Chapter 271: v3 Chapter 32: the challengers VI

The fifth match began.

Cassian stepped onto the sand.

Across from him stood the final challenger.

The man’s face was concealed.

But Cassian barely noticed.

He was watching the man’s stance.

There was no comparison.

The first challenger had been well trained.

The second had been better.

The man standing before him was something else entirely.

His feet were positioned naturally.

His sword rested at precisely the right angle.

His shoulders were loose.

His breathing was steady.

There was nothing rigid about him.

Nothing ornamental.

Everything had purpose.

Cassian’s eyes narrowed.

This man had spent years fighting.

Not merely training.

Fighting.

The signal sounded.

They moved at the same time.

Their swords met.

The impact rang across the Arena.

The crowd reacted immediately.

A sharp roar swept through the stands.

The challenger had moved so cleanly that even from a distance, his skill was obvious.

Robert watched from the Arena fighters’ side.

His expression had changed.

He had been eager for this match.

Now he looked considerably more serious.

”That’s different,” he murmured.

Alex glanced toward him.

Robert didn’t look away.

”Much different.”

On the sand, Cassian attacked.

The challenger parried.

Cassian changed direction.

The man’s sword was already there.

Cassian stepped back.

The blade passed in front of his chest.

He countered.

The challenger turned his wrist.

Their swords locked.

Cassian pushed.

The man gave ground.

Then suddenly twisted free.

Cassian followed.

A cut.

Blocked.

A thrust.

Deflected.

Another strike.

Cassian stepped aside.

The exchange lasted only seconds.

The crowd erupted again.

They were beginning to recognize what they were watching.

The challenger wasn’t simply winning exchanges.

He was making them look effortless.

Cassian could hear the cheers growing louder whenever the man’s blade found its mark.

His own name was barely called.

That wasn’t unusual.

Cassian had never cultivated the crowd.

He didn’t perform.

He didn’t acknowledge their cheers.

He simply fought.

The challenger, however, had already captured their attention.

Cassian attacked again.

The challenger parried.

Cassian stepped in.

The man slipped around the strike and answered with a cut.

Cassian barely avoided it.

The crowd roared.

Robert watched closely.

”He’s reading him.”

Cassian’s attention remained entirely on the man before him.

The challenger advanced.

Cassian retreated.

A strike came toward his shoulder.

Cassian blocked.

The impact jolted his arm.

Another strike.

Cassian caught it.

The challenger changed his angle.

Cassian moved.

Too late.

The blade grazed his side.

The crowd reacted with a collective shout.

The challenger didn’t pursue immediately.

He waited.

Calm.

Composed.

Cassian raised his sword again.

Across the field, Robert’s eyes narrowed.

He knew what he was seeing.

This wasn’t the same kind of fighting they had faced earlier.

The challenger wasn’t simply more technically skilled.

He was controlling the pace.

Cassian was being forced to respond.

The two men circled.

The crowd began calling for the challenger.

Cassian heard his own number only occasionally.

He ignored it.

The challenger moved.

Cassian reacted.

Their swords collided.

The challenger struck again.

Cassian blocked.

Again.

Blocked.

The third strike came from a different angle.

Cassian twisted.

The blade passed inches from his neck.

Cassian countered.

The challenger parried.

Then struck him across the forearm.

Cassian’s fingers tightened around the hilt.

The pain was sharp.

He ignored it.

He attacked.

The challenger met him.

Their swords crashed together again.

For a moment, Cassian managed to push him backward.

The crowd quieted.

Then the challenger changed rhythm.

A feint.

A sudden step.

A cut toward the ribs.

Cassian barely moved in time.

The blade opened another shallow wound.

The crowd erupted.

The challenger was putting on a display now.

Not intentionally.

That was simply what his skill looked like.

Cassian retreated.

The challenger followed.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Cassian’s back began moving toward the edge of the fighting ground.

Robert’s expression tightened.

”He can’t let him keep doing that.”

Alex glanced at him.

Robert shook his head.

”He’s being pushed exactly where the man wants him.”

Cassian shifted left.

The challenger anticipated it.

Cassian changed direction.

The man adjusted again.

Cassian stopped.

For the first time, something cold settled in his chest.

He was being read.

Not completely.

But enough.

The crowd roared as the challenger pressed forward.

They had chosen their favorite.

Cassian didn’t care.

The challenger attacked.

