Chapter 288: v3 Chapter 49: His first appearance I

The Valmieri residence was already alive with conversation when the Kensington carriage arrived.

Light spilled through the tall windows of the house, illuminating the entrance and the steady stream of carriages arriving throughout the evening.

Marcus stepped down first.

Cassian followed.

For a moment, they stood together at the foot of the steps.

Marcus glanced at him.

”Remember what we discussed.”

Cassian inclined his head.

”Count Carlo of Almery.”

”Exactly.”

Marcus adjusted his cuff.

”And tonight, you are not there to hide.”

A faint smile touched Cassian’s mouth.

”I gathered that.”

Marcus gave him a brief look before turning toward the entrance.

They entered together.

The reception was being held in one of the larger salons.

Music drifted from the adjoining ballroom while guests stood in small groups, speaking over wine and refreshments.

The moment Marcus entered, several people recognized him.

”Marquess of Kensington.”

”Lord Marcus.”

”Good evening.”

Marcus acknowledged the greetings as they moved farther into the room.

Cassian walked beside him.

He did not rush.

He did not hesitate.

His posture was relaxed, his shoulders naturally straight, and his steps measured without appearing deliberate.

He did not look around like a man seeing a noble residence for the first time.

He simply observed.

Quietly.

Naturally.

Marcus stopped before a group of young gentlemen.

”Lord Armand.”

The young man turned.

”Marcus.”

They exchanged greetings.

Marcus then gestured toward Cassian.

”Allow me to introduce my cousin.”

The man’s attention shifted.

”Count Carlo of Almery.”

Cassian inclined his head.

”A pleasure.”

”Count Carlo.”

Lord Armand returned the greeting.

His eyes moved briefly over Cassian.

There was a momentary flicker of curiosity.

”From Almery?”

”Yes.”

”I had not realized the Kensington family had another branch in the capital.”

”It is a distant one.”

Cassian’s tone was easy.

Lord Armand smiled.

”I hope you don’t mind my saying so, but you certainly don’t look as though you’ve spent your life in a remote county.”

Cassian’s expression remained composed.

”Perhaps Almery has been unfairly represented.”

There was a brief silence.

Then one of the other young men laughed.

Lord Armand followed.

”I suspect it has.”

Cassian allowed himself a small smile.

The answer was simple.

But the manner in which he had delivered it made an impression.

There had been no defensiveness.

No eagerness to prove himself.

He had simply turned the observation into a joke and moved on.

The gentlemen looked at him again.

The clothes were appropriate.

The posture was impeccable.

His speech was measured.

His movements carried the quiet confidence of someone who had spent his entire life among people who mattered.

Nothing about him suggested a provincial young count trying desperately to appear sophisticated.

If anything, it was the opposite.

He appeared entirely comfortable.

Marcus continued introducing him to several of the young nobles gathered nearby.

A young heir from one of the western houses.

A second son whose family held considerable influence at court.

A baron’s eldest son who had recently returned from military service.

A young lord whose father had remained publicly neutral in the succession dispute.

With every introduction, Cassian paid attention.

Not merely to the men themselves.

To their names.

Their houses.

Their positions.

And, most importantly, who stood beside whom.

Once Marcus had made the introduction, Cassian did not simply wait for conversation to come to him.

He began choosing where to go next.

A young man standing near one of the windows caught his attention.

Cassian recognized the family name from his tutor’s lessons.

House Varenne.

A powerful house.

Not openly hostile to Lawrence.

Not openly supportive either.

Useful.

Cassian excused himself from the conversation and approached.

”Lord Varenne?”

The young man turned.

”Yes?”

”Count Carlo of Almery.”

Cassian inclined his head.

”We have not been introduced.”

”No, we have not.”

”I heard you recently returned from the northern estates.”

Lord Varenne looked mildly surprised.

”You heard that?”

”Marcus mentioned it.”

Cassian smiled.

”I was curious whether the capital had been a more pleasant change than the countryside.”

The man’s expression relaxed.

”It certainly has its advantages.”

”I imagine so.”

Cassian asked about the northern estates.

The man answered.

Cassian listened.

Then asked another question.

Not because he needed the information.

Because he wanted the man to feel that he had his attention.

It worked.

Within minutes, Lord Varenne was speaking freely.

Cassian offered a compliment regarding one of the man’s horses.

