Chapter 266: v3 Chapter 27: the challengers I

The two weeks passed quickly.

Too quickly, Robert thought.

When the Arena first announced that their regular matches would be suspended, he had imagined rest.

Two weeks without blood.

Two weeks without waking each morning wondering whether he would be sent into the Arena before sunset.

Two weeks without a condemned man waiting on the other side of the gates.

He had been wrong.

The first morning of the preparation period, they were taken somewhere they had rarely been allowed to enter.

A separate training hall.

The weapons were better.

The equipment was better.

Even the instructors were different.

They were not the usual men who taught them how to survive the Arena.

These men studied them.

Measured them.

Asked questions.

Watched how they moved.

Then they began tailoring the training to each fighter.

Robert’s sessions focused heavily on footwork and timing.

Alex was pushed toward endurance and defense.

Harry was drilled repeatedly against opponents who attacked in ways designed to exploit his habits.

Gary was given heavier weapons and forced to work on his ability to maintain control under pressure.

And Cassian—

Cassian was given a little of everything.

His instructor watched him for several days before changing the exercises.

Again.

And again.

They wanted to know how he reacted when forced backward.

How quickly he could change direction.

How he responded when his dominant hand was compromised.

How long he could maintain his concentration.

How he fought when exhausted.

There was no longer any general instruction.

Every exercise had a purpose.

Every opponent had been chosen for a reason.

The Arena was preparing them for one man.

One fight.

One outcome.

The food improved too.

The portions were larger.

The meat was better.

They were given more water and allowed longer periods of rest between sessions.

Medical attendants checked their injuries regularly.

If someone developed even a minor strain, training was adjusted.

The Arena wanted them healthy.

Not because it cared about their comfort.

Because healthy fighters were worth more.

Robert understood that quickly.

”This is ridiculous,” he said one afternoon as he sat eating a meal considerably better than anything they usually received.

Cassian looked at him.

”What?”

”They’re treating us like we’re valuable.”

Cassian continued eating.

”We are.”

Robert grinned.

”That’s the problem.”

He looked around the room.

”I could get used to this.”

Cassian said nothing.

He had no intention of getting used to it.

He knew better than to mistake better treatment for kindness.

They were being protected because someone had paid to see what they could do.

Nothing more.

Still, he couldn’t deny the difference.

For two weeks, none of them had been sent into the ordinary rotation.

No death matches.

No condemned men.

No sudden orders.

They trained.

They ate.

They slept.

Then trained again.

And for Cassian, that alone made the two weeks worthwhile.

By the time the challenge day arrived, he felt sharper than he had in months.

The Arena was different that morning.

The stands were fuller.

The crowd was louder.

The excitement was different from the ordinary matches.

This was not simply another afternoon of fighters being sent against one another.

Today, five Arena fighters would face five outside challengers.

The Arena had made a spectacle of it.

Five matches.

Five fighters on each side.

But this was not a best-of-five.

Every match would be fought.

Every result would count.

The final score could be five victories for the Arena fighters.

Four to one.

Three to two.

Two to three.

One to four.

Or a complete defeat.

The wagers had been arranged accordingly.

Spectators were not simply betting on who would win an individual bout.

They were betting on the final score.

How many victories would the Arena claim?

How many would the challengers take?

The larger wagers had already begun moving through the stands.

Cassian stood with Robert, Alex, Harry, and Gary in the preparation area.

An Arena official entered.

”Listen carefully.”

They turned toward him.

”Today’s matches will be conducted under challenge rules.”

He looked at each of them.

”All five bouts will be completed.”

Robert raised an eyebrow.

”Even if one side has already won three?”

”Even then.”

Robert nodded.

”Right.”

The official continued.

”Each victory will be recorded toward your side’s final score.”

Cassian understood.

The five of them were competing as a group, but each fighter would still be responsible for his own bout.

Then the official’s expression hardened.

”There is another matter.”

The room quieted.

”The Arena has placed a special condition on today’s event.”

Robert’s smile disappeared.

”Of course it has.”

”If your side performs poorly, the consequences will be severe.”

No one spoke.

”The overall result will determine the severity.”

Cassian’s eyes narrowed.

The official continued.

”A fighter who wins his bout will receive a lesser penalty than one who loses.”

Robert frowned.

”So even if we win our own matches—”

”You are still part of the team.”

Robert’s expression soured.

”That’s unfortunate.”

”But your individual victory will be taken into consideration.”

That mattered.

Cassian understood immediately.

If the Arena fighters won three matches but lost two, the consequences would be manageable.

If they won only one, those who had lost would bear the heavier punishment.

If they were completely defeated—

The official didn’t finish the sentence.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone understood.

Robert exhaled slowly.

”So we’re fighting for ourselves and for each other.”

”Exactly.”

The official stepped aside.

”The challengers have already arrived.”

Cassian’s attention sharpened.

”None of you will meet them before your bout.”

Their identities remained undisclosed.

That was deliberate.

The Arena wanted the fights to remain a spectacle.

And whoever had sent the challengers had no reason to reveal more than necessary.

”You will be introduced in order.”

The official stepped aside.

”Prepare yourselves.”

They were led toward the entrance.

The roar of the crowd grew louder with every step.

Cassian could hear the announcer’s voice carrying across the Arena.

”Ladies and gentlemen!”

The crowd erupted.

”Today, the Arena presents something different!”

A horn sounded.

”Five of our finest Arena fighters!”

Another roar.

”Against five challengers from beyond these walls!”

The crowd thundered.

Cassian stepped toward the opening.

The Arena stretched before him.

Thousands of spectators filled the stands.

Banners hung above them.

Money changed hands below.

The announcer continued.

”Five matches!”

The crowd shouted.

”Three victories claim the day!”

Another roar.

Cassian looked toward the opposite entrance.

The challengers had not yet appeared.

Robert stood beside him.

He rolled his shoulders.

”Well.”

Cassian glanced at him.

Robert smiled.

”Looks like we’ve got an audience.”
