Elián;

Darkness hums around me, and instantly I know where I am. It’s that dream again. Why do I keep having the same dream? And I can’t wake up even though I know I’m dreaming.

I stand still in the now familiar darkness, but I feel something has changed. There’s something... different.

I look down at my hands, and there it is. That orb... it looks a bit bigger now. The blue flames in it burn brighter, and for some reason it’s... heavier.

Much, much heavier. Why has it become so heavy??

I try to lift it the way I always do, but the moment I try, the weight yanks my arms downward. I groan, forcing my body upright as I try to hold it up.

It’s so heavy it feels like it would rip my arms off if I don’t let it go. If I do... it might break.

I can’t let go. I don’t want to. It’s so pretty, and it feels so important to me. Why is it suddenly so heavy?? It hurts... it hurts to hold up.

I’m going to drop it...

I don’t want to do that. Dropping it feels like death...like failure... like something terrible.

My knees tremble, and my breath starts shaking.

”Help,” I scream into the dark, not knowing exactly who I’m screaming out to, but knowing I need help. I can do this alone.

Sweat drips down my forehead. The orbs pull my arms down an inch, then another.

”Please...someone...help me!!” I scream, but still I get no answer.

Tears of fear start escaping my eyes as the orb starts slipping from my grasp.

”Koda!!!” I scream on instinct, and just as I’m certain that the orb will fall from my hands, a hand appears beneath mine.

Warm... gentle... and strong.

I turn around in relief, expecting to see Koda, but my heart skips a beat when I see Zephan standing beside me.

He doesn’t say anything. He just puts his hands under mine, lifting the orb with a firm, gentle grip.

The weight reduces immediately.

Relief explodes into my chest so hard I almost cry. I thought I was going to lose the orb.

”Zephan...” I call, and he gives me a small nod as he looks down at the pretty blue orb in our arms. As if helping me look after it is the most natural thing in the world.

I look down at the orb, and although the weight of it has reduced. It is still heavy. Still too much.

My arms tremble as I ballet to keep holding on.

”It’s still... too heavy...” I croak, and Zephan shifts, tightening his hold under my hands, but even he struggles.

Just when I’m about to start panicking again, another hand slides under ours.

Protective. Stubborn and gentle in a different way.

I look to my side, and to my shock, it’s Zethar who’s standing on my other side. His touch brings instant balance, like the missing third support of a collapsing bridge.

His smile is soft. Quiet. Reassuring.

And suddenly... the orb feels light.

Almost weightless.

I stare at it, stunned. The blue flames inside calm, glow an even and peaceful blue, like it’s finally satisfied.

”I... I didn’t break it,” I whisper, and Zephan smiles at me while Zethar nods.

The dream dissolves into swirling blue light, and suddenly, I gasp awake.

*****

The moment my eyes open, I don’t recognise the ceiling above me. It’s decorated with coiling gold serpents and shimmering sapphires.

The air smells like herbs, incense, and something faintly sweet...

Everything hurts.

My body feels drained, like I ran a cross-country marathon barefoot.

A cool cloth brushes my forehead, and I freeze.

I stare down at whoever just wiped my head, and I come face to face with a woman stirring beside me.

She has white hair that is mixed underneath with back... she has this easy... Serpent-like grace in her posture. Straight-backed, silent, elegant.

Her eyes are sharp and focused, golden ones as she holds the cloth in her hand with steady, practised motions.

Her left arm is covered in beautiful iridescent black and blue scales, and she shares a striking resemblance to Zephan and Zethar.

As she wipes my arms with the cloth, I hear a faint hiss and look down at where the sound came from.

However, once I do, what I see makes every muscle in my body stiffen...

It’s a snake! A soft, glowing blue snake lying across my chest.

It’s coiled peacefully, breathing gently against my ribs. Like, I’m the most comfortable bed to ever exist.

My eyes shoot wide open.

”What...what is...why is...there’s...a snake...o...on me...” I breathe as quietly as I can as my panic starts compounding.

The woman beside me quickly places a hand on my shoulder and speaks before my panic can explode.

”Do not move.” She says with a voice calm and smoother like cool stone.

”The serpent is Lúmira,” she adds, and I blink at her.

”She brings peace. She eases pain and quiets the mind. I placed her on you so your body could recover faster.” She explains, and I blink in silence.

I look back at the snake, and it lifts its head and flicks its tongue at me once, almost as if greeting me, before settling again.

The snake doesn’t look dangerous...

Actually... she looks serene. Like a small river in serpent form.

My heartbeat slows when I sense no aggression, and I let out a breath.

”A... peace snake?” I whisper, and the woman corrects.

”A healer serpent. Native to Nagari alone.” She says, and I pause.

Nagari.

The word hits me like cold water.

I struggle to sit up a bit, but pain shoots through my head.

The woman presses a cool hand gently to my shoulder.

”Do not strain yourself.” She warns, and I swallow.

”Where... am I?” I question just to be sure, and she folds the cloth. She dips it into a bowl, squeezes it, then brushes it across my cheek with surprising gentleness.

”You are in Nagari.” She replies, and her eyes soften just a little bit.

”Under our care.” She adds, and I stare at her in confusion.

”And... you are...?”

”I am Selthía. Aunt to Zephan and Zethar.” She replies, and I blink.

Aunt?

They have an aunt??

Her words are not hard to believe, though.

She has the same sharp jawline Zephan has, the same piercing eyes Zethar carries.

The same silent strength...

”Oh...” I whisper.

”You... you really look like them,” I add, and her lips twitch... almost a smile, but it disappears quickly.

”I should hope so,” she says quietly.

”They take after my late twin.”

Twin?

Before I can ask more, she smooths a hand through my hair. A gesture so gentle it surprises me.

”Rest, child,” she murmurs.

”Your body is exhausted. But you are safe here.” She adds, and I fall silent.

Her voice may seem cold, but there is warmth beneath it. A hidden softness she doesn’t try to show... but can’t entirely hide.

I open my mouth to thank her, but before I can get the words out, the door slams open.

”Elián!”

Zephan rushes into the room so fast that the serpent on my chest lifts her head in what almost looks like annoyance.

Zethar is right behind Zephan, and my brows crease. Zethar is here??? How??

Zephan drops to his knees beside the bed instantly, and I watch the woman slip silently out of the room.

”Are you okay? Light...Elián, I was so worried...” Zephan breathes as he leans closer, checking my face, my arms, everything.

”Does anything hurt? Can you breathe? Do you feel dizzy? Are you hungry...” He continues, and Zethar clears his throat.

Zephan freezes like a scolded child, and I almost smile.

”Do not overwhelm him,” Zethar says, and Zephan bows softly to me.

”Sorry.”

I can’t help it.

I chuckle...softly, weakly...but genuinely.

Zephan’s eyes brighten at the sound, and I see the ghost of a smile on Zethar’s face.

Zephan leans forward again, his voice cracking...

”I thought we lost you.” He whispers, and Zethar places a hand on his brother’s shoulder.

Lying here, with Lúmira warm on my chest, Zephan’s relief washing over me, and Zethar’s soft eyes fixed on me, I remember the dream.

Two pairs of hands.... Two brothers.

Lifting the weight I couldn’t carry alone.

I look at both of them... and suddenly the dream feels less like nonsense.

And more like a message.

I need both of them... I get that part. But what is the orb? Why do I keep seeing it?

Why is it always blue?

What does this repeated dream mean, and how will these two brothers help me hold up an orb?

I don’t understand...
