She Lives without Regret in This Life

On a winter afternoon, sipping on rich red tea, appreciating the snow scene outside the floor-to-ceiling window, listening to stories about Gu Yunbo.

”Gu Yunbo, this girl, is truly an extraordinary person. Even when compared to you, she’s miles ahead.”

It was rare to hear Su Hai express such admiration for someone, especially a woman. Sheng Ning couldn’t help but feel even more curious. She recalled the time she first sought her help in Chinatown, heavily pregnant.

That domineering aura, rebellious gaze, and alluring figure. Hmm... certainly not something an ordinary woman could compare to.

”Gu Yunbo grew up in the countryside, with an unknown father and a mother who was one of the educated youth sent to the countryside. Back then, life was tough, but her mother was reportedly very outstanding, being one of only two in the county to qualify to return to the city. For some unknown reason, before she could return, there was a scandal — someone anonymously reported her pregnancy. Because of this, the city spot was handed to her good friend, and Gu Yunbo’s mother went mad before giving birth, and died a few years after. It’s said that Gu Yunbo grew up on the charity of numerous families, and one can only imagine what kind of life she had.

Sheng Ning felt a pang in her heart. She had always thought herself unfortunate, not realizing that Gu Yunbo went through even tougher experiences. It was a different era; for an educated youth to be unmarried and pregnant, not even knowing who the man was, who knows what she went through as a child.

At least in her childhood, Sheng Ning had a father who loved her, and her stepmother was reasonable and kind.

But as for Gu Yunbo? She had nothing.

Su Hai gave Sheng Ning a meaningful look, ruffled her hair, and said, ”There’s no need to sympathize with Gu Yunbo. Someone like her doesn’t need anyone’s sympathy.”

”Why?” Sheng Ning asked, puzzled.

”Because she took her revenge!” Su Hai said with a playful look when it came to revenge, ”That’s why I said she’s amazing! When she was sixteen, she was adopted by a classmate of her mother’s and brought back to the city. Although she didn’t have the best material life, she received the best education. She attended a high school for the children of workers, one that only kids from military compounds could go to.”

”The person who took her in?”

”That’s right, it’s exactly as you think, it was the fellow educated youth who took her mother’s spot to return to the city.” Su Hai finished speaking, blinking mischievously, ”The one who reported her mother.”

”What?” Sheng Ning gasped, covering her mouth and staring with wide eyes. She never imagined something like this could happen.

”Perhaps because of a guilty conscience from the wrongdoings of the past, their conscience never let them rest for all those years, and so they took Gu Yunbo in as an act of atonement.”

”Did Yunbo know?”

”Of course she knew. If it were someone as clueless as you, maybe not. But Gu Yunbo is smart! In less than three years of living in that house, she destroyed the family of four.” Su Hai concluded with a schadenfreude smile, ”Hahaha... Eventually, the man of the house shot himself, and we only found out after she disappeared.”

”What?” Sheng Ning gasped, looking up at the woman focusing intently on a landscape painting on the second-floor corridor. From the side, one could see the delicate profile of Gu Yunbo. Beneath the facade, she’s a person with a soft heart.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have relented and helped after initially refusing.

”I admire her so much!” Sheng Ning said sincerely. She felt useless herself, having died pathetically in her past life, and it was only Heaven’s mercy giving her a chance for rebirth that allowed her to seek revenge.
