She Lives without Regret in This Life

At this moment, a fair-skinned, refined middle-aged man pushed the gold-rimmed glasses up his nose and jokingly said, ”Alright, Old Fan, stop being cryptic. You handle many important tasks every day, don’t tell me you came all the way here just to see us old folks for nothing.”

He was the minister of the Ministry of Commerce, named Zheng Xingzhi, and he had quite a longstanding relationship with the second-in-command.

Fan Hengyan was unsure of how significant this news was, though, to him, a straightforward man, it seemed important. However, these intellectuals always liked to oppose him.

What if they dismissed it? Wouldn’t that be embarrassing for him?

”Speak up!”

Seeing him keep them in suspense, everyone became even more curious.

”Old Fan, I’m swamped here, don’t tell me you’re here to mock me?”

”What are you saying? A rough person like me wanting to mock an intellectual like you?”

”No, no, no...” Minister Zheng had been fooled before, and would be the first to disagree if anyone claimed that the rescuer was a rough character. Su Huili was originally from the rescue team; who dared to say he was rough?

”Please don’t make fun of us. You, Old Fan, are the model we learn from.”

Fan Hengyan waved his hand and said with a serious expression, ”I really do have a matter that’s neither big nor small.”

”Go ahead.” Somehow, they felt that Old Fan’s visit today was rather unusual.

”So, one of my old subordinates has been detained in Country M and hasn’t returned yet?”

Almost everyone knew about this matter, and when Fan Hengyan mentioned it, everyone nodded knowingly.

”Did something happen?” Minister Zheng wondered. Your old subordinate is now in politics; it wouldn’t help even if you told them.

”The real reason Su Hai is detained in Country M is that he’s helping your Ministry of Commerce attract foreign investors.”

”Really? Is there such a good thing?”

”Isn’t it all for the good of the country, for the good of the people?”

”Of course it’s true.” Fan Hengyan glared, ”You intellectuals are always scheming, yet you won’t admit it. Do you think I would make this up?”

”Sorry, I apologize, I apologize. Do you know which foreign investor he’s bringing from Country M?” As Minister Zheng asked, he had already pulled out a thick notebook from a drawer. It recorded famous foreign enterprises, including those they hoped to partner with for investment and co-operation.

Seventy percent of the records in the notebook were enterprises from Country M, and the Feng Family was prominently featured.

Fan Hengyan leaned in to take a look, and casually pointed at the name of the Feng Family, saying, ”It’s this one. I heard the Feng Family plans to shift their focus back to the domestic market in the future, and they’re very sincere.”

Minister Zheng’s hand trembled uncontrollably, holding the notebook, ”The Feng Family? That’s excellent, excellent. We’ve been working on reform and opening up for nearly five years; we’re finally making a breakthrough.”

Yet the Ministry of Commerce didn’t fully grasp the power of the Feng Family in the business world.

”What kind of sincerity? Tell us, quickly tell us.” The refined and elegant middle-aged man was as excited as a child.

”I heard from Su Hai that it might be a hundred billion in foreign currency.”

”...”

”...”

The office was silent, with only the sound of people swallowing.

Fan Hengyan frowned, ”What? Are you all thinking a hundred billion is too little?” These intellectuals indeed had large appetites and lofty standards.

”Fan Hengyan, do you know how significant this is?” Minister Zheng’s voice was hoarse, his eyes bloodshot as he looked at him, ”Such important news, and you’re only telling us now? It’s impressive how calm you’ve been.”

”...” What’s wrong with this person?

”Old Fan, don’t be upset; our Minister is just... excited, excited...” My goodness! This huge blessing dropped on them, and they were already dizzy.

A hundred billion, a hundred billion... The entire country’s foreign exchange reserves were bound to experience a qualitative leap, and their stance in international trade would be more confident. The Feng Family being so generous, they must secure the best policy possible.

They must ensure no patriotic businessman feels disheartened.
