After I Died, the Scumbag Went Mad

Chapter 263: Chapter 262: Who is the Leader Behind the Organization?

”Hah...” Nathan Lawson let out a laugh. ”I thought you’d want to start from your birth, but it turns out you’re more interested in how your parents and Marcus Lancaster died...”

Nathan Lawson looked at me curiously and drew closer. ”The parents you’re talking about... you mean Cecilia Caldwell’s parents?”

I frowned, not answering.

”You really see yourself as Cecilia Caldwell, don’t you?” Nathan Lawson gripped my chin, turning my head from side to side. ”I’m guessing the Organization will use every means at their disposal to prove you’re the reborn Cecilia Caldwell... because those lunatics are desperate to prove souls can be reborn.”

Nathan Lawson suddenly laughed. ”Once people have money and power, their desires just keep growing... So many wealthy people, for the sake of longevity, for eternal life, have poured in vast amounts of capital. They use the most advanced medical technology, the most expensive drugs, and the most inhumane methods to prolong their lives... all because they can afford it.”

”What a pity. The laws of nature are absolute, and Mother Nature doesn’t coddle these people...” Nathan Lawson’s voice grew low. ”When their time is up, they still die. The biggest regret for so many of the wealthy on their deathbeds is that they didn’t live to see a method for eternal life discovered.”

I frowned and remained silent.

”But your existence was a revelation for those already-crazed tycoons... Now, you’re the most valuable of all the test subjects.” Nathan Lawson smiled. ”As test subjects, you are all commodities in the hands of the Organization. The Organization puts you on display for the wealthy to admire and invest in. They inform the Organization of their interests, and the Organization then selects you... for experiments.”

For example: clones, organ transplants, umbilical cord blood... the list goes on.

”In recent years, medical development has hit a plateau. The average lifespan is restricted by factors like genetics and environment, causing this generation of tycoons to pass away around the age of ninety to one hundred. Although gene editing is one of the Organization’s signature successes, it ultimately benefits posterity... and the tycoons are far more concerned with themselves.”

Nathan Lawson led me into the villa and told me the wealthy had become reluctant to pour resources into the Organization. Because gene-editing technology was already mature, they wouldn’t invest without any new, dazzling projects to entice them.

”But Cecilia Caldwell... gave us a huge surprise.” Nathan Lawson placed Cecilia Caldwell’s file on the table. ”Cecilia Caldwell died. Our test subject, monitored at every turn by our people since birth, was killed right under our noses... Her body was even placed in a glass display case. This was a blatant provocation to the Organization from the Rebels.”

Nathan Lawson smiled and spoke again. ”Not only that, what surprised everyone even more about ’Cecilia Caldwell’ was that... she was actually ’reborn.’ Reborn into the body of Silvia Lynch.”

This topic immediately sent shockwaves through the community, getting the entire generation of tycoons behind the Organization riled up with excitement.

They were getting old, and they didn’t want to die.

They all wanted to know the secret to rebirth and eternal life.

”Ever since the First Emperor, once people have power and money, the pursuit of immortality has only grown more frantic...” Nathan Lawson leaned back on the sofa. ”Three years ago, Sebastian Lancaster joined the Organization through the Lancaster Family. He proposed a viable plan for soul rebirth and memory transfer, but at first, his plan didn’t attract much attention.”

’Nathan was telling me about how Asher joined the Organization, but he was in no hurry to tell me how Marcus Lancaster and my parents died.’

”The tycoons aren’t fools. They thought it was pure fantasy.” Nathan Lawson then pulled out several photos. The person in them was Felix Foster, in images ranging from his childhood to a picture of him in a high school uniform.

I watched Nathan Lawson warily. ’Has the Organization already targeted Felix Foster?’

”Don’t get excited. Felix Foster was Sebastian Lancaster’s pledge of allegiance to the Organization.” Nathan Lawson smiled. ”Sebastian Lancaster is too smart, smart like a paranoid madman. He poured all his intellect into it, making him seem invulnerable. But everyone has a weakness, and Cecilia Caldwell is his...”