Then another regarding his knowledge of the northern trade routes.

Neither was excessive.

Neither sounded calculated.

But both were deliberate.

He was making the man feel that speaking with him was worthwhile.

And Cassian knew exactly what he was doing.

He had spent his entire life on the other side of these conversations.

As the Duke of Ashford, people had always approached him first.

They praised him.

They sought his opinion.

They remembered small details about him.

They found reasons to compliment his judgment, his accomplishments, even his appearance.

They tried to make themselves memorable.

They tried to make themselves useful.

Some genuinely liked him.

Others wanted something from him.

He had watched them carefully.

He had learned how people tried to win the attention of someone more powerful than themselves.

Now, for the first time, he was deliberately doing the same.

Not groveling.

Not flattering excessively.

That would only make him look like an ambitious minor nobleman desperate for advancement.

Instead, he offered people something far more effective.

Attention.

Interest.

Respect.

A carefully chosen compliment when it was deserved.

A question that made them speak about something they enjoyed.

And, when appropriate, a little humor.

He had never had reason to practice any of it before.

People had always come to him.

Now he was the one seeking them out.

And apparently, he had been paying attention all those years.

With enough determination, he could do it rather well.

When Cassian returned to the larger gathering, he found that several of the men he had met earlier were already speaking with others.

One of them noticed him.

”Count Carlo.”

Cassian turned.

”Lord Armand.”

”I believe we met earlier.”

”We did.”

The man smiled.

”You have already met half the room.”

”Not quite half.”

Cassian glanced around.

”Perhaps a quarter.”

The man laughed.

”You’re settling in quickly.”

”I have had excellent introductions.”

His gaze shifted briefly toward Marcus.

”That is true.”

The conversation continued.

Cassian moved naturally between groups.

He did not remain beside Marcus.

He did not need to.

When he saw someone worth knowing, he approached.

When someone approached him, he welcomed the conversation.

He asked about estates, horses, travels, court appointments, and the capital.

He remembered names.

He listened.

He laughed when something amused him.

And when the opportunity presented itself, he offered a compliment—not enough to seem insincere, but enough to make the other person feel noticed.

The Kensington connection had opened the first door.

Cassian was discovering that he could open the others himself.

He did not need Marcus beside him for every introduction.

In fact, he preferred that he wasn’t.

If Marcus remained attached to him throughout the evening, people would remember only one thing.

Kensington’s cousin.

Cassian wanted them to remember something else.

Count Carlo.

A man with his own personality.

His own interests.

His own charm.

Someone they would want to see again even when Marcus was not present.

That was the beginning of influence.

Not simply being known.

Being wanted.

A gentleman who had been watching from another group leaned toward his companion.

”Who is he?”

”Count Carlo of Almery.”

”Almery?”

”A distant Kensington branch.”

The other man glanced toward Cassian again.

”He doesn’t look like a minor country count.”

”No.”

The first man smiled.

”Perhaps that’s why he’s interesting.”

Cassian did not hear the exchange.

He was already speaking with another young nobleman.

And as the conversation continued, he found himself already playing the game.

It was different from the Arena.

There, he had learned to read opponents.

Here, he was learning to read people.

The stakes were different.

The weapons were different.

But the principle was strangely familiar.

Observe.

Understand.

Adapt.

And never reveal more than necessary.

Cassian lifted his glass as the conversation shifted toward the succession.

He smiled.

”I am still learning the capital.”

The other man nodded.

”Then you have arrived at an interesting time.”

”So I have heard.”

Cassian said nothing more.

He simply listened.

And the man continued talking.

That was enough.

Across the room, Marcus watched quietly.

He had expected Cassian to manage.

He had not expected him to settle in so quickly.

The first introductions had done their work.

The Kensington name had established legitimacy.

But the rest belonged entirely to Cassian.

He was becoming known as Carlo.

Not merely as Marcus Kensington’s distant cousin.

Not merely as a minor count from Almery.

But as a young nobleman worth knowing.

And that was exactly what they needed.

Cassian looked across the room.

There were still dozens of people he had not met.

Dozens of names.

Dozens of families.

Dozens of doors that might eventually open.

He smiled faintly.

He had spent years watching people try to make themselves useful to him.

Now it was his turn to make himself useful to someone else.

And he had every intention of becoming very good at it.
