Chapter 244: Chapter 223: Xiao Mo Is a Good Person, He’s Actually Not Bad…

Xiao Mo’s expression flickered as he looked at the woman before him.

“What a fool.”

In the end, Xiao Mo just sighed, shook his head, and turned to continue on his way.

Watching Xiao Mo walk away, Wangxin clenched her small hands, quickly stepped over the fallen tree in front of her, and trotted after him.

He walked in front.

She followed behind.

The young woman’s clear eyes remained fixed on Xiao Mo’s back, as if she were afraid of losing sight of him.

For the next few days, Xiao Mo didn’t say another word to Wangxin. It was as if he had chosen to ignore her, pretending she didn’t exist.

But Wangxin didn’t mind.

For the young woman, all that mattered was that she could be by his side and that he wasn’t trying to chase her away.

Of course, ’even if he did try to chase me away, I wouldn’t leave…’

Every evening, when Xiao Mo found a cave to stay in, Wangxin would be outside gathering dry twigs and fallen leaves.

As the young woman gathered, she would glance back at the cave, afraid that Xiao Mo might slip away while she wasn’t looking.

Once she had collected enough, she would hug the dry branches and hurry back to the cave, sitting down beside Xiao Mo to carefully build a fire.

Sometimes, Xiao Mo would deliberately hunt a rabbit and, right in front of Wangxin, skin and clean it before roasting it over the fire.

Watching Xiao Mo eat the “cute little bunny,” Wangxin would always close her eyes, press her palms together, and chant Buddhist Scriptures to guide the rabbit’s soul to the afterlife.

After Xiao Mo finished eating, Wangxin would even gather the rabbit’s bones and give it a proper burial.

As the young woman buried the rabbit, she would mumble, “Little bunny, if you want revenge in your next life, come find me. Don’t go after Xiao Mo. Xiao Mo is a good person, he’s not actually bad…”

Overhearing Wangxin’s words as he passed by, Xiao Mo couldn’t help but rap her on the head.

Wangxin didn’t get angry. She just cradled her small, shaved head with both hands. Even as the pain brought a faint mist of tears to her eyes, she wasn’t angry, only looking at Xiao Mo with a wronged expression.

And when Xiao Mo was about to lie down to sleep in the cave, Wangxin would use some branches and piles of grass to make a simple bed for him.

Every morning, Wangxin would wake up earlier than Xiao Mo, afraid he might have snuck away.

Wangxin didn’t know where Xiao Mo was going; she just followed.

Wherever Xiao Mo went, she went.

But Wangxin had once heard Xiao Mo say that he was going to use the blade in his hand to teach the Western Regions a lesson about rules.

Wangxin knew that the “lesson” Xiao Mo intended to teach would mean the deaths of many, many people…

「A few more days passed.」

At dusk, Xiao Mo and Wangxin arrived before a dilapidated temple.

Wangxin tugged on Xiao Mo’s sleeve, indicating that she wanted to go inside to pay her respects.

Although Xiao Mo looked impatient, he still went in.

The temple enshrined several Buddha statues. The one in the center had a benevolent face and a gentle smile.

But the Dharma Guardian Vajras on either side were ferocious and menacing, giving off a frightening aura.

The statues hadn’t been cleaned in a long time and were covered in dust and cobwebs.

“Xiao Mo, can I wipe down these statues? It’ll be quick…” Wangxin pleaded.

“Fine. You stay and wipe them down. I’m leaving.” With that, Xiao Mo turned as if to walk out of the temple.

Wangxin was startled and quickly followed behind Xiao Mo.

“Weren’t you going to wipe down the statues?” Xiao Mo asked.

Wangxin clutched Xiao Mo’s sleeve tightly and shook her head. “Xiao Mo… I… I won’t wipe them… Let’s keep going…”

Seeing her pitiful expression, Xiao Mo rapped her on the head again and sat back down beneath a statue. “We’re not leaving today. We’ll spend the night here.”

Hearing Xiao Mo say they would spend the night, Wangxin was overjoyed. She drew a bucket of water from the well in front of the temple and began to diligently wipe down the Buddha statue.

But not long after, a flash of lightning illuminated the dilapidated temple.

“BOOM!”

A clap of thunder echoed through the mountains, seemingly shaking the very ground.

Immediately after, a torrential downpour began.

Fortunately, although the temple was old, its roof was intact, so not much rain seeped in.

“Master, Madam, Young Miss, the rain is too heavy. Let’s go inside to take shelter…”

“Yes, let’s hurry inside. Our clothes are soaked.”

Just as Xiao Mo was resting with his eyes closed, the voices of several people sounded from outside.

A pot-bellied, middle-aged man walked in with his family, escorted by several guards.

Judging by the silk clothes they wore, they were a wealthy family.

The group was stunned for a moment when they saw the man sitting under the statue and the Monk wiping it down.

And on closer inspection, the Monk was actually a woman?

’There are female Monks in this world?’

“You two, we are from Jianzhi County. We were on a mountain outing today but didn’t expect such heavy rain. I was wondering if we could take shelter here?”

The middle-aged man spoke politely. He seemed to understand the etiquette of the road, knowing that even in an old, ownerless temple, there was a first-come, first-served principle.

“Do as you please,” Xiao Mo said indifferently.

“Thank you.”

The middle-aged man bowed and led his family to the other side of the temple.

There was a good amount of dry firewood in the temple, left behind by previous travelers who hadn’t used it all during their stay.

They started a bonfire and began drying their clothes.

By this time, Wangxin had finished wiping the temple’s statues and sat down beside Xiao Mo.

The middle-aged man’s group glanced over at Xiao Mo and Wangxin from time to time.

The pairing of a “bladesman and a Monk” was simply too strange.

Especially since the Monk was a woman.

And a remarkably beautiful female Monk at that.

Although she didn’t have a single strand of black hair, her flawless features and sacred aura made her seem like a fairy descended to the Mortal World.

The middle-aged man tried to strike up a conversation with Xiao Mo, saying his name was Han Zi, a Presented Scholar from Qiuyue Country, on his way to take up a post in Liangsha County.

But Xiao Mo didn’t even acknowledge him, so the middle-aged man named Han Zi fell silent.

However, Han Zi’s daughter, Han Dongling, was blinking as she stared at Xiao Mo.

The young woman’s eyes shimmered; she had never seen such a handsome man before.

Unconsciously, the sky grew dark, and the rain outside still hadn’t stopped.

Han Zi knew it was unlikely they would be able to leave tonight.

“Boss, the rain’s too heavy! Let’s get inside, quick!”

“Son of a bitch, we finally pulled off a big score.”

“Forget it, forget it. We’ll head back to the stronghold first thing tomorrow morning.”

Just as everyone was warming themselves by the fire, waiting for the sun to rise the next day, another clamor arose from outside.

A moment later, several burly men kicked the temple doors open.

These burly men were all carrying blades, had vicious expressions, and were clutching several boxes.

Han Zi’s family jumped in fright.

Han Dongling quickly hid behind her father, and the few guards also felt a tremor of fear, watching the burly men warily.

The scar-faced man in the lead swept his gaze over the people in the temple and grinned. “Heavy rain. We’re just borrowing a place for the night. Don’t mind us, eh?”

Without waiting for anyone’s agreement, the blade-wielding men found a spot to sit down, their eyes fixed intently on Xiao Mo and the others.