”If Sebastian Lancaster wanted to join the Organization, he needed the tycoons’ approval and interest. He proposed the rebirth experiment using Charlie’s clone—Felix Foster,” Nathan said nonchalantly.

’He no longer cared if I learned these truths, because he had no intention of letting me leave.’

I drew in a sharp breath... ’Felix Foster is actually Charlie’s clone.’

’The so-called secret to rebirth... it must be related to cloning experiments and genetics, right?’

”Sebastian Lancaster was a gift from the Organization to the Lancaster Family. He’s the perfect offspring, created through gene-editing and optimization of Marcus Lancaster’s DNA. Sebastian Lancaster’s intelligence, physique, and even his looks have all been optimized, so he’s a once-in-a-generation genius... an artificial one.” There was a hint of disdain in Nathan Lawson’s voice.

’Clearly, he also looked down on gene-edited geniuses.’

”But Charlie was different. He’s a natural-born genius. The Organization only noticed him because of Sebastian Lancaster. One, a genius meticulously engineered by the Organization; the other, a normal person who had never undergone genetic modification. Charlie’s existence quickly captured the Organization’s attention...”

”Under the guise of a physical examination at the orphanage, the Organization took living cells from Charlie, who had just started to reveal his prodigious talent.” Back then, Charlie was only seven or eight years old.

”Charlie’s clone had always been in the Organization’s labs; it never left. It wasn’t until three years ago, when Sebastian Lancaster joined the Organization, that he claimed he could prove the existence of soul rebirth. He used the recently deceased Charlie... and the clone, Felix Foster, to conduct a soul transmigration experiment.”

”The experiment was a success, and many of the tycoons were stunned. But plenty of people were still skeptical. After all, it was an isolated case. A clone could easily feign its identity using the original’s memories, making it difficult for anyone to tell if it was real. It was like an unverifiable magic trick. No one knew if Felix Foster was truly the reborn Charlie, or just an actor who possessed Charlie’s memories...”

Nathan Lawson looked at me, his gaze deep. ”But you, Cecilia... your existence has stunned the tycoons once again. They’re offering a fortune to have you ’recovered.’ They want to publicly study and test you to prove whether you’re truly reborn or just... a case of memory compatibility.”

I smiled in understanding. ’No wonder... Killian Lancaster said I was the most valuable test subject right now.’

”As for why Marcus Lancaster died... as the leader of Meridia’s financial magnates, he dared to lead the opposition against the Organization. The Organization had to eliminate him. If he had rallied the other tycoons, the Organization would have been finished... so Marcus Lancaster had to die.”

”As for Cecilia Caldwell’s parents, they were scientists cultivated by the Organization, yet they developed an attachment to a test subject with no true blood relation to them. They even tried to protect and abscond with the subject. How could the Organization tolerate such traitors?” Nathan’s voice grew low, his gaze on me deepening. ”It would have been incredibly difficult for Cecilia’s parents to escape the Organization on their own. They had a helper—Victor Quinn... Cecilia’s parents had always wanted their ’daughter’ to live a normal life. They planned to give her a new identity to prepare for their escape from the Organization, and Victor Quinn, under the guise of conducting an experiment, was secretly helping Cecilia and her parents the entire time...”

’How ridiculous... Victor Quinn wasn’t actually trying to harm me... ’

”It’s a pity. Their fight against the Organization was like a praying mantis trying to stop a cart.” Nathan sneered, mocking Marcus Lancaster and the others for their foolishness. But beneath that sneer... I keenly sensed a distinct trace of bitterness.

’Nathan Lawson... he must have had some special feelings for someone among Marcus Lancaster, Victor Quinn, and my parents.’

’Normal people have emotions and desires; they can’t just cut off all feelings and attachments. The Cecilia clone was right: to have feelings is to have a weakness.’

”I want to know who the leader behind the Organization really is...” Looking at Nathan Lawson, I asked the question I most wanted an answer to.
