Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 210: Chapter 33: Butchering Bear Meat

Yukon River Valley.

Hua Yun’s handling of the grizzly was equally gruesome.

She skinned the grizzly bear in one piece, and in the process, she made a point to glance at where she had shot the bear.

As expected, though she had hit it and the shot was deep.

But the grizzly bear’s fat was just too thick, the arrowhead only caused minor damage to the internal organs, not a fatal wound.

It’s like using a level-one birdshot to hunt a level-nine plains bison in some hunting game.

Aiming at the heart, but hitting the surface.

The damage was completely not on the same level.

”If the grizzly bear were a bit thinner, like just after hibernation ends, or if it were an American black bear, these two arrows would probably have killed it.”

Chen Wen walked over, pointing out.

Hua Yun nodded slightly, the feeling of doubting herself was slowly fading away.

This time the problem was underestimating the information, not a lack of archery skills.

”We should also collect this fat, it’s especially for eating.”

Hua Yun said, ”The beaver fat collected before might have parasites. Eating it might cause diseases, which is why I haven’t let you cook it.”

Hearing this, Chen Wen nodded slightly.

He knew this, but Chen Wen had planned to rely on [enhanced digestion] to deal with the parasites.

But now with the grizzly bear’s fat, everything was not a problem.

The grizzly bear’s fat was enough for him and Hua Yun until survival ended.

And after further processing, the beaver’s fat could be used as antifreeze cream.

After skinning, they gutted the bear.

By this time, no one dared to stay before Chen Wen and Hua Yun’s monitoring screen.

After all, the scenes of processing animals were very bloody.

...

Chen Wen and Hua Yun painstakingly cleared out the grizzly bear’s internal organs.

”This bear is really heavy! And really fat!”

Chen Wen, pulling the organs around, said, ”Damn, these intestines alone must weigh dozens of pounds, right? If handling them wasn’t so difficult, the intestines alone would last us several meals.”

”Just about.”

Hua Yun pulled out the bear’s heart, ”This grizzly bear might weigh about six hundred pounds, which is very large even among North American grizzlies.”

Hearing this, Chen Wen couldn’t help but say, ”This guy is almost as heavy as a polar bear, right?”

Hua Yun nodded, ”Female polar bears maybe, but still lighter than male polar bears. Adult male polar bears weigh over half a ton, though their body lengths should be quite similar, this grizzly bear is quite long.”

”Enough of that, come on, I’ll cut down its meat and fat, and we’ll carry them back in batches!”

With that, Hua Yun picked up the machete, chopping away, she dismembered the grizzly bear’s limbs from the joints.

Then with the help of Chen Wen, she used an axe and machete to split the grizzly bear in two from the spine.

Chen Wen grabbed the Golden Eagle trying to fly back and had it take the bear’s head away.

And asked it to come back again to take away a bear leg.

This made the Golden Eagle very frustrated.

But the Golden Eagle still did it, since it felt its future wealth depended on Chen Wen.

Having eaten its fill, doing some work wasn’t too much to ask.

Watching the Golden Eagle drag the bear’s head away, Chen Wen nodded in satisfaction.

Thinking it could freeload without working was very naive.

He had neither the time nor resources to support the Golden Eagle without it contributing.

”This should take three trips.”

Hua Yun gestured towards the North American grizzly bear’s body, saying, ”Each half in one trip, we’ll carry them on our backs, and the remaining three legs and skin in one trip.”

”No problem.”

Chen Wen didn’t boast about his strength, knowing that being able to kill the grizzly bear was already enough to showcase his prowess.

In the past, those wilderness survival streamers always got some title like ’Master’ or ’Big Bro.’

If our survival journey gets broadcasted, we could be called ’Bear Bro’ too, right?

Wouldn’t that be great!

Chen Wen chuckled to himself as he and Hua Yun carried the grizzly bear back to the shelter.

But just as they left the area.

A shadowy figure crept out of the forest cautiously.

The shadow didn’t approach immediately but retreated slowly into the depths of the fir forest after observing.

...

Back and forth three times left Chen Wen and Hua Yun exhausted.

Their hunting this time had kept them busy until nightfall, causing them to miss lunch, and this greatly annoyed Chen Wen.

”Three meals a day need to be regular, no binge eating.”

While starting a fire, he said, ”For those of us doing wilderness survival, having irregular meals is really unhealthy!”

As she cut the meat, Hua Yun said helplessly, ”You’re surviving in the wild and still thinking about health?”

”In our profession, once you hit your forties and fifties, it’s saying goodbye. Take Mr. Liu, for example. He stopped wilderness survival at forty.”

”But that’s also related to the medical environment back then. Our current medical environment is quite good, with many diseases treatable.”

At this, Hua Yun said, ”After we get back this time, you should come with me to our association’s partner hospital for a systematic check-up. After wilderness survival, both our mental and physical health can be greatly affected. In the early days of our field, some predecessors passed away due to hidden injuries and psychological issues.”

Upon hearing this, Chen Wen didn’t refuse.

Even though he believed he had no psychological issues, and hidden injuries could be cured completely through [Tenacious Life].

But getting checked out won’t do any harm.

At this moment, Hua Yun had finished cutting the meat.

Chen Wen sliced some grizzly bear fat and placed it in the pot to render out the oil.

After the oil was released, he scooped out the crispy remains and placed the bear meat back into the pot for frying.

Tonight’s dinner was fried bear foreleg meat, paired with some bearberries.

While Chen Wen cooked, Hua Yun began processing more of the bear meat.

She sliced the meat into strips for smoking.

Arranging the meat strips on the smoking rack, she lit a fire underneath.

Soon, smoke and heat began to spread, and the bear meat began to smoke.

This time Hua Yun kept the fire relatively small, planning to leave this batch of bear meat in the smokehouse overnight.

The rest of the meat was temporarily stored in the shelter, awaiting further smoking and roasting.

With the grizzly bear’s death, Chen Wen and Hua Yun felt a significant relief.

They dared to store meat in the shelter now.

...

As Chen Wen and Hua Yun busied themselves.

At the site of the grizzly bear’s death.

A shadowy figure was gnawing at the grizzly bear’s innards.

As it ate, it remained vigilant of its surroundings.

In nature, animals have their own rules.

Before the grizzly bear’s death, any animal entering this river valley had to crouch low.

But on the night of the grizzly bear’s death, many carnivores stealthily approached.

Their intention was clear, to take over this fertile territory.

Like the shadow.

It was here to eat the meat and take over the territory.

From the depths of the forest.

An American black bear of considerable size slowly made its way over.

It was lured in by the smell of blood.

The American black bear bared its teeth, as happy as a two-hundred-pound child.

But upon reaching the innards, it found its dinner already occupied by another creature.

This creature was unfamiliar to the American black bear, but judging by its appearance, it probably wasn’t very formidable.

It let out a low growl, driving away the shadow.

The shadow hesitated but didn’t attack.

Instead, it dragged a half-eaten intestine and fled quickly.

Though displeased, the black bear found plenty of leftovers.

It immediately began feasting.

Soon after, a second American black bear arrived.

It also joined in the feast!