Cassian blocked.

The force drove him backward.

Another strike.

Cassian parried.

Another.

He barely caught it.

The challenger stepped inside his guard.

Cassian twisted away.

Too slow.

The hilt of the man’s sword struck his ribs.

Cassian staggered.

The crowd erupted.

Robert swore under his breath.

”Come on, Carlo.”

The challenger advanced.

Cassian attacked desperately enough to force him back.

The man’s sword caught his.

Cassian pushed.

The challenger resisted.

Their blades locked.

They stared at each other.

Cassian saw nothing in the man’s eyes.

No arrogance.

No excitement.

Only concentration.

Then the challenger broke the bind.

His blade snapped toward Cassian’s shoulder.

Cassian ducked.

The sword passed over his head.

Cassian countered.

The challenger blocked.

Cassian attacked again.

Blocked.

Again.

Blocked.

The crowd cheered every exchange.

To them, the fight looked almost beautiful.

The challenger’s movements were precise enough to make every attack seem effortless.

Cassian’s were becoming increasingly desperate.

Robert watched without speaking.

He knew Cassian was in trouble.

The challenger was simply better.

Cassian knew it too.

He could continue fighting like this.

He could survive for a while.

Perhaps even find an opening.

But eventually, he would lose.

And losing would not change his contract.

He would still have to remain in the Arena until the three years were complete.

That had always been the plan.

Keep his head down.

Survive.

Leave.

Five months into his stay, that had been all Cassian wanted.

No attention.

No questions.

No one looking too closely at who he was or where he had come from.

He had intended to remain exactly what the Arena believed him to be.

Three hundred and nineteen.

Nothing more.

That desire had not disappeared.

If anything, he still wanted his anonymity.

But he had been here for one year and eight months now.

And he was no longer the same man who had entered these walls.

He had trained every day.

He had fought men who had tried to kill him.

He had learned from every wound, every mistake, every opponent.

He had become far more capable than he had been when he first arrived.

And yet the man standing before him was still on another level.

The challenger attacked again.

Cassian blocked.

The force nearly drove him to one knee.

He recovered.

The challenger advanced.

Cassian retreated.

Another strike.

Cassian moved.

Another.

He blocked.

The challenger was relentless.

Not reckless.

Not angry.

Simply efficient.

The crowd thundered.

Cassian’s breathing grew heavier.

His wounds burned.

His arm ached.

His vision narrowed.

Then he understood what troubled him most.

The man before him was not merely a skilled fighter.

Whoever had sent him had access to someone of an entirely different level.

A man like this did not belong to an ordinary patron.

What kind of person could command a fighter like this?

Someone with money, certainly.

Influence.

Connections.

Perhaps power far beyond the Arena.

Cassian’s eyes hardened.

That realization changed something.

Not his goal.

He still wanted to leave.

He still intended to complete his contract and disappear from this place without drawing attention to himself.

But perhaps there was another path worth considering.

If a patron powerful enough to command a man like this was searching for capable fighters, then this challenge might be more than a fight.

It might be an opportunity.

Cassian had no allies.

No resources.

No clear path back to the Empire.

His contract would eventually end, but freedom alone would not solve everything waiting beyond these walls.

For nearly two years, hiding his true ability had cost him nothing.

Now, perhaps it could cost him something.

The challenger came forward again.

Cassian blocked.

Their swords locked.

He looked into the man’s concealed face.

If he remained hidden, he would simply be another Arena fighter waiting for his contract to end.

But if he showed what he could truly do—

Perhaps the person behind this challenge would notice.

Perhaps that person would be worth knowing.

Perhaps not.

Cassian had no way of knowing.

But he knew one thing.

If this was the level of man standing between him and freedom beyond the Arena, then continuing to fight while concealing everything he knew would serve no purpose.

He had spent nearly two years surviving.

He could afford to take one calculated risk.

The challenger broke the bind.

Cassian lowered his center of gravity.

His sword shifted in his hand.

The stance he had learned in the Arena disappeared.

What replaced it was older.

Deeper.

Instinctive.

The stance he had carried long before he ever entered these walls.

The challenger stopped.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Robert saw it.

His eyes narrowed.

The challenger saw it too.

For the first time, his composure changed.

Cassian raised his sword.

He still wanted to remain unnoticed.

But he would no longer hide what he could do.

The next exchange would be different.
