Chapter 292: v3 Chapter 53: securing the crown

The coronation did not end the struggle.

It only changed its nature.

Lorenz was King.

But not everyone accepted him as one.

The other princes still had supporters.

Some controlled provinces.

Some had military commanders loyal to them.

Others had spent years building alliances that did not disappear simply because Lorenz had taken the throne.

For those men, the coronation was not the end.

It was the beginning of the next fight.

Within weeks, the first rebellion began.

A provincial lord refused to recognize the King’s authority.

Then another followed.

A military commander withdrew his troops from the capital.

A fortified city closed its gates and declared for one of Lorenz’s brothers.

The news began arriving at the palace almost daily.

Lorenz had won the throne.

Now he had to make the kingdom obey it.

The first months were spent determining which men could still be brought back into the fold.

Not everyone who resisted was equally committed.

Some were frightened.

Some were waiting to see which way the kingdom would turn.

Others were genuinely determined to fight.

Cassian became increasingly involved in identifying the difference.

His years among the nobility proved useful.

He knew how men spoke when they were afraid.

He knew how they behaved when they believed they had already lost.

And he knew the difference between someone negotiating for survival and someone merely buying time.

Sometimes he carried messages.

Sometimes he accompanied Marcus.

Sometimes he went ahead alone, appearing as Count Carlo of Almery rather than as a representative of the King.

Not every problem required a sword.

But some did.

The first major campaign began before the year was half over.

Lorenz sent troops north.

The rebel commander refused to surrender.

The resulting battle lasted less than a day.

The rebellion did not.

It took weeks to dismantle the network supporting it.

Several estates were confiscated.

Some men were imprisoned.

Others were pardoned after swearing loyalty.

The King’s policy became clear.

Those who submitted would be given a place under the new order.

Those who continued to resist would lose everything.

It proved effective.

One rebellion ended.

Then another began.

The second was larger.

Several houses joined together, believing that Lorenz was still too newly crowned to withstand a coordinated challenge.

They were wrong.

By then, the King had consolidated enough military support to respond quickly.

The rebellion was broken.

Its leaders were brought before the Crown.

Some were executed.

Others were stripped of their titles.

A few were allowed to retain their lands after publicly swearing fealty.

Each victory made the next rebellion more difficult.

The factions were losing men.

Losing money.

Losing confidence.

And slowly, they began turning against one another.

Cassian saw it happening.

The same men who had once trusted each other now suspected betrayal.

Promises were broken.

Secret alliances collapsed.

Information reached the Crown before rebels could act.

Sometimes Cassian had found it.

Sometimes Robert had.

The intelligence network that had once helped Lorenz win the succession was now helping him keep the kingdom.

Robert had become particularly valuable.

His speed and ability to move unnoticed allowed him to carry information between the capital and the surrounding territories before it became outdated.

Alex had risen steadily within the security structure.

Gary, once the youngest of the four Arena survivors, had earned his place among the men entrusted with increasingly important duties.

And Marcus remained where he had always been.

At the King’s side.

The four men had changed.

So had their lives.

They were no longer fighting simply to survive.

They were fighting because the future of the kingdom depended upon the outcome.

And the fighting became increasingly brutal.

There were sieges.

Burned estates.

Ambushes on military roads.

Nobles executed for treason.

Villages caught between competing armies.

Men who had once attended the same royal receptions now faced one another across battlefields.

The old political divisions had become bloodlines.

Brother against brother.

Father against son.

House against house.

Lorenz understood that every victory had to be followed by consolidation.

Defeating a rebel army was not enough.

The surviving supporters had to be separated.

Their resources had to be taken.

Their alliances had to be broken.

And those who could still be useful had to be given a reason to remain loyal.

So the King offered pardons where they would work.

Titles where necessary.

Positions.

Protection.

Land.

And, when nothing else worked, punishment.

Slowly, the kingdom began to settle.

Months passed.

One rebellion ended.

Another threatened to begin.

A noble house that had once supported one of Lorenz’s brothers quietly changed sides.

A military commander surrendered his fortress.

A province that had withheld taxes began sending them again.

The King’s authority spread farther beyond the capital.

But the final resistance remained.

It took more than a year after the coronation before the last major faction was finally broken.

The final campaign was neither the largest nor the bloodiest.

It was simply the last.

Once the final stronghold surrendered, there was nowhere left for the remaining rebels to gather.

Their armies had been destroyed.

Their allies had abandoned them.

Their leaders were dead, imprisoned, or in exile.

The rebellion was over.

Not because everyone had forgiven Lorenz.

But because there was no longer anyone capable of challenging him.

The kingdom slowly returned to normal.

Trade resumed.

The roads became safer.

The soldiers who had spent months away from their homes finally returned.

The palace became quieter.

Meetings that had once been held behind locked doors were now conducted openly.

The banners of the King’s faction were no longer temporary symbols.

They were simply the banners of the kingdom.

Lorenz had become King.

And now, at last, he was secure enough to rule.

For Cassian, the end of the conflict brought an unexpected stillness.

There was no immediate campaign.

No urgent report.

No rebel army waiting beyond the next hill.

For the first time in years, he had enough quiet to think.

He had spent the last five and a half years moving from one necessity to another.

Survive.

Escape.

Become Carlo.

Serve Lorenz.

Win the succession.

Secure the kingdom.

There had always been something more urgent.

Now there was not.

And with the silence came the thought he had deliberately pushed away.

Home.

The Empire.

Ashford.

And Marian.

He still did not know what had happened to her.

He had never allowed himself to investigate properly.

He had no independent network.

Every resource available to him belonged, in one way or another, to Marcus, the Kensington family, or the Crown.

Any inquiry into the Empire could have exposed him.

And before Lorenz was secure, Cassian could not risk drawing attention to a past that was supposed to belong to another man.

Now things were different.

But that was a matter for another day.

For the moment, Cassian simply stood beneath the quiet evening sky and looked across the grounds of the royal residence.

The fighting was over.

The kingdom had survived.

And somewhere ahead of him, for the first time in years, there was finally room to think about what came next.
