d vanished from sight.

”Young master?” The burly man who’d been watching from the side hurried over, startled by Gu Sinian’s dark expression. ”I’ll go after her!”
